4 0 FANTASTIC! DERBY Danny Butler entertaining visitors with his bike stunts.

LOVES ITS NEW ARENA! F

antastic! The word frequently used to describe Derby’s new Arena and velodrome by the public and the stars of the cycling world who are queuing up to make use of the flagship facility. Since the opening of the Arena, on 19th March, Derby City Council have been ‘unwrapping’ the new facility and inviting the public to a series of events and open days. Open days have proved extremely popular with large numbers of visitors passing through, looking for a taste of what is on offer. The cream of British cycling

talent is also keen to discover what the velodrome has to offer and Joanna Rowsell MBE, 2012 Olympic Gold Medallist in the team pursuit, is the latest to visit the city. “It looks fantastic,” she told the Derbyshire Guardian. “It’s nice to see a venue like this being built, not for a Commonwealth Games or Olympic Games, like London or Glasgow. It’s nice that it’s just been built as a venue to be used by the public and the community. “The track looks lovely and bright and smooth and there’s a lot of other uses for the Arena as well. There’s the Wattbikes Studio,

there’s the badminton courts, there’s a lot of different things going on. It looks like a really good venue.” Joanna was at the Arena to conduct a series of Wattbike (indoor cycling performance measuring) Master Classes and meet youngsters who will be the future of the sport. “It’s been a pleasure to come and meet kids and other cyclists that have got into the sport having watched 2012. It’s coming up to three years now, so there are a lot of people that are established riders, now, as a result of the Olympics, so that is really good to see.”

London 2012 was an enormous success for British cycling and Joanna was part of the successful Great Britain ladies pursuit team. Has 2012 changed her life? “Definitely! There are a lot more demands on my time. I’m recognised out and about. I never really expected things to change because I’d been world champion three times and world record holder, I’d won some of the biggest things in cycling, except for the Olympics. I never realised how much of a deal it would really be. Life’s definitely changed, but for the better, I’d say.”

Olympic gold medallist Joanna Rowsell says the Arena is ‘fantastic’.

R-Record Order For Engine Builder Derby aero-engine builder Rolls-Royce has won its largest ever order, worth $9.2bn, to provide Trent 900 engines and TotalCare® service support to the Emirates airline. The engines will power 50 Airbus A380 aircraft that will enter service from 2016. The decision confirms the Trent 900 as the engine of choice on the four-engine A380. It has now secured more than 50 per cent market share on the aircraft, in addition to being selected by the majority of A380 customers. John Rishton, Rolls-Royce, Chief Executive Officer, said: “The success of Emirates over the last thirty years has been extraordinary; this is in no small part thanks to the exceptional leadership of Sir Tim Clark. Rolls-Royce has been proud to have been part of this success, powering Emirates aircraft since 1996. We are delighted that Emirates has again placed its trust in our technology, with the biggest order in our history.” Sir Tim Clark, Emirates Airline, President, said: “Rolls-Royce is a key partner for Emirates and we have been impressed with its commitment to continual improvements in the economic and operational performance of the Trent 900. These improvements have been decisive factors in our selection of the product for 50 of our A380s.

“Rolls-Royce is a key partner for Emirates and we have been impressed with its commitment to continual improvements in the economic and operational performance of the Trent 900.” Today’s announcement is significant not only because it cements the partnership between Emirates and Rolls-Royce, but also because of the significant economic impact that this will have on aviation manufacturing in the UK and Europe.” The Trent 900 powered the first commercial A380 in 2007 and is now used by eight operators on more than 70 aircraft, having logged over 4 million in-service flight hours. The engine offers the lowest lifetime fuel burn, with the latest version including technology developed for the Trent XWB and Trent 1000 engines. The order will help to secure jobs for the 14,000 Rolls-Royce employees in the city together with many thousands more in the local supply chain.

Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance FAQ

What is the make-up of an air ambulance crew? Our local air ambulances will both fly with a crew made up of one trauma doctor, one or sometimes two critical car paramedics and one pilot. Do you have information on the condition of the patient after they reach hospital? Generally, we don’t know anything about the patient after we have dropped them off at the hospital. We may be able to inform you whether they were stable during the flight, on a case-by-case basis. How is DLRAA funded? DLRAA is funded entirely from voluntary donations from the public and corporate partners. We receive no government funding. How much do missions cost, on average? A mission for DLRAA costs £1,700 on average. How serious does an incident have to be for the air ambulance to attend? DLRAA will be called to assist at any incident where a patient is suffering from a life or limb threatening injury or illness. They may also be required to travel to a patient who is suffering in a remote location.

Whose decision is it to call out the air ambulance to an incident? Ambulance control centres have dispatch teams dedicated to deploying medical resources to the scene of an incident. DLRAA is predominantly deployed by East Midlands Ambulance Service. Can they land anywhere? DLRAA can land in an area that is twice the size of the helicopter rotor (26cm2) as long as it is safe to do so. They have special designation from the UK Civil Aviation Authority to land at hospitals, on motorways, in city centres – almost anywhere. What is The Air Ambulance Service? The Air Ambulance Service is the parent charity of three different air ambulance services. Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance and Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance are both regional trauma and emergency air ambulance services run by The Air Ambulance Service. They also run the Children’s Air Ambulance, which is a dedicated national service that flies critically ill children from local hospitals to more specialist paediatric units.

FACELIFT FOR FRIAR GATE BRIDGE

Derby City Council are to spend £260,000 to improve the appearance of the Friar Gate Bridge. The council have applied for a Heritage Lottery Grant of £900,000 to restore the historic structure and it is hoped that this facelift will improve their chances of success in winning the cash. It is understood that the council have set aside the money in their capital budget, for 2015-16,

£1 on the understanding that they would maintain it. However, signs of decay soon appeared and no significant work has been done to the bridge since. In 2010 the council installed netting to protect the public from the possibility of falling masonry. The bridge was built for the Great Northern Railway by Andrew Handyside in 1878 and designed to appease those residents opposed to the railway in what was, at the time, the most elegant street in Derby. They have both said it’s a great arena, it’s a great facility to have. Just having an indoor cycling facility is so important, especially on a day like today with all the rain outside. Cycling’s been booming but no one wants to go out and ride in that. To have an indoor facility is so valuable.” Preparations are also now beginning for the 2016 Olympics, in Rio. “Yes, I think it’s around seventeen months to Rio, so in a heavy training phase over this summer. The next big event is the European Championships in October, so plenty of time ahead of that to get some good training done.” The public, too, have been keen to see what this new facility has to offer, and local cyclists, young and old, are keen to try a new experience. My daughter may be interested, something to take up, now that it’s here.” Would Sean be interested I events here? “Yes, definitely. It looks like it could cater for all different needs. It’s very impressive.” Over the weekend, there was plenty of different things to catch the visitors’ eye. Around the Arena there was a succession of musical and mime performances. Britain’s leading Extreme BMX cyclist Danny Butler was performing stunts in one arena, while the badminton court area was constantly busy. Earlier in the week the Arena had shown just how adaptable it was in

I’ve been in the Wattbike studio and I’m most definitely looking at getting accredited to use the track.” Nigel Lever, of Nottingham, is slightly envious now, of this wonderful facility in his neighbouring city. He came for a look around with daughter Mollie and son Archie. “We have nothing all like this,” he said. “We are looking forward to coming to see a professional or club event here. My son’s a cyclist with Castle Cycling Club. He would love to have a go on the track when he’s old enough.” As we spoke groups of youngsters were being taken through an accreditation training programme by the coaches at the Arena. The Arena will allow a new generation of cyclists including my 10 year old son who also rides for Derby Mercury to experience track cycle and maybe we can have more top track cyclists from Derby alongside (Breadsall Olympic hopeful) Hannah Blount.” Gregg and Lyndsey Bannister, of Allestree, were enjoying their first visit to the Arena. “It’s fantastic!” exclaimed Gregg. “It’s beautiful, the track’s a work of art. Thousands of visitors get to enjoy Chatsworth’s treasures each year.

