How will the Summer Reading Challenge benefit my child? Reading for pleasure is one of the most important contributory factors in children’s learning success and their general well-being. As well as supporting them to become confident and enthusiastic readers, it also helps them develop good writing skills and a better understanding of the world around them. The Summer Reading Challenge draws children into their local libraries and inspires them to read for pleasure, by combining free access to a wide range of books and an opportunity to take part in fun creative activities. The Challenge is open to children at all levels of their reading development, allowing those with special education needs and disabilities to take part as well. It’s a great time to share and talk about books as a family, helping to kick start your child’s lifelong reading journey. Taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge The challenge is to read six library books during the summer holidays. Children can read any books they like – stories, fact books, picture books - it’s up to them. Audio books and eBooks also count. Everyone who joins gets a colourful fold-up collector folder and a character sticker for every book they read. When they complete the challenge, they’ll get a certificate and a colourful zip tag featuring artwork from Animal Agents, which can be attached to bags and pencil cases. There’s an extra reward for those who read a further four books. Children under four will have their own collector card and stickers with an Animal Agents door hanger as award for completing. Children must be members of the library to take part. Animal Agents events at your local library All sessions are free. To attend children must be signed up to the Animal Agents Summer Reading Challenge 2017. Children aged six and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult carer. Booking is essential for all events. Book from Saturday 15 July at your local library or online at derbycitylibraries.eventbrite. co.uk Just select your chosen event and venue.
