From the Editor

Awbridge Primary School

Hopefully the adverts that have been appearing in Awbridge News of late for a replacement Editor will have started to be noticed, as I know from the many articles I get monthly that there are budding editors out there! Whatever your experience of such things it does not matter, as I had never done anything like it when I took over the job. Whether you fancy just manning the email account and leaving the creative writing to others, or dealing with both aspects, we are interested in hearing from you. I’ll be more than happy to show you what we pull together each month before Deon weaves his magic in case you are unsure if it’s for you!

School Dates in march:

The roads around Romsey are starting to become passable again, and the effects of the recent flooding is there for all to see if you drive down Greatbridge Road to or from town. While for Awbridge to flood there are bigger problems elsewhere, the past few weeks have been an adventure of the wrong sort for most of us. It goes without saying, please don’t suffer in silence if you have problems caused by the weather, as we are very much in it together. It is coming to that time of year when the fete and other events approach, and each year we need volunteers to help both in the run up to and on the day of the events to make them work. If you are able to offer any time at all towards the running of these events, it will be a great help and give comfort to the ADVA committee that the plans can be realized. Early signs are that the fete is continuing to grow in popularity and size, so many hands will be needed to make light work! James Child - Co-Editor Awbridge News

From the Chairman’s Pen Well the weather has not really improved since I wrote last month’s pen notes. Many of us have lost trees and parts of sheds and buildings, but must be thankful for living in a village on a hill. When you see the devastation along the coast and in various parts of the country we can only imagine the worry and trauma that some people are going through. We can do our bit for the village by helping to clear litter from the ditches and hedgerows on 27th March. I look forward to seeing you there. The time this year seems to be flying by and the fete will be here before we can look round. Have you booked your stall, or offered to help on the day? We would love to hear from you to ensure that we have another successful day. Leaflets for the car show are still available if you know somebody with an old vehicle. We are still looking for an editor. If you could spare some time each month and would like to join a happy and enthusiastic committee, then give me a ring. I look forward to hearing from you. We hope to see you at the various events through this coming year. Fred - Chairman ADVA

All Saints Awbridge - March 2014 Living the mission of Jesus: As the church prepares to follow Jesus in the time of Lent, leading up to Easter, special course material is being used in our services, small groups and Messy Church called “Living the Mission of Jesus”. Key areas of discipleship, social transformation, re-imagining church and belongng together in Christ will be included. If you would like to attend any groups looking at these issues please contact housegroup leaders listed below or contact Fred Tucker 340709 or Mary Savage 367908. We had a great supper in Poppies in February when we enjoyed a talk by Malvena on her work in Ghana, through Southampton General Hospital, to improve anaesthetic services in rural parts of Ghana. She told us about her challenging trip in a Land Rover, to deliver ambulances, overland to Ghana. The annual service for Womens’ World Day of Prayer takes place on Friday 7 March at 7.30 pm at the URC in Braishfield, based on material prepared by the women of Egypt. Rwanda - How is God rebuilding his Church there? Come and listen to the story of Bishop Louis of Kigali, Rwanda on Tuesday 18 March, 7pm at Romsey Abbey. Bishop Louis has links with our diocese of Winchester as well as with the work of Samaritan’s Purse through Operation Christmas Child and family help project “Raising Families” which have brought support to many. Bishop Louis has a powerful story to tell of forgiveness and reconciliation since the terrible genocide of 20 years ago. Mothering Sunday is on 30 March so we will be celebrating this special day with a family communion for the benefice, at 10 am as a time to celebrate not only motherhood but also the mother church we all belong to. Flowers, simnel cake and refreshments as well! Our next First service is on 2 March 6.30pm. Do come and join this informal service of worship in Awbridge looking at Living the Mission of Jesus. Messy Church: Messy Church in February was a great celebration of light and epiphany bringing the light of Jesus into our homes and families, with families from across the benefice including 29 children. We made beacons of light, iced biscuits, light mosaics, sewed star bookmarks and celebrated it all in church, as well as enjoying a meal together. Next Messy Church will be Sunday 9 March in Awbridge Village Hall looking at Living the Mission of Jesus including making tempting cakes, a temple out of junk, sand labyrinths, donkey money boxes; all to explore themes of discipleship, social transformation, reimagining church and being part of a generous community! Awbridge Evening W.I. In January members enjoyed an evening meal together at Ampfield Golf Club. February’s speaker, Susan Howe, battled through floods and road diversions but eventually reached the Village Hall. Susan is a London Blue Badge Guide and gave a most interesting and amusing talk to Awbridge members and their visitors from other institutes. Her subject was ‘Animals in History’ and she began with fleas. She told us the fascinating story of how the Great Plague, spread by fleas, was contained in a Northumberland village. She also had many tales of cats in history, especially those in the Tower of London. Parrots and horses also featured in her repertoire; everyone was sorry when her time was up, and as a visitor remarked, ‘If only school history lesson had been as interesting!’. Several members had been guests at functions organised by neighbouring institutes, and all reported favourably. Notice was given of the Spring Council meeting which a delegate is to attend, also of the Test Valley Group Spring Meeting in April. Members were reminded that we are to run a stall at the Village Fete, if Summer ever comes! Several Page 6  |  Mar 2014

