Hello and welcome to your whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on guide. The Silk Mill, Pickfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s House & The Museum and Art Gallery.

Derby Museums are near the end of our first year as an independent charitable trust. Much has changed behind the scenes to make us function more efficiently and we are now ready to face the challenges ahead. We have started to improve the range and quantity of our offer for visitors. In the next 3 months there are more opportunities to meet the museum staff, to share knowledge and enter into conversation.

The Enlightenment exhibition has just opened shedding light on the Derbyshire that Joseph Wright of Derby knew, a time that changed the modern world. Much of the programme this summer is around that subject and the Summer of Wildlife and we very much hope that you are able to join us for some of it. We are spending more time communicating digitally so look out for us on Twitter and Facebook. We value your feedback and support so please take the time to tell us what you think of the museums and the programme of activities that we offer, either online or on one of our comments cards in one of the museums.

New at Derby Museums Gallery Talks and Objects in Focus Saturday at 11am and on Sundays at 11am and 2pm From the beginning of July If you are visiting the Museum and Art Gallery at the weekend, you might like to drop into one of our regular gallery talks or object in focus sessions. Your chance to get up close to special objects in the museum. On both days at weekends you can meet one of our team, who will share their knowledge about a gallery or special object. Just ask at the front desk on arrival or check on our website before your visit for details of the subjects each week.

Enlightenment: Ideas that Changed the World 22 June - 25 August Museum and Art Gallery

“Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see. Be curious.” So said Stephen Hawking at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics last year.

This exhibition brings together objects collected over the past three years through the HLF Collecting Cultures project, in partnership with Buxton Museum and Art Gallery and Strutt’s North Mill, Belper. In the spirit of Hawking, it celebrates and explores the extraordinary period known as ‘The Age of Reason’ or ‘Enlightenment’ in the eighteenth century, a time of curiosity and discovery across many continents and subjects.

Objects as diverse as a salt cellar, a patch box, ceramics, a telescope, minerals, paintings and a cribbage set are woven together to illustrate and explain this vast and fascinating subject showing how Derbyshire and it’s people played an important role in creating the modern world.

Contemporary artist Jane Pepper’s assemblages, based on the Museum’s herbarium collection, are concealed within drawers among the natural history collection. Her digital artworks depicting cotton, madder, foxglove and thistle have been produced as large-scale prints and are featured in our interactive zone. Visitors will be encouraged to leave their comments and thoughts about this exhibition.

Exhibitions

The Exhibitions Beyond One Step: Edition 9 Eleven participating artists 18 May - 11 August Museum and Art Gallery

Bursting out of the gallery and spilling out into other parts of the museum, two of our galleries have been saturated with the work of eleven participating artists; Elisavet Andreou, Paul Holding, Sally French, Carol Harries Wood, Stephen Elvidge, Lauren O’Grady, Weixi Lin, Virginie Weiss, Jackie Macrae, Vasiliki Fragkou and Bruce Asbestos. Beyond One Step acts as a platform for artists emerging from four of the region’s MA Fine Art courses and demonstrates our commitment to supporting work by emerging artists.

This year’s artists have approached themes that are wide and varied and the exhibition showcases the innovation that infuses their creative practice. The group exhibition includes fragile sculptures, assemblages created from borrowed objects, delicate drawings, photography and installation, a diverse mix of process and media designed to visually surprise and ignite a desire to discover more about the artwork and artists.

Social Media Takeaway Presented by Bruce Asbestos HD 18 May - 11 August Museum and Art Gallery Sitting ‘parasitically’ within the Beyond One Step exhibition, we have worked with artist Bruce Asbestos to transform Gallery Three into a television recording studio.

Visit Bruce’s website and follow him on Facebook to contribute to these unique mini films. www.bruceasbestos.info

Bruce creates short performances and online films, often sliding intrusively into other projects and events. Social Media Takeaway will be live every Tuesday when an episode will be created and filmed in the gallery. The studio will then lay dormant, but for the props and evidence of the event for you to view. The resulting film will be screened simultaneously online and in the gallery space.

