From the Editorial Team Every time I start the collating of the next edition of Awbridge News I gaze upon the email inbox and worry I’ve not enough to fill the pages. 2 hours later I then wonder where it has all come from! This edition being no exception, but hopefully the following pages are as informative and of interest as the past editions have been. Unless noone has told me how bad they are! This edition should just come out in time to be on your doorstep prior to the Produce Show on September 7th, so if you hadn’t planned on entering do consider it. If not, it is still well worth a visit on the day to admire the efforts of the villagers. It always impresses me the quality of the produce on show, as well as the potentially tall tales as to how they were grown so big. By the time this reaches you we will have had to suffer yet another set of road closures, this time taking out the road by Kimbridge. The signs only say 2 days but I can’t be the only one viewing that with cynicism! Research with the local authority tells me that there is a rolling cycle of carriageway improvements going on until the Autumn, but plenty of notice will be given to local residents of any closures. If you do happen then to see a fallen over roadwork sign, do stop to pick it up as I had to with one of the Kimbridge ones last week; your fellow villagers will thank you for it. All that remains to say as we head towards the start of a new school term (how many school kids hate me for saying that?) is that a hot summer can sometimes lead to a harsh winter. I’m hoping we aren’t seeing snow drifts in September, but remember don’t be a stranger to those neighbours who are alone and would appreciate a friendly face in times of need.

Record Turn Out For Village Bbq On a balmy Friday evening in July, Awbridge Church combined with the First Responders to provide a barbeque for 90 plus villagers at Awbridge Village Hall. A wonderful time was had by all with the highlights of the evening being the water rockets for the young ones and the delicious homemade ice cream provided by Roger Savage of Poppies for the young and the not so young. Many thanks to those who came and to those who provided an array of tasty salads. James Alexander

Awbridge Village Hall Annual General Meeting Tuesday 24th September 2013, 7.30pm in the Village Hall committee room.

Bear and Ragged Pumpkin and Halloween Show This year’s show will take place on Saturday October 19th at the Bear and Ragged Staff in Michelmersh. This is a family event throughout the evening starting from 5pm this year (please note new times). There will be a barbecue, draw, tombola, produce, guess the weight of the pumpkin etc. and entertainment on offer. As well as our fund raising stalls we would like children and adults to dress up for our themed evening ‘Pumpkins or Halloween’. Please bring along any marrows or pumpkins you have grown however big or small you may win prettiest or ugliest, or best matched pair. We also have a class for ‘best judged garden produce’, and novelty entries for children and adults. Get your creative skills going and turn your pumpkin or marrow into something amazing. If not, maybe you would like to carve one instead. Entries can be taken from 4pm with final weigh-in at 7.30pm.

Awbridge Evening W.I. A well attended August meeting welcomed Jill Daniels who gave an enthralling talk on Secret Haunts of Hampshire. Although the majority of our members are Hampshire born and bred, many of the places and stories which Jill showed and talked about were new to us. We were taken from the Quaker churchyard to Coombs Gibbet and from John Arlott’s house to Woodgreen Village Hall; fascinating glimpses of times past, almost on our doorsteps. A really enjoyable evening. During business, members were asked to back Romsey W.I.’s campaign to support Romsey’s shops and to donate bras for the Air Ambulance appeal. The trip to Oxford had been very successful and the legal London trip and a visit to Barnum at Chichester’s Festival Theatre are fast approaching. In October there is to be a fund raising Ceilidh and the Annual trip to Bath is scheduled for November. It was suggested that members might enjoy classes in Morris Dancing and willow weaving as new activities to try. Next month we have more local history with Jack Wilson talking about Medieval Southampton. Visitors will be welcome to join us on September 12th at 7.30 pm.