Uttoxeter. A spokesperson for the Chesterfield Information Centre said “The standards set by VisitEngland are very high and we are proud to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award.” James Berresford, chief executive of VisitEngland said: "It's been another successful year for our Excellence Awards as we've received hundreds of

applications of an extremely high standard. "That's why all the finalists should be incredibly proud that they've been short-listed against such tough competition. I'd like to congratulate all the finalists who now represent the top five in their category in England and wish them all the very best of luck on awards night."

The Ladyboys of Bangkok

Gatwick already serves 11 destinations within the UK compared with seven at Heathrow. This initiative is designed to ensure that the benefits of a second runway also extends to further improving connectivity between the regions and nations and London. Gatwick’s plans for a second runway will also encourage the growth of regional airports and the development of international services outside London and the South East. Gatwick’s plans aims to strengthen the whole of the UK’s network of airports whereas Heathrow’s plans aim to concentrate international traffic through Heathrow itself, restricting the growth of airports outside the capital. The fund can be used to incentivise airlines to introduce new services. The fund can also be used to provide jointly-agreed marketing support to regional development or other tourism bodies in regional England or Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for new services. Along with the fund, Gatwick will also. • Propose and consult on changes to charges to support the growth of national and regional air services and encourage easier connection between airlines • Support funding applications for new Public Sector Obligation services, and • Work with Government to explore how to safeguard slots for new national and regional services. Launching the fund at a presentation to Prospective Parliamentary Candidates at the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce today, Stewart Wingate, Gatwick CEO, said:

The Ladyboys of Bangkok swished their way into the city and brought their inimitable and fabulous flair to the stage. Derby was lucky to be a pit-stop earlier this month for their aptly named Beauties and the Beats tour, where beautiful women (who also just happen to be men) put on a thoroughly enjoyable performance that lasted for over two hours. With flawless make-up, sparkly dresses and twinkle toes to boot, the Ladyboys’ showcase was an exhilarating and memorable one. The cabaret style performance consisted of chart-topping hits being performed by the svelte and energetic troupe, who sang

and danced their way through the evening and straight into the audience’s heart. Hits by pop princesses ranging from Rihanna to Madonna were performed by equally stunning divas that are the Ladyboys, making for the perfect Friday night out. The show was performed in the Sabai Pavilion, a magnificent magenta marquee erected in Derby’s Market Place. The Ladyboys are celebrities the world over but that didn’t stop them from mingling with their fans and taking photos. Amongst the audience was Lois Allack, a 94 year old resident at the Ivy House Care Home, who has a zest for life and is a big fan of the Ladyboys. The show had a jovial carnival atmosphere and it was easy to forget for two hours that you were actually in a tent in Derby and not some glamorously exotic location. The thought and attention to detail that goes behind the scenes is truly commendable. With the spectators at the forefront of the

Ladyboys’ minds, it feels like each show is tailored just for you. For the UK audience, comedy sketches inspired by one of the UK’s favourite soaps, Coronation Street had the audience howling with laughter. Countless hours went into perfecting the routines and this showed in the polished performances of the Ladyboys. Standout skits included a reenactment of the famous Titanic flying boat scene with help from unsuspecting audience members who provided even more laughs throughout the night. The Ladyboys are a cabaret tour de force and one that we cannot recommend highly enough. Seeing them should be on everyone’s bucket-list.

“Gatwick has always been serious about encouraging the growth and development of a strong network of competing airports around the UK. This fund – and the measures we propose to support it – will improve connectivity to London for those that need it. “Gatwick expansion is best for the UK and regions because it supports not only the growth of connectivity to London, but also more connectivity between all UK airports and international short and long haul destinations. “Expanding Gatwick will provide more competition and choice for passengers all around the UK.” An independent report issued recently by the OECD found that the increased prices an expanded Heathrow would charge, would discourage more flights to other UK airports. The report also said a bigger Heathrow would also ‘diminish’ the chance of new long haul services flying directly out of other UK airports. Gatwick is not only already better connected to the regions than Heathrow, it is also far cheaper for airlines and passengers. Heathrow already has the highest airport charges in the world – in addition to landing and parking charges, Heathrow charges £29.59 per domestic departing passenger compared to Gatwick’s charge of £10.52 per domestic departing passenger.

