Welcome It’s hard to write these welcome slots without launching into clichés about diverse programmes and something for everyone… However… with the programme at the Assembly Rooms, Guildhall Theatre and Derby Theatre including pantomime, circus, ice show, symphony orchestra, opera, live literature, in-house produced and touring theatre, comedy and dance, as well as folk, jazz, rock, pop and world music, it really is the most incredibly diverse programme with something for everyone… there, we said it! Quality theatre made in Derby continues with Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter and A Kind of Alaska playing in the Guildhall Theatre during February, whilst Marie Jones’ hilarious comedy Women on the Verge of HRT plays Derby Theatre in March. Booking also opens for two of the most exciting shows ever to be produced in Derby. There’s the world premiere of Lucy Gannon’s first stage play for nearly 20 years, Broken Hearted - a funny, poignant and profound exploration of loss and forgiveness which is staged at Derby Theatre this May. Plus the hottest ticket in the Midlands this autumn has surely got to be to see one of the UK’s finest actors, Robert Lindsay in Onassis produced by Derby LIVE in association with Chichester Festival Theatre for a limited run prior to transferring to the West End.

It’s great welcoming audiences to all our venues, but it’s been particularly rewarding to work in partnership with the University of Derby to start rebuilding audiences at Derby Theatre. This season, the vibrant, diverse programme there includes the wonderful Akram Khan Company’s performance of bahok presented in association with Déda. Derby LIVE’s extensive learning and inclusion provision continues to engage and involve the community in interacting with and, in the case of our youth and community theatres, in creating our programme. Details of how to get involved are on our website www.derbylive.co.uk Thank you for supporting Derby LIVE and we hope to welcome you to a LIVE event soon.

Peter Ireson, Director Pete Meakin, Artistic Producer

A classic adaptation of one of the world’s greatest fairytales - a magical story about the triumph of love over wickedness. When an evil mirror that distorts reality and magnifies all the bad and ugly things within people falls to earth and shatters into billions of pieces, one of these shards gets into the heart of a little boy, Kay. Kay becomes cruel and aggressive, rejecting his family and his best friend Gerda. He is entranced by the only thing that is still beautiful to him - tiny snowflakes. During the following winter, Kay is lured from his home by the beautiful but soulless and vindictive Snow Queen, who charms him with two kisses, making him forget about Gerda and his family completely. Kay’s friend Gerda will not accept that he has gone and sets out on a long and perilous journey to rescue him. In her search Gerda encounters a host of strangers to whom she relays her plight. Enchanted by her story and her innocence, each one assists Gerda - eventually leading her to the Snow Queen’s palace. But will Gerda manage to set Kay free at the end of her epic journey?

Opera della Luna

DIE FLEDERMAUS

One of the world’s most famous operettas, Die Fledermaus now gets a glittering new look by the country’s best small-scale operetta company. Opera della Luna have earned themselves a matchless reputation, this year celebrating 15 years of acclaimed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan and Offenbach. They now turn their hand to the “waltz king” Johann Strauss, and this most sparkling of scores. Dr Falke was once left to wander home, drunk, and dressed as a bat, by his friend Gabriel von Eisenstein. To exact his revenge he arranges for Eisenstein to attend an extremely risqué party

RUSSELL KANE Human Dressage

at the home of the outrageous Russian aristocrat, Prince Orlofsky. There Eisenstein seduces a mysterious Hungarian countess, who is in fact his own wife in disguise.

Fresh from his sell-out 2009 tour Gaping Flaws and one month residency at the prestigious Melbourne comedy festival, Russell returns with his highly anticipated new show.

This entirely new and saucy production is directed – with his own new translation – by Jeff Clarke and designed by Gabriella Csanyi-Wills – the team that created the company’s wonderful recent production of The Mikado.

Preening, posing, prancing. Why do we? How do we? Join the double if.comedy nominee and star of Live at the Apollo for an evening of fast-paced, tubthumping merriment.

