Missing Cat
Due to work commitments I was unfortunately unable to attend the service at the war memorial on 4/8 to remember those who gave their lives during World War One. It was good to hear that so many from the village were able to attend. For this month’s editor piece I thought it would be interesting to give a timeline of what happened during September 1914, for the 2014 September edition of the newsletter…

A very moving time... A very moving time was held at Awbridge on August 4th, at the war memorial, as we remembered those who gave their lives for us in the Great War. Over a hundred attended and returned home with a candle to light at 10pm and put out at 11pm. Thank you to all who supported us. Special thanks go to; Marion Maxey who played the hymms, Dr Ian Keith with his bag pipes. The names of seven Awbridge men who fell in battle, plus another seven from local villages were read out by; Dr Simon Hughes, Sarah Keith, Jean Colman, John Harris, Mary Savage and Fred Tucker. Bryan Raines brought along ‘ Arthur‘ the goat as a reminder that goats were many of the regiments mascots. Brian also released a pigeon over the memorial (the closest we could get to a dove of peace) Peter Allen

All Saints Awbridge - September ‘14 Thank you to all those who came to our WW1 commemoration ceremony on 4 August around the village war memorial, it was a memorable event and complemented the Lights Out Vigil around the country that evening. As we move into September we begin to enjoy the harvest of fruits, farming and horticulture all around us, and are thankful for all the produce, gifts, resources, skills and talents we are given. Some of your home-grown produce may even be award winning at ADVA’s produce show but even this produce is still part of God’s generous gifts to us, even if you have to put in the actual spade work! Our Harvest Festival flowers in church will be themed on WW1 and vintage items to do come along and see. On Sunday 28 September we have our Harvest Festival Family service at 9 30 am followed by harvest lunch in the village hall, do come and join us from 12 30 pm. We are once again supporting the Basics Bank run by Southampton City Mission, and the need is growing with more people needing food and clothing than previously. The food & clothing is only given to those with referral vouchers from authorised agencies and is given out by volunteers through church communities in Southampton: www.southamptoncitymission.co.uk/donations. See list below for items requested, please bring what you can offer, to our harvest service and/or lunch. Messy Church: we had a lovely summer afternoon picnic themed Messy Church at Farley Chamberlayne in July with local ponies and tractors to add interest for the youngsters. We enjoyed learning more about Feeding the 5000+ and seeing how something as small as a packed lunch for one could be turned into a feast for 5000 when handed over to Jesus, a theme which continues now with Harvest celebrations coming up. Our next |Messy Church is on Sunday 7 September in our village hall from 2 30 pm on the theme of Love your World which will involve activities in the conservation area and crafts related to that and a ploughmans tea to enjoy afterwards. We had a great BBQ jointly with Awbridge First Responders, in July with 60+ people enjoying scrummy burgers, homemade ice cream and the joys of firing water rockets, and on a sunny warm evening, thank you all for coming! Thank you to all of you who collected a bottle for coins in aid of Turn on the Tap. Please continue collecting if you still have a water bottle & bring it to our Harvest Celebrations (28 Sept) or give to Mary Savage, Pepe Alexander or Fred Tucker, don’t forget to complete the gift-aid label on the side of the bottle. Thank you. World War One Poem
My tears are my fears for you my child for the world is forgetting again.
Why are you crying mummy? Is Daddy coming home? You said the war was over. are we still alone?
..............
These questions ask by many is put at every war but still we go on fighting but pray there will be no more. Many went to battle during World War One, and now we commemorate the year the war began. Hundreds died in battle. The injuries were severe, back home the wives and children could only wait and shed a tear. All our concerns are genuine, no one wants a war, but when it comes to power the losers are the poor. Perhaps I have missed something. Most of the world seems to be holding many official events from as far away as Australia and New Zealand commemorating the centenary of the First World War which began in 1914. The war finished in 1918, several years before I and I suspect anyone reading this magazine, was born. There have been many battles recorded in the history books but I don’t believe we hold events to commemorate the start of every disaster we call war. I was a child during World War Two and I remember, vividly, going to the air raid shelter in our garden in North Kent every night before the air raids began and the Germans started dropping their bombs. I do not remember ever being taken to a church service when I was a child but I do have very strong memories of my mother leaning over me and praying that God would protect us, which he obviously did. My father was employed at the Woolwich Arsenal and during the air raids he was an Air Raid Warden , just one of the male civilians who walked the streets and checked on families hiding in the air raid shelters and making sure they were all ok. I seriously hope, when the time comes, that we are not expected to commemorate the start of that war. As a child I remember the noise, and the fear of my mother and grown up sister and the sounds of exploding bombs.... I also remember the sound of the “Doodlebugs” a flying bomb that had a very distinctive drone until the engine stopped. The short winged bomb did not glide far when the motor stopped. We held our breath and prayed until we heard the explosion about thirty or sixty seconds later when we knew we were safe but feared for our friends and neighbours who may have been the latest victims. I like the following poem, “ The Inquisitive Mind of a Child” by an unknown author Why are they selling poppies Mummy? Selling poppies in town today. The poppies child, are flowers of love, for the men who marched away. But why have they chosen a poppy Mummy? Why not a beautiful Rose?
Watch almost any news bulletin on television and most nights it shows innocent children being carried away from a foreign fighting area, crying and in pain. Children who were unlucky enough to be born in the wrong place at the wrong time. Commemorating the start of any war, in my opinion, is wrong. I would much rather celebrate world peace. I suspect that we will always be on the verge of war and if that is so we will eventually be on a losing side. I just hope I would have left this planet many years earlier. I have found on my travels that most humans, whatever their colour or religious belief are virtually the same. We all want what is best for us and our families. We would like our children to be educated and healthy with good medical care available. We would all prefer to get on with our neighbours even if we have different religious beliefs, and we all want to enjoy good healthy food and not be hungry...... is that so wrong? I believe a world with love and peace could and will bring all the requirements but we need time. Some world leaders tend to feel that time is not available to them or their plans for the future.

