HELLO
THE SILK MILL
The big story this quarter is The Silk Mill and “Re:Making the Museum”, a project to redevelop this iconic building as a space to inspire the maker, creator and innovator in us all. Since October, hundreds of you have been involved in designing and creating furniture, fixtures and signage, discussing how the space could function and selecting objects from our collection to illustrate the significance of the space and the heritage of the city.
Co-make Workshops
Phase one of Re:Make focused on idea sharing, preparing the ground floor space and the initial experimentation in our new workshop, allowing for the next phase in the co-make process to begin. The Silk Mill will be open on a regular basis and throughout January and February we are offering drop-in Co-make Workshops for you to get involved in this exciting next phase. See opposite for opening times and more information.
11 January, 18 January, 25 January, 1 February, 8 February, 15 February.
2014 promises to be an exciting time at the Museum and Art Gallery with the arrival of a café, a space to refresh and reflect after your visit with us. The Joseph Wright Institute will be a place to celebrate the legacy of Derby’s world famous eighteenth century artist, allowing everyone the opportunity to learn about his life and works through a programme of events, activities and online resources. Along with these exciting additions there may be a bit of disruption in parts of the museum for the next few months as we are having some work done to reduce the risks of fire. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause to you and your visit. Please check the website or get in touch with us on 01332 641904 for more information.
Happy New Year! The Derby Museums Team

Come and unlock your inner maker and help us to Re:Make the Museum. The next stage of the project looks at designing and making the furniture and fittings for the ground floor, along with planning how the space could function. You can design café furniture, interactive displays, exhibition fixtures and fittings and more. Reviving past skills or learning new ones, this is your opportunity to make part of The Silk Mill!