ideas were put forward for trips to places of interest, and we are to have a fund raising event in October. Next month is almost home grown. Roger Savage from Choice Plants will show us how best to plant a Spring container. If you want your patio to zing, come and join us on March 13th at 7.30pm and be assured of a warm welcome. We are pleased to announce that the Awbridge Craft & Chat group will henceforth be meeting in the Committee Room at Awbridge Village Hall from Friday 7th February 2014 from 10.00am until 12 noon and fortnightly thereafter. If you enjoy one or all of the many types of needlecrafts available or have any other craft that is easily portable (and not too messy!) you could bring it along. You may even like the opportunity to learn a new skill from someone who is experienced. The idea is to spend a couple of relaxed hours making friends whilst making an object – make something for yourself or make things for the shoeboxes or other worthy causes. Refreshments will be available. If you would like to know more, please contact Sue Franklin on 01794 322185.

Lost Property Found on Saturday 1st February on one of the green picnic benches outside of the Village Hall, the following property: Child’s dark blue coat with light blue lining (possibly 6-8 year old) together with red and black camera case containing a purple Fujifilm digital camera. I have further details of coat label details and of the camera if required. If this belongs to you or you know who owns them please contact John Thompson on 341102.

Awbridge Hill Wildlife Sanctuary Residents of Awbridge should be made aware of a current application to convert a barn and workshop within the confines of the wildlife sanctuary, to that of an agricultural/forestry workers accommodation. The main reason why the application is being made is to attempt to challenge the current planning system and encourage debate, so that environmental project of this type be given better consideration in the future, so as to offset the negative effects of local development. Authorisation for the construction of the barn and workshop was granted in 1999 by TVBC, since which time the building has also served a purpose for accommodating volunteers involved in conservation work, including groups staying overnight. Activities have included coppice woodland management, charcoal burning, tree planting and other tasks, involving a wide range of individuals from different backgrounds, in work across the Test Valley. As the barn/workshop is restricted to agricultural and forestry use, such activities currently contravene planning laws. If the application is granted, then the condition of residency would be for the purpose of management of the area for wildlife conservation, livestock and to manage public access. No substantial changes would be required, so as to retain the building and its surrounds in its current rustic style, in keeping with the ecologically sensitive environment that we have been working for the last 17 years to create. Due to the heavy rainfall and stormy weather, the local authorities have requested that Parish Councils undertake their statutory duties to work with the government agencies so that urgent action be taken wherever possible, to alleviate risk of flooding of roads and properties, through ensuring the maintenance of all water courses, ditches and culverts. Ultimately the issue is that of enforcement, requiring that all land owners manage their road side ditches, trees, hedges and watercourses, keeping them free from obstruction. In some parishes, lengthmen have been employed to keep road side ditches free of obstructions such as silt and windblown trees. In other parishes, flood wardens have been appointed. Around the parish of Awbridge there have been a number of incidents, such as flash flooding which breached the railway embankment at Kimbridge at about midnight on the 23rd December, threatening to wash the railway track away. On Christmas Eve, Salisbury Lane became impassable to traffic due to flooding, which also threatened nearby properties, whilst Danes Road, Dunbridge Lane and Stanbridge Lane were all blocked by fallen trees. This situation resulted in emergency services being delayed in attempting to respond to a washed away car in the River Dun. In an attempt to manage the effects of storm damage and flood water, since the beginning of 2014, substantial emergency work has been undertaken in conjunction with Peter Allen of Awbridge Parish Council, in “Operation Wellington Boot”. Up until about 70 years ago there were a number of individuals actively employed to maintain lengths of ditches and the lines of drainage pipes in this area of the Test Valley. All knew how to handle a spade, many having served their apprenticeships digging trenches during the two world wars. These men were known as lengthmen and linesmen. Their jobs in winter, included managing the line of water courses across farmland, up to the sources of springs, so as to ensure clean water in an age when drinking water came out of a well by the bucket and the toilet was a shed down the end of the garden. One such character was “Slogger” Olden who lived at Carters Clay and who according to his son, spent his time in the wettest of winters, slogging around (in ditches), and slogging out (with a spade). By the 1970’s ditch diggers in Awbridge and neighbouring parishes, had largely become an extinct species, replaced by the JCB and its operator, who scoured ditches clear and void of all wildlife, oblivious of the environmental havoc they were causing. Page 8  |  Mar 2014

The photo below, taken on the 15th February 2014, shows the extent of flooding of the Test Valley from Brook towards Kimbridge, with Awbridge on the horizon in the top left corner.

