Strengthening Colorado,
ONE LEADER AT A TIME
OUR CULTURE OF LEADERSHIP IN COLORADO—our approach to innovation,
problem solving and planning—doesn’t happen by accident. It’s been built over generations of successes, failures and lessons learned. And we continue to build on it today. Our job at the Denver Metro Chamber Leadership Foundation is to pass along critical lessons learned in our past, share with future leaders the qualities and values that set us apart from the rest of the nation and build capacity for new leadership as we face new challenges. In Colorado, we have our own brand of leader: bold, open, informed, innovative, original, balanced and adventurous. Our leaders bring many of these talents to the table from the start, while other skills are developed over time. But with those qualities come the openness to diverse perspectives; willingness to cross an aisle and collaborate; a spirit of innovation; and thoughtful decision making that has led to our region’s greatest successes.
From strides in education to regional transportation solutions to neighborhood revitalization, our alumni are shaping this region for the better. You see our impact from corner to corner of Colorado: In the college students we supported through $126,000 in scholarships last year; in the 3,700 alumni who are tackling tough issues; in the 80 firstgeneration college students better prepared for their first days of school because of the 2015 Leadership Denver class; and in our current program participants who commit serious time to learning about issues from every angle. Simply put, we infuse today’s and tomorrow’s leaders with the values that have led to our success. And we plan to continue to guide leaders for a long time to come. As you’ll see, there’s no set path, but we’re always working to put the energy and skills of the business community to work for the future of our state.

TAKE THE INITIATIVE
Access Denver, Colorado Leadership Alliance and Impact Denver
YOU MAY CALL IT AMBITION, DRIVE OR GOOD OLD-FASHIONED MOXIE, but what connects all leaders is a spark—a desire to do more, to serve others and to make a community stronger. And it can start with just one small step. The Leadership Foundation helps these budding—or as we call them, emerging—leaders by giving them the tools and creating the connections they’ll need along the way. Through the Leadership Foundation’s Colorado Leadership Alliance, Impact Denver and Access Denver, we help leaders take that first step.
“
Impact Denver created the base for us to be successful from here on out. They’re helping us go to the next level.” Art of War Project Founder Curt Bean, whose organization was served by Impact Denver participants.

COLORADO LEADERSHIP ALLIANCE Student “Certain tasks lend themselves to certain people
Leader of the Year Lucas Suazo doesn’t take anything for granted—especially his health.
A diagnosis of Crohn’s Disease could have sidelined the college sophomore, but instead it changed his leadership and career trajectory at Colorado State University. He was already growing his leadership skills as a President’s Leadership Program Scholar at one of the 13 colleges and universities that comprise the Colorado Leadership Alliance—the Leadership Foundation’s league of collegiate university leadership programs. Through his leadership program and the compassionate care he received from his doctor, Lucas learned two important things: leaders who make a difference can come in all forms, and he was meant to serve others as a doctor, not a researcher. “Anyone can be a leader, and we can all lead in our own way,” said Lucas, who was named the CLA Student Leader of the Year in January.
with certain characteristics, but as long as we find our own niche, we can lead by example in any position at any organization and bring about the change we hope to see in the world.”
From founding CSU’s Chronic Health Mentoring Program, which helps students with chronic health conditions transition to college, to creating a science day for Larimer County families through La Familia, Lucas has focused his energy on serving others and passing on what he’s learned about himself and his health. “Anyone could have gotten that diagnosis and only focused on themselves and their health,” said Katie Kramer, the vice president and assistant executive director of the Boettcher Foundation, which presents the Student Leader of the Year Award with the Leadership Foundation. “But Lucas instead looked at how he could use the challenges he’s faced to help others. It’s changed how he’ll work to serve others for the rest of his life.”

BRING THE BEST IDEAS HOME
Celebrating Civic Leadership Luncheon, Colorado Experience and Leadership Exchange
LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT LISTENING AND LEARNING. And this last year, we did just that. For decades, we’ve been taking some of our region’s most notable leaders around North America to learn what other cities are doing well. And we bring those great ideas home. Last year, 153 Leadership Exchange participants flew to Nashville to learn about a focused approach to economic development, partnerships in education and branding a city. Colorado Experience participants loaded on a bus and headed up I-70 to see firsthand transportation innovation, water challenges and how our unique tourism industry grapples with workforce development and housing. And we brought in Roy Spence to inspire alumni to find the purpose in their work and honored 9NEWS Leader of the Year Marco Campos at our Celebrating Civic Leadership Luncheon.

