Welcome …to another jam-packed season at Derby LIVE. Whilst we can’t predict what the weather will be like this summer, we can assure you of a glorious programme produced, presented, and hosted at Derby LIVE venues. If it should be a sizzling summer, we have the perfect ways to cool down, watching Peter Pan on Ice or having a drink at the annual Beer Festival or exposing some more flesh at the Tattoo, Body Art & Music Festival. Or why not bring your deck chair to the Market Place for one of the Royal Opera House productions beamed live to Derby’s Big Screen? Should the summer weather be a damp squib, then we’re got a programme to warm you up. Try listening to Blazin’ Fiddles; put on a woolly jumper and join Shaun The Sheep at the Assembly Rooms; or warm up on stage with the dancers from Tango Fire, before their performance of Flames of Desire. However, desires may go unquenched as the ladies of Derby LIVE Community Theatre withhold conjugal rights in our new adaptation of Lysistrata.

Our acclaimed season of produced theatre continue with Be My Baby at Derby Theatre, with a great sixties soundtrack and a play tackling issues of whether to give a child up for adoption, a theme which continues with the Johnson twins as Blood Brothers makes a welcome return. There also details of some of our exciting autumn season which is already on sale including this Christmas’ offer of Dick Whittington at the Assembly Rooms and Roald Dahl’s classic The BFG at Derby Theatre. Thank you for your continued custom and support. Peter Ireson Director of Derby LIVE and the Derby LIVE Team

It’s 1964 and until now Mary Adams’ life has revolved around her boyfriend and her Dansette record player. She’s 19, in love, unmarried and – as her mother has just discovered – seven months pregnant. The trouble is that Mary’s mother didn’t get her into grammar school for nothing. As far as she can see, there’s just one hope – St Saviours Mother & Baby Home. Here, Mary’s pregnancy can be kept secret, and the baby put up for adoption. Well, that’s as long as three other young mothers-to-be – worldly-wise Queenie, romantic Norma and ditzy Dolores – don’t ruin mother’s scheme.

First staged to unanimous acclaim in 1998, Amanda Whittington’s bittersweet comedy explores a hidden social history and is fast becoming a modern classic. Set against a swinging 60s soundtrack, prepare for an unforgettable evening of tears and laughter. Director Esther Richardson Designer Hannah Clark Lighting Designer Ian Scott Sound & Music Composition Jon Nicholls Choreography Imogen Knight

Sharing chores, laughs and records with new friends, Mary’s individuality starts to show as much as her bump. So, should she try and find a way to keep her baby?

Direct from Buenos Aires, Argentina’s hottest dance show returns to the UK.

The Blues Band Adeste

Stories The individual members of The Blues Band were already held in admiration by generations of rhythm & blues fans when they formed back in 1979. Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher... almost two and a half decades and over 16 albums later they continue to add to their growing army of followers. Today, the band is acknowledged throughout Europe and beyond as being amongst the very finest purveyors of rhythm & blues. These boys have a real feel for their music, for their audience and for each other. Playing with maturity and passion is second nature to all of them.

Working in deep-training principles to cultivate a highlysensitised and physical performer, Adeste are on a journey of discovery. You are invited to join them on their journey as they open their work beyond the confines of the training studio for the first time. Inspired by the novel Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, the dead speak to us from beyond the grave, sharing their individual stories, and in doing so, speak to us all.

Miles Jupp

Fibber in the Heat

After pulling a few strings and telling some little lies, an unprepared and unqualified Jupp heads to India with the English press to embark on a month long, sun-soaked disaster (and some minor triumphs). A sorry tale of how he attempted to become a cricket journalist by the unlikely, ill-thought out and dishonest method of pretending to be one. Miles Jupp is an award-winning stand-up and actor who recently appeared in the feature film Made in Dagenham and the BBC’s The Thick of It, Mock The Week, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, as well as appearing as a regular character in Rev.