Join Stick, Frank and Happy Larry (two men and a woman!) as they embark on another coach journey down the Rhine Valley. These long suffering drivers have seen it all and done it all; so as they head towards the Channel Tunnel with thirty old age pensioners in Paris, search for lost teeth in Koblenz and witness love affairs in Boppard... and after a four-day ‘Umpah’ party they make the long journey back. Funny, sad and cinematic you’ll be amazed as Stick, Frank and Happy Larry play many of the pensioners in a total evocation of a bus trip. Touching, funny and provoking comedy written by one of the nation’s leading prolific playwrights who has written over 50 plays! “Bouncers for the crinklies.” Hull Daily Mail “A funny, poignant, fascinating play that explores the old holidaymakers’ concerns with swelling feet, sitting over the coach wheel, food, flatulence, drinking and sex. Two classic Harold Pinter plays paired together in one evening

P25

This double bill portrays the Nobel-prize winning writer at two very different points in his career. Both plays, though, show one of the twentieth century’s greatest playwrights operating at the height of his powers.

THE DUMB WAITER In the basement of a Birmingham restaurant, two squabbling hit men await instructions for their next assignment. When will the call come, and who will their next victim be? Then the room’s dumbwaiter creaks into life, bringing a series of absurd instructions that will test their ingenuity and ultimately their loyalty. This one act play is a black, claustrophobic comedy with moments of absurdity, terror and tension.

ONE MAN LORD OF THE RINGS

A KIND OF ALASKA

Charles Ross, creator of the hugely successful One Man Star Wars Trilogy, returns with his equally hilarious follow-up – One Man Lord of the Rings – in which he recreates the enchanting world of Middleearth, armed with nothing more than a pair of elbow pads and his outrageous imagination.

After twenty nine years, Deborah is suddenly awoken from a deep coma by her doctor, Hornby. Absent from the world for so long, all she can cling to are the fractured memories of her vibrant youth. Confronted with her middle-aged sister, whom she can only remember as a child, will she finally be brought to accept the events of the years she has lost? Can she bridge the gap between this world and the one in which she has been suspended?

No props or costumes are required as Ross hurtles through the Tolkien trilogy – The Fellowship Of The Ring, The Two Towers and The Return Of The King – in just 3,600 seconds of unbelievable kinetic entertainment.

A Kind of Alaska was inspired by the acclaimed bestselling book Awakenings by Oliver Sacks MD, which was also adapted into the Oscar-nominated film of the same name.

If you’ve seen the films, read the books and named your first-born Frodo, don’t miss Ross’ zany take on the ever-popular epic saga.

DAVE GORMAN

AN AUDIENCE WITH SALLY MORGAN

In 2009, Dave Gorman set off on a unique national tour. The intention: to cycle over 1500 miles across Britain in 33 days... with a gig each night. I suppose that explains the title.

Now dubbed as Britain’s bestloved celebrity psychic, Sally Morgan returns by over whelming public demand.

Sit Down, Pedal, Pedal, Stop And Stand Up

Demand for the show has been so high that he’s decided to keep performing it... but this time without cycling from venue to venue. He’s obviously getting lazy. So now only the last bit of the title makes sense. But look at it from his point of view. Same show, fewer blisters. What would you do? Dave – whose hit Radio 4 series, GENIUS, started its BBC2 incarnation on our TV screens in spring 2009 - may be widely acclaimed as the pioneer of documentary comedy but with this show he’s gone back to his roots as a straight up, one-manand-a-mic stand-up.

Sally’s psychic power has been with her since she was nine months old and her reputation has been built from her close relationship with many high profile celebrities. Sally now brings her amazing abilities and her tremendous personality to the stage with a unique theatrical experience, which is both hugely entertaining and enlightening. This show has taken the UK by storm!

OVER THE RAINBOW

Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

The Eva Cassidy Story

by Jane Austen

Over the Rainbow is a compelling award-winning musical, which tells the life story of this legendary artist, following Eva’s life through dramatic scenes and stunning live renditions of her music including a haunting interpretation of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

A talented and world-class cast of actors and musicians recreate her original arrangements and recordings and pay a genuine and heartfelt tribute to a true artist who was not interested in fame and fortune, but wanted nothing more than to create beautiful music.

This show follows her life from a young age, growing up in a musical family, to her first professional gig at the Wild West World theme park; her first meeting with her boyfriend and mentor Chris Biondo; a rabblerousing rendition and recording at Blues Alley with Chuck Brown and culminating in her poignant and tragic death.

