DENTON Plays #
LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
Gerard Hudspeth Mayor of Denton
Hello Friends and Neighbors,
As we transition into the cooler seasons, I am given the opportunity to reflect on the transformation our city experienced during the 31 days of Denton Halloween. All month long, our vibrancy and creativity were on full display for our residents and the tens of thousands of visitors. It is my hope that the excitement October brought across Denton will continue through the holidays and into the new year. It’s what makes this city north of ordinary!
I am excited to introduce this year’s Winter/Spring Play Guide. Our parks and recreation team has worked hard to offer a diverse range of activities, programs, and events that will keep our community active, engaged, and connected throughout the colder months and into the fresh, blooming days of spring. Whether you’re looking to embrace the crisp winter air on our scenic trails, participate in an exciting fitness class, or engage your children in our enriching youth programs, there’s truly something for everyone.
As Denton continues to grow, we remain dedicated to providing recreational opportunities that reflect the diversity and vitality of our city. We invite you to stay engaged with our community activities because your participation is what makes Denton truly special. For the latest updates and information on upcoming events, please visit the City of Denton website, Denton Parks & Recreation Facebook page or www.dentonparks.com. Subscribe to our newsletter, https://bit.ly/PARDNewsletter, to stay informed about all the exciting opportunities our city has to offer.
This guide showcases a variety of activities, from youth sports leagues and adult fitness classes to community events that bring friends and neighbors together. Our recreation centers, parks, and facilities provide the perfect spaces for residents to gather, play, and celebrate. Whether you’re discovering a hobby, exploring one of our parks, or joining a league or program, we are here to ensure you have a positive and memorable experience. Parks and green spaces are the heart of our city, offering not only places for exercise and play but also a sense of community. As mayor, I take great pride in the way our offerings contribute to the overall quality of life in Denton.
I encourage everyone to take advantage of the many opportunities listed in this guide and explore all that Denton has to offer. Whether you’re starting the year with new fitness goals, spending quality time with family, or simply looking to enjoy our natural spaces, I hope you’ll find something here that excites and inspires you.
Here’s to a fun and active season ahead!
WE’RE ON A MISSION TO.... UNITE GROW PLAY!

Building Community Through Inclusivity The Importance of Adapted Programming
At Denton Parks and Recreation, we strive to ensure that every individual, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to unite, grow and play. Inclusive and adaptive programming is crucial in the endeavor; it provides vital opportunities for individuals with diverse needs to participate fully in recreational activities, which helps to foster a sense of belonging and community.
In 2023, Denton Parks and Recreation proudly introduces a sensory egg hunt as a part of the Easter Eggstravaganza event. This addition was designed specifically for children of any age to engage in egg hunting with smaller crowds, quieter environments, and specially selected eggs that cater to different sensory needs. The event also initiated a sensory hour with quieter music, dimmed indoor lighting and smaller crowd sizes as well as a sensory room for any attendees needing to take a break and enjoy calmer activities. By creating these thoughtful opportunities, we are ensuring all children and families can share in the joy of the event.
Our commitment to inclusive programming extends beyond singular annual events; it encompasses a vast array of offerings designed to engage individuals with varying abilities. We have established programs such as the Special Olympics, adapted sports and art classes, along with nature walks and social dances all tailored to create a welcoming space where everyone can participate at their own comfort level. These programs not only enhance physical skills and promote active living but also build social connections, community engagement and friendships that are invaluable to individual well-being.
Inclusive and adapted programming and events are essential not only for the recreational value but also for the profound impact on community cohesion and understanding. When we prioritize the needs of all individuals, we cultivate empathy, and respect, break down social barriers, and build a community where everyone can belong. Together, we continue to pave the way for a more inclusive future, where recreation becomes a shared experience that unites us all.

The adoption of the Parks, Recreation, and Trails System Master Plan in March 2022 marked a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing our park system. To implement the identified initiatives in crucial areas such as land acquisition, park planning, and construction, our organization has mobilized extensive efforts.
The Park Planning & Maintenance Team plays an indispensable role, ensuring the seamless functioning and continuous improvement of our parks. Through meticulous strategic planning, streamlined operations management, and a steadfast focus on community, this team seeks to create public spaces for both present and future residents to enjoy.

Funding for our projects is received from various revenue sources provided by local, state, and federal levels of government. Here’s a little bit of information regarding each funding source.
Tax Revenues & Capital Funding
Parks and Recreation receives a specific amount of budget each fiscal year from General Fund allocations which mostly come from sales and property tax sources. Most of this funding mechanism is used for the operations which include maintenance of our parks system. In addition, every fiscal year a certain amount of capital funding is provided to various departments for infrastructure/asset improvements. This source helps fund existing maintenance/improvement projects within our parks system.
Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT Funds)
This source is made up by Denton visitors, hotel rentals, or short-term rental in the city. State law requires that HOT funds be used to support and enhance local tourism. The Parks and Recreation Department uses HOT funds to support public art, a usage that is clearly supported by HOT fund guidelines developed by the Texas State Comptroller.
Development Fees
These fees are charged to developers to account for the additional parks amenities that residents in new neighborhoods will need. The Parkland Dedication Ordinance supports the opportunity for land dedication and supports charging developers a fee to offset the cost of transforming new or existing parkland to support additional users. Often, this funding source is referred to as 915/916 due to the respective accounts where the money is deposited.
Bond Initiatives
The City uses bond funds - essentially loans taken out against the value of the City’s continued ability to receive tax revenue and voted on by Denton residents to fund capital improvements that will have a long lifespan. In the Parks Department, bond funding often support land purchases, the construction of new recreation centers, and similar vertical construction programs. Sometimes, bond projects have a public art component attached to each specific construction project to enhance the aesthetic design associated with that project.
Grants
Staff is constantly assessing opportunities for various forms of funding to maximize resources and limit the burden of our city’s tax dollars by applying for various grant programs that are offered from local, state, and national organizations such as: Texas Parks and Wildlife, National Park Service, Texas Department of Transportation, North Central Texas Council of Governments, Texas Commission on the Arts, and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Denton Parks Foundation
This organization occasionally receives private donations from individuals and foundations that can be identified for specific park projects. Past projects include the North Lakes dog park, Eureka 2 playground, and the Denia softball complex.
Other Funding Sources
The department receives funding from two separate trust funds. McKenna Trust Fund & the Parks Gas Well fund. The McKenna Trust Fund was established by George McKenna, and upon his death this bequest provided for the continued maintenance and improvements at McKenna Park. The Parks Gas Well fund includes revenues accruing to the City for natural resource extraction from park properties. It is important to note that this does not mean that there are active gas wells on Parks properties, but instead that the Parks and Recreation department is receiving royalties for resources that lie beneath park lands.
Sometimes the Parks and Recreation department receives funding from the federal government for specific purposes. This was the case when Parks received funding through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), to encourage economic recovery after COVID-19.
CURRENT & UPCOMING PROJECTS
For detailed information about our park projects, visit www.discussdenton.com.
Greening Street Medians
This is a long-term project to beautify medians throughout the City of Denton, especially along state highways. These projects are made possible by funding from the Texas Department of Transportation’s Green Ribbon Program, which funds landscaping improvement along state highways in order to provide beautification, traffic calming, and to improve air quality by reducing the spread of traffic-related soot and fine particles. Planting trees in highway medians also helps increase the City’s overall tree canopy coverage, helping to reduce the urban heat island effect. The latest Green Ribbon project will place trees, landscaping, and irrigation on medians along Fort Worth Drive / US-377 between Roselawn Drive and Country Club Road.
Traffic Box Wraps
Four additional traffic boxes in Downtown will be wrapped in the next couple of months. Art submissions have been requested. There are currently 17 other boxes in the Downtown area that feature art by Denton high school students, UNT and TWU student, Denton seniors, and local artist Jude Landry. The traffic box wrap program will soon expand outside of Downtown.
Librada “Lily” Cantú Inclusive Playground
This project commenced in the Summer of 2023, with Mesa Design hired as the design consultant in April of 2023. The goal of the project is to create a sensory-rich play space where children of all ages and abilities, including those with physical, mental, vision, and hearing disabilities, can play together. Parks and Recreation staff have received public input to shape the project through a public survey that launched in March 2024, and in a virtual public meeting was held on March 28, 2024. Parks Planning staff anticipate a Summer 2025 start date for construction, barring any unforeseen delays.
Hickory Creek Trail Master Plan
Parks and Recreation Planning staff continue to work on the alignment study of the Hickory Creek Trail Master Plan. This plan was authorized to begin by the City Council on March 1, 2022, and the total trail length is anticipated to be approximately 12 to 16 miles. Upon completion, the trail will run from US 380 to Guyer High School. Staff are currently working with the design consultants to clarify alignments for the trail and will be conducting public meetings by end of year.
Villages of Carmel Park Construction
The City of Denton originally acquired this 6.5-acre property in far southeast Denton in 2016. In 2022, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) approved a Denton Parks and Recreation grant in the total amount requested of $621,563. Parks Planning staff anticipate starting construction by February 2025.
Briercliff Park Master Plan Project
Bowling Green Park
In 2023, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department approved a grant of just under $600,000 to support improvements at Bowling Green Park. Plans for park improvements include additional trails and connectivity along Windsor Dr, the addition of a parking lot, habitat restoration, and an ADA accessible garden space. Parks and Recreation planning staff are currently finalizing construction documents and hope to start construction by March 2025.