Adults in the Midlands are living the ‘life of Riley’ as they save more than £1,000 each month by staying at home with their parents Younger generations may be faced with a difficult job market, lower salaries and higher living costs, but many are able to live the ‘life of Riley’ by staying at home with their parents and paying minimal rent. A study by TopCashback.co.uk, released today, reveals parents in the Midlands are charging their adult children an average of £150 per month to live at home and are making their beds, cleaning their rooms and cooking their meals free of charge. With the national average salary around £26,000[1], adults who live at home are left with a very comfortable disposable income of more than £1,000 a month, allowing them to live a lavish lifestyle compared to those who rent traditionally or have bought a home. Whether they’re squirreling away this money as savings or splurging, around three-quarters (73 per cent) of parents believe their children cannot afford to live away from home on their current salary. However, more than half (55 per cent) do believe their children are able to live a more extravagant lifestyle because they live at home.

Luxury ‘extras’ Paying rent, buying food and having a cleaner would typically set residents in the East Midlands back £790.36 and those in the West Midlands £890.36 if they were renting privately. This figure jumps to a staggering £2,141.34 if they were staying in a hotel in the East Midlands and £2,029.34 for those in the West Midlands. Yet those still at home are being offered a luxury life at the expense of the bank of mum and dad for only £150 a month. The research reveals parents in the Midlands are waiting on their children hand and foot as around three-quarters (73 per cent) of parents do their laundry and more than a quarter (27 per cent) clean-up after them, including making their beds and tidying their room. It also seems the days of packed lunches are not over with 18 per cent of parents still making their adult children lunch and an additional 61 per cent cooking their dinner every evening. 82 per cent of parents also buy their children’s groceries.

The owners of Dunston Lodge have made a conscious decision to focus on providing boarding accommodation and grooming for dogs only, not allowing quarantined or rescue dogs, so that your dog feels safe and at home without feeling unsettled by cats or other animals, and not is not mixing with dogs’ whose health/ background is less certain. Your dog is like a member of your family. You want to have peace of mind that you are leaving him/her in the best possible hands. Rest assured that your dog will be enjoying its mini-holiday in purpose-built surroundings to ensure sweet comfort and solid security for the duration of its stay. Pet perks include doggy grooming and doggy pampering days as a standalone service and with a high staff to dog ratio, Dunston Lodge has a loyal client base with repeat customers and even happier dogs. Parents’ guilt

Moving out

When asked why they’re not charging their children rent, the research reveals that parents in the Midlands feel guilty. Around a quarter (23 per cent) say their children cannot afford to move out and 38 per cent state they wouldn’t feel right taking money from their children.

When it comes to fleeing the nest, 58 per cent of parents in the Midlands think it will take their children at least three to five years to be able to save up for a mortgage. Although, 30 per cent of parents say they plan to offer their financial support by giving their children money towards a deposit to buy a house. 60 per cent of parents who have already helped their adult children with a savings pot have given them between just under £5,000.

Although 64 per cent of adults living at home are not charged rent by their parents, they are expected to contribute to household bills in other ways. More than three-quarters (76 per cent) of parents say they make their children earn their keep by carrying out chores including cooking, cleaning and gardening.

Parents rely on rent Half of parents in the Midlands who charge their adult children rent admit to relying on the money to cover living expenses with 58 per cent of those putting the money towards groceries and utility bills. A generous eight per cent say they’re saving up the money to give it back to their children once they’ve moved out. A quarter of parents admit to paying the money into their savings and using the money for home improvements. Half of parents are also aware they could earn more money by renting out their children’s room privately, but still opt to offer their support well into their kids’ adult years. 57 per cent of parents who do not charge their children rent admit they paid to live at home when they were younger with three-quarters contributing at least £100 per month. A third of parents surveyed also say they had moved out of their childhood home by the time they were 19.

Natasha Rachel Smith, Consumer Affairs Editor for TopCashback (www.topcashback. co.uk), says: “Our research shows that as children stay living at home well into their adult years, parents are becoming part of the ‘sandwich generation’, caring for their children and their ageing parents at the same time, which can become a huge financial burden. “Although parents can provide relief to their children by letting them live at home rent free, as well as offering a contribution to their family home children must look into the future and put careful saving plans in place to be able to eventually move out and lift the financial strain off their parents.”

