From the Editorial Team It’s been a year now since I took on the role in editing Awbridge News and it’s been a rollercoaster ride, mostly due to events out of my control. I have thoroughly enjoyed my year in the role and am hoping to continue onwards following the forthcoming AGM. It does leave open the possibility for others to join in the team though. We are currently lacking people who will pen original pieces for the newsletter, as well as act as a roving reporter at events such as the Fete. There’s no need for a long term commitment, as you could just report on the one activity as you wish. However it would be nice to have input from new faces with new ideas, not least as I am not the best at reporting on events and we’re in danger of missing out if I keep doing it! Also, as Isaac gets older, the time I can put into collating the various bits and pieces going into each edition of Awbridge News gets less and less. If anyone is interested in either aiding Sally and me in our roles, or even taking a lead role in the editing of the newsletter please contact me on the details within the cover of the newsletter. I trust that the weather will have changed for the better and that we will soon see summer sunshine, and will then be able to enjoy a real English summer for a change. Awbridge Family Fun Day – 7th July 2013 Starting at 12 noon at the Village Hall, in much the same style as last year’s Jubilee picnic, the Awbridge Family Fun Day is yet another opportunity to get together as a village to celebrate both the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation and the Royal birth (if the dates line up!). Activities to be confirmed nearer the time, but bring your own picnic, rugs, chairs, family members and enjoy each other’s company on what we hope will be an equally sun-baked day as 12 months ago!

Village Hall Management Committee The committee has become aware of a number of enquiries regarding the management of the Village Hall. A band of volunteers come together each month to review operational problems affecting the hall, everything from bookings to heating, from fields and grounds to finances. Several members are also trustees to “The Awbridge War Memorial Trust” (charity no 278457). This is an entirely separate entity from ADVA and the Parish Council, being the official body overseeing the management of the hall and grounds for the benefit of the village. However we work closely with both ADVA and the Parish Council for our mutual benefit. The Village Hall AGM is due to be held in September and anyone is able to attend; similarly if anyone is keen to get involved they just need to make themselves known to me. I can confirm the hall is well used and is on a firm financial footing. That said, John Thompson (booking manager) will always try to fit people in with either a one off celebration or a regular class. Space has become available for a regular booking on Monday afternoons. Ian Keith

Travellers, Thefts And The Like I’ve had emails within the inbox recently from the local police on a common theme, namely travellers moving into the area and an increase of thefts (either successful or foiled attempts) thereafter. I must stress that there is no evidence other than speculation linking these two events, however it is worth noting that extra vigilance is required. All Saints Awbridge - July 2013 We had a lovely celebration in May to dedicate our 14 newly made kneelers, in church, to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Thank you again for providing the church with a lasting memory of the celebrations. Those of you who are craft minded might be interested in the suggestion of running a craft session in the village (see below). On a sunny Sunday in June we enjoyed a scrumptious afternoon tea at the home of Sarah and Ian Keith and donations of over £200 were made for the tree nursery project in our link diocese of S Rwenzori in Uganda. Thank you for all the support for this valuable project aiding agricultural and forestry projects in their local communities. Wildlife Walk and Picnic on Friday 5 July: For those of you interested in local wildlife and conservation do come to our walk and picnic , 6.30 pm start at the village hall, for a walk round the Awbridge Wildlife Sanctuary with Bryan Raines. Followed by a picnic supper at the village hall. Free Event - BYO picnic and drinks, water bottles for collecting for Turn on the Tap available. BBQ with First Responders on Friday 19 July, 6.30 pm at the village hall (see separate advert). Please come and enjoy the BBQ, bring your own drinks, & 2 litre plastic bottles for water rockets. My Knights In Shining Armour

Getting the message out

I would like to express my gratitude on the pages of the Awbridge News to two local people who came to the aid of Willow Bank House Bed and Breakfast when I really needed it.

Parish Councillors Pam Harvey and Peter Milani, together with Parish Clerk Ian Milsom, were on hand at the Village Fete in May to talk to parishioners and visitors about the work of the Parish Council (PC); and to generally promote the Village.

