HELLO Welcome to Derby Museums! The last six months there has been great activity at the Museum and Art Gallery. In May we opened the Joseph Wright Institute, a combined gallery and research space enabling everyone to get close to our fabulous collections of work by Joseph Wright of Derby. Virtually all of the material we hold by the artist including prints, drawing and oil painting are now accessible to the public. The opening of the Institute coincided with our hosting of the exhibition ‘Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond,’ which continues until August 31. From September we’ll be hosting an exhibition of sculpture by Denis O’Connor in which he discusses the notion of displacement and home. Originally from Ireland, Denis has lived in Derby for over 25 years and this exhibition is a personal exploration of feelings of belonging and longing. We are continuing our conversations with our visitors about developments to the new Nature Gallery. This summer there will be plenty of opportunities for you to contribute ideas and new perspectives to this project through our Nature Lab and workshops. Displays at Pickford’s House are being refreshed and central to this is a new exhibition of Lost Landscapes of Derby, watercolours from the collection amassed by Alfred Goodey. The pictures provide a glimpse of Derby through industrialisation, war, fire, and flood over two centuries. At the Silk Mill we are continuing to inspire the next generation of makers through our collections and stories of making and getting hands on using our digital manufacturing equipment in the Silk Mill workshop. If all this culture seems exhausting you’ll now be able to relax in The Coffee House amidst the displays of Derby porcelain, which opened in mid-June at the Museum and Art Gallery. Here at Derby Museums, we can provide enlightenment for the mind and refreshment for the body!

tHE NatURE gaLLERY MUSEUM & ART GALLERY Creeping, crawling, rolling and flying … our Natural History collection is on the move and we’d love you to help shape our plans. We’ve had some amazing suggestions from you already and would like to continue the dialogue in our new nature project space. Over the coming months we will play and experiment with the possibilities for the new gallery and to trial some of your initial ideas. We’d like to work with you to develop the interpretation and select the specimens that will articulate the themes you’ve asked for. Drop into the project space to explore the plans with us and look out for a sequence of activities and handling sessions designed to inspire your curiosity. We’re always interested in what you’ve noticed about your own natural world and you’re welcome to leave your anecdotes, photographs, drawings and suggestions. The collection will begin to move in the Autumn so there’s plenty of time to join us. If you’d like to volunteer your time please email info@derbymuseums.org. EXHIBItIONS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond until 31 August Museum & Art Gallery FREE Joseph Wright ‘of Derby’ (1734-1797) lived and worked in Bath between November 1775 and June 1777. This brief and little-known episode in Wright’s life marked a crossroads in his career, yet it has never been explored in detail. ‘Joseph Wright of Derby: Bath and Beyond’ will place Wright in the context of the many artists, musicians, writers, business people and scientists living and working in the Georgian spa town and present for the first time a comprehensive view of his life and work during those eighteen months.

Wright Inspired Museum & Art Gallery FREE Joseph Wright’s work has long proven a rich source of inspiration for artists and makers. This exhibition brings together rarely seen paintings from our stores to trace the history of this fascination. Works by students from Burton College and Borrow Wood Primary School reflect the perspectives of a new generation of artists.

6

Defining a Line: New Sculpture by Denis O’connor 20 September-23 November Museum & Art Gallery FREE Denis O’Connor’s small-scale steel sculptures reference the notions of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are influenced by over 25 years of journeying between his homes in Derbyshire and Ireland. The new work plays with scale and creates a tension between the different sculptural forms, communicating opposites such as stable and unstable, comfortable and uncomfortable, real and unreal. Each of these scenarios tries to address notions of belonging, identity and home, using recognisable domestic objects such as chairs, ladders and houses.

7

EXHIBItIONS PICKFORD’S HOUSE Highlights from the alfred goodey collection of Old Derby Pictures from 12 July Pickford’s House FREE Between 1936 and 1945, local art collector Alfred Goodey donated over 600 pictures of old Derby to the Museum and Art Gallery. Spanning three centuries, this incredible collection offers an unrivalled glimpse of the city through development, industrialisation, war, fire, and flood. This exhibition is the first of a series dedicated to Goodey’s collection, and features works by many of Derby’s celebrated local artists, including Alfred John Keene, Harold Gresley, and Ernest Townsend.

EVENtS & actIVItIES THE SILK MILL Things are really beginning to come together as we Re:Make the ground floor of the Silk Mill. During a period of great activity, our visitors have joined us in designing and manufacturing the elements needed for a flexible and inspirational museum space – living the principles of creativity, innovation and making that have always driven Derby. Our audiences, visitors, staff and makers-in-residence have made a formidable co-production team and we continue to develop activities which draw inspiration from our heritage stories and utilise our workshop resources. We continue to host diverse events and activities – from comedy nights to national conferences and international programmes. Young people have been aiming high during this year’s ArtScience Prize, where students from Derby have been exploring the topic ‘Energy of the Future’ with mentors drawn from science, arts and innovation fields. All of the groups have had outstanding ideas, with the ‘Algae Fuel’ team selected to travel with us to Paris to push their ideas even further with their ArtScience Prize peers from across the world in a week-long residency at Le Laboratoire. Read more about their journey and the developments here at the Silk Mill on Twitter and the project blog. Get involved by visiting us to explore the space, play at the #MakerBar or take part in workshops. Come and share our collective passion for creativity, innovation and making!
