HELLO This Autumn there’s an eclectic mix of happenings in Derby’s Museums. At the Museum and Art Gallery we kick off with a thoughtful exhibition by the sculptor Denis O’ Connor. His work explores notions of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are influenced by over 25 years of journeying between his home in Derbyshire and his home in Ireland, the country of his birth. Following on in November will be The Curious Contraptions of Heath Robinson - an exhaustive display of drawings and prints capturing this complicated, humorous and very English mind. At the Silk Mill the spirit of invention and problem solving thrives (I’m sure Heath Robinson would have approved). One of our most important events of the year, The third Derby Mini Maker Faire takes place in October. It will be our biggest yet and a great opportunity for makers, hackers and artists to show off their ingenuity. Throughout November the Derwent Pulse installation will travel down the World Heritage Site, creating beautiful light sculptures. One of it’s stops is The Silk Mill, as it illustrates the valley that changed the world. We continue to re-develop the Natural History galleries at the Museum and Art Gallery and we still want you to contribute your thoughts and ideas in our ‘project lab’ - as to what makes you ‘Notice Nature’ #noticenature. If you’re interested in making, writing, drawing, thinking or just learning for pleasure, across our sites, there are activities for everyone. The Museum and Art Gallery will be hosting a series of late night openings beginning in November - an alternative exploration of discovery through musical performances, spoken word, theatre, film. Also in December our much loved Christmas event at Pickford’s House will see the lovely old building bedecked with decorations, singing and making. And remember our shops are a great repository for imaginative gifts and stocking fillers. Derby Museums are living up to their ambitions to be the centre for discovery and curiosity in our city.
Executive Director, Derby Museums Trust

DENIS O’ CONNOR EXHIBITION Defining a Line: New Sculpture by Denis O’Connor 20 September - 23 November Museum and Art Gallery FREE ‘For the first time in July this year [2011] after 25 years of travelling across the Irish Sea, I arrived at the half way point of this ferry crossing and could see Snowdonia to the east and the Dublin Mountains to the west. I asked myself the question ‘Where is my home?’ A question that is possibly asked by the thousands of Irish ferry travellers who take this journey year after year.’ - Denis O’Connor We’re delighted to be showing a new body of work made specifically for us by sculptor Denis O’Connor. His small-scale steel sculptures reference the notions of ‘home’ and ‘displacement’ and are influenced by over 25 years of journeying between his home in Derbyshire and his home in Ireland, the country of his birth. The new work plays with scale and creates a tension between the different sculptural forms, communicating opposites such as stable and unstable, comfortable and uncomfortable, real and unreal. Each of these scenarios tries to address notions of belonging, identity and home, using recognisable domestic objects such as chairs, ladders and houses. These are often subverted or balanced precariously on one another, playing with scale and reality. This is the most intimate and personal work created by Denis, who is well known for his public art sculptures.