A couple of Fridays ago Willow Bank House found itself with a house full of guests and no central heating or hot water. The weather at the time was inclement and if the situation had not been remedied I would have had to find alternative accommodation for all my residents. This would not only have caused me financial embarrassment but it would have been a logistical nightmare for all concerned. I phoned my usual list of people to no avail. Then I grabbed my copy of the Awbridge News and spoke to Dave Wheeler who put me on to Steve Russell. Steve was working somewhere else at the time so was unable to come himself but contacted another electrician who made the situation manageable. Steve then came a week later to replace the offending part that had triggered the initial problem . My second knight in shining armour was Dave Wheeler - the builder I had contacted initially. I have been nominated as a finalist in the New Business of the Year category in the Test Valley Business Awards. Being under the spotlight for assessment for this award I was very conscious of keeping everything shipshape. The last thing I wanted was a Willow Bank House Sign resting in the hedge at the entrance of the lane. Although he was very busy Dave very kindly got the timber and the next thing I knew I had a new sign standing at the end of the drive. As well as acknowledging the good deeds of two local people, this story emphasises the importance of the local community. When I really needed help my usual list of experts let me down. It was people from Awbridge who came to the rescue.

The PC display was an all-council effort, with Cllrs Caplen and Legon helping with the production of the display material and Cllr Allen supplying and erecting the gazebo which, as it turned out, provided much needed shelter from some fairly hefty showers. Included in the display was information about the Hampshire Broadband Campaign and the message promoted by the PC was that the campaign does make a difference. Further information about the Broadband Campaign can be found at http://www3.hants.gov.uk/broadband.htm Healthy outdoor activities were a central theme of the PC display, with free maps and information being made available about the many attractive footpath walks in and around the Village. Also on display were images of the type of outdoor fitness equipment which the PC is seeking to have installed at the recreation ground. This project will be financed by Section 106 (Development) funding and July has been provisionally earmarked for installation of the equipment.

Shakespeare I think it must be obvious to anyone that knows me, that I love my caravan. I travel the open spaces and fresh air but I have to accept there are times when the caravan has to be left behind for many various reasons. When my wife Margaret and I decided to have a short holiday in Venice recently we discovered that motor vehicles are banned in the city centre, so towing a caravan was not a good idea. Also the fact remains that all the roads seemed to be flooded and used by fancy boats. To be truthful I had been to Venice before, many years ago, and at that time I could not afford to travel on a Gondola. I do remember watching and thinking how romantic it would be if I could return sometime in the future with, perhaps a wife, if I was lucky enough to be married. At that time the Gondoliers, the young men who controlled the boat by standing and using a long single oar to push and manoeuvre the craft, wore black trousers, striped tops and straw boaters on their heads. They were cheery people who laughed and joked with each other as they passed with their passengers. Sometimes you would pass or watch a boat where a musician would be playing an accordion to entertain the passengers and at times you might even hear a good voice singing an Italian aria. The boats are still there, I had my wife and I could afford to take a trip on a Gondola. There are more boats than I remembered and the Gondoliers are older, gone are the straw boaters and you can tell it is no longer romantic fun. Looking at the faces of the Gondoliers you can see it’s now just a job. Each trip last about twenty minutes and if you want a Gondola for just two people it will cost about 80 euros. A Gondola, on average, seats about five people so if you don’t mind sharing with Japanese, French, German etc. then the five can share the cost. Music, of course now cost extra. You cannot get very far in twenty minutes because the narrow canals often resemble the M25 during the rush hour. There appears to be no rules about being in charge of a Gondola and smoking or being on a mobile phone, which our Gondolier managed to do while propelling the boat! Interesting but it was not as romantic as in my dreams.

