Welcome to Derby Festé 2012

Derby Festé 2012 kicks off on Thursday 20 September with the premiere of QUAD’s Derby Soap Opera - one of the world’s largest mass participation film projects. This will be followed by another first for Derby as Luc Amoros lights up Cathedral Green with a choreographed show set against an illuminated backdrop. The performance ends with a striking piece of art and eye-catching, explosive entertainment to kick-start an extended weekend of family fun. Friday’s entertainment starts with Luc Amoros’s final performance of Page Blanche and ends with the Festé Jive Party on the Market Place. Professional dancers will mix in amongst the crowds - so you can really let yourself go, or just enjoy from the side lines. Saturday’s family fun sees the streets come alive with a fantastic selection of entertainers, including life sized Punch and Judy, Giant Seagulls, an interactive robot and a comedy show featuring one man and his six foot high balloon. On Saturday evening Darley Park hosts the fourth and final performance of Games Time - a free, dazzling outdoor dance spectacular set to a backdrop of large scale video projections, music and fireworks.

Derby Soap Opera: ROSAS, The Attic Assembly Rooms 19:00 (Doors open at 18:00, speeches at 18:30) Map Ref ROSAS: The Attic is the result of QUAD’s mass participation film project Derby Soap Opera involving over 15,000 Derby people directed by the international artist and Director of Photography Marinella Senatore. The people of Derby were invited to become the actors, singers and dancers, stage directors, costume designers, make-up artists and lighting technicians for Derby Soap Opera, created in QUAD between February and July 2012. The 40 minute film will tour as part of an international trilogy, screening in Berlin and Madrid after its premiere at Festé. The screening will take place in Derby Assembly Rooms, tickets are free (subject to availability), and available from QUAD Box Office.

Festé Jive Party: King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys Market Place 21:15 - 23:00 Map Ref Join in the party atmosphere with King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys, a jazz and swing institution who have been on the road for two decades playing across Europe, the USA and Russia. Their dazzling musicianship and riveting performances have firmly established them as the Kings of Swing. Also, keep an eye out for Ruzzit Buzzit and the Jumpin’ Jive Jitterbugs; who will be entertaining the crowds with their bouncing 40’s dance.

Prepare to be amazed as remarkable, international performance artists Luc Amoros bring their incredible live evening show Page Blanche to Derby Festé. Allow yourself to be caught up in this spellbinding event, as six daring painters, actors and musicians take to a huge scaffold canvas - using 300 kilos of paint and 360 square metres of plastic film to create, destroy and recreate a series of extraordinary works of art right before your eyes. This unique show fuses dramatic lighting, acrobatics, technology, live music and art to leave audiences feeling wowed. This is a ticketed event. Will ‘world famous’ film director Hyram Hiccinbottom succeed - or will it all come tumbling down as Hollywood meets ‘Ollinwood.’

Bruce Airhead Map Ref The metamorphosis of man and a six-foot balloon choreographed to music whilst wearing brightly coloured lycra shorts. 30 minutes of original comedy with an explosive finish.

Independent Theatre Network: Theatre on the Run! Map Ref Join five vibrant Derby theatre companies on St Peters Street for an entertaining stroll through the St Peter’s Quarter and Cathedral Quarter. Who knows who you’ll bump into; from Alien Tourists to Will Shakespeare!

Bread and Butter Theatre: Sports Day Map Ref 80’s PE Teachers Mr Stretch and Mr Armstrong are on a mission to get the nation fit using only their enthusiasm, a roving musical pommel horse and some PE kits rescued from the lost and found locker.

Ouch Entertainment: Yodel Map Ref Absurd comedy. Wolfgang Glochenspiel performs his world famous classical music on bicycle horns while riding on a two-metre high unicycle. Listen to the beautiful melodies played by his orchestra of Bell Ringers. Yodelay-e-hooooooooo!

Derby Makers: Yarn Bombing Map Ref Derby Makers (based at the Silk Mill Museum) and local knitters have Yarn Bombed Cathedral Green. Look out for colourful displays of knitted, crocheted yarn that have been inspired by the bright colours from Games Time. Silk Mill: The What If? Machine Map Ref ‘What if?’ you could see Derby’s first ever giant chain reaction machine? Come and watch us build something quite extraordinary.

Reckless Invention: Turbo Jonez & the Temple of Boom Map Ref Dressed head-to-toe in wet-look spandex, Turbo Jonez is on a quest to find the ultimate phat beat. Join him on a musical journey through the most dangerous and heinous tracks from the 90s, 80s, 70s, 60s, all the way back to Mozart! Safetycatch: Watch the Birdie! Map Ref An old-fashioned photographer from the silent movie era dresses volunteers for portraits in a paper moon. A mini darkroom magically develops prints & springs odd surprises... How will your portrait turn out?

Rampage Brass Band* Map Ref Reclaiming the street music of New Orleans, Rampage Brass Band enthral audiences with their youthful zest. Led by the effervescent Jeff Brown, this bunch of Derby-based musicians will enjoy themselves as much as you! Half Human Theatre: Albot the Robot Map Ref Albot was created in response to the Dickens bicentennial and inspired by HG Wells and Jules Verne. Albot is over two-metres tall, and with a unique transforming frame can change shape and stretch to over three-metres.

Red Herring Productions: That’s the way to do it! * Map Ref A life sized alternative of The Punch and Judy Show - returning as a vehicle for hilarious satire in our credit crunched world. Puppets, music and knockabout choreography abound as the infamous rebels take to the streets.

Musical Ruth Map Ref A mobile piano driven by Sister Ruth, a madcap nun who can stop and entertain with comedy patter, hilarious dance moves, facial contortions, sound effects and unique renditions of all your favourite songs. Circo Rum Ba Ba: Pirates Map Ref Two scurvy pirates in a boat plunder and loot as they sail into the audience. They are hale and hearty and always ready to give the landlubbers a taste of the salt water! Big Rory & Co: Giant Seagulls Map Ref These cheeky sea birds have had people in a flap all over the world. Giant cheeky gulls with working beaks, they’ll rummage in bags and pockets, steal food, squabble amongst themselves and generally cause a fuss.

Come and enjoy this spectacular large-scale event created by people from Derby working with leading UK artists. Over 100 local people of all ages and backgrounds have dedicated their spare time to bring you a breath-taking show of brilliant costume, dance, film, music and fireworks in Darley Park. Games Time is a performance that depicts four opposing teams taking part in an extraordinary, imaginary game of chance, played out on a huge games board by kings, queens and mythical beasts, supported by their loyal foot soldiers. With a backdrop of giant video projections and music, watch the teams submit to fate at each roll of the dice. Who will be victorious in the Games Time finale? Games Time is funded by Legacy Trust UK, and is produced by DĂŠda Producing. Games Time is an outdoor performance, please wear suitable footwear.
