Welcome Hello there. Have you seen something you loved at Derby LIVE? Or maybe something that wasn’t quite your cup of tea? Either way, we’d love to hear from you – we’re doing it all for you, so let us know what you think. Drop us a line anytime at derbylive@derby.gov.uk Summer’s certainly not a quiet time for us here, and Derby LIVE’s home-grown theatre continues in May with the World Premiere of Broken Hearted (p12) – the first new stageplay for 20 years from sought after TV writer Lucy Gannon (creator of Soldier, Soldier, Peak Practice & Bramwell). Our Community Theatre will then be belting out Cranford the Musical (p37) in June! In September don’t miss your chance to ‘see it first’ catch Robert Lindsay in Onassis (p54), before it heads to the West End – and at a fraction of the price! The Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain, John Cooper Clarke and Postman Pat all make their first visits to Derby LIVE this Summer, along with a host of other fresh acts for you to come and sample. This season also has the return of some favourite artists and shows – from Jimmy Carr and Ken Dodd through to Jane McDonald and Lesley Garrett, and we’ve even squeezed in a week of the ever popular Joseph! Each of our venues has a mix of shows on offer, so whether you enjoy a good laugh, sing, dance or drama you’ll be spoilt for choice. We are really excited to be hosting Every Second - the first Derby Jazz Biennale at the end of May - with a weekend that finishes with the stunning Courtney Pine.

As summer draws to an end in September, cross your fingers for sunshine, pack up your picnic and get down to The Darley Park Concert (p52). If you’ve never been you’re missing a treat. Come and see us in the Derby LIVE tent, where as usual we’ll have some exclusive ticket offers. It’s never too early to book for Christmas (oh no it’s not!) and this year we have some very special productions on offer. Aladdin (p60) and The Wind in the Willows (p58) are both part of our LIVEsaver deal (p6) so there’s no excuse not to be visiting us even more! If you fancy a part in Aladdin, our Fame Factor competition (p45) is for you. There are now even more ways to keep in touch with us so check out our website and You Tube channel (OfficialDerbyLIVE) where you’ll find clips and trailers for home-grown and visiting shows. You can follow us on Twitter or sign up for our e-newsletter on the website or text LIVE to 80480 to sign up for news and special offers. Of course we’re always pleased to see you so call into our Box Office either at the Assembly Rooms or at Derby Theatre anytime. Have a splendid summer – look forward to seeing you all soon.

This hotly anticipated work, originally a collaboration with the National Ballet of China, brings together a superb international cast of dancers. Derby LIVE and Déda

Akram Khan Company

bahok

Featuring a score by Nitin Sawhney, bahok, named after a Bengali word meaning ‘carrier’, explores the ways in which the body carries national identity and a sense of belonging. Khan’s dancers come from diverse cultures, traditions and dance backgrounds – Chinese, Korean, Indian, South-African, Slovakian and Spanish – and this rich mix of both spoken and dance language pushes the boundaries of movement vocabulary.

“Through this ultimately powerful piece, Khan captures both the exhilaration and the desolation of a world on the move.”  The Guardian “Bahok unearths what the word ‘home’ truly means and is quite simply as close to perfect as anybody has a right to expect.” The Stage “A work of great texture and density.” The Daily Telegraph

THE GRADUATE A play adapted by Terry Johnson

3 shows from £24 See page 6

Based on the legendary Oscar-winning film starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft, this hit in the West End and on Broadway is vividly brought back to the stage. When Ben graduates from college, his parents expect great things from him and push him towards a successful business career. Confused about his future and not wanting to follow the commercial path his affluent family and their friends assume he will take, his life is complicated when he becomes embroiled in a seductive affair with an older woman, Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father’s business partner. Although the affair eventually ends, the relationship comes back to haunt him as he finds himself falling for Mrs. Robinson’s daughter, Elaine! The Graduate features the music of Simon and Garfunkel and contains scenes of full nudity.

JOURNEY’S END by R.C. Sherriff

LIVE saver

3 shows from £24 See page 6

Starring Graham Seed from The Archers and lead from Midsummer Murders and Adam Best from Holby City and Waking the Dead. The young, talented and war-weary Captain Stanhope is confronted with the fresh face of his past as an old schoolmate joins his platoon. As the offensive looms ever closer, Stanhope must inspire his men to make the ultimate sacrifice for a war he no longer understands and for a cause he no longer remembers. This compelling play based on R. C. Sherriff’s own experience in the trenches of World War I with its heroism, humour and inevitable tragedy shows courage in the face of uncertain odds.

Based on the novel by Charles Webb and the motion picture screenplay by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry.

All staged within Stanhope’s claustrophobic dugout, time creeps to a standstill as soldiers await their orders before racing to its heart wrenching climax as these young men face their ‘Journey’s End’.