This is more than the life story of Eva Cassidy, which is an absolute must-see for all Eva Cassidy fans, it’s a show for anyone who’s lost someone they love.

Pride and Prejudice is one of the best known and most loved of Jane Austen’s novels and is being brought to life on the Derby stage in a new adaptation by Clare Snape. www.derbyshakespeare.org.uk

NICK HARPER

Son of the legendary UK singersongwriter Roy Harper, Nick played the guitar from the age of 10 and was surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up, so it was no surprise when Nick made his recording debut on his father’s Whatever Happened to Jugula? in 1985. Nick’s talent and energy entranced Roy’s fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist’s guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows - from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud.

sinfonia ViVA: Spring Residency

AUDIO LENS

He often segues from his own compositions to well-loved covers he makes his own - he takes on Presley, Zappa, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin, Monty Python and Public Enemy (yes, on an acoustic guitar). He dazzles audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado. After 6 studio albums, a double live CD and 2 EPs (including Instrumental, a stunning display of his guitar talents), Nick’s work is still as fresh and vital as that of his first solo release in 1994. The recently released sixth studio album, Miracles For Beginners, is a return to a more stripped-down acoustic based style, but, as with his highly personal 2004 “family album” Blood Songs, he still has time to sing about the most important things in his world family, friends, love, life.

Tue 2 Mar, 8pm Assembly Rooms – Darwin Suite £10

Composers James Redwood and Jack Ross and participants from across Derby will perform alongside sinfonia ViVA in this electrifying performance which will also feature the Orchestra playing Stravinsky’s Danses Concertantes and a newly commissioned work Audio Lens. Audio Lens will be written for, with and by participants from Derby and will explore the effect of focus. The performance will feature some newly created animations and students from Derby will work with an artist from QUAD to design engaging ways of presenting these. “Once again, the audience was left amazed at this huge pool of young talent, and the ability of the facilitators and ViVA’s musicians to channel all this creative energy into the final result.” Mike Wheeler, Derby Evening Telegraph Supported by Rolls-Royce plc, Derby City Council, Derby LIVE, Orchestras Live, QUAD, sinfonia ViVA and Arts Council England

Best friends Vera and Anna have very few things in common... Vera is bold, opinionated, bitter and constantly searching for excitement, whilst Anna is miserable but content to stay in her loveless marriage because at least then other people will think she is happy. But what they do have in common is that they are both the ‘wrong’ side of 40, both have ‘husband troubles’ and both have an undying love of the Irish singing sensation Daniel O’ Donnell... The highlight of their year is a trip to Donegal to see their beloved idol in concert, where they come face to face with the realities of their lives – loveless marriages, husbands in the clutch of mid-life crises, their impending menopauses and the prospect of being thrown onto the scrap heap of life.

Assisted by a handsome young waiter (who just happens to look and sound like Mr O’Donnell), Vera and Anna confront their fears and begin to realise that life doesn’t have to end when HRT begins. A fabulously feisty, funny and warm-hearted play, written by Olivier award-winning playwright Marie Jones, Women on the Verge of HRT wowed audiences and critics alike during its successful West End run. Described as a kind of “Women Behaving Badly” (BBC) it will have you in stitches one moment and tears the next! “Take two women of a certain age; add in Ireland’s singing sex icon and you’ve got a hit.” Daily Telegraph “The audience rocked with laughter.” The Independent on Sunday

FEAST OF FOLK

An evening with

A 3-course Feast of Folk served in Derby’s most prestigious venue, featuring the best from the national folk scene: MALINKY – formed in Edinburgh in 1989, Malinky went on to win the Danny Kyle Award at Celtic Connections the following year. Fiona Hunter vocals, cello, replaced Karine Polwart in 2005 joining founder members Steve Byrne vocals, bouzouki, guitar, Mark Dunlop vocals, whistles, bodhran, Mike Vass fiddle, and Derbyshire born Dave Wood guitar, bouzouki. After Feast Of Folk they tour Germany, Switzerland and Denmark. This is Celtic music at its best! BERNARD WRIGLEY – probably best known for his TV appearances in Phoenix Nights, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Dinner Ladies, and the very popular film Brassed Off. Bernard, the Bolton Bullfrog’s career has spanned four decades playing his hilarious songs and monologues in his own unique way. He puts the sauce on any feast!

