HELLO This spring we open a new permanent gallery - notice nature, feel joy. This is the fruit of a year long programme in which we have asked Derby people, volunteers, academics and specialists to explore their natural world inspired by our natural history collections. Hundreds of people participated and together we have produced a gallery of marvel and wonder. We are also bringing a beautiful collection of decorative arts via The Crafts Council for the temporary exhibition Bud to Bloom. This show illustrates how the natural world inspires modern artist and makers. There will be some fascinating events and activities to accompany the exhibition including Nature Bites, a series of expert talks and live taxidermy event as part of the Museums at Night celebrations. We continue to expand perspectives of what a museum could be by hosting TEDx Derby on Saturday 18 April at The Silk Mill. Here a series of speakers will talk about how they have used creativity and a sideways view of the world to promote social change. In June, along with many venues across the city, we will be hosting events for the first Derby Book Festival. This includes a lecture by renowned railway writer Nigel Lowey at The Silk Mill in the shadow of the much loved Derby Midland Model Railway. The proposed funding reductions to Derby Museums Trust of 26% announce last December will now be phased over two years. This is good news as it gives the museums opportunity to raise additional income to become more financially resilient. Pickford’s House will now remain open although the cuts mean it will close on Sundays. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us over the last few months. It’s very clear that Derby Museums matter.

Executive Director, Derby Museums Trust

EXHIBITIONS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY Bud to Bloom 25 April - 14 June FREE In celebration of the opening of our new gallery ‘notice nature feel joy’ we are excited to be able to bring to Derby work selected from the Crafts Council Collection inspired by the natural world and life-cycle of plants. Ever since people first started to decorate objects they have taken inspiration from nature. We see wonderful examples of this in our collections of Derby Porcelain in the Coffee House. Plants, flowers and fruit have influenced the forms and patterning of these objects, as well as the selection of materials and the way they are made. All of these works have been made by UK makers in the last 40 years. The exhibition includes leading UK glassmakers Angela Jarman and Neil Wilkin, textile artist Michael Brennand-Wood, designer Tord Boontje, silversmiths David Clarke and Junko Mori, and ceramicists Felicity Aylieff, Mary Rogers and Richard Slee.

Common Treasury 9 May - 21 June FREE When it opened in 1879, Derby Museum was the culmination of many years of planning and thought. Many of the objects that the people of Derby know and love were part of the founding collections. The collection now contains thousands of items assembled in many cases through the generosity of Derby’s people. This exhibition describes how Derby’s collections have grown over 150 years. It will also explore how the museum has perceived its role in the city and more importantly what the public has expected of it. Common Treasury will ask questions of the purpose of a public museum. How can the past inform decisions as we collect material culture for the future? Derby has changed since the museum opened. How important is a freely accessible public space where everyone can learn about their place in the world?

John Stobart An Artistic Journey from Derby across the Atlantic 26 June - 6 September FREE From his earliest beginnings as a student at Derby College of Arts and Crafts, John Stobart has always used paint to depict the people in the landscapes that he sees around him. Taking inspiration as a young artist from Joseph Wright of Derby’s work, he has become one of the best-known North American maritime painters. Over the last 60 years he has produced more than 600 paintings, a special selection of which can be seen in this retrospective of his life’s work. This is the first major exhibition of his work to be seen in the city where he first trained and which was such a great inspiration for his early work.

NOTICE NATURE FEEL JOY NEW NATURE GALLERY Crawling, jumping, swimming and fluttering… our natural history collection has found its way to its new home. Nestled in the heart of the museum, the new nature gallery profiles some of the amazing specimens from our collection. This flexible display is open, playful, experimental and emotive and explores the themes and stories that you suggested from the start. We’ve worked with visitors, friends, supporters and partners to co-produce the gallery and help us to share our collection in new and interesting ways. Our aim is for the gallery to act as a stimulus, to excite and inspire you to take notice of your ‘own natural world’. We hope you will leave the gallery full of inspiration and ideas with a desire to appreciate, take care of, learn about and respond to the natural world around you. The gallery is a platform for three interventional commissions; a contemporary taxidermy response to the historic bird collection by Jazmine Miles-Long, a delicate silver insect by Justin Gilday and an evocative soundscape by Richard Birkin.

Our nature gallery notice nature feel joy, has been created with an amazing team of volunteers. Our deepest thanks go to them for their generosity of time, knowledge, skill and energy in coproducing this gallery.

Over the coming months, as we play and experiment with the possibilities for the new gallery, we’d love to see your nature drawings, photographs, facts and anecdotes. @DMNature dmnature.tumblr.com DCMS/Wolfson Fund

STEAM MAKERS IN RESIDENCE THE SILK MILL The Silk Mill is undergoing a transformational programme that explores themes of ‘making and social history’, drawn from Derby and the Derwent Valleys’ unique and on-going heritage stories. These activities take place in the refurbished ground floor of the building and are directly informing our plans for the full redevelopment of the site as a Museum of Making, over the coming 5 years. To ensure our developments are both relevant and resilient, we work together with our audiences, volunteers and specialists to develop our spaces and programmes. Our ‘Makers-in-Residence’ are an important part of this approach - with practitioners drawn from fields including art, architecture, design, science, and technology. Our most recent residencies are part of our growing ‘Institute of STEAM’ and have focused on exploring the themes and concepts across the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths to develop our ideas around how creativity is integral to innovation and making. The residencies have explored the co-production of experiences of making for our audiences, inspired by the culture of making past, present and future. Our makers have been developing and testing their ideas, exploring spaces and collections, whilst also informing their own creative practices. instituteofsteam.org

love your museum show your support - buy a bird To celebrate the launch of our new nature gallery we want to fill the walls of the Museum and Art Gallery with beautiful birds. For a minimum donation you can buy a bird, inspired by our collections and printed with a name of your choice to be displayed on our walls for one year. An ideal way to celebrate a special occasion, remember a loved one or simply to show how much you love Derby Museums. Your donations help us to pay for our learning and activity programmes for children and families. For more information, please ask at reception at the Museum and Art Gallery or call 01332 641904.

leave a legacy A legacy in your will can be a simple way of supporting the art and collections that have inspired you through your lifetime. Your legacy will help us ensure that future generations have the opportunity to share your passion. If you would like to discuss your legacy in confidence, please contact sue@derbymuseums.org or call 01332 642239