One of our excursions, not on a Gondola, took us to Verona where the official guide took a party of us to see the home where Juliet (of Romeo and Juliet fame) once lived. I am happy to pass on his interesting story. I should add that any historians or enthusiastic followers of Shakespeare may not have heard this version although the record books come close in some areas! It would seem that the romantic Italian writers of the long past, before mobile phones, all wrote versions of love stories that could have, in part, resembled Romeo and Juliet. In about 1562 a guy called Arthur Brooke (which I agree does not sound Italian) wrote, in verse, about a young couple in love. This was seen and read by, I suppose, an early Sun journalist called William Shakespeare who thought he could turn it into a good story. First he needed to base the story in a nice Italian city, so he chose Verona, which, said the guide, Shakespeare never visited!. To get the public interested he started his play with a street brawl and eventually went on to describe where Juliet lived and the balcony where the famous scene is played out. Later as tourist all round the world began searching Verona for Juliet’s home, the local authorities decided that one of the buildings in an attractive square seemed to fit the description of the poor girl’s home and tragic ending, as written by Shakespeare, even though he had never been there, The tourist became even more demanding and wanted to see the balcony. The authorities realising there was more money to be made, put a balcony on the home, about eighty years ago.

falconers for hunting pigeon, grouse and even bringing down birds as large as geese, whereas those who hunted with a hobby, did so purely for the fun and pleasure as a “hobbyist”, from which the modern use of the word hobby derives! Hobby are migratory and winter in southern Africa, however they move north in spring, following on the tail of swallows and house martin, flying over 2500 miles to arrive in Europe. Southern England is the most northerly of the hobby’s range, with no more than a few pairs breeding in Hampshire each year, occasionally nesting in this part of the Test Valley. In flight the hobby has long sickle shaped wings and resembles a giant swift, sometimes to be seen hunting at sunset around the eves of houses, to ambush bats emerging from their roosts in lofts. As a child mad on birds, I always dreamed of having my own hobby, not caged but one which would be free to fly south with the swallows in the autumn and return to me the following spring. My dream hobby also included having my own barn owl and kestrel to share my companionship. Amazingly the dream has been fulfilled, for the kestrel and barn owl that now reside in the wildlife sanctuary have grown used to my presence, knowing I pose no threat. As far as the hobby is concerned, he is a wanderer and will never be mine, although he will always be my hobby. Awbridge Hill Cuckoo Unusually, the Awbridge Hill cuckoo arrived around the last day of May singing in the trees next to the village hall. This cuckoo is very territorial and distinctive, always using the same trees to sing from and often pursues me around the nature sanctuary annoyed by the fact that I can perfectly mimic its call and can entice female cuckoo to within yards of me, if I hid under a tree. Cuckoo had fallen silent in the area of the village hall since before 1997

Awbridge Hill Wildlife Sanctuary - July Hobby fly past at village fete. For those who attended the village fete this May, the main attraction was a fly over by the air ambulance helicopter. However few villagers noticed later in the afternoon, the breath taking spectacle of a hobby soaring and swooping high above the sports ground and wildlife sanctuary in pursuit of swallow and house martin. Last year’s fete had a fly past by the army air corps which was followed up by a scraggy looking red kite, whereas the year before a peregrine falcon made a brief appearance. In 2010, the nightingale sang for the then mayor of Romsey, John Ray, after he officially opened the fete. The hobby, one of our rarest birds, is perhaps the most agile and graceful of falcons as well as a superb hunter of the skies, capable of plucking swift, swallow, skylark and dragonfly from the air. In medieval times the hobby was prized as the bird of choice by falconers. To have a hobby in the words original sense, was to be wealthy enough to purchase and cater for the needs of a rare migratory falcon for the joy and art of falconry. Historically it was the peregrine falcon that was used by

however with the creation of the wildlife sanctuary, the Awbridge Hill Cuckoo arrived to sing in 2005. In 2008 I was contacted by a family in the east end of London requesting help in fulfilling the last wish of an elderly partially deaf grandmother who wanted to hear the cuckoo before she died. Within an hour of her arrival the family had seen a cuckoo and heard another at Michelmersh, however grandma’s sight and hearing had meant that she thought she could hear the cuckoo but wasn’t quite sure? On returning to the wildlife sanctuary, amazingly the Awbridge Hill cuckoo saved the day! In response to my mimic, this bird broke cover and perched on a power cable alongside where the family were picnicking, bursting into full song for grandma to both see and hear! The cuckoo flew a full circle and then spent the rest of the afternoon calling from the top of a nearby ash tree. The Awbridge Cuckoo arrives annually like clockwork on about the 16th April, however this year it was extremely late. Radio tracking of cuckoo indicates that due to the cold spring, some birds having arrived in Britain, wisely flew back south to France for warmer weather. Other cuckoo have been singing in the vicinity of Awbridge Hill, but these appear to be from neighbouring territories. Cuckoo are in serious decline nationally, however at Awbridge this bird has yet to fall silent. Bryan Raines

