STRENGTHENING COLORADO’S CIVIC DNA 2017 ANNUAL REPORT
ENGAGING LEADERS TO STRENGTHEN OUR COMMUNITY Leadership is an activity, not a title or position. In the community, you see it in action when people are engaged for the common good. This year, the Leadership Foundation stepped up its efforts to engage others and invest in opportunities that will strengthen our community. › Challenging our participants to grow their impact. This year members of our Impact Denver, Leadership Denver and Leadership Exchange programs took on 29 community projects — the most in our history — channeling their passion into specific needs brought to us by the community. You’ll read more about some of those projects in the pages that follow. › Engaging our alumni. Alumni from the past 40-plus years helped us launch The Network powered by Southwest, an online community where they can build connections, share ideas and increase their civic impact. Our Leading Colorado luncheon rallied the largest audience ever to support the Emerging Leaders Scholarship Fund. And, we owe special thanks to the members of our Alumni Advisory Council, who are bringing their best insights, ideas and enthusiasm to this important work. › Advancing Colorado’s Civic DNA.™ We have made significant progress on a new leadership skills program based on the values of Colorado’s Civic DNA – inclusivity, collaboration, shared vision, responsibility and leadership. We continue to explore the gaps in those values, and how we can close them while passing on Colorado’s Civic DNA to the next generation of leaders.
› Going intercontinental. This past year, we explored the innovative work of one of the nation’s most vibrant communities: Salt Lake City. In 2017, we made our first intercontinental leap in the 27 years of Leadership Exchanges — to Munich — where we continued to challenge ourselves while building a shared vision for our future. › Refreshing our look. You also may have noticed that we’ve updated our own logo and look because we want to reflect the energy and passion of our entire leadership community. As you look back on the year with us, we hope you’ll see we’re making great strides to give leaders the tools they need to get engaged – and lead – for the common good.
Best regards, DAN LEWIS, Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation Executive Director

LEADERSHIP DENVER:
TAKING THE MAYOR’S CHALLENGE Leadership Denver (LD), our longest running program, was tasked by Mayor Michael B. Hancock with the challenge to tackle five of Denver’s most critical issues: affordable housing, homelessness, mobility, race relations and behavioral health. As an alum of the 1993 LD class, Mayor Hancock knows the type of change that can come from the collaboration of 64 community leaders. The class broke into eight teams, with three coalescing around housing. “Affordable housing, at its core, is about providing equal opportunity for our citizens,” said Adeeb Khan, director of corporate social responsibility at TIAA and member of an LD class project focused on funding for affordable housing through impact investment. “This experience really helped me understand how economics can sometimes destroy opportunity when left unchecked.” As the LD class worked on our community’s toughest challenges, they experienced challenges of their own.
“The biggest initial challenge we faced was in narrowing a huge topic – race relations – down to a concrete and manageable concept for a project,” said LD 2017 participant Antwan Jefferson, a clinical assistant professor of human development and family relations, and an urban community teacher of education at the University of Colorado Denver School of Education and Human Development. His group is developing community tours in Park Hill, Barnum, Montbello, Sunnyside and Auraria neighborhoods to generate awareness of the challenges different racial groups have faced and the contributions they have made to create the neighborhood’s civic DNA. The LD class will continue to work together on their projects and will present their final outcomes to the mayor in June 2018.

“Our community must address the housing shortage as a top priority, and it’s an interesting challenge to address both affordable housing and gentrification, simultaneously,” said Maria Sepulveda, vice president of community development of Wells Fargo Bank and member of an LD 2017 project focused on accessory dwelling units as an affordable housing option.

natural disaster in the state’s history. Today as chief legal and people officer of Galvanize, she is empowering women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) industries through Galvanize Gives, an initiative dedicated to providing opportunities in the tech world and increasing access to education. She’s also a board member of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, where she is encouraging young girls to pursue careers in STEM. Her persistence led Leadership Foundation alumni to vote her the 2017 9NEWS Leader of the Year. Her walk-up song when the honor was announced live was The Eurythmics’ “Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves.” “This award is for all the young girls and women who are willing to give back and aiming to make a difference in their communities and the lives of others,” Donner said after accepting the award at the Leading Colorado luncheon in March. A true “STEMinist,” Donner is connecting communities, bringing together diverse individuals and making our community stronger for the future.

