HELLO We have a mixture of nostalgia and deep reflection over the next few months. The wonderful Story of Children’s Television exhibition opened in the Autumn and the show has something for everyone. Displays from Morph to Muffin the Mule will help families learn together. Already we’ve been enthralled by people across the generations smiling and laughing together as the exhibition has brought back fond memories of childhood. In contrast we have several small shows and events which highlight the troubles and complexity of the world. In the Military Gallery we are participating in A Remembrance for the Millions a digital display showing the names of 650,000 servicemen and women from all nations who died during 1916. In the Museum and Art Gallery there is an exhibition by Derby Bosnia and Herzegovina Community Association, which marks 21 years since the end of the civil war. It explores how refugees from the conflict made a new home in Derby. We are further tracing migration stories in late November as curator Rachel Atherton shows how archaeological evidence traces the myriad of backgrounds of the people who have shaped Derby over the last few thousand years. And don’t forget that the festive season is heralded by our ever popular Christmas event at Pickford’s House. Visitors are transported back to Christmas Eve 1823 as the house will be exquisitely decorated and will come to life with the sights and sounds of the season.

Bosnian War People and Children Preserving History, Language and Culture in East Midlands until 15 January 2017 Museum & Art Gallery FREE 2016 marks 21 years since the end of the war in Bosnia during which more than 8,000 people were killed and several hundred thousand were forced to flee their homes. Some of these people made a new home here in Derby. Last year the Derby Bosnia Herzegovina Community Association began a Heritage Lottery funded project, resulting in this exhibition, to document and interpret how Bosnian people integrated into life in the UK. www.bihcommunityderby.co.uk

The Ceramics Gallery Our new display illustrates the story of Derbyshire ceramic production over the last 300 years. Look out for the ‘story cards’, full of tales about the people involved in making the objects on display. Alongside the historic collection you’ll notice a sequence of contemporary interventions by ten makers. Spend some time exploring the makers’ tools and decorators’ sketches in the resource area whilst enjoying a refreshment from The Coffee House.
Drawing Project Lab Our drawing ‘project lab’ is here in the Landscape gallery for you to trial and test some drawing ideas. We’re interested in seeing what you doodle and hearing about the feelings you experience when you draw. All of the responses will inform a co-produced drawing project next year. Our aim is to build confidence in mark making and get as many people as we can to reclaim the joy of drawing without judgement. In the meantime, close your eyes and draw your face. Quickening 8 November - 17 December Pickford’s House FREE Quickening is a family of digital portraits, made using the latest RED camera technology. It taps into all that is uncanny about film and photography, using digital technology to blur the boundaries of the animate and inanimate, the past, and the ‘passed away’. Inspired by nineteenth century ‘photographer of souls’ Julia Margaret Cameron, Quickening explores the notion of ‘materialisation of the spirit’ as the soul quickens from its arrested moment, to engage with the viewer in the present. This haunting collaboration by Christine Parker, Jane Fletcher and Stephen Watson is to be found around the house inserted into the rooms where we might expect to find its original occupants.
Moneypenny’s Derby until 11 March 2017 Pickford's House FREE Explore 18th century Derby through the eyes of Joseph Pickford’s close friend and colleague, George Moneypenny. This exhibition brings together a collection of fine architectural prints by Moneypenny and Robert Hancock, made to illustrate William Hutton’s beautiful book, A History of Derby, of 1791. Moneypenny was a sculptor and worked closely with Pickford on many building projects including the architect’s own home on Friar Gate, as well as at Kedleston Hall and Staunton Harold.
