What’s On March - June 2020 derbymuseums.org
HELLO The new decade will be a watershed for Derby Museums. Next September we will open the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, celebrating 300 years of making in our city. The museum has been made by local people with over 1,500 community volunteers contributing 25,000 hours to inspire a new generation of makers. In the run-up, there will be plenty to see and do in Derby's other museums. We are celebrating 200 years since the birth of Florence Nightingale and her connections with Derbyshire with an exhibition at Pickford's House that explores Florence’s theories for managing health in the home. Our summer exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery will feature works from renowned illustrator Quentin Blake and author John Yeoman. Blake's work is familiar to all generations, accompanying Roald Dahl's greatest books for children and David Walliams' modern classics. In the summertime, visitors to Derby should look out for the Derby Ram Trail; a free arts trail around the city centre with 30 colourful ram sculptures to explore, each sponsored by a local business. Funds raised through the event will contribute to Derby Museums’ Endowment, helping to secure the city's cultural heritage for the future.

EXHIBITIONS The Jacobean House: The Highs and Lows of a Derby Townhouse
Quentin Blake and John Yeoman: 50 Years of Children's Books Friday 22 May - Sunday 30 August Museum & Art Gallery FREE - Give What You Think
Tuesday 10 March - Saturday 15 August Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think The Jacobean House was a house of firsts: the first brick building in Derby and the first place to have seen tea consumed in the town. However, it’s a miracle survivor because of the two times it was nearly destroyed and its periods of abandonment. This exhibition hopes to create discussion about the price of the demolition of historical buildings in the name of future progress.

Quentin Blake has had a number of extended collaborations with writers, but the longest of all has been with John Yeoman. House of Illustration’s 50 Years of Children’s Books exhibition is the first to celebrate this partnership, featuring more than 40 works, including illustrations and books by the two.
Florence Nightingale: Health in the Home Wednesday 18 March - Spring 2021 Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth through an exploration of her impact upon health in the home. Join in a conversation about how we care for ourselves and those we live with, and how we discover and communicate health information. Share the weird and wonderful health advice you have been given throughout your life! Pickford’s House has accessibility restrictions to its upper floors. If you have special access requirements, please contact us before visiting: 01332 641901 or email info@derbymuseums.org.

Their first book was A Drink of Water in 1960, which launched Quentin Blake’s career in children’s book illustration. The original drawings for this, and 11 other books by the pair, feature in the exhibition. Since then they have worked together on nearly 50 projects. The latest, All The Year Round, was launched by Andersen Press in October 2017 to coincide with the exhibition at House of Illustration, and A Drink of Water was republished by Thames and Hudson in September 2017. Quentin Blake and John Yeoman: 50 Years of Children’s Books is a touring exhibition from House of Illustration, curated by Quentin Blake. www.houseofillustration.org.uk

Ceramics Taster Workshop Patricia Fara on Erasmus Darwin: Sex, Science, and Serendipity Saturday 30 May, 10.30-11.30am Museum & Art Gallery £8 per ticket, available from 8th April at: derbybookfestival.co.uk Dr Erasmus Darwin seemed an innocuous Midlands physician and stalwart of 18th Century society, but there was another side to him. Botanist, physician, Lunar inventor and popular poet,Darwin was internationally renowned for extraordinary poems about sex and science, yet his character was savaged by London's satirists. Intrigued, historian Patricia Fara set out to investigate why. www.derbybookfestival.co.uk Suitable for young people and adults.

Richard Mayson: Lowry’s Lamps Monday 1 June, 6.30-7.30pm Museum & Art Gallery £8 per ticket, available from 8th April at: derbybookfestival.co.uk When we think of the paintings of LS Lowry RBA RA, it’s the people and their industrial setting that come to mind. But the detail of his paintings reveals far more and he used street furniture to brilliant effect: lamp-posts, telegraph poles, flag poles, fences all form an important part of Lowry’s busy industrial scenes. Richard Mayson comes from Lowry’s home-village of Mottramin-Longdendale and has a life-long passion for street lamps and street furniture.

Who was the real Wallis Simpson: an opportunistic American social climber, a master manipulator or the true love of Edward’s life? Anna Pasternak’s new book is the first ever to give Wallis a voice to show that she was a warm, loyal, intelligent woman, adored by her friends, written off by cunning, influential Establishment men seeking to diminish her and destroy her reputation. Far from being the villain of the abdication, she was the victim.
In October 1726, newspapers began reporting a remarkable event: in Godalming, Surrey a woman called Mary Toft had started to give birth to rabbits. By December that year, after having been examined by doctors, she had been accused of fraud and taken into custody. Karen Harvey has based her book on extensive new archival research. The case of Mary Toft exposes huge social and cultural changes allowing us to reflect critically on our own ideas about pregnancy, reproduction, and the body through the lens of the past.