CHUMBAWAMBA AND O’HOOLEY & TIDOW

Chumbawamba take to the stage once more to celebrate the release of their new album ABCDEFG. The theme of the album is music – that volatile stuff which both the band and their audience have shared for as long as they can remember – and the new songs cover such diverse topics as the wearing of iPods in public places, censorship of music under repressive regimes and the power of the voice. Oh, and Simon Cowell’s come-uppance.

RUTH NOTMAN TRIO - Finalist at the Derby In The Tradition Awards and the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards, Ruth makes a welcome return to the Assembly Rooms with her Trio.

They are joined on the tour by fellow No Masters artists O’Hooley & Tidow; dapper-suited gentlewomen with a wryly observant, melancholic and sometimes uncomfortable take on life, creating their very own brand of contemporary folk song, with stark and beautiful piano playing that some will recognise from Belinda O’Hooley’s time as pianist with the Unthanks. O’Hooley & Tidow will be playing songs from their new album, Silent June.

STEVE HOWE TRIO

For nearly 40 years, Steve Howe has been at the forefront of rock music as a model and inspiration for other guitarists and musicians, perhaps best known as a member of the progressive rock group Yes and latterly in the reformed Asia. Steve’s new trio project with his son Dylan Howe, rightly acclaimed as one of the best drummers of his generation and keyboard maestro Ross Stanley on Hammond organ, is in marked contrast to previous work. The March 2010 tour will coincide with the release of a new ‘Live’ CD titled Travelling. The trio will perform both original Steve Howe compositions, jazz, blues, solo guitar and Yes numbers, all specially arranged for the trio format.

Sierra Maestra have played a hugely significant part in the recent global explosion in popularity of Cuban music. Indeed, their ex-leader, Juan De Marcos González was the man who created Buena Vista Social Club while still with the band. Sierra Maestra have been stars of Cuban music ever since the late 1970s. They were the first group, and remain the best, of the modern era to play in the old-style son line-up: tres, guitar, trumpet, bongo, güiro and vocals - as during the great days of the 1920s and ‘30s.

They have been pioneers in reviving, and now redefining this style for new generations and reintroducing it into the Cuban mainstream. They named themselves after the mountain range in the eastern part of Cuba as a tribute to the birthplace of Son. Their hugely infectious dance music has wowed audiences at clubs and festivals and around the world and they never fail to get crowds up on their feet and dancing. The Future Is Unwritten

MEETING JOE STRUMMER by Paul Hodson

A passionate punk comedy about attitude, friendship and celebrity and a celebration of the man who set the agenda for a generation. Nick and Steve’s lives were transformed by Joe Strummer and The Clash’s potent mix of politics, soulful rock’n’roll and iconic imagery. 1978. The lads see The Clash for the first time, headlining the Anti-Nazi League carnival in Victoria Park. It’s as if they take an oath to stay true to the values embodied in that day… 2002. Strummer’s tragic and unexpected early death forces Nick and Steve to re-evaluate their lives.

Winner of a Fringe First award, this heartfelt, comic play charts Nick and Steve’s attempts to maintain their ‘oath’ to Strummer while living through Thatcherism, paying the bills and maintaining relationships - how the lads grew up in the real world in the shadow of their hero. “a magnificently simple, heartfelt, clear and brave show... it’s very funny but it’s one of only a couple of shows on this fringe that have actually made me cry.” The Scotsman “Paul Hodson’s marvellous play... it’s required viewing, not just for Strummer’s many admirers, but also for anyone who enjoys funny, perceptive and passionately sincere new writing.” Manchester Evening News “theatre’s High Fidelity.” Lyn The Guardian

“Through this ultimately powerful piece, Khan captures both the exhilaration and the desolation of a world on the move.”  The Guardian “Bahok unearths what the word ‘home’ truly means and is quite simply as close to perfect as anybody has a right to expect.” The Stage “A work of great texture and density.” The Daily Telegraph

