I am so pleased to be penning this welcome as Derby Museums emerges from the latest Covid restrictions. From summer 2021, for the first time in a decade, Derby Museums will be fully operating three museums: Derby Museum and Art Gallery, home to the world famous Joseph Wright collections, the newly opened Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill and the much loved Pickford’s House. Visitors can explore stories of the world, the city and the home. Alongside the familiar permanent displays there are special exhibitions in each museum. At Pickford’s House we chart the thoughts of Florence Nightingale about Health in the Home. At the Museum and Art Gallery, an enchanting exhibition of work from children’s author John Yeoman and renowned illustrator Quentin Blake, 50 Years of Children’s Books, runs until the beginning of October. At the Museum of Making, the Scale exhibition brings together art, science, the natural world, modelling and making, and challenges visitors to look anew at the concept of scale and perspective in the manufacturing process. There are many events and activities throughout the season, which encourage families to get hands-on with culture. At the beginning of October half term, we will present Assemble: Derby’s Festival of Making at the Museum of Making, a new version of the hugely popular Maker Faires held several years in a row. Artists, scientists, craftspeople and hackers will assemble to inspire and entertain the makers of today and the future. And, in the run-up to Christmas, don’t forget our annual festive celebration at Pickford’s House as well as Let’s MAKE Christmas where we will feature a swathe of local makers in our shops. Our museums are the perfect place to buy that unique and special gift.

Used in production and prototyping, in mapping and to convey perspective, scale is critical to the making process and a powerful tool in communicating ideas. This first exhibition to open in the Museum of Making explores scale as a theme on the site widely regarded as the world’s first modern factory where, in 1721, Derby Silk Mill was processing raw silk on a scale never before seen, using the River Derwent to power machines worked by hundreds of people. Surprising and perception-shifting, the exhibition explores the scale and impact of this site’s legacy, presenting the work of artists alongside intriguing objects from Derby Museums’ collection.

ACCESS We want everyone to be able to enjoy our exhibitions and events, and we have taken every measure to ensure that we are as open and accessible to as many people as possible. Families are always welcome. The Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Making are both fully wheelchair-accessible and assistance may be provided if required. Both museums also have accessible public toilets, with a Changing Places toilet available on the ground floor of the Museum of Making.

14

Given the limiting nature of the historic building at Pickford’s House, wheelchair access is unfortunately only available on the ground floor, lower ground floor and garden. We regret that, for the same reason, there is also no accessible toilet at Pickford’s House for disabled visitors. For full access details, visit derbymuseums.org/accessibility or call 01332 641901.

For the Museum of Making, follow the brown signs in the city and county for Derby Silk Mill. Offsite parking is available nearby at the Assembly Rooms, Bold Lane and Chapel Street carparks and parking cards can be validated at the Museum of Making for a discounted rate of £2.50 per day. There are four accessible parking bays on Silk Mill Lane for Blue Badge holders only. The Museum and Art Gallery has no parking facilities but there are plenty of carparks and spaces for Blue Badge holders nearby. Pickford’s House has its own free car park, which can be accessed from Agard Street.

Our three museum sites are located around ten minutes’ walk from Derby Bus Station and are served by frequent and regular bus services into Derby city centre, operated by Trent Barton and Arriva. Pickford’s House is on routes 5, 8 and 9 and many bus routes pass close to both the Museum and Art Gallery and the Museum of Making.

BY RAIL Derby Railway Station is 1.2 miles away, approximately a 20-minute walk. With a direct train from London to Derby, you can be at any of our museums in less than two hours!