By special arrangement with StudioCanal. Originally produced on the London and Broadway stage by John Reid and Sacha Brooks.

Produced by The Original Theatre Company, Icarus Theatre Collective, and Anvil Arts and in association with South Hill Park Arts Centre.

by Lucy Gannon

Lucy Gannon, creator of Soldier Soldier, Peak Practice and Bramwell, is one of the UK’s most sought-after TV writers. Derby LIVE is delighted to be staging her first new play for 20 years. Perspective slips and distorts when the person you love dies too young and too suddenly. The future, which stretched so invitingly before you, is shattered and the past, even the most mundane of pasts, achieves great significance in retrospect. How can Nancy, at the best of times ‘a difficult woman’ keep her emotional balance when Eddie, the love of her life, dies just days before their wedding? And how can she keep his memory alive, and protect it from those who remember him with less affection but perhaps more honesty? Is he destined to become a sainted remote figure, preserved in everyone’s anxiety to speak only good of the dead? Or will he, amazingly and shockingly, walk back into her life in all his fleshy fallibility? And will Nancy ever come to terms with the difference between her perfect dead lover, and the all too imperfect living one? Contains strong language.

MARK BEAUMONT

What would you do for your son? A heartfelt story about love, family and the lengths a parent will go for a child. John Stefanovich rules the streets of his estate. He rules the gangs, the drugs and the Police. Four months ago he stabbed a 16-year-old boy in a busy street.

The Man who Cycled the World is the remarkable story of adventurer Mark Beaumont. In 2008, he broke the world record for cycling solo around the world, an epic journey of over 18,000 miles, cycling 100 miles per day for over half a year. In 2009, Mark set out on his second ultra-endurance solo challenge; to cycle the length of the American Cordillera.

Local printer, Brian Shelton is married with three kids and two mortgages. Four months ago, when his eldest son was stabbed on a crowded street, no one saw anything; but everyone knows everything.

On this 15,000 mile expedition, Mark not only cycled down the longest mountain range on the planet, but climbed the continent’s two highest peaks, Mt McKinley in Alaska and Aconcagua in Argentina, making his second self-filmed documentary for BBC1 - Cycling the Americas.

Hard Graft

KNIFE EDGE

With nowhere to turn and desperate for justice, Brian prints posters challenging John Stefanovich to a duel to the death.

The Man who Cycled the World

The Man who Cycled the World is Mark’s story of his adventures, a personal rollercoaster of mental and physical endurance as well as a fascinating insight into the world we live in. “Truly inspiring, the sort of thing that makes you want to get off the couch, out of the house and on the road.” The Scotsman

THE STRANGE CASE OF DR JEKYLL & MR HYDE

Derby LIVE International Classical Concert Series

International touring company European Arts Co. invites you on a trip down the smoggy, gaslit alleyways of Victorian London to hear The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Conductor John Wilson Soloist Barbara Rearick (mezzo soprano) Craig Odgen (guitar)

Set in a Whitechapel tavern in 1888, a versatile ensemble cast will tell the gruesome story of Dr Jekyll and his charismatic alter-ego using only the things you would find in a pub. Barrels, tankards, darts, brasses, bar stools, soda siphons, billiard cues, yards of ale and even Aunt Sally are used to create the physical world of Victorian London with great ingenuity, horror and imagination. Come, if you dare, to the dark side and witness a chilling, thrilling and highly entertaining reinvention of this classic tale.

HALLé ORCHESTRA

Chabrier Rodrigo Falla Bizet Ravel

Espana Concierto de Aranjuez El Amor Brujo (Love the Magician) Carmen, selection Bolero

“European Arts Company provides sheer entertainment but also an excellent opportunity for seeing high-quality live theatre.” International Herald Tribune

The Hallé end Derby LIVE’s Classical Concert season in Spain, as heard through both French and Spanish ears. Bizet’s opera Carmen was one of the first French works to exploit Spanish dance rhythms. Chabrier wrote his colourful rhapsody after a holiday in the country, when he encountered the flamenco that is also in the background of Ravel’s hypnotic 16-mintue orchestral crescendo. Falla’s ballet score gives us a taste of flamenco at closer range, while Rodrigo’s popular concerto reflects a more courtly strain in Spanish culture.