Kieran Goss

Live and Solo

Long hailed as one of Ireland’s leading songwriters and performers, Kieran Goss’ music has won him fans across the globe. His songs have made him a star, but his live shows have made him a legend. Live on stage is where Kieran Goss really shines. This is a rare chance to see Kieran performing live and solo. “The sense of fun is tremendous, the playing first rate and the songs are sheer quality. The encores were genuine, but only because the man is too.” The Irish Times “Kieran Goss is one of the most gifted performers around today. ‘Goodbye Laura, goodbye! Don’t forget to write!’ When young Laura Timms sets out from the tiny village of Lark Rise to start a new life in the nearby market town of Candleford she finds herself torn between her love of the countryside and the lure of the town, the traditions of the past and the promise of the future. Ian D Montfort: Touching the Dead

followed by highlights of Ivan Brackenbury’s Hospital Radio Roadshow

Award-winning Tom Binns with his two hit comic creations. Ian D Montfort is The Sunderland Psychic who channels dead famous people. “You don’t need to be recently bereaved to have a great time this evening.” Celebrities who may make an appearance include Ernie Wise, Rod Hull, Tony Hart, Jeremy Beadle and William Shakespeare.

Following a successful and very popular appearance here with their Flanders and Swann show a few months ago, Gordon and David are delighted to be back with their new offering – The Humour of Noel Coward. Noel Coward wrote some very funny and witty songs. Those of you who saw Gordon last year will appreciate he doesn’t do romance. His face wouldn’t let this happen.

Join Jimmy White, Dennis Taylor, John Parrott, John Virgo, Cliff Thorburn and Michaela Tabb in an evening of snooker, laughter and nostalgia. This event is strictly one night only. A chance to meet three World champions, plus the people’s champion, Jimmy White, and the world’s leading referee, Michaela Tabb! Limited VIP packages are available; this includes a pre-event champagne reception with all the players prior to the matches, a premium seat at the event and a souvenir brochure.

Ivan Brackenbury is the lovable, simple and insensitive hospital radio DJ with a knack for playing exactly the most (in)appropriate song for his listeners’ ailments.

Though once he did try to sing a serious song and it got more laughs than the comic ones! Noel Coward is so under-rated, declares Gordon – he was a composer, writer, actor, director and artist – and gave so much to the British theatre that he was knighted and had a West End theatre named after him.

After his latest popular reading tour, Charles Dickens is arguably the most famous person in the Western world – and, at the age of 57, still seems as vigorous and charismatic as ever. Yet, beneath the surface, there lurks darker secrets; his notorious affair with the young actress, Ellen Ternan, his nightly habit of frequenting the most unsavoury areas of his beloved London and his failing health.

So, when he returns to his country home at Gads Hill to write his next murder mystery story, with only his haughty sister-in-law and a pretty Cockney maid as company, what happens next has to be seen to be believed. Described as a ‘brilliant, wickedly funny play’, this is a new production of Penny Dreadful, produced by Derby Theatre Arts and specially re-worked and directed by the author.

A failing producer and his accountant discover a way to make themselves more money from a flop than a successful show. They search for the worst play they can find, with the worst script, and employ the worst director. Unfortunately for them, the get-rich-quick scheme becomes complicated when the production is a rip-roaring success. A musical treat full of high energy choreography, slapstick comedy and polished performances for which DOC has a well-earned reputation.

Ed Stafford

Walking the Amazon

Following the Ashes win, there is an important match to play, but relationships get in the way of Roger’s ambition to play in the premier league. Meet Roger’s oh-so-efficient wife Miriam, Bob’s wife and ex-wife, Alex’s girlfriend’s hysterics and don’t miss Maggie cuddling her ‘Little Kevin’ or the fate of Dennis’ car. By arrangement with Samuel French.

Tickets available from Beryl Boustead 01332 343649 and then from the Derby LIVE box office from 16 May.

No-one had ever attempted it before and everyone said it couldn’t be done... On 9th August 2010, British explorer Ed Stafford became the first person to walk the length of the Amazon river in South America, from its source to the sea. His epic, dangerous and exhausting journey was over 4000 miles long and took him 860 days to complete. Walking the Amazon is Ed’s account of this incredible achievement. A fascinating account of one man’s astonishing expedition of endurance.

Mark Thomas

Extreme Rambling (Walking The Wall)

Winners of Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2011.

Following his sell-out nationwide show, The Manifesto, awardwinning comedian and activist, Mark Thomas returns with his brand new show. Never one to take the easy option, Mark decided to go rambling in the Middle East and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side.

Over the last nine years The Demon Barbers have gained major recognition for their original and imaginative approach to traditional music and song. They take mainly traditional ballads, strange tales of myth and magic and coil them, twist them, make them stranger, darker, becoming tales of Gothic danger; they don’t so much make folk rock as make traditional tales quiver and pulse with electricity.

