Welcome What do you fancy this spring? Come in from the cold and enjoy a cosy night in with Derby LIVE. Sit back, relax and let us entertain you... If you haven’t booked yet then make sure you get your hands on some tickets for at least one our three magical Christmas shows – The Wind in the Willows, Aladdin and Puss in Boots. Stuck for a Christmas present? Tickets make a great gift and we also sell gift vouchers that can be used at most theatres. Our spring homegrown theatre season kicks off with Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice – brutal economics, unfettered prejudice and fairytale romance, set against a backdrop of the 1920s London Stock Exchange. In March we’re very excited to bring you The Mountaintop (Winner of the 2010 Olivier Award for Best New Play), which transports you a Memphis hotel room and the last night of Martin Luther King. Some of the hottest tickets in spring have already sold out - but don’t worry here are some hand-picked substitutes. If you wanted to see Jason Derulo, try Reality TV’s Ultimate Pop Group, Gleemania. Sarah Millican has sold every seat, so why not come along to see rising comedy star Andi Osho? By the time you read this, John Bishop’s two dates will undoubtedly be full, so why not see Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow guests Sean Collins & Mike Gunn.
It goes without saying that there is an incredible amount of first rate comedy across all of our venues, but there is so much more too. If you like your music loud and local, come along to one of our Evolution gigs – great value for money and a chance to support acts from the Derby area. The folk/world music ‘supergroup’ that is The Imagined Village are here in February a real highlight for fans of any musical style. For a great night (or afternoon) out, The Chinese State Circus will take your breath away as they transport you to a land of legends and Shaolin Warriors in Mulan! Moscow City Ballet will also be in town with The Nutcracker & Sleeping Beauty. Bringing dance bang up to date, the “remarkable” (Daily Mail) Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company’s 7734 makes a great introduction to modern dance, mixing visceral choreography, video, text and music. In April, we’ve tempted the Agatha Christie Theatre Company back to Derby Theatre with Verdict, or over in the Assembly Rooms the same week it’s a hard knock life for little orphan Annie! Whatever you see this spring, we hope you enjoy it. If you have any feedback, good or bad, we love to hear from you – email us at derbylive@derby.gov.uk Ed Green Marketing & Communications Manager Bob Rushton Programme Manager

Enter a land of enchanted forests, glorious meadows and magnificent castles in this new adaptation of Charles Perrault’s Puss in Boots. The Miller’s son is miserable: his father has died and whilst his brothers have inherited the mill, all he’s been left is a ‘stinking cat’. However, our perfectly preened Puss refuses to be downhearted and quickly sets the wheels of her enterprising plan into motion.
With a teensy bit of luck and a whole lot of pluck (plus a little help from her good friends, the audience), Puss soon proves her worth by befriending the King, corralling a castle and seeing off an ogre – all in a day’s work! This life-affirming tale filled with music and fun, is sure to delight and engage even the very youngest of audience members as well as anyone who’s ever dreamt of their own happily ever after, reminding us all that - with the right attitude and some truly fabulous footwear – anything’s possible! Mitch Winehouse’s (yes, Amy’s Dad) live gigs show a depth of musical knowledge and impeccable taste, stemming from his young days in the East End of London, when his father owned a barber shop and all he remembers about that time is the music. Mitch’s debut album Rush of Love is jazz, swing, crooning if you like - the Winehouse musical DNA. The music comes from a perfectly natural place, revealing the roots of his own, as well as his daughter’s, musical inspiration. Alongside classic jazz standards including Please Be Kind, How Insensitive and You Go To My Head, he joins artists from Elton John to Matt Monro, performing songs written especially by Tony Hiller.

They Should Get Out More
Punt & Dennis return to the live arena after four years and have a go at politics, then squeeze new material out of the Olympics, the BBC and plumbers. Hugh Dennis (BBC’s Outnumbered and Mock the Week) does ridiculous mimes, great impressions and generally spends his time undermining his little chum. It is very funny. And very clever. Maybe we shouldn’t mention that they sing The Wheels On The Bus and that Hugh spends an inordinate amount of time as a velociraptor, because that doesn’t sound clever, does it?

Louise Jameson
Louise Jameson (probably best known as Rosa di Marco in Eastenders) plays 12 different characters and tells us what has brought her to this critical point in her life. Should she go under the knife to enhance her looks, or... to hell with it, on a date with her toy boy? Louise plays Joanne Taylor a former TV diva who is on the verge of her 55th birthday, seriously single, ‘hot-flushing’ and about to make some drastic changes in her life. An acerbic, topical comedy about society’s obsession with youth, beauty and transformation.