IMPACT DENVER:
BUILDING COMMUNITY Impact Denver participants go out into the community and partner with organizations around the Denver metro area to accelerate their work. This year Impact Denver celebrated 10 years of putting up-and-coming professionals on a leadership fast track – and helping them dive into a community issue with a small team. By offering the program twice per year, its participants doubled their impact: 20 community organizations were served. “[Smaller nonprofits] are doing really important work with very little in the way of resources … They have to be very efficient,” said Megan Doering, a senior associate of TIAA and an Impact Denver spring 2017 participant. For one Impact Denver team, the challenge was tackling a project with a national discussion in the background. Their partnership with the ECDC African Community Center to improve staff satisfaction, wellbeing and retention occurred during a political debate about refugees. “[We] experienced and witnessed the impact a ban on refugees would not only have on this organization, but in the community as well,” said Daniel Martinez, associate executive director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and an Impact Denver spring 2017 participant. “We felt fortunate to contribute in some sort of capacity.”

STUDENT LEADER OF THE YEAR NADEEN IBRAHIM:
“YOU CAN LEAD FROM WHERE YOU STAND” From immigrating to the U.S. and growing up in small-town Wiggins, Colorado, to finding her voice on the University of Colorado Denver campus, Nadeen Ibrahim has used her difference as an opportunity to start conversations. It’s kept her busy. Ibrahim is the youngest member to be appointed to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment State Board of Health by Gov. John Hickenlooper, in addition to being involved in the Denver Immigrant and Refugee Commission and a recent graduate of the University of Colorado Denver. She added the honor of Student Leader of the Year, awarded by the Leadership Foundation and the Boettcher Foundation, in January 2017 at the Colorado Leadership Alliance (CLA) Summit. “Being a millennial and a young individual, people take a look at some of the leadership skills or abilities that I have and it surprises them. It’s a matter of breaking down barriers and the idea that leaders can be anybody. You lead from where you stand,” Ibrahim said. Ibrahim will take her passion and invigorating leadership to Oxford in the fall of 2018. She joined the Leadership Exchange: Munich delegation to stay connected to Colorado leaders.

LEADERSHIP EXCHANGE:
THE POWER OF COMMUNITY Students of The Other Side Academy (TOSA) in Salt Lake City know what brought them there – drug addiction, crime and eventually jail or prison. Instead of lamenting on those challenges, they spoke to 2016 Leadership Exchange delegates of the gratitude for and support they felt from the academy, a free, two-year residential vocational school that serves as an alternative to incarceration. It was an experience that inspired delegates – and led dozens to stand and raise their hand when Mayor Michael B. Hancock called for civic leaders to bring The Other Side Academy to Denver (tosadenver.com). One delegate was Andrew Schmidt. “[TOSA participants’] connection to one another is what really stood out. You could feel the power of the community they were participating in and the hope they carried for one another. It was contagious,” said Schmidt, a partner of Core Contractors, Roofing Systems, and chair of TOSA: Denver Advisory Council.
27 years of LEX trips
The mayor called for private-sector partnerships to make TOSA a reality. “With Denver growing, the amount of government resources aren’t necessarily growing with it. That’s where we need the partnerships with the private and public sectors – we need the private sector to step up to this challenge,” said Denver Councilman Christopher Herndon, a LEX 2016 delegate and a TOSA: Denver Advisory Council member. In August, the City and County of Denver committed $250,000 to bringing TOSA to Denver and asked community leaders to do the same. The private sector is stepping up to the challenge – working diligently to find a home for TOSA in Denver and launch this self-sustaining social enterprise model.

“Fifteen years ago, I was the one that needed someone to stand up for me. Then to see an opportunity to support a self-sufficient nonprofit that’s rescuing people and restoring them to their family and communities through social enterprise, it felt like this was something I could champion, Schmidt said.