Rhubarb and orange cake with flaked almond topping Ingredients 400g English rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 2cm pieces 200g golden caster sugar 150g butter, softened 2 medium eggs, lightly beaten 75g self-raising flour ½ tsp baking powder 100g ground almonds Grated zest of 1 small orange, plus 2 tbsp juice 25g flaked almonds Method Preheat the oven to 190°C, gas mark 5. Grease a round 23cm springform cake tin and line its base with baking parchment. Place the rhubarb in a bowl and cover with 50g of the sugar. Leave for 30 minutes while you prepare the rest of the cake. With an electric whisk, beat together the remaining sugar and the butter, then whisk in the eggs. Using a metal spoon, gently fold in the flour, baking powder and ground almonds, then stir in the orange zest and juice. Stir the rhubarb and its sugary juices into the cake mixture and spoon into the prepared tin. Place on a baking tray, sprinkle over the flaked almonds and bake for 25 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 180°C, gas mark 4 and cook for a further 20-25 minutes, or until firm. Allow to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Serve warm or cold, with softly whipped cream or custard.

Awbridge Evening Wi At our AGM in May a new committee was voted in and Pauline Harris was asked to continue as President for another year. Phoebe Merrick was the speaker at our June meeting and she gave a very interesting presentation about the Romsey Remount Depot. We learned that the Depot was situated between Pauncefoot Hill and Ridge Page 10 | Jul 2013

Lane on land rented from a local tenant farmer. Ten squadrons were drafted in to ensure a supply of horses for use during the first world war. Horses arrived at the railway station and were taken up through the town to the Depot where they were classified and trained and then transferred, via Swaythling, to Southampton docks to be shipped out to where they were needed. The standard of care for the horses was very high and, during an inspection, the Depot was commended as a ‘show piece’. Phoebe told us that there are plans to erect a monument to the Remount Depot in Romsey Memorial Park. During the summer we have several outings planned. These include a trip to Oxford to look around the city and a tour around Legal London.

Summer Pea and Watercress Soup

Delicious and refreshing soup ideal for a sunny day This recipe serves 6 -8 persons Shopping List: 1 onion 2 sticks of celery Olive oil 1 medium potato 2 litres of chicken or vegetable stock 500g of fresh peas, podded 200g of watercress, washed and shaken dry 142ml of soured cream How to make it: Firstly peel and finely chop the onion, then wash and trim the celery before slicing it thinly. In a large saucepan heat a splash of olive oil and add the chopped onion and celery and cook until the onion is softened but not browned. Peel and chop the potato and add the potato and the stock, then bring to the boil. Simmer for 10 minutes; once the potato is cooked add the peas and the watercress to the pan and simmer for a further 5 minutes. Once the peas are cooked, remove the pan from the heat.

Using a stick blender or a liquidizer blend the soup until smooth. Once smooth, return the soup to a clean pan and gently warm through. Taste the soup and add some salt and pepper if needed. Stir in ¾ of the soured cream once completely warm. Serve the soup with a spoonful of soured cream swirled on the top and a wedge of crusty bread.

Committee Profile. Sally McLellan We have lived in Awbridge for over 25 years now. For most of that time I had a very busy working life, splitting my time between working in Southampton, London and home. Any free time was keeping up with family and friends. Gradually we came to know our immediate neighbours, with occasional meetings at Christmas or celebrations but it wasn’t until my husband started to work less and volunteered for committee work, that we started to become more familiar with others in the village. When I retired last July I made a commitment to become more involved in village activities and also joined the committee. I was very impressed by the commitment and hard work by everyone on the committee, to make the village a more cohesive and enjoyable place to be. There is a real sense of community and inclusion and although I am still away quite a lot, so cannot make all the committee meetings, I still feel welcomed and that whatever time I can give is valued. I would encourage anyone who has a bit of time to give, to join us and become part of a very friendly, progressive and active team. Page 11 | Jul 2013