Because my child, men fought and died in the fields where the poppies grow. But why are the poppies so red, Mummy? Why are the poppies so red? Red is the colour of blood my child. The blood that our soldiers shed. The heart of the poppy is black ,mummy. Why does it have to be black? Black, my child is the symbol of grief, for the men who never came back. But why, mummy are you crying so? Your tears are giving you pain.

Awbridge Hill Wildlife Sanctuary September 2014 - Elephants in Awbridge The discovery of a 250,000 year old yew spear found at Clacton in Essex, is the world’s oldest known wooden artefact and gives us a clue as to what the climate of southern Britain was like quarter of a million years ago. With species of trees such as yew, the climate would have been similar to that which we enjoy today If it was possible to travel back in time to the area of Awbridge 150,000 years ago, the first difference you would notice would be the much warmer savannah climate accommodating tropical plants and species of animal such as spotted hyena, elephant, hippo, macaque monkey and lion, which would lead you to believe that you were in Africa. Yew trees would have been displaced northwards towards the arctic and to higher altitudes, where a cooler climate would have allowed them to cling on to survival. Since that warm period, a succession of four ice ages have displaced these animals and plants south, transforming the landscape to that of arctic tundra inhabited by woolly rhino, cave bears and woolly mammoth, themselves displaced southwards by global cooling. Yew trees would have perished in the sub zero temperatures of the arctic, however in the south of their range and at low altitudes, these trees would have thrived as temperatures cooled. With the end of the last ice age ten thousand years ago as Britain was separated by rising sea levels from mainland Europe, the Awbridge countryside would have enjoyed the mild climate we have today and consisted of dense woodland of birch, ash, hazel, holly, yew and oak. Animals included the auroch, the wild ancestor of modern day cattle, as well as brown bear, wolves, elk, lynx, wolverine, wild boar and beaver.
Currently the climate is going through a phase of global warming directly attributed to the activities of man, with many countries experiencing droughts and wildfires. Whilst previous hot and cold periods have occurred over thousands of years, the current rate of change appears to be much more rapid. Whilst in Awbridge all seems well, last winters torrential rain and flooding was in part a consequence of hot tropical air originating from Indonesia. Tracking north east across the Pacific Ocean, over the United States and converging with cold arctic air over the Northern Atlantic, that weather pattern soaked southern Britain but left much of Central America and California in drought. As a direct consequence the Panama Canal is currently at risk of running dry and may have to close to shipping. Until a few years ago much of Indonesia was covered by tropical rain forest which acted to regulate the temperature, however the wide scale felling of trees has transformed the climate to that of hot and dry savannah. A tree locks up carbon from the atmosphere as timber and transpires many gallons of water into the atmosphere during the course of a day. A rain forest is a catalyst for the cooling effect of a daily tropical downpour and its timber, a sink for millions of tons of pollutant carbon particles. When trees are felled, temperatures increase resulting in less regular rainfall but more extreme tropical storms. As far as the future is concerned, the current rate of climate change in Britain appears to be accelerating, with vine yards now being established in Scotland and olive groves planted in Kent as well as almonds, peaches and melons being commercially grown in other parts of England. In this way trees tell us a lot, for at this rate in a hundred years time we might be harvesting coconuts and other tropical fruits. You might think me “bananas” however this summer, someone in the West Country has for the first time, managed to grow bananas outdoors to produce fruit. Page 10 | Sep 2014
What is for sure is that we are unlikely to see a return of hippo, elephant, rhino and lion to our countryside, however palm trees are already to be seen growing in some gardens? Bryan Raines
