HELLO This winter we’d like you to get involved with all sorts of activity at Derby Museums. In February we’ll be examining the future of Museums both in our city and the rest of the UK. There will be a series of talks with experts and thinkers and we’d love you to contribute too. We’ve been making a number of improvements to Derby Museum and Art Gallery. The ‘forgotten’ back corridor has been spruced up and we’ve a new exhibition opening of work by members of Headway Derby which supports people with brain injuries. They will be responding to art poetry and photographs from the First World War. A new selection of landscape paintings has gone on display featuring works by Derek Jarman and Michael Porter. There will be further experiments with displays in the ceramics gallery in The Coffee House and we are eager to hear your views at a Ceramics Project Lab Prototype Day. Kick off your New Year and learn a new skill - we’ve got a packed adult learning programme including an introduction to astronomy, drawing classes and crafts. We’re delighted to welcome back chef Ralph Skripek who will be running Dine & Demo evenings at Pickford’s House. At Derby Silk Mill the ground floor experience will be refreshed in the New Year from January. It will be closed to the public for 6 weeks. This phase will allow the project team to plan and prepare for re-opening the refreshed space in February. We’d like to welcome you back to Derby Silk Mill from Saturday 13 February to contribute to the Project Lab - a chance to get involved with the development of Derby Silk Mill, Museum of Making, going forward. There is also the chance to take part in the 2016 edition of the What If? Machine on Saturday 13 February. See page 5 for details.

Museum & Art Gallery until 21 February Opening in 1879 Derby Museum was the culmination of many years of planning and thought. Many of the objects that the people of Derby know and love were part of the founding collections. The collection now contains thousands of items assembled in many cases through the generosity of Derby’s people. This exhibition describes how Derby’s collections have grown over 150 years. It also explores how the museum has perceived its role in the city and more importantly what the public has expected of it.

Joseph Wright and the Lure of Italy 18 March - 12 June Museum & Art Gallery FREE For many wealthy Europeans, The Grand Tour, which reached its heyday in the 18th and 19th centuries, marked a rite of passage that culminated in a visit to Italy; a country rich in the remains of classical history, art, and landscape. Among these tourists were Derbyshire men and women, including the artist Joseph Wright, who made his own artistic pilgrimage between 1773 and 1775. This exhibition draws upon this formative period in Wright’s life, alongside the experiences of his fellow Derbeians abroad. Among paintings and drawings from Derby Museums’ collection are treasures gathered together from public and private collections in Derbyshire and further afield, some of which have never before been seen in Derby.

23 April - 12 June Museum & Art Gallery FREE
Derby Museums is pleased to showcase new work by Turner Prize-winning artist, Simon Starling. With interests in travel, as well as materials, process, and transformation, Simon’s work offers a unique perspective on Wright.
In summer 2015, we introduced an exciting new project to conserve two badly damaged and over-painted scenes of Rome’s famous Coliseum, by Joseph Wright. In spring 2016, we present the results of the painstaking treatment that is uncovering Wright’s original work, along with a special display on the process of analysis and conservation.

We’ve used the walls of this intimate space like a page in a favourite album, a page now covered with a variety of luscious landscape paintings. This sequenced edit from our collection illustrates how artists have responded to landscapes in different ways; to record a feature, capture an essence, or make it their own. Sitting opposite these paintings, fragments of several landscapes have been captured by photographer Lauren Spencer.

Shellshock : Headway Derby Responses to WW1 23 January - 21 February Museum & Art Gallery FREE An exhibition of paintings by members of Headway Derby, an organisation which supports people with brain injuries, their families and carers. In a project responding to WW1, the group took inspiration from art, poetry, photographs and letters to create work, which resonates with their own experiences of head injury. Georgian Children until Saturday 4 June Pickford’s House FREE
Where we live: Mapping the city and county until Saturday 2 April Pickford’s House FREE The development of maps of Derby and Derbyshire over the last 400 years allows us to chart the changes that have happened to the places that we live in. For hundreds of years maps and plans have been produced to show who owned what and to help us to get from one place to another. How have the places that we live in changed? Can you find the places that you know on our collection of old maps?
Pickford’s House was once a home that in the 18th century would have been filled with the laughter of a relatively well-off family. To celebrate the loan to Derby Museums of the portrait of Master Thomas Fane and his Dog, by George Romney, this exhibition explores the 18th century experience of childhood; from the fine country house to the gloom of the workhouse.
