Welcome to Beauty and the Beast at Derby Arena We hope this information will help prepare you for your visit. If you have any further questions, please contact the Sales & Information Centre on 01332 255800 or email boxoffice@derby.gov.uk. Relaxed performances offer an enjoyable environment for everyone including young people and adults with disabilities. The performances are adapted in various ways such as altered sound and lighting effects to make the show more accessible and during the performance there will never be a full black out in the auditorium. There is also a quiet area outside the auditorium to make the shows more accessible, this can be used if you want to leave the performance at any point, where you can relax before you are ready to return to the performance. We encourage everyone to enjoy the show and express their appreciation with a relaxed attitude to noise and movement. We want your trip to the theatre to be an enjoyable and pleasant one.

THE STORY The petite french suburb of Spondon on the Seine is ruled over by Prince Phillippe who values youth and beauty above all else. So when a mysterious stranger arrives at the castle, offering a single rose in exchange for shelter from the bitter storm, he dismisses her. However it is a trap, she is really an enchantress who uses her powers to curse him to live as a hideous beast forever unless he learns to truly love and be loved in return. Meanwhile, in the village, the Tour de France reaches it’s climax as local heartthrob Gaston wins the race. Most people consider him irresistible but he has set his sights on Belle, who unfortunately for him prefers to concentrate on her studies and help her father, the eccentric inventor Marcel. Gaston is not alone in his adoration of Belle as local bakery apprentice Idle Jacques also has a bit of a crush, and he has been putting his green fingers to the test trying to grow Belle a present. When news reaches Marcel that a shipment of his brand new invention ‘the fidget spinner’ has landed safely he sets off to the port at Dieppe. Betty Brioche, owner of Local Bakery ‘Le Birds’, takes a shine to Marcel and agrees to keep an eye on Belle. Deep within the forest Marcel strays from the path and is driven by wolves to the doors of a castle. Surrounding the doorway is a large briar of entwining roses, Marcel plucks one to take home to Belle. This simple deed angers the owner of the castle who has been watching him closely and who now takes Marcel hostage. It’s down to Belle and the rest of the gang to rescue Marcel from the fearsome beast, but looks can be deceptive and true beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Will Belle be able to look past the surface and free Prince Phillipe from the curse?