Cattle Award I try to watch Countryfile on BBC whenever possible but it seems they have missed out on one of the best stories in this part of the world: a local story that involves a champion Simmental Heifer and local farmer Will Hillier. For those who have no idea what I am talking about the Simmental is a breed of cattle that first found its way to Britain back in the 1970s, from the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland. Breeding such a fine animal is a good story on its own but when entering it into competition against farmers from areas that included The Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and of course Hampshire even more so. Will Hillier of Butlers Wood Farm knew he had a three year old heifer that stood a good chance against all comers. The heifer had been bred on Butlers Wood Farm so Will was well aware of the animal’s background and history. When it was entered in the Fatstock Show Market in Salisbury three weeks before Christmas he was more delighted than surprised when the Heifer easily won in its category. On Sunday the 8th of January at the Show market dinner in Salisbury, Will was presented with the Perpetual Shield, a trophy that has been proudly won annually for at least fifty years. Congratulations Will, we are all proud of you!

Awbridge secures Hampshire Commemorates funding Awbridge is among the communities who will benefit from funding from Hampshire County Council under a scheme to mark 100 years since the start of the First World War, and the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Funding of between £200 and £2,000 to help match-fund community-led projects and events has been made available through the ‘Hampshire Commemorates’ scheme. The money has been awarded to organisations encouraging and providing opportunities for individuals and communities to benefit from a project, activity or event to commemorate these historic milestones. The Parish Council applied for funding for a project entitled, ‘A window to our past, present and future’, a community project to design and install a lasting memorial in the form of a commemorative window at the village church. The window will be designed by children from the local primary school after talking with local veterans. Another aspect of the project is a ‘Diary of a Village at War’, which will draw in information collected from local residents to be shared with the whole community. On hearing news of the grant, Councillor Mark Caplen, Chairman of the Parish Council, commented: “This is really marvellous news. I am grateful to Hampshire County Council for supporting the Awbridge project, which will bring together the whole community to commemorate these historic events”. If anyone is interested in being involved with the project they should email the parish clerk, Ian Milsom, at clerk.awbridge@parish. hants.gov.uk or write to him at 6 Pollards Moor Road, Copythorne, Southampton SO40 2NZ. Ian is keen to hear from people who can contribute articles, based on their own experience, or on stories handed down in families, about war-time. Recipes, and ‘make-doand-mend’ ideas, to reflect the experience of the civilian population during war time, will also be grateful received. Page 10  |  Mar 2014

Sticky Chocolate drop cakes This easy layered traybake is inspired by American coffee cakes – which contain no actual coffee, but are meant to be eaten with your morning cuppa. If you were really pushed for time, you could use a very good quality soft jam for the filling, but it will be much sweeter. Ingredients 250g pack unsalted butter 300g golden caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 large eggs 200g self-raising flour 50g cocoa 100g milk chocolate drops

For the topping 85g butter 85g caster sugar 200g light condensed milk 50g milk chocolate drops, plus extra, to scatter

Method: 1. Butter and line a traybake or small roasting tin, about 20 x 30cm. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Gently melt the butter in a large saucepan, cool for 5 mins, add sugar, vanilla and eggs, then beat until smooth with a wooden spoon. Stir in the flour, cocoa and ¼ tsp salt. Stir in the milk chocolate drops and bake for 35 mins until risen all over and a skewer comes out with a few damp crumbs. 2. For the top, gently heat 85g butter and 85g caster sugar together until both are melted. Stir in 200g light condensed milk and bring to a boil. Cool for 5 mins, then stir in 50g milk chocolate drops to melt. Spread over the cold cake, scatter with more chocolate drops and cut into squares. Katy Stimson

Kooking with Kate Kate Buchan, Sous Chef at Kimbridge Restaurant. Gives you your Seasonal Recipe

Jellied Rhubarb & Vanilla Soup A fun and different way to eat rhubarb This recipe serves 6 persons Shopping List: 500g rhubarb 400g caster sugar 1 vanilla pod 1 glass of white wine (275 ml)

3 gelatine leaves 800ml cold water Clotted cream to serve

How to make it: Trim the rhubarb both ends and very neatly cut the rhubarb into 5cm lengths, then cut each length into strips about the size of a thick matchstick and set aside for now. Place the sugar, vanilla pod and white wine into a medium saucepan and pour in the water, stir all together and place over a medium heat and gradually boil, stirring occasionally. Turn up the heat so the syrup boils really fast, then turn off the heat and stir in the rhubarb. Cover the pan with a lid and leave to cool completely. Once cold, pour off 350ml of syrup and set to one side. Place the remaining rhubarb and syrup in the fridge. Soak the gelatine in cold water, place the 350ml of syrup back into a small pan and heat up, but do not boil. Once hot turn off the heat and squeeze the water out of the gelatine. Add the gelatine to the warm syrup and stir until dissolved. Place the syrup into 6 serving bowls and place in the fridge and chill overnight. Once the jelly is set, gently break up the jelly a little, then give the rhubarb a good stir and using a slotted spoon. Divide the rhubarb evenly into the 5 bowls, pour over a little of the syrup from the rhubarb and place a spoonful of clotted cream on top of each bowl and serve.
