HeLLO Derby Museums heads into the summer with wind in its sails (and not just because of the John Stobart exhibition, more later). In May 2015, it was confirmed that we had been earmarked £9.4m by the Heritage Lottery Fund to redevelop The Silk Mill as Derby’s Museum of Making. This will both explore the creative heritage of the city and enable local people to ‘make’ the new attraction with us. Over the next two years we will be further developing plans, with building work to begin in 2018 before the new museum is open to the public in 2019-20. Meanwhile there is an exciting range of events and exhibitions at all our sites. In July, as part of The Grand Tour programme across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, we will be showing two rarely seen works of the Colosseum in Rome by Joseph Wright of Derby. One is undergoing conservation and we’ll be explaining the intricate and highly skilled work of the conservator. Our main exhibition this summer is a major retrospective of the Derby artist John Stobart. We’ll be showing a range of works including scenes of the city and the maritime subjects for which he is most renowned. There is plenty to do for families over the summer. We are participating in the UK Festival of Archaeology, diverse events include discovering ancient Egypt, an exploration of the Bronze Age Shardlow logboat and even an insight into forensic archaeology. For visitors inspired by the Museum’s new nature gallery, Notice Nature Feel Joy, there will be further opportunity to learn about the world around us through Nature Bites talks. In August we’ll be hosting our first Summer Spectacular at Pickford’s House with a busy Georgian market, magicians and traditional street vendors. Art, natural history, archaeology and history all come to life in our museums. If you really love museums, you can participate in a national campaign led by the National Museums Directors Council - I Love Museums. Visit their website ilovemuseums.com and leave a comment about why you love museums. I love museums – because they help us find our place, in the world. #ILoveMuseums

eXHIBItIOnS museum & art Gallery John Stobart An Artistic Journey from Derby across the Atlantic until 6 September FREE From his earliest beginnings as a student at Derby College of Arts and Crafts, John Stobart has always used paint to depict the people in the landscapes that he sees around him. Taking inspiration as a young artist from Joseph Wright of Derby’s work he has become one of the best-known North American maritime painters. Over the last 60 years he has produced over 600 paintings a special selection of which can be seen in this retrospective of his life’s work. The first major exhibition of his work to be seen in the city in which he first trained and was a great inspiration for his early work. Supported by The John Stobart Foundation

kerri Pratt: Of A Place Winner of the Jonathan Vickers Fine Art Award 2014 19 September - 15 November FREE Kerri Pratt ’s paintings have references to curious spaces derived from man-made, industrial and urban landscapes. Drawing on childhood memories of growing up in an ex-mining town, when the demise of previously thriving industries of Collieries, Potteries, Pipeworks and Brickworks were all too prominent. Kerri has reconnected with her home county of Derbyshire to produce a new series of paintings referencing remnants and traces of our industrial heritage.
Common treasury until 15 November FREE Opening in 1879 Derby Museum was the culmination of many years of planning and thought. Many of the objects that the people of Derby know and love were part of the founding collections. The collection now contains thousands of items assembled in many cases through the generosity of Derby’s people. This exhibition describes how Derby’s collections have grown over 150 years. It will also explore how the museum has perceived its role in the city and more importantly what the public has expected of it.

Experience and commitment to make your event a success.
From conventional to creative – private celebrations to parties – community events to lectures.
The Museum & Art Gallery is in the heart of the city. Enjoy your event surrounded by the paintings of Joseph Wright of Derby or share an Afternoon Tea with your friends amongst Derby Museums’ collection of world class ceramics dating from the 1750s.
The Silk Mill stands on the site of the world’s first factory and is part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its central location and attractive riverside location offers flexibility for larger scale events; celebrations and parties, performances and fairs, with capacity for up to 250.
Pickford’s House is a stunning townhouse and garden dated 1770. It is perfect for the more intimate family party or corporate dinner.