Tom Fry. Punished for the crime he committed. Punished for being deaf. Tom Fry was born deaf and ever since he was a little boy has struggled to adapt in a world where sound is paramount and communication is heavily reliant on voice. His life has always been about fitting in, in order to accommodate his deafness. His passion is climbing, and his dreams are of scaling the tallest mountain in the Elbrus. But when he’s told one day that he’ll probably never be able to realise his dream because he can’t hear, years of repression and isolation take hold of him and he reacts in the most violent way possible. Tom is sentenced and sent to prison. Here he finds himself not only being punished for the crime he committed, but being punished also for being deaf. Double Sentence is a play about a young man’s struggle to be understood in a world where even the loudest fight to be heard. Double Sentence uses British Sign Language, captions and spoken word to be accessible to both deaf and hearing.

Fools Gold

Lucy Porter’s latest solo show is a witty romp through the history of gold. In these times of recession, gold is prized more highly than ever, as other forms of currency grow worthless. What’s so special about gold, and why is it that human beings have long been obsessed with the yellow, shiny stuff? The show will feature live alchemy, a tribute to Mr T. and a very valuable, big gold thing with security guards and everything! Lucy’s tour shows have been sell-out hits every year since 2005. Fool’s Gold promises to be another giltedged treasure.

These urban minstrels pen harmony drenched melodies you’ll find yourself humming, and have wowed audiences across the globe with their powerful, passionate and spirited live show. The beauty and mystery of Po’Girl’s music springs from the dynamic, mesmerizing bond shared by its two principal singers and writers, Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira. One of Britain’s most popular writers and performers, Gervase is best known for his five autobiographical novels The Other Side of the Dale, Over Hill and Dale, Head Over Heels in the Dales and Up and Down in the Dales, The Heart of the Dales.

JOHN COOPER CLARKE + Frank Sidebottom

The bard of Salford comes to Derby with his rapid fire delivery of poems, razor sharp gags and tales of the absurd and hilarious. During the punk era he supported bands such as Buzzcocks, Joy Divison and The Fall, being regarded as a “Punk Poet”, whereas today, bands like The Arctic Monkeys cite him as a major influence. A firm favourite at major festivals throughout his 30 year career, John still shuns publicity, yet is without doubt a living legend and someone that everyone should experience live to fully appreciate.

Gonzo Moose

IS THAT A BOLT IN YOUR NECK?

Total Theatre Award nominees and critically acclaimed comedy trio Gonzo Moose bring their spoof gothic horror to the Guildhall Theatre. As lightning flashes across the sky, the rugged silhouette of an old dark house looms into view. Lost in a storm, this seems like the only possible refuge – but what happens when you hear mysterious moaning in the middle of the night? Behind every door lurks unimaginable horror. Compared to Peepolykus and Spymonkey, Gonzo Moose consist of three fearless and daring actors who play over 20 roles in a gripping and fast-paced comedy with horrific experiments, mind-boggling love, and a sensational death-defying finale.

With his keen ear for the absurd and sharp eye for the ludicrous, Gervase Phinn has delighted audiences all over the UK with stories of his experiences as a school inspector.

Joining John will be the forever middle-aged, sharp-suited culticon pop star from Timperley - Frank Sidebottom (that is, if his Mum lets him!)

MARTIN STEPHENSON

THE BIG ONE

As leader of the Daintees, Martin’s musical education included a list of names as diverse as Ray Manzerac, Patti Smith, John Cooper Clarke and Jonathan Richman.

The Big 1 @ Chaddesden Park will be a fun-packed day of family entertainment, beginning with a parade of people in fancy dress, decorated pushchairs and mobility scooters.

After the demise of the band, Martin evolved into an unusual and idiosyncratic songwriter in the early 80’s, making his name as a strong performer and anti industry bard.

The parade will start at 11.30am, route and start venue to be confirmed at a later date.

He has released over 20 albums and continues to plough his own furrow, performing throughout the UK and drawing increasingly on folk and traditional musical roots.

@ Chaddesden Park

The park will play host to numerous events available for the whole family throughout the day including various dance displays, a fun dog show, falconry display, fun fair, climbing walls, donkey rides, balloon modelling, face and pot painting, circus skills, Japanese kites and lots of stalls.

One of the most popular operas ever written, Bizet’s Carmen is packed with Spanish heat, steamy seduction and gypsy passion. From the cigarette factory to the bull-fighting arena, Carmen has a devastating effect on all around her leaving a trail of broken hearts and broken men. Stepping OUT

In a dusty church hall, exprofessional dancer Mavis Turner holds her weekly tap class. Every Thursday, in stumbles her well-intentioned but not overly talented troupe – the awkward but hugely enthusiastic Lynne, snooty Vera, streetwise Maxine and the rest of the group – all brought together to dance as if no one is watching, and hopefully no-one ever will! That’s until they’re invited to perform at a charity gala. As disbelief is replaced by sheer terror, can this bunch of amateurs pull together and put on the performance of a lifetime?