In May of 2022, Denton Parks and Recreation hired a design consultant to help develop the Briercliff Master Plan. A series of public engagement opportunities followed that determined the scope of the project would include a skate spot, picnic tables, shade, seating, new playground, and new splashpad. In February 2024, Parks and Recreation staff received news that the Briercliff redesign received $750,000 in grant funding support from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Final design plans are expected to be completed by October 2024 and construction beginning by summer 2025.
Kayak Launch Ramp Installations
In 2022 Parks and Recreation applied for a grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Boating Access Grant Program. The grant program offers a generous 75 percent match of municipal funds for projects that renovate existing boat ramps or construct new ones that provide access to public waters for recreational boating. In March 2023, staff was notified that they were approved for the grant. The grant is separated into two stages, Planning & Construction. Staff is currently working on contracting with a design agency to initiate phase 1.
Audra Oaks Park
The City of Denton acquired the 5.19-acre Audra Oakes property in 2021 through a local partnership. In May of 2024, Parks and Recreation staff secured a design firm’s services to design a park space that will ultimately include items such as a loop trail, playground, pavilion, and other park amenities.
Eagle Creek Trail
As part of a developer agreement, the City of Denton received parkland near Denia Park. The developer will construct a trail connecting Parvin Rd. to Roselawn Dr., which is currently under construction and anticipated to be finished by the end of the year. Final plans for the trail were developed in October 2023 and work on the project continues. Staff anticipate the project to be completed by October 2024.
Development Services Building Mural
In Late September a mural-sized adaptation of the art Jude Landry designed for the Design Downtown Denton initiative was installed at the Development Services Building. Landry’s design was previously adapted to a traffic box wrap outside Old City Hall (at the Elm/McKinney street intersection). This new mural is visible through a large window over the Development Services Building foyer that is illuminated at night.
COMPLETED PROJECTS
For detailed information about our park projects, visit www.discussdenton.com.
Deer Moon Sculpture & March of the Monarchs Mural
The steel and aluminum sculpture Deer Moon, by Robert Barnum, was installed off S. Bonnie Brae Street in southwest Denton just north of Vintage Boulevard. The work features an aluminum buck, hawk and moon against a background of weathered steel depicting a tree. In Southeast Denton, Kirk Seese recently completed his March of the Monarchs mural covering three sides of the Sycamore Street Bridge near S. Crawford Street. Seese’s mural features vibrant Monarch butterflies against an airy verdant and lilac background.
Joe Skiles Park Improvement Project
The Southridge Community celebrated the Grand Reopening of Joe Skiles Park on June 1, 2024. The newly refreshed park space now features a regraded lawn, perimeter loop trail, irrigation improvements, a new play structure for 2-5-year-olds, newly planted trees and turf, and a replacement of the existing play court fencing. Plans for the revised park space emerged in 2023 and were greatly aided by the availability of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. These funds were provided to municipalities to encourage rebuilding and economic growth after pandemic closures. The package of amenities added to Joe Skiles were determined by Parks and Recreation staff in close consultation with Southridge Neighborhood stakeholders.
Play
with Parks and Recreation
Youth Volleyball
The Denton Parks and Recreation Youth Volleyball Program has seen incredible growth in recent years, becoming a central hub for young athletes ages 6 to 17 in Denton County. In 2021 our league had 45 teams, we now host nearly 100 teams each spring and fall season. This league brought together over 2,000 athletes from the county to compete every year, fostering a sense of community and teamwork.
Our program’s success would not be possible without valuable partnerships, particularly with the University of North Texas (UNT) and Denton ISD. Their gym spaces allow us to host games and practices, with our championship weekends featuring matches across seven gyms simultaneously. The dedication of our local schools and partners truly keeps our league thriving.
However, with such rapid growth, we’ve encountered challenges in meeting the demand for space. To maintain the quality of our program, we may need to limit the number of teams in future seasons due to these space constraints. We are actively working on potential solutions and hope to expand our facilities in the coming years, ensuring that even more young athletes can join our thriving league.
Our Youth Volleyball Program is committed to providing opportunities for young players to develop their skills, build friendships, and compete in a supportive environment. Thank you to our community and partners for making this league possible!

Gold Medal Awards
National Recreation and Park Association Gold Medal
Winning the gold medal is the ultimate award for a parks and recreation department. Denton has been awarded the gold medal three times; 1985, 1989, and 2003. The department was a finalist in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002. Today, an organization must wait three years before reapplying for the gold medal. Only a handful of departments have won the award more than three times since its inception.
Texas Recreation and Parks Society Gold Medal
Winning the TRAPS Texas Gold Medal is the ultimate award in the State of Texas for a parks and recreation department. Denton has been awarded the gold medal two times; 1989 and 1994.
