CONTENTS
HELLO In just over a year we’ll be opening the UK’s first Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill. This summer we hope our visitors will be experiencing the spirit of creative construction at the LEGO® Brick History exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery. Come the autumn, as the nights draw in, an altogether more spectral experience is in store with an exhibition of prints of Japanese Ghosts and Demons from the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. This coincides with the Japan-UK Season of Culture (from the Rugby World Cup in September 2019 to the Olympics/Paralympics in summer 2020). We’ll be exhibiting our own collection of studies of nature by renowned Japanese artists Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige. We have also unveiled new interpretation of the paintings of Joseph Wright of Derby, created by our Young Co-producers Network; a group of creative and thoughtful young people. They were fascinated not only by Wright’s artistic influences but also his family life and especially his struggle with depression and anxiety. The additional insights will help visitors understand more about Joseph Wright as a man as well as an artist. The social highlight of Derby Museums’ calendar takes place in October – our annual Fundraising Ball. This year the theme is ‘curiosity’ and we hope that party goers and donors will feel suitably intrigued to dig deep and support the Museums. As money raised at the Fundraising Ball will be channelled towards Derby Museums’ Endowment, donations will be matched pound for pound by the National Lottery Heritage Fund – ‘double’ the reason to give to your local museum.

THE MUSEUM OF MAKING Derby Silk Mill is midway through a five year £17m programme to create the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Derby City Council, Arts Council England and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership. The Silk Mill is now closed to the public for events, activities and venue hire. The building will undergo a full re-development during 2019 and open as the new Museum of Making in 2020, bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year. It will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history, inspired by the makers of the past, made by the makers of today, and designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational learning programmes and activities.

EXHIBITIONS Looks Sew Good: Magazines and Dressmaking Patterns from the 1930s Until Saturday 7 September Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think The 1930s was an era when Hollywood started to take over from the couturiers and high glamour was in. To acquire such a wardrobe, however, was well out of the reach of most, creating a gap in the market that was filled by home dressmaking. Ladies’ journals inspired women to deploy their sewing skills to emulate the styles they saw at the cinema and on showreels of society events. This exhibition looks at some of the magazines and patterns from the Pickford’s House collection that encouraged women to transform what they saw into reality.
Fashion House Until January 2020 Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think A rare glimpse inside the private wardrobe of Grace Elvina, Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston. This is a wonderful opportunity to indulge in sumptuous, elegant evening wear from the Jazz Age. Featuring spectacular 1920s and 30s couture gowns from the fashion houses of Chanel, Worth, Hartnell and Vionnet, this represents the epitome of style from the golden age of glamour.

EXHIBITIONS Japanese Ghosts and Demons: Woodblock Prints from the Ashmolean Museum Friday 20 September – Sunday 26 January 2020 Museum & Art Gallery FREE - Give What You Think Giant spiders, dancing skeletons, winged goblins and hordes of ghostly warriors are among the subjects depicted in this display of striking 19th Century woodblock prints, drawn from the Ashmolean Museum’s rich collection of Japanese art. The exhibition includes 24 colourful ukiyo-e prints, including a number of dramatic multiple sheet images that have rarely been on public display before. It focuses on works by the celebrated print designers Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), two of the most prolific and successful artists of their day. This touring exhibition has been organised by the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Oxford.

Powerful Nature: Inspiring Japanese Art and Culture Friday 20 September – Sunday 26 January 2020 Museum & Art Gallery FREE - Give What You Think An exhibition of Japanese watercolours and prints from Derby Museums’ own collection, including works made by two of Japan’s most famous artists, Katsushika Hokusai (c.1760-1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Displayed in the gallery adjoining the Japanese Ghosts and Demons exhibition, many of these works date to a similar period, but focus on a different recurring theme in Japanese art – the wonder and beauty of nature. Images of birds, animals and people going about their daily lives are surrounded by carefully depicted landscapes, representing popular destinations or spiritual places. Alongside these beautiful works on paper will be displayed objects influenced by Japanese art and culture from across Derby Museums’ collections including examples of Derby Porcelain and a rare suit of Samurai armour, which has recently been the focus of a research and conservation project in partnership with Lincoln University.

Derby Mean Time Saturday 14 September – Saturday 1 February 2020 Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think Artist Tim Shore explores the legacy of John Flamsteed (1646 –1719), the first Astronomer Royal, in an exhibition that includes animation, photography, prints and books. Flamsteed lived in Derby and made his astronomical readings using a zero degree line of longitude – a prime meridian – that placed Derby at the centre of space and time. On display at the centre of the exhibition is Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis, the great star atlas of 1723, around which Shore’s work rotates, exploring time travel, space and place. Derby Mean Time is supported by Arts Council England, University of Derby, QUAD and D-Lab.
The Recovery Quilt Until Sunday 12 November Museum & Art Gallery - Soldiers Story Gallery FREE - Give What You Think The Recovery Quilt was created by over 50 participants who stitched their personal responses to ‘recovery’. Taking inspiration from the ‘Crimea Quilts’ made by convalescent soldiers, the quilt is made up of hand-stitched textiles using vintage linens and threads. Responding to official war photographer Mark Neville’s Battle Against Stigma project, to raise awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, the quilt references a history of conflict and recovery, illustrating the participants’ personal journeys and stories. The project was led by Common Threads, an arts organisation supporting wellbeing through creative practice.

VENUE HIRE Derby Museum and Art Gallery on The Wardwick Centrally located, and perhaps the grandest building on The Wardwick, this 19th Century venue has a splendour all of its own. With a licensed bar and room for 200 guests to dance the night away, it offers a fantastic space to mark that special occasion, as well as the flexibility to host larger scale events, conferences and fairs.
Weddings at Derby Museums The Museum and Art Gallery, at both The Strand and The Wardwick, is now licensed for civil marriages and civil partnership ceremonies. Please contact us and we will be delighted to show you around our range of distinctive rooms and galleries available for your special day. For more information, contact Christine on 01332 641901 or email christine@derbymuseums.org.