Call Mr Robeson:
A life, with songs Written and Performed by Tayo Aluko
Present Company
Paul Robeson is a great actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When he gets too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, is harassed and denied opportunities to perform or travel.
In Lerner & Loewe's musical version of Shaw's Pygmalion every song is a show-stoppper: The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night, On The Street Where You Live, With a Little Bit of Luck...
This rollercoaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable life highlights how his activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some famous songs and speeches, and a defiant testimony to the Senate House Un-American Activities Committee.
From a cockney knees-up in Covent Garden to the glitter of the Embassy ballroom - not to mention that unfortunate incident at Ascot, this glorious tale of a flower girl groomed to enter society to win a bet, is an absolute classic. Why not banish winter blues and come to enjoy Eliza Doolittle, Professor Higgins, Colonel Pickering, Freddie, Dustman Doolittle, and the rest in one of the most popular musicals of all time.
University of Derby & Uncontained Arts
Afrique Classique
An evening of song with South African born tenor Dana de Waal whose startlingly agile voice and breathtaking vocal control have thrilled audiences internationally. With a career spanning over thirty years, audiences around the world have been thrilled by his vocal mastery that goes hand in hand with an emotional high ride that is at once exhausting, mesmerising and yet, leaves one wanting for more!
There will be a Q&A session after the show.
Present Company is directed and choreographed by Jean Gemmell. Musical Director and orchestra conductor Morris Fisher.
Deemed as the Pavarotti of South Africa, Dana’s repertoire is a versatile blend of classical, African, folk, theatre and contemporary music along with his own compositions, which will leave you thinking that you have never heard it “quite like that” before!

It is 1928 – just prior to the Wall Street Crash and the rise of the Third Reich. Money may not be able to buy you happiness, but it can certainly buy just about everything else. Thus, the price is right for Shylock the Jew in insisting on his pound of flesh when the merchant Antonio’s investments literally go adrift. And the beautiful Portia is the star prize for any entrepreneurial gambler who guesses correctly when ‘opening the box’.
Once again, Derby LIVE will be staging a challenging and morally-complex play in a way which makes it meaningful and relevant to today’s audiences. This production will explore how the most privileged in society often treat those at the margins. The clash of brutal economics, unfettered prejudice and fairytale romance promises to make Derby LIVE’s production of The Merchant of Venice one of the theatrical highlights of the year.
Following the success of Derby LIVE’s production of Much Ado About Nothing in 2009, we are thrilled to be producing another of Shakespeare’s most gripping plays – The Merchant of Venice.

Eyes Front with Isla St Clair
Zoe Lyons Clownbusting
Many years ago whilst up a hill with the Kate Bush Fan Club, eating magic fudge, Zoe stumbled upon the secret of inner peace. Just live life and be happy. But that’s much easier said than done when you’re the sort of person who could commit mass insect homicide in a butterfly house, becomes violent when confronted with souvenir thimbles and lies awake at night worrying that if you ever went to prison you wouldn’t use the time wisely and would only be a disappointment to yourself.
Put together in 2010 as part of the Derbyshire Literature Festival, the Mills and Chimneys project brought together a group of musicians from all ages and backgrounds, writing and performing songs inspired by the Derbyshire landscape and its many traditions. The project has seen sell out concerts and wide spread critical acclaim throughout the county.
A delightful combination of music, film and nostalgia about the effect of music in wartime. Singer and broadcaster, Isla St Clair, performs a selection of songs ranging from Napoleonic times through to the popular hits that were born out of two world wars. Isla is known to millions for her numerous television appearances including The Royal Variety Show, Morecambe and Wise Show and co-host of the BBC’s Generation Game. Joining Isla is film maker Patrick King, who gives a fascinating and humorous “behind-the-scenes” look at the making of their awardwinning documentary. Using film clips they illustrate how songs and music played an important part in people’s daily lives: for boosting morale, propaganda or just reminding people of better times.
Zoe has come to realise that life is too short, particularly if you are a butterfly in the wrong place at the wrong time and is going to try to be happy... although the word ‘try’ sounds like there’s effort involved and she is not particularly pleased about that.
For this special concert, the musicians - David Gibb, Lucy Ward, Julian Butt, Sarah Matthews, Elly Lucas and Mike Smith - will be joined by fellow band members from their other projects – Cupola and David Gibb and The Pony Club - in a fantastic evening of great music and stories.