RASPBERRY

Oi Oi! In a small wee town where tin was shaped and forged, a blacksmith had a daughter not quite the trim. Rita was a bit different. Now as far as the blacksmith was concerned this was a cosmic joke too far, so he set about changing things. Coz tin was his game, within which he’d achieved a modicum of fame, he tried to bend and shape her like a Uri Geller spoon. And that’s how it would have gone on if Spasticus and the Rays hadn’t come along and changed just about everything. Inspired by the life and songs of Ian Dury. Raspberry is a juicily gothic piece of musical theatre that muses on the idea of perfection and perfectability. STEPHEN VENABLES

ST GEORGE’S DAY CELEBRATIONS

In the last ten years, internationally acclaimed mountaineer Stephen Venables has twice repeated Sir Ernest Shackleton’s famous crossing of South Georgia.

Come and celebrate St George’s Day with the songs and dances of England in a special concert featuring:

In the Steps of Shackleton

Shackleton’s treacherous expedition to cross Antarctica via the South Pole is a tale of escape and survival more miraculous than any fiction. From an 800 mile ocean journey in a lifeboat, through 30 miles of glacial trekking with no mountaineering equipment, the incredible story of how they were able to summon a rescue party for their companions remains one of exploration’s great epics. The first Briton to climb Everest without supplementary oxygen, Stephen brings Shackleton’s extraordinary expedition to life, using his highly acclaimed photos and natural gifts as a storyteller to illustrate this treacherous journey, capturing the thrill of climbing, skiing and sailing in such a hauntingly beautiful place.

Brass Monkey: The original English powerhouse brass-meets-folk band and their “Deep English” sound with the incredible line up of: Martin Carthy vocals, guitar, mandolin, John Kirkpatrick - vocals, button accordion, anglo concertina, melodeon, Martin Brinsford - mouth organ, saxophone, percussion, plus Roger Williams and Paul Archibald brass section. Roy Bailey: Brings a mix of traditional and contemporary folk songs to the show. “Possessor of one of the finest voices in the folk world” The Guardian

Derbyshire Volunteers Big Band - some of the finest musicians and singers in the County. Ripley Morris Men - Derbyshire’s very own dance team celebrate the ancient ritual - Morris Dance.

OMAR PUENTE QUINTET

JOURNEY’S END By R.C. Sherriff

World-renowned Cuban jazz violinist, Omar Puente takes to the stage with a quintet featuring the outstanding pianist, Robert Mitchell.

Starring Graham Seed from The Archers and lead from Midsummer Murders and Adam Best from Holby City and Waking the Dead.

Classically trained, Puente has worked with some of the world’s greatest jazz musicians including Jools Holland, Courtney Pine, Ruben Gonzales and Tito Puente.

The young, talented and warweary Captain Stanhope is confronted with the fresh face of his past as an old schoolmate joins his platoon.

An exceptional music talent, Puente promises to thrill and uplift you with a wonderful mix of styles, bringing together elements of jazz, classical and, of course, Cuban salsa.

As the offensive looms ever closer, Stanhope must inspire his men to make the ultimate sacrifice for a war he no longer understands and for a cause he no longer remembers.

Fri 23 Apr, 8pm Assembly Rooms – Darwin Suite £12, concessions £10, under 19s free with full paying adult

This compelling play based on R. C. Sherriff’s own experience in the trenches of World War I with its heroism, humour and inevitable tragedy shows courage in the face of uncertain odds. All staged within Stanhope’s claustrophobic dugout, time creeps to a standstill as soldiers await their orders before racing to its heart wrenching climax as these young men face their ‘Journey’s End’. Produced by The Original Theatre Company, Icarus Theatre Collective, and Anvil Arts and in association with South Hill Park Arts Centre.