Craft And Chat??? Would you be interested in becoming part of a ‘Craft & Chat’ group to begin this September? You may have a neighbour, friend or relative who would also like to come with you. If you enjoy one or all of the many types of needlecrafts available or have any other craft that is easily portable (and not too messy!) you could bring it along. You may even like the opportunity to learn a new skill from someone who is experienced. The idea is to spend a couple of relaxed hours making friends whilst making an object – make something for yourself or make things for the shoeboxes. Ideally, it would be lovely to spend time together in one another’s homes but failing that, we could meet in the church rooms. Refreshments will be available and we would need to ascertain an overall preference for morning or afternoon gatherings and the best day. All Saints Awbridge - September 2013 As we move into September we begin to enjoy the harvest of fruits, farming and horticulture all around us, and are thankful for all the produce, gifts, resources, skills and talents we are given. Some of your home-grown produce may even be award winning at ADVA’s produce show but even this produce is still part of God’s generous gifts to us, even if you have to put in the actual spade work! On Sunday 22 September we have our Harvest Festival Family service at 9.30 am followed by lunch in the village hall, do come and join us from 12.30 pm. We are once again supporting the Basics Bank run by Southampton City Mission, and the need is growing with more people needing food and clothing than previously. The food and clothing is only given to those with referral vouchers from authorised agencies and is given out by volunteers through church communities in Southampton: www.southamptoncitymission.co.uk/donations. See list below for items requested, please bring what you can offer, to our harvest service and/or lunch. We had a great BBQ jointly with Awbridge First Responders, in July with 70+ people enjoying scrummy burgers, homemade ice cream and the joys of firing water rockets, on a sunny warm evening for a change. Pistachio Biscotti Ingredients 175 grams plain flour ½ teaspoon baking powder 175 grams caster sugar 100 grams pistachios (unsalted, shelled and roughly chopped) 2 medium eggs (beaten) 1 teaspoon vanilla essence You can also add 100 grams of chocolate chips. Method 1.Preheat the oven 180C/Fan 160C/Gas Mark 4. Lightly grease a baking tray. 2.Sift the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a bowl. Add sugar, pistachio nuts, beaten eggs and vanilla essence. Mix together with a fork to make a soft, sticky dough. 3.Divide the mixture in half. With well floured hands, shape into 2 (8inch) sausages. 4.Place on the baking tray well spaced apart. Bake for 20 mins until pale golden and just firm. Cool for 10 mins. 5.Transfer to a chopping board; cut diagonally into 2cm thick slices. Place on baking tray, laying cut side down in a single layer. Return to the oven for 8-10 mins until the edges begin to turn golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Musings From Maurice… I think most people will agree that the British weather will always be the main topic of conversation in this country, but what comes next on the list? A few of us will remember the heated discussions back in the late fifties about that “dreadful noise” called Rock and Roll. It was going to turn all the young people into crazed zombies because the young women were spinning and dancing showing stocking tops and suspenders; absolutely terrible! Then we had the mini-skirts; the long conversations about such a small piece of clothing were unbelievable. Clothing trends have that knack of prompting conversation after all. The government and local councils started putting up those wonderful things called “Parking Meters” and to make sure we were all spending enough money the Traffic Wardens were invented. In all the generations since World War 2 these wardens were to be the most hated people in society. Leave your vehicle in the wrong place or next to a meter just for an hour or two and the fine was more than the cost of a week’s shopping. You might say nothing has changed but what about “Health and Safety”; those two words that have been forced upon us by our continental neighbours. Health and safety can be used as a new way of saying “I am lazy and I refuse to do it”.

A farmer friend called his usual fuel supplier, a local company he had been dealing with for about ten years. The tanker arrived but when the driver discovered he had to climb about four or five steps of a fixed ladder to attach the hose to the inlet on top of the tank he refused because of health and safety regulations. My friend called another dealer some distance out of the area who agreed to deliver in the next day or two. Unfortunately for my friend the distant dealer used a subcontractor which happened to be the same local company with the driver who had refused to deliver the fuel earlier. The tanker arrived and left without fulfilling his contract. This saga of unbelievable time wasting and cost was resolved when my friend had an official Health and Safety inspector check the situation. The inspector was amazed at the driver’s attitude and said there was no reason the fuel should not be delivered. As most who have read any of these articles in the past editions will know, I try and spend a lot of time in my caravan and there are times I see or hear things that make me wonder! Earlier this summer when it had been raining quite hard for several days, a caravan arrived, without prior arrangement, at the small site on Butlers Wood Farm. I think that anyone who tows a caravan or any kind of trailer should be aware about certain regulations including the fact that the towing vehicle should be powerful and heavy enough for the job. On this occasion the Irishman and his family turned onto the site, which has a slight downward gradient, so it was inevitable that the wet grass and the weight of the caravan took the driver to the far end of the site where they became stuck in the soft earth. George Hillier took his tractor and towing chain to the stranded family and offered to help. Passing one end of the tow chain to the car driver George told him to attach it to his car while he fitted the other end to the tractor. The Irishman, who still had his family in the car, refused saying he was wearing his best suit and was not prepared to get it covered in mud. George said he was tempted to say he was also wearing his best suit but correctly realised he would not be believed! Chain attached the car and caravan was towed to a solid area of tarmac. The Irishman said “wrong site” and drove away without a word of thanks. Obviously the man was, or had been, a Rock and Roll music enthusiast. Maurice Hibbard

Nectarine and Poppy Seed Cake This recipe serves 6 persons Shopping List: 8 oz self-raising flour 8 oz butter/margerine 8 oz caster sugar 3 whole eggs 2 tablespoons black poppy seeds 4 fresh nectarines How to make it: Pre-heat the oven to 180c / gas 6 / fan 160c. Using a 2lb loaf tin, lightly butter the inside of the tin with melted butter and line the tin with baking parchment.

Put the marg/butter and the sugar in a mixing bowl and beat until pale in colour and fluffy then add 1 egg at a time and beat in thoroughly (you may need to add a little flour after each egg to stop the mix from splitting - if the mix does split, don’t worry as it will come back together after all the flour is added). Sieve the remaining flour and carefully fold in and then add the poppy seeds. Mix evenly throughout the cake batter. Taking a nectarine, run a knife around it and gently twist the nectarine in half to remove the stone. Then repeat this on all the nectarines. Once the stones are removed, slice each nectarine into quarters and then into 3. Mix the nectarine slices into the cake batter. Pour the batter into the loaf tin and place in the pre-heated oven and cook for 20-30 minutes or until when stabbed with a skewer, it comes out clean. Then place the cake on a rack and leave to cool.
