HELLO The highlight of this spring’s programme is the exhibition Joseph Wright and the Lure of Italy. Joseph Wright was captivated by Italy and its rich culture and landscape made a lasting impact on his art and personal life. It was the time of his honeymoon and the birthplace of his first child Anna Romana. The exhibition explores the influence of the landscapes and antiquities of that beguiling country during his sojourn there in the 1770s. We are privileged to have been loaned work by Derbyshire families who embarked on the Grand Tour in the 18th and 19th centuries. Paintings feature family members from the great houses of Locko Park, Tissington Hall and Chatsworth. We’ve delved into the diaries and letters of Derbyshire travellers to enrich our understanding about the items they brought home with them, as well as their thoughts, feelings and day-to-day activities whilst abroad. The exhibition is part of The Grand Tour; a series of events across the major galleries and museums of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. To celebrate the Italian connection, we’re showing a series of films inspired by or produced in Italy. Enjoy the classic romance, Roman Holiday, part of the Derby Film Festival, and the seminal Italian sci-fi horror, Planet of the Vampires, part of our Museums at Night programming on Friday 13 May. See page 10 for details. At the beginning of each month join us for Super Saturday; a chance for the whole family to follow a trail around the three museum sites and take part in some fantastic activities. Themes for the days include: Journeys, The Natural World and Treasures. So whilst Joseph Wright and his friends had to travel around Italy for inspiration, Derby Museums can offer its visitors a whole world of discovery - on your doorstep. However, all this wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of all our donors. Whether you are putting a pound in our donation boxes or sponsoring an event, you are making a difference. Thank you.

JOSEPH WRIGHT & THE LURE OF ITALY MUSEUM & ART GALLERY | 19 MARCH - 12 JUNE For many wealthy Europeans, The Grand Tour, which reached its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries, marked a rite of passage that culminated in a visit to Italy; a country rich in the remains of classical history, art, and landscape. Among these tourists were Derbyshire men and women, including the artist Joseph Wright, who made his own artistic pilgrimage between 1773 and 1775. This exhibition draws upon this formative period in Wright’s life, alongside the experiences of his fellow Derbeians abroad. Among paintings and drawings from Derby Museums’ collection are treasures gathered together from public and private collections in Derbyshire and further afield, some of which have never before been seen in Derby. @derbymuseums #lureofitaly

Where we live: Mapping the city and county
Pickford’s House was once a home that in the 18th century would have been filled with the laughter of a relatively well-off family. To celebrate the loan to Derby Museums of the portrait of ‘Master Thomas Fane and his Dog’ by George Romney, this exhibition explores the 18th century experience of childhood; from the fine country house to the gloom of the workhouse.
until 18 June Pickford’s House FREE The development of maps of Derby and Derbyshire over the last 400 years allows us to chart the changes that have happened to the places we live in. For hundreds of years maps and plans have been produced to show who owned what and to help us to get from one place to another. How have the places we live in changed? Can you find the places you know on our collection of old maps?

A spaceship is lured to a mysterious planet, where the crew are killed and their bodies possessed by the near-extinct alien race. One by one, the crew begin to fall to this alien influence. A hugely influential sci-fi/horror hybrid whose visual influence you can see in Ridley Scott ’s Alien (1979), a film that owes Bava a huge debt.

SHOPS At Derby Museums we are proud to support local artists and makers and our shop positioned within the Museum and Art Gallery is a great place to find that unique gift. Tell us what you want! Pop along to The Silk Mill Project Lab and tell us exactly what you would like to see and buy in our shop. Whether its gadgets or gizmos we’d love to know what inspires you. NEW! This spring sees the opening of a new shop in The Brewhouse at Pickford’s House; a space full of gifts inspired by our beautiful garden as well as traditional children’s toys.
