Joseph Wright Gallery. Visitor viewing Rocks with Waterfall, c.1772, by Joseph Wright of Derby, (1734–1797).
CONTENTS
HELLO This Spring we’ll be exploring a number of themes which reflect Derby’s place in the world. At the beginning of March we’ll be participating in a nationwide programme of events to coincide with the BBC’s new landmark series Civilisations. Last year historian David Olusoga was filmed for the programme, in the Joseph Wright Gallery, speaking about the painting The Indian Widow. He used it to explain how Britons in the 18th century viewed the native people of America reflecting on wider perceptions of ‘Civilisation’ at the time. From May visitors to our new World Cultures gallery will be able to contribute to the interpretation of the museums’ collection of material from around the globe. For the last year we’ve been working with people from across the diverse communities of the city to select objects from Africa, Asia, North and South America and the Pacific islands, describing a common human condition. These objects will be installed in the gallery awaiting responses from our visitors. Our major exhibition this Spring is The Art of Industry: From Joseph Wright to the 21st century. Trading and manufacturing is at the heart of the Derby Story and the exhibition features artwork which reflects the human, environmental and aesthetic impact of industrial society. We are especially thrilled to be showing Joseph Wright’s An Iron Forge which will be on loan from the Tate. This will be the first time this important painting has been shown in Derby. Throughout the season we’ll also be running a series of activities which ask the public to help us write The Derby Story. We want to know is means to be a ‘Derbian’ and what it feels like to live and work in the city. As our programmes show, whilst museums are adept at showing where we’ve come from, they are more useful when they suggest where we might go!

EXCLUSIVE:
EXHIBITION The Art of Industry: From Joseph Wright to the 21st Century 24 March - 17 June Museum & Art Gallery Admission: Give What You Think Exploring the interwoven histories of art and industry, this exhibition examines both the way that artists view industry and conversely the way that industry portrays itself. The exhibition charts the change in the artists’ viewpoint from depicting industrial buildings set in sublime landscapes to representing the ‘dark satanic mills’ and technological power houses reaping havoc on the natural world. Over the last 300 years since the birth of the Industrial Revolution artists have been fascinated by industry and people who work in it. Joseph Wright’s An Iron Forge painted in 1772 and in the Tate collection, returns to Derby for the first time since the 18th century. Other artists whose work are exhibited in the exhibition include Ford Madox Brown, L. S. Lowry, Graham Sutherland and Sir Edwardo Paolozzi.

We are asking the public to help Derby Museums write The Derby Story. We hope to create a narrative which reflects the city’s past as a meeting point, a trading centre and a city of industry. We also want to understand more about the city today; what makes it unique? what are the hope and fears of its citizens? and how can everyone in Derby shape its future fairly? Join us in a series of gatherings or contribute via our website, as together we shape The Derby Story.

THE DERBY MUSEUMS ENDOWMENT Help us to secure our heritage for future generations Derby Museums has been awarded a Heritage Endowment Grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Over the next four years Derby Museums aims to raise £1 million that will be matched pound for pound by the Heritage Lottery Fund. This will create a £2 million Endowment Fund that will be permanently invested to provide an income to help to support Derby Museums’ long term future. You can make a donation to our Endowment Fund at any time in our special box at the Museum and Art Gallery. Every £1 donated will be doubled by the Heritage Lottery Fund. If you would like to talk to us about making a larger donation please contact Jennifer on 01332 641901 or email jennifer@derbymuseums.org. Derby Museums would like to thank all the National Lottery players. Their contribution to Derby Museums and the Endowment is gratefully acknowledged.

THE SILK MILL Derby Silk Mill is midway through a five year £16.4m programme to create the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Derby City Council, Arts Council England and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership. The Silk Mill is now closed to the public for events, activities and venue hire. During 2018 the building will undergo a full redevelopment and is scheduled to reopen fully in 2020, bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year. The Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history, inspired by the makers of the past, made by the makers of today and will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities.