This is the story of 300,000 settlers; a 750km wall; six arrests, one stoning; too much hummus and a simple question... Can you ever get away from it all with a good walk?

In The Demon Barber Roadshow they team up with some of England’s most exciting young traditional dancers to create a high-energy music and dance spectacular.

Pratt is back! Inspector Pratt’s record of crime detection at Bagshot House is not enviable. In his previous visit, the body count mounted disastrously as he looked on, helpless and hopeless! Now he is back and, as usual, chaos reigns supreme.

This sublime comedy from Ian Dickens Productions Ltd. follows the great success of the recent critically acclaimed productions of Peter Gordon’s Murdered to Death and P.G. Wodehouse’s Come On, Jeeves.

During the course of his latest investigations, Pratt meets the new owner of the house, Nancy Allwright, and soon he is embroiled in more mystery, aided and abetted by Miss Maple and Constable Thomkins. Upper-crust Ginny and Italian gigolo, Enzo, help with enquiries, but danger soon looms with an unexpected arrival and a frightening suggestion by Welsh busybody and clairvoyant, Blodwyn Morgan.

Following on from the critically acclaimed successful tour of Murdered to Death, Ian Dickens International present the exciting new tour Death by Fatal Murder starring EastEnders’ ‘Dirty Den’ Leslie Grantham, Richard Gibson (‘Allo, ‘Allo’s Herr Otto Flick), Michelle Hardwick (Lizzie Kennoway in The Royal) and popular Ian Dickens Productions actor David Callister with more star casting to be announced.

“This is the story of what a woman’s patience can endure and what a man’s resolution can achieve” Ian Dickens International present a new adaptation of this classic Victorian thriller which has never been out of print since its first publication in 1860. With an all-star-cast including Colin Baker (Dr Who), Peter Amory (Emmerdale), and established stage and television actors Neil Stacy, Glyn Grain and Richard Tate. Walter Hartright, a handsome art teacher, is accosted by The Woman in White on a London road at midnight where she pleads with him for his help to prevent her from being taken to an asylum. She disappears just as suddenly as she appears, but this first, unsettling encounter is the beginning of a long journey which takes Walter to the darkest continents of his heart. Love, suspense and danger all combine to create this a haunting mystery of mistaken identities and stolen fortunes, heroism, high drama and volatile passions. Wilkie Collins was a contemporary and friend of Charles Dickens but outsold him in London and New York in 1860 with his first ever detective novel, The Woman in White. Now adapted into a stage drama, this fast-paced story set in Victorian England promises to captivate and delight the modern audience.

Late one night, Sophie is snatched from her bed in the orphanage by the BFG, who takes her back to his cave in Giant Country. The BFG – Big Friendly Giant – is a dream-blowing giant who blows lovely golden dreams into the bedrooms of sleeping children. The two soon become the best of friends, feasting together on disgusterous stinking snozzcumbers, washed down with frobscottle and making whizzpoppers together.

Sophie and the BFG quickly make plans to save them, enlisting the help of the Queen of England, the Head of the Army and the Head of the Airforce in their battle against the other giants.

But catasterous disastrophe strikes. The other giants are not nearly so nice. Their favourite pastime is feasting each night on human beans, and have set their sights on their next meal – the chillders of England.

Dick Whittington and his Cat will be striding into Derby this Christmas for a pantomime adventure paved in gold, packed with comedy capers and polished off with all the winning ingredients Derby LIVE audiences have come to expect. Along side our handsome hero is a host of colourful characters waiting to entertain and enthral you all! Sarah the Cook will be dishing out huge helpings of comedy aided and abetted by the loveable Idle Jack, who will both join Dick, Tommy the Cat, the Captain and Mate on the good ship Saucy Sal as they set sail to discover unfound treasures. Shipwrecked in Morocco, Dick and Tommy the Cat will need to come to the rescue of the Sultan but with a dastardly King Rat ducking, diving and conniving, it will take all of Tommy’s prowess to rid the country of rats. Will Dick then make it back to London and become Lord Mayor? Will he find true love in the arms of Alice? Maybe with a little sprinkling of magic and sparkle from Fairy Bow Bells our pantomime adventure will have the happy ever after ending it deserves!