Brian Capron, known to millions for his award-winning portrayal of the sinister Richard Hillman in Coronation Street, plays the bumbling but lovable Geoffrey, whose mid-life crisis might just bring with it some mid-life reward. Anita Harris, one of the brightest singing sensations of the ‘60s, and famously set pulses racing as Nurse Clarke in Carry On Doctor plays everybody’s favourite snob, Vera. For twenty-five years, Stepping Out has delighted audiences with its heart-warming and hilariously funny story, proving that in dancing, as in life, it’s always better to follow your own tune.

ITV’s Popstars to Operastars finalist and star of resurgent singing sensations The Nolan Sisters, Bernie Nolan is set to continue her triumphant return to the heady heights of British entertainment as she reprises her lead role and embarks on a 20-date UK stage tour of the acclaimed comedy musical, Mum’s the Word... The smash-hit comedy about how children ruin change your life forever. Five women... five stories…one common thread... a hilarious and intimate look at motherhood. Mum’s The Word has played eight record-breaking UK tours and a West End run. The award-winning, sell-out theatrical phenomenon is on the road again - liberating, enlightening and educating, but mainly just washing the secret, funny, dirty laundry of motherhood in public for the very first time. This award-winning production has received critical acclaim and attracted sell-out audiences throughout Australia, Canada and across Europe. UK audiences have loved every minute of the show which the press claim “should have been sponsored by the NHS.” Tracy Shaw

A new play by Martin Sherman Directed by Nancy Meckler

Aristotle Onassis was in his time the most powerful of shipping magnates. He used his immense wealth to pursue women, personal vendettas, political influence on an international scale and yet more wealth. First performed to great acclaim and a sold out run at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre, this captivating new play by Martin Sherman is opening in Derby prior to the West End. Onassis is an often explosive account of how those with great power and wealth live lives detached from the moral code and realities of ordinary mortals. It’s a story about money, sex and power and is inspired by the true story of the relationships between Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and Maria Callas. “Robert Lindsay’s delicious display as the notorious Greek playboy and shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis ... is a salacious delight” The Daily Mail

Sponsored by

Robert Lindsay’s distinguished theatre career includes The Entertainer, Richard III, Oliver!, for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, and Me and My Girl for which he won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Musical and the TONY Award for Best Actor in a Musical. For television he is best known for his roles in My Family, Jake’s Progress and GBH, for which he won a BAFTA award for Best Actor. His film work includes Divorcing Jack, Genghis Cohn and Remember Me. “Robert Lindsay moves with ease between the comic and the sinister. His Onassis is one of those highdefinition performances at which he excels.” The Daily Telegraph “Sherman writes sharp cutting dialogue.” The Times “Nancy Meckler’s production crackles with wit and intelligence.” The Sunday Times Contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.

Starring Vicki Michelle (‘Allo ‘Allo), Trevor Bannister (Are You Being Served and Last of the Summer Wine) and Mark Curry (Blue Peter). It seems that, for some people, 40 is a rather traumatic age. For Linda Harper, it certainly appears to be, as she starts worrying three years before her fortieth birthday. She is dissatisfied spiritually and physically with her 17 year marriage to the slightly staid George. However, following a drunken night, Linda decides to leave but in fact, it is George who moves out, giving Linda a chance to “find herself” through a variety of courses including aerobics and sculpting. When George returns to the family home, without his ‘crown jewels’, a few weeks later he and Linda discover that the flames of passion are not quite dead, albeit in need of a little fanning! Accompanied by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, Linda helps George to put the ex back into sex.

Unique... The new era for live theatrical productions at Derby Theatre officially got under way in October 2009 with the first public performances taking place. Since the University of Derby stepped in to purchase the lease for the former Derby Playhouse we have been busy refurbishing the theatre and improving the facilities to welcome the public, performers, students and staff. We hope you will see even more developments to your theatre over the next few years. The University of Derby’s vision has been to create a ‘learning theatre’ - where staff and students can gain vital work experience and skills in all forms of theatre arts.

Courses from Art to Zoology! Whatever you’re interested in, we’ve probably got the course to suit you. And you can study part time, online, full time or at work – whatever suits you best. Come and see us at one of our open days in Derby or Buxton and talk through your options. Find out more at www.derby.ac.uk.

The uniqueness of the partnership between the University and Derby LIVE, who manage the calendar of public performances, is bringing the best professional, student and amateur productions to this great city centre venue. Derby Theatre is available for private hire, and provides a stunning range of facilities. We can present your corporate event at the theatre, or help you look beyond traditional management techniques to provide arts-based training opportunities to employees from the private and public sectors. If you would like to talk about opportunities at Derby Theatre or give us feedback on how we are doing please contact: Gary Johnson, Theatre Manager Email: g.johnson1@derby.ac.uk Telephone: 01332 594250