ScottishPower Launches £5m Fund for Customers Facing Financial Hardship ScottishPower has launched a new hardship fund to help some of its customers who are among the most vulnerable in society. The company will commit initial funding of £5.2m over two years, 2015 and 2016. The fund will be used to offer financial support to customers facing wider financial hardship and who are in arrears on their ScottishPower account. It will be available to customers who fit the following criteria: • Have a debt for energy supplied by ScottishPower, having been financially unable to pay their energy bills and so have built up arrears, and • Be a person or household who is suffering from financial distress or hardship, and • Have made contact with a recognised debt advice agency, such as National Debtline, to understand how to manage their income and expenditure, and • Show the ability to manage their current financial situation by making regular payments

for ongoing usage (or agreed instalments) for at least 3 full months. Social Enterprise Direct Ltd has been appointed to act as an independent administrator of the fund. They are based in Glasgow and are part of the Citizens Advice Direct umbrella. From 2017 ScottishPower will add unclaimed credits from customers to the hardship fund, once they are 2 years old. This will not alter ScottishPower’s clear commitment to refund credit to existing and previous customers. ScottishPower has been returning credits to customers, using tracing agencies and other means to reunite customers with tens of millions of pounds. However, in some cases it is not possible to credits to customers. Neil Clitheroe, ScottishPower CEO of retail and generation, said: “No matter how hard we try, sometimes we simply cannot reunite customers with their unclaimed credits when they switch. We think that it makes sense to use this money

in a hardship fund to provide assistance for some of our most vulnerable customers in these tough economic times.” The hardship fund will award grants between £100 and £3,000. Each application will be dealt with on a case by case basis, with consideration given to budget availability within the Fund at any given time. Any award will be appropriate to the size of the debt owed and the individual circumstances and at the discretion of the fund. Applications for a grant can be made either via a form (which can be downloaded or requested) which is signed by the customer, or via a recorded telephone call, or confirmed with a declaration for online applications. More details can be found at www.scottishpower.co.uk/hardship-fund What are Unclaimed Credits? • Unclaimed credits can materialise in two main ways. This may include when a customer moves home without providing new contact details for the final bill. This final bill may have a debt or

a credit. Typically, the cost of debt written off by ScottishPower is 10 times larger than credits. • In addition, customers who move home or switch and do not provide final actual meter readings may have a debt or a credit. Without a final meter reading there is no way of calculating an accurate final bill. An estimated bill would be produced, and efforts would be made to contact the customer to confirm its accuracy. • Through the use of tracing agencies and cleansing accounts on billing system, over the last 12 months, ScottishPower has returned an additional £15 million to more than 300,000 customers. This is above normal business as usual processes, which includes 90% of customers who have changed supplier receiving their refund automatically, usually within 14 days of their final bill. Any customer can claim their valid credit balance at any point in time, no matter how old. • ScottishPower is also now part of the industry campaign initiative to reunite former customers with unclaimed credits called “MyEnergyCredit”.

BROMFORD AWARDS £5M GAS CONTRACT TO IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE Bromford has awarded two new contracts to J Tomlinson and Liberty Gas to provide gas repairs, maintenance and servicing to over 10,000 customers. Around £1m of new installations will be delivered as the social enterprise continues to invest in new technology to improve the efficiency of customers’ homes. Taking a fresh look at service delivery, areas will now be split with J Tomlinson covering the North East and Liberty Gas the North West.* Jason Holder, head of property maintenance at Bromford said: “We have done this to minimise the geography any one contractor has to cover with the aim of further improving our customer service. We are excited to be working with a new contractor in Liberty Gas and extending our current successful contract with J Tomlinson who we have worked with previously.” Following the end of a five-year contract with PH Jones, the two contractors have been appointed for the next four years after a rigorous tender process. Both demonstrated a track record of delivering an excellent service and working in partnership to look for opportunities to further improve services for customers. The evaluation considered both the cost and quality of the tender submissions to ensure the right value for money balance was reached. Shaun Maclean, Liberty Group chairman said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Bromford on this contract to deliver the best service to customers who provide the purpose of all we do. They are the constant focus of our attention.” Steve Kirkland, maintenance managing director at T J Tomlinson said: “We are delighted and proud to have been awarded a further contract with our client and partner Bromford. Over the many years we have worked with Bromford we have built up a relationship based on delivering a high quality service to their residents. Looking forward to this contract we are excited to be introducing the new mobile printing technology. This innovative technology delivers a more streamlined process, enhancing customer satisfaction and providing efficiency savings to our client.”

