What’s On July - October 2018 www.derbymuseums.org
HELLO This summer there is a whole world to discover at Derby Museums – both human and animal. Our new World Cultures Gallery is finally taking shape, exposing the beautiful Victorian architecture of the original museum building. A wonderful and intriguing array of objects from five continents has been artfully displayed in sections inspired by common human experiences such as conflict, love, furnishment and adornment. There’s little interpretation to begin with as we gather responses from visitors about their emotions and reactions to the gallery and collections. We have two nature themed temporary exhibitions running through the summer. Wild is a celebration of the natural history of the British Isles featuring some of our most elusive animals; Bare Bones looks into the fascinating world of animal skeletons and includes a range of animals from the Thornback Ray to a Burmese Python. At Pickford’s House we celebrate Britain’s greatest crime writer, with an exhibition dedicated to the work of Agatha Christie. Visitors will be able to explore how Christie developed her storylines, discover how the designs of many of the book covers developed and revolutionised the future of book design and see a selection of Christie’s personal possessions which shed light on the life of this extraordinary woman. In the summer months we will also witness the momentous occasion of the breaking of ground for the redevelopment of Derby Silk Mill to build the new Museum of Making. An intensive 20 months of construction will follow as a stunning new museum emerges, celebrating 300 years of making in our city. Stay in touch with news of the Museum of Making through our Tumblr page http://derbysilkmill.tumblr.com/.

WORLD CULTURES GALLERY Welcome to a friendly new gallery packed full of incredible objects from around the world, a place to encounter the familiar and the unfamiliar and discover new perspectives. As we move into phase two of the development of this co-produced gallery, we’ll be working with you to interpret the space in new and surprising ways. Look out for opportunities to participate. Each time you visit you’ll see the labels and text beginning to emerge for the beautiful displays of objects. Explore the seven areas of the gallery, co-produced by thousands of visitors, friends and volunteers. Settle into one of the comfortable chairs to reflect and read, or take a moment to leave your thoughts with us.
Object Walks Look out for museum objects in and around Derby. We’ve been taking the collection onto the streets to involve as many people in the developing gallery as we can. Why stop now?
Objects of Love We’re building a digital collection of objects that are precious to you. Do you love something so much you carry it everywhere you go? Something that you keep close to your heart or is simply irreplaceable. Tweet a photograph or drawing to @DMWorldCulture with the hashtag #ObjectsOfLove and it will appear on a screen in the gallery.

THE DERBY STORY We have been asking people to help Derby Museums write The Derby Story, a narrative which is being shaped with people through a series of questions to prompt conversations. Together with our city partners we hope to reveal the moments and figures that have shaped the city as we know it today. We have already had a fantastic range of responses from a range of people young and old telling us what it means to them to live and work in this vibrant city, as well as suggestions of people, events and places past and present which should have a chapter in The Derby Story. Our collective perspectives will bring these stories of our city to life. Please continue to contribute your thoughts and suggestions to create The Derby Story and keep up to date with the story as it develops. The Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill will display fascinating items from Derby’s rich industrial history, inspired by the makers of the past, made by the makers of today and will be designed to empower makers of the future through inspirational environments for learning programmes and activities.