Leadership Exchange is truly a jumping off point for where Denver can look to steal, enhance and also take stock of where we are excelling.” Justin Cooper, vice president of GE Johnson Construction Company

Step 4
STAY CONNECTED
WHAT MAKES A GREAT CITY? There’s no one formula for success. But in Denver, we believe that great cities are made by great leaders.
For 25 years, Denver business and civic leaders have traveled to great cities throughout North America—from Seattle and Miami to Mexico City and Toronto—to learn how other cities thrive as part of the Leadership Foundation’s Leadership Exchange. What started out as a handful of eager travelers has grown to more than 150 participants who spend three days touring the best of these cities. “We all get focused in our own world, so it’s good to get out and see things from a different perspective—see how we can maintain what makes Denver great, while bringing new ideas and thinking to our city,” said Rob Cohen, chairman and CEO of IMA Financial Group and a 20-time delegate.
According to Rob, the real benefit of these trips is the time community leaders spend together, getting to know each other outside of work, which allows for new, unexpected ideas to percolate— from shaping how the region approaches doing business to some of its biggest projects. “It takes dynamic, courageous leadership and the will of the people to make great things happen,” he said, “and that’s what emerges from these trips when we return to Denver and figure out how to make something work here.” It’s also a reminder that we’re on the right track. “We have been at the forefront, and now cities come to us to learn from what we are doing,” said 12-time delegate Maria Garcia Berry, CEO of CRL Associates. “There are things that we still need to do better, but our strength of working as a region is really important. We walk away not always trying be someone else; we get a better understanding of who we are and what our value is.”

KEY MILESTONES: 1990 | Seattle: Setting the stage for regionalism in the Denver metro area, this trip focused on metropolitan cooperation. 1993 | Baltimore: Seeing its aquarium inspired the development of an aquarium in Denver. Delegates also explored the impact of a downtown baseball stadium. 1996 | Boston: A number of metro area mayors attended this trip, laying the foundation to create the nationally renowned Metro Mayors Caucus in 2002. 1998 | Toronto: Focusing on transit and development around it, the success of Toronto creating communities around transit stations was the precursor for transit-oriented developments around projects like T-REX and FasTracks. 1999 | Austin: Spurred the development of industry clusters in Colorado.
2000 | San Diego: Visiting a high-tech school there resulted in the founding of Denver School of Science and Technology. 2002 | Atlanta: Studying its light rail impacted the development and plans of regional commuter projects. 2007 | Phoenix: Experiencing the Decision Theater, Metropolitan State University of Denver adapted the concept and created its Center for Advanced Visualization and Experiential Analysis. 2013 | Pittsburgh: Learning about workforce development, alumni have focused on fostering connections across sectors to create more of these opportunities.

Step 5
DISCOVER YOUR PASSION Leadership Denver
PERSPECTIVE IS GAINED WHEN LEADERS SURROUND THEMSELVES WITH DIVERSE THINKING. With people from across industries and sectors,
Leadership Denver participants take in a lot of information over 11 months and they share thoughts and opinions—opening each other’s eyes to different ways of thinking when it comes to shaping a community. Armed with knowledge, a network and confidence in how they lead, they’re ready to take action.
“
Leadership Denver was more than a leadership development program; it was truly the point in which I pivoted from living in Denver to truly being a citizen of Denver, Colorado.” Nancy Walters, Community Enrichment Manager for DaVita HealthCare Partners, Inc.

to be the first in his family to attend college. He had plenty of support from his family and his professors, and he knew it was that support that led to his success.
With that foundation, they were able to decide where they could make an impact in the community together, and Ready, Set, COllege was born. Leadership Denver’s aim is to empower leaders, and they use these tools to empower others.
So when his Leadership Denver class decided to plan a day for 80 first-generation high school students heading to college and give them the lowdown on things like managing their finances and stress—and send them away with $500 worth of goodies and a refurbished laptop—he was proud to pay it forward.
“It’s letting (these students) know they are supported,” said LD classmate and Girls Inc. President and CEO Sonya Ulibarri. “For this group of students, knowing there are people in the community who are cheering for them and want them to succeed, they will always remember that.”
DAVE ESPINOSA KNOWS WHAT IT’S LIKE
“It was through the help of many people that I’m able to be where I’m at today,” said Espinosa, a project manager for PCL Construction. Leadership Denver participants immersed themselves in the issues and challenges facing the region—hearing from all sides and sharing their perspectives with each other.
“

Step 7
BUILD ON WHAT AND WHO YOU KNOW Leadership Alumni Network and Civic Health Network
CURIOSITY IS A TRAIT LEADERS NEVER LOSE. They’re hungry for more
knowledge, because that’s the foundation for their work in the community. Through the Leadership Foundation’s Leadership Alumni Network programs like Civic Refresh and Fall Forum, we help leaders re-immerse themselves in the issues the region faces, reconnect people and provide opportunities for leaders to take action. We also create new opportunities to dig deeper into issues and make an impact. The Leadership Foundation, in partnership with the National Conference on Citizenship released the Colorado Civic Health Index and Latino Civic Health Index, giving us insight into how people engage in the community in our state. The Civic Health Network is our grassroots effort to create conversations and action around If you are that information.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, KATIE KRAMER Katie Kramer helmed the Leadership Foundation as its interim executive director over the past year. She guided the Leadership Foundation forward with her extensive knowledge as an alumna and board member. The arrangement was made possible through a generous partnership with the Boettcher Foundation, which agreed to an executive loan of Kramer to the Leadership Foundation. And, Katie continues to offer her time to the Leadership Foundation, serving as chair of its board of directors for 2015-16.