In this epic new dance theatre production, Vardimon’s visceral choreography dramatically combines with text, music and awe-inspiring performances by a nine-strong company of international performers. “Beautiful. A deft theatrical touch” The Observer “Dangerous and beautiful. Impassioned and remarkable” Daily Mail

‘No False Moustaches’ from the ultimate tribute to one of the greatest bands on the planet Queen. If you are a fan of Queen who enjoys the pantomime of having the band dressing up as your heroes to the potential detriment of the music then this show is not for you. However, if you want to see the nationally acclaimed GA GA, publicly acknowledged by Brian May, performing live with the sound and visuals that made Queen such a live phenomenon then this show is definitely for you.
An Evening with Charlie Landsborough
Much-loved singer/songwriter, Charlie Landsborough and his five-piece band are well known for keeping concert-goers enthralled. His engaging anecdotes captivate audiences wherever he performs - he is as entertaining as he is melodic with a good dose of humour thrown in. Charlie recently released his autobiography, Storyteller, which details growing up in Birkenhead to his time in the army, his Christianity, the many years of teaching and, in his 50s, the taste of musical success. Steeleye Span
Steeleye Span changed the face of folk music forever, taking it from small clubs into the world of gold discs and international tours.
How much could ‘Ludo’ the dog on my poster have in common with his namesake ‘Ludwig van B’!? As much as my storytelling could compare with King Billy C’s, however this reality didn’t prevent the Edinburgh Evening News from claiming that I spin a yarn like a younger version of the Monarch himself!
John Bishop Sunshine
Choosing between talking down the compliment’s obvious hyperbole with humility as a gentleman would, or flogging it relentlessly as a desperate egotist with a black hole for a soul would, I’ve chosen the latter and much lower path. Come to my show, or I’ll hurt the dog!
Following sold out shows in Autumn 2010, the multi awardwinning comedian and star of Live At The Apollo, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Skins, Mock The Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats, returns to Derby to perform his brand new show, Sunshine.

Lady Constance Chatterley is trapped in a loveless marriage. Injured in battle, her husband Clifford is unable to satisfy her sexual desires and so Constance finds herself in the arms of another.
Written in 1925, D.H. Lawrence’s controversial work was banned from sale until 1960 for its frank and explicit depiction of sex and its portrayal of a passionate and adulterous love affair.
But Lady Chatterley’s man is a bit of rough! Mellors her paramour is her husband’s gamekeeper. As their passionate love affair reaches its climax, the constraints of Constance’s class-led society are broken down as the two lovers find fulfilment with each other.
Years ahead of its time this work deals with sexual taboos that are still present in society even today. Contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.

Alice
An ordinary woman in extraordinary times by Gilbert & Sullivan
“Sometimes ordinary people can do extraordinary things.” In 1917 Derby born Alice Wheeldon, socialist, suffragette and conscientious objector, was accused of plotting to murder the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. Held in Derby’s Guildhall prison cells, “that Wheeldon woman” went on to be tried at the Old Bailey whilst the world’s press watched. With striking resonances to the contemporary political landscape, Alice’s story of activism in a country at war, paranoid against a fearful sinister foe, sounds eerily familiar. Find out what happens when an ordinary person dares to stand her ground and how the establishment can wreak a terrible retribution.
This country’s premier Rock & Roll legend Joe Brown comes to us after another remarkable year even by his own high standards. Gilbert & Sullivan's first great success remains one of their most popular comic operas. The First Lord of the Admiralty, who has never been to sea, wants to marry the Captain of the Pinafore's daughter, but she plans to elope with a common sailor on board her father's ship!
Joe is truly is one of this country’s best-loved, enduring and most acclaimed musicians and he’s back at the Assembly Rooms by popular demand in another twohour musical celebration.
www.rosehill.org.uk
You may have seen Joe touring the major arenas with Status Quo in 2010, performing on Later With Jools Holland or have been there to witness him playing his critically acclaimed set at Glastonbury Festival, but if not now is your chance to see one of the all time great talents live.

about the application of tuna paste with optional mayonnaise to the body - get frisky with Derby LIVE Community Theatre, as they embark on their third year, and no doubt their most rip-roaring and risqué endeavour to date. A show filled to the brim with innuendo...
But who will surrender first? Will peace (and love) break out? To find out this - and to learn more
Contains strong language and scenes of a sexual nature.

Bill Kenwright presents
“The greatest musical of the decade” International Herald Tribune
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.
Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers, and Bill Kenwright’s production, having recently celebrated its 21st phenomenal year in London, continues to enjoy standing ovations at every devastating performance. No wonder Blood Brothers is now ‘The musical for all time’.
“Devastating. A masterpiece. If you haven’t seen it go, if you have, go again.” News of the World
