Hello As spring turns into summer, we have a great programme of both indoor and outdoor theatre, with The Same Sky, a brand new musical set against the backdrop of WW1 in the Guildhall Theatre, followed by Urinetown, a musical from Big Adventures Youth Theatre Company. At Markeaton Park Craft Village our Outdoor Theatre season continues with Oddsocks’ hilarious Much Ado About Nothing. The Derby CAMRA Summer Beer Festival returns to the Market Place with a huge selection of real ale, cider, continental beers and live entertainment and at the Markeaton Park Craft Village our first Outdoor Cinema events take place with Ghost and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In September, we’re celebrating two ten year anniversaries, as Derby Festé returns with the unexpected, strange and ridiculous in a fantastic spectacle for the whole family. The weekend after the 10th Derby Folk Festival takes over the City Centre, with events taking place in the City Marquee, the Guildhall Theatre, Old Bell Hotel and Derby Cathedral and dance displays throughout the streets and free music performances across the weekend.

Big Adventures Youth Theatre

Set in a dystopian future where everyone has to pay for the ‘privilege to pee’, this hilarious musical riffs on everything from Brecht to Bernstein to show us the story of one man’s struggle to defeat the system and win justice for all! This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd. on behalf of Music Theatre International of New York.

From songwriter Phil Baggaley and author Tim Harvey comes the premier of a brand new musical. Set in the Nottinghamshire Coalfields against the backdrop of WW1, Billy, a poor miner, and Eileen, the pit owner’s daughter, are passionately in love. Forced apart by the Great War, will their love survive? A story of love, loss and reconciliation told with movingly beautiful songs.

Enchanted Entertainment

This summer, why not take part in a week-long series of workshops (9am-5pm daily) aimed at improving your musical theatre skills. Enchanted Entertainment will give children (aged 8-16) an energetic, fun-filled week, learning songs and routines from a variety of well-known West End and Broadway musicals and then performing in two shows on the final Saturday.

The 10th Derby Folk Festival returns to the City Marquee on the Market Place, the Guildhall Theatre, The Old Bell Hotel and Derby Cathedral. The Shahnameh was written over 1,000 years ago and stretches from creation to the fall of the Persian Empire. The award winning Gatepost Theatre Company return with Shakespeare’s forgotten Rock ’n’ Roll masterpiece, ‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’. Including hits Great Balls of Fire, Good Vibrations, The Young Ones and The Monster Mash this is a musical of meteoric proportions.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Billy, a writer, is reliant on teaching scriptwriting for a living and the bottle for oblivion; his sense of self-worth is teetering on the edge. When Mac, his best friend, a banker and would-be producer, offers him a screenplay to write, the offer is not all it seems… “Anyone can write… Writing is the great free market of artistic expression. There’s no exams to pass, no subs to pay, no fees, no licence. It’s open slather. Entirely self-regulatory. You can do whatever you please. Like banking.” A play for anyone who has tried to write a screenplay – or teach creative writing…

This brand new (and not altogether faithful) adaptation of the much loved Sherlock Holmes adventure follows the great detective to Baskerville Hall to uncover a murderer and end the legend of the diabolical Hound.

Cinderella is the classic fairy tale of a beautiful girl forced to serve her jealous stepsisters. Aided by the silly but loveable Buttons and a Fairy Godmother carefully watching over her, Cinderella dreams of escaping her misery and finding true love and happiness. A pumpkin magically transformed into a sparkling coach, mice into white horses, a glass slipper and a spell that breaks at midnight, this is the classic rags to riches story. Along with Cinderella’s best buddy Buttons and the magical Fairy Godmother pantomime goers will join the journey to escape the misery of her dastardly diva sisters and find true love in the arms of a dashing Prince. For Christmas 2016 there will be dazzling new sets & costumes, hilarious comedy, fabulous music and dance routines, lots of audience participation and fun for all the family. No one should miss Derby’s biggest ball – at Derby Arena.

Competitors get the chance to race against the 2009 F1 World Champion and a number of professional and amateur triathletes. As last year, individuals and teams of three have the chance to race twice during the day with the swim in Markeaton Lake, a cycle ride on closed roads into the city centre and then back to Markeaton Park for the run to the finish line. The weird and the wonderful return for Derby Festé 2016. Kicking off on Fri 23 Sep with fire-breathing Sarruga dragons stalking through the streets, this year’s celebrations will close with headline act Transe Express with their performance MÚ on Sat 24 Sep that will see Bass’ Recreation Ground transformed into an underwater wonderland. Colourful neon sea creatures elevated on a huge telescopic crane will cavort on the lit surface of the sea with the fish and other ocean dwellers weaving their way through the audience on the sea bed.
