What’s On November 2019 - February 2020 derbymuseums.org

HELLO There’s a Japanese flavour to autumn and winter in Derby Museum and Art Gallery. A selection of prints, inspired by the natural and supernatural world from the respective collections of Derby Museums and and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, will continue to delight. The show forms part of a nationwide Japan Season of Culture which runs up to the Olympics and Paralympics in 2020. There’s a range of events to coincide with - the Samurai code the exhibition where families can learn the rituals of the Bushido, of honour, and participate in traditional shadow puppet workshops. We’ll be commemorating the 300th Anniversary of the death of Derbyshire-born John Flamsteed; the first Astronomer Royal at Pickford’s House. Artist Tim Shore explores Flamsteed’s legacy and, at the centre of the exhibition, is Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis, the great star atlas of 1723. Shore’s work rotates around the atlas, exploring time travel, space and place. Flamsteed’s influence has spilled into our perennially popular festivities in the house; a starry Christmas awaits visitors and there’ll be games, crafts and stories with an astronomical twist.

In the Museum and Art Gallery, a Giving Wall will emerge this autumn. This display will look at the way philanthropy has shaped the city’s museums, from the generous founding donation of the industrialist Michael Thomas Bass in the late 1870s to those who have donated works of art or objects over the last 150 years. We’ll also be encouraging todays ‘givers’ to help secure the future of Derby Museums through donations to our Endowment campaign. Until 2021 every donation (up to a cumulative £1 million) will be doubled by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We look forward to seeing you this season.

THE MUSEUM OF MAKING Volunteer and help us ‘make’ the Museum of Making

Derby Silk Mill is midway through a five year £17m programme to create the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Derby City Council, Arts Council England and the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership. Celebrating the area’s rich history of innovation, the Museum of Making in the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site will be a contemporary space telling Derby’s 300 year history of making to inspire new creativity. Designed and made by the people and industries of Derby, with exhibits, workshops, activities and events there’ll be something for everyone. The Silk Mill is now closed to the public for events, activities and venue hire. The building will undergo a full re-development during 2019 and open as the new Museum of Making in 2020, bringing thousands of visitors to the city each year.

From building furniture in our workshops, to helping display our amazing collections and unpacking hidden objects – we’d love your regular support! Even if you have just a few hours or minutes to spare, join our volunteering newsletter to keep updated on family, corporate, remote, project-based and micro volunteering opportunities.Help us get the word out! EXHIBITIONS Process and Progress: The Creative Journeys of Ronald Pope and the Artists of the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award Friday 14 February – Sunday 10 May Museum & Art Gallery FREE - Give What You Think Explore the making process and progression of modernist sculptor Ronald Pope (1920-1997) and a series of artists who have all won the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award in the last 19 years. All artists were, for a time, based in Derbyshire, and their exploration of the landscape and people gives the work on display a sense of place. vickersartaward.co.uk Top: Unus by Ronald Pope, c. 1970, ceramic mounted on wooden base © Artist’s Estate/Derby Museums Above: Aumbry Cabinet by Ronald Pope, c.1960, copper © Artist’s Estate and Derby Museums

EXHIBITIONS Japanese Ghosts and Demons: Woodblock Prints from the Ashmolean Museum Until Sunday 26 January Museum & Art Gallery FREE - Give What You Think Giant spiders, dancing skeletons, winged goblins and hordes of ghostly warriors are among the subjects depicted in this display of striking 19th Century woodblock prints, drawn from the Ashmolean Museum’s rich collection of Japanese art. The exhibition includes 24 colourful ukiyo-e prints, including a number of dramatic multiple sheet images that have rarely been on public display before. It focuses on works by the celebrated print designers Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), two of the most prolific and successful artists of their day. This touring exhibition has been organised by the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Oxford.

Powerful Nature: Inspiring Japanese Art and Culture Until Sunday 26 January Museum & Art Gallery FREE - Give What You Think An exhibition of Japanese watercolours and prints from Derby Museums’ own collection, including works made by two of Japan’s most famous artists, Katsushika Hokusai (c.1760-1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858). Displayed in the gallery adjoining the Japanese Ghosts and Demons exhibition, many of these works date to a similar period, but focus on a different recurring theme in Japanese art – the wonder and beauty of nature. Images of birds, animals and people going about their daily lives are surrounded by carefully depicted landscapes, representing popular destinations or spiritual places. Alongside these beautiful works on paper will be displayed objects influenced by Japanese art and culture from across Derby Museums’ collections including examples of Derby Porcelain and a rare suit of Samurai armour, which has recently been the focus of a research and conservation project in partnership with Lincoln University.

EXHIBITIONS Looks Sew Good: Magazines and Dressmaking Patterns from the 1930s Until Saturday 22 February Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think The 1930s was an era when Hollywood started to take over from the couturiers and high glamour was in. To acquire such a wardrobe, however, was well out of the reach of most, creating a gap in the market that was filled by home dressmaking. Ladies’ journals inspired women to deploy their sewing skills to emulate the styles they saw at the cinema and on showreels of society events. This exhibition looks at some of the magazines and patterns from the Pickford’s House collection that encouraged women to transform what they saw into reality.

Derby Mean Time Until Saturday 22 February Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think Artist Tim Shore explores the legacy of John Flamsteed (1646 –1719), the first Astronomer Royal, in an exhibition that includes animation, photography, prints and books. Flamsteed lived in Derby and made his astronomical readings using a zero degree line of longitude – a prime meridian – that placed Derby at the centre of space and time. On display at the centre of the exhibition is Flamsteed’s Atlas Coelestis, the great star atlas of 1723, around which Shore’s work rotates, exploring time travel, space and place. Derby Mean Time is supported by Arts Council England, University of Derby, QUAD and D-Lab.

The Recovery Quilt Fashion House Until Saturday 22 February Pickford’s House FREE - Give What You Think A rare glimpse inside the private wardrobe of Grace Elvina, Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston. This is a wonderful opportunity to indulge in sumptuous, elegant evening wear from the Jazz Age. Featuring spectacular 1920s and 30s couture gowns from the fashion houses of Chanel, Worth, Hartnell and Vionnet, this represents the epitome of style from the golden age of glamour.

10

Until Sunday 12 November Museum & Art Gallery - Soldiers Story Gallery FREE - Give What You Think The Recovery Quilt was created by over 50 participants who stitched their personal responses to ‘recovery’. Taking inspiration from the ‘Crimea Quilts’ made by convalescent soldiers, the quilt is made up of hand-stitched textiles using vintage linens and threads. Responding to official war photographer Mark Neville’s Battle Against Stigma project, to raise awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, the quilt references a history of conflict and recovery, illustrating the participants’ personal journeys and stories.

From the Renaissance onwards, artists became celebrities. Names such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and our very own Joseph Wright are familiar to us all, but what about their female contemporaries? Why do we not know their names and why is their work less celebrated? More recent artists such as Frida Kahlo and Tracy Emin have gained recognition, but their predecessors are still hidden in the shadows of history. This talk by Sue Argyll will introduce some of these brilliant women and their work. Suitable for young people and adults.