The Spirit is a Bone : Works from the Study of Dr Erasmus Paul Evans with poems by Dr Chris Jones Until Sept 2014 Museum and Art Gallery The Spirit is a Bone is a creative intervention within our Visual Poetry of 1001 Objects gallery. Continuing with our aim to inspire curiosity, a bespoke desk-bureau with a number of drawers has been nestled within the space. Within the recesses and drawers you will find a series of peculiar drawings based on the various natural history specimens that are displayed within the Fragments of Bone display.

Connected with the drawings are a series of Chris Jones beautiful, cryptic poetic epigrams, some based on the ancient Anglo-Saxon tradition of riddle poems – poems wherein the object speaks. Why not leave your own interaction in one of the drawers? I am your letter tomb, a shard of tome to trace this language written on the bone. The Horn Book, Chris Jones

Bartholomew Beal Saint Mondays and thereby hangs a tale 7 September - 10 November Museum and Art Gallery New work by Bartholomew Beal for the Jonathan Vickers Art Award Bartholomew Beal, an emerging star of the arts world, is the current holder of the biennial Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award. He has translated stories and memories into atmospheric paintings with an ambiguous narrative of their own. His work is intense and ethereal, articulating the balance between the transient nature of people’s lives and the longevity of their story. Beal describes the characters he paints as ‘quiet figures within an under-described space’ and concedes that his pictures develop as much from ‘trial, error and accident as they do from painterly proficiency’. This work is the product of a year spent absorbing the stories and traditions connected with the Industrial history of the Amber Valley. Beal’s research uncovered many colourful stories such as the ‘Nailors of Belper’ whose jobs were made redundant by industrialisation. They were heavy drinkers and a notoriously unruly bunch who set aside ‘Saint Mondays’ to recover from the weekends’ excesses. Some of the work will be for sale.

The Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award – Derbyshire Community Foundation established the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award in 1998 with the help of a legacy from the estate of the late Jonathan Vickers, a lifelong lover of fine arts. The Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award, first awarded in 2001, aims to develop a collection of work by rising artists which will be nationally important and will enrich the cultural life of Derbyshire. The Award brings a rising artist to Derbyshire to produce a body of new work inspired by the county’s landscape, heritage and people.

Bartholomew Beal talks about his paintings, Thursday 12 September, 1pm - 2pm, Derby Museum & Art Gallery. Enjoy a guided walk afterwards with artist Alison Lloyd, 2 - 4 pm, a circular route departing from the Museum & Art Gallery inspired by the places and stories in the exhibition. Drawn by Line and Shade Portraits by Young People in Derbyshire 7 September - 10 November Through the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award 2013, young people in Derbyshire worked with Bartholomew Beal and Derby Museums to create their own portraits. Taking inspiration from this young, contemporary artist and our Joseph Wright collection, young people have produced work in their own, individual style. We would like to thank the students and staff from the following schools for their participation in the project:-

Holy Ground Paintings and prints from Derby Museums’ Alfred Goodey Collection 1 July - 31 August Sir Richard Morris Lounge at Derby Cathedral Centre, Iron Gate, Derby Exhibition opening times: Monday to Saturday, 9am – 5pm (closed on Bank Holiday)

‘Holy Ground’ is a rare chance to see some of the unique collection of historic paintings and prints of Derby donated by their collector, Alfred Goodey to Derby Museums in the last century. This exhibition, in the Sir Richard Morris Lounge at Derby Cathedral Centre throughout July and August, concentrates on Derby’s churches and chapels as seen by artists in the mid 19th Century. Along with data from the 1851 Census of Religious Worship (the only one ever conducted) they give us a fascinating glimpse of church and chapel going in Victorian Derby.

Derbyshire Scriptwriters’ core activity is to provide critique and feedback of members’ scripts for all dramatic media - screen, stage and radio. Membership costs are £2 per month. However, we are always open to guests if people wish to try us out first before formally joining.

This small friendly creative writing group meets once a month to improve their craft through practice, discussion and critique. Members write poetry, short stories and articles, enter competitions and produce an anthology each year to raise funds. Derwent Writers belong to the National Association of Writing Groups and attend their annual conference.