Lucy Gannon, creator of Soldier Soldier, Peak Practice and Bramwell, is one of the UK’s most sought-after TV writers. Derby LIVE is delighted to be staging her first new play for 20 years. Perspective slips and distorts when the person you love dies too young and too suddenly. The future, which stretched so invitingly before you, is shattered and the past, even the most mundane of pasts, achieves great significance in retrospect. How can Nancy, at the best of times ‘a difficult woman’ keep her emotional balance when Eddie, the love of her life, dies just days before their wedding? And how can she keep his memory alive, and protect it from those who remember him with less affection but perhaps more honesty?

cranford THE MUSICAL

Dramatised by Alison Carthy & Caroline Reader from the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell Original music composed by Dave Culling

Who needs Dame Judi Dench when you have the limitless talents of Derby LIVE Community Theatre?! Following the phenomenal success of 2009’s production of Peer Gynt on Cathedral Green, Derby LIVE Community Theatre return this year - to the well-loved streets of Cranford. It’s the 1840s and Cranford, a small Cheshire market town, is on the cusp of great change. The railway is pushing its way relentlessly towards the town from Manchester, bringing fears of migrant workers and the breakdown of law and order. This classic tale takes a dip into the lives of a group of spinsters and widows who struggle in genteel poverty to maintain their standards of propriety, decency and kindness. Miss Matty Jenkyns is much-loved for her kindness.

Wed 23 - Sat 26 Jun See diary page 91 for performance times Derby Theatre Tickets from £8. See page 76 for details.

Meanwhile, her elder sister and fellow spinster, Miss Deborah - Cranford’s moral guardian - enforces a rigid social code and dominates the town’s women. The arrival of handsome new doctor, Frank Harrison from London, causes a stir; not only because of his revolutionary medical methods, but also because of the effect he has on many of the ladies’ hearts in the town. A sensitive and moving portrait of life and manners in an English country village, which also packs a real emotional punch, promises to be a sure-fire hit with theatregoers of all theatrical tastes. “An exuberant, rousing performance.” Derby Evening Telegraph on Peer Gynt

Unique... The new era for live theatrical productions at Derby Theatre officially got under way in October 2009 with the first public performances taking place. Since the University of Derby stepped in to purchase the lease for the former Derby Playhouse we have been busy refurbishing the theatre and improving the facilities to welcome the public, performers, students and staff. We hope you will see even more developments to your theatre over the next few years. The University of Derby’s vision has been to create a ‘learning theatre’ - where staff and students can gain vital work experience and skills in all forms of theatre arts.

Courses from Art to Zoology! Whatever you’re interested in, we’ve probably got the course to suit you. And you can study part time, online, full time or at work – whatever suits you best. Come and see us at one of our open days in Derby or Buxton and talk through your options. Find out more at www.derby.ac.uk.

The uniqueness of the partnership between the University and Derby LIVE, who manage the calendar of public performances, is bringing the best professional, student and amateur productions to this great city centre venue. Derby Theatre is available for private hire, and provides a stunning range of facilities. We can present your corporate event at the theatre, or help you look beyond traditional management techniques to provide arts-based training opportunities to employees from the private and public sectors. If you would like to talk about opportunities at Derby Theatre or give us feedback on how we are doing please contact: Gary Johnson, Theatre Manager Email: g.johnson1@derby.ac.uk Telephone: 01332 594250

P85

Disabled people’s toilets.

All areas except the balconies are accessible via lifts

Headsets and hearing aid attachments are available for your free use, just ask the Duty Manager.

Throughout the season we offer a number of British sign language (BSL) interpreted performances, look out for the symbol throughout the brochure and in the diary. Please let the Box Office know where you would like to sit: directly in front of the signer or on the opposite side, looking across the stage/action. Thanks to our sign interpreters: Sarah Gatford-Ball and Jill Newlands (The Snow Queen).

Throughout the season we offer a number of audio described performances for blind and partially sighted people. Free touch tours take place around an hour before the performance, with the chance to look closely at the set and costumes and often with a chance to meet some of the actors! Please let the Box Office know if you want to attend the touch tour, tickets are free. Look out for the audio description symbol throughout the brochure and in the diary. Thanks to our audio describers: Stef Bell, Naomi Wilds and Louisa Sanfrey. Captioning is available for selected performances (see diary or call Box Office as more are due to be announced). Words appear on screens either side of the stage at the same time as they are spoken – ideal for those who are deaf, hard of hearing or if you’d just like to read along.