The UK's wedding industry is worth more than £10 billion a year which makes it an expensive and often stressful occasion for which to plan. It should go without saying that planning is key… from sorting out everything from the engagement announcement to the big day and the honeymoon could take many months or planning…or even more. One of the most important considerations is the location that the wedding itself and a lot of thought and planning must go into getting the right venue. According to the weddings website Hitched W.I.F.E. here are some top tips for choosing the perfect wedding venue: • • • •

Ensure it fits within your wedding budget View the venue to make sure it will fit the capacity of your guest list Sign a contract once you’re happy with the terms and conditions being offered Don’t hand over a deposit unless you’re 100% sure of your wedding date and the details of your day and finally Be sure that you are both happy and

comfortable with your chosen wedding venue choice The same website also revealed that when it comes to UK weddings, we are a nation of traditionalists with 78 per cent of brides surveyed saying they would follow the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” tradition for their big day. It is thought that wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue will bring good luck to the bearer and can include anything and everything from jewellery to headwear, an old wedding dress, a blue garter and more! The 2014 Wedding Report from confetti.co.uk showed that the top three venues were churches, hotels and castles followed by registry office weddings and then weddings abroad. The average age for a groom is 30 with the bride 28 and, on average, UK couples will have spent 2.5 years living together before tying the knot. The most popular wedding tradition is cutting the cake and the most popular honeymoon destinations are Mexico, Mauritius and the Maldives.

When it comes to a wide range of interesting places to eat out, then Derby has quite a lot to boast about these days. In fact according to the TasteDerby website, the city is constantly scaling new heights for offering outstanding food & drink hospitality. This is evidenced by the city’s annual Food And Drink Awards Ceremony where last year saw over 1,400 nominations which were then narrowed down to just 21 finalists across nine categories. The prestigious event recognises Derby’s finest restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes, in categories including Best Newcomer, Best Out of Town, and the coveted Restaurant of the Year. At the most recent event, Marketing Derby’s John Forkin praised the vibrance of the restaurant sector in the region. He said: "The food and drink sector in Derby goes from strength to strength, reflected in the fact that, of the 21 finalists, excluding the Best Customer Service Award, only three were trading when we launched the Derby Food and Drink Awards five years ago."

In short Derby and the surrounding area offers a diverse array of restaurants to suit every possible taste and budget and the range of different establishments and types of cuisine is increasing all the time. There is everything from fine-dining establishments, traditional pub menus, established restaurant chains and many individual establishments where the focus is on the quality of the food served and the experience of their guests. Whether it is traditional fish and chips, British, American, Continental, Indian, Chinese, Italian or more then Derby has it all. There is also a range of venues from traditional country pubs, traditional tea rooms, high-end establishments, trendy city bars and small familyrun businesses, to name but a few. There has never been a better time to enjoy Derby’s diverse restaurant culture and it looks like things are going to only get better as news spreads that this is a great area for eating out.

Insolvency Practitioners

With offices across the Midlands CBA specialise in insolvency and business recovery. Licensed Insolvency practitioners with over 50 years experience we offer free, high quality advice to help you retain control of your business. Plan Ahead Whether your business is a sole trader, partnership or limited company it is crucial to take professional advice at an early stage to maximise the options available. Business Recovery By taking a positive, professional approach to tackling the issues facing your business our team of business recovery specialists will work with you to tailor-make a solution to meet your business and personal needs. Insolvency CBA can set you on the right track to avoid insolvency, however should the situation require this course of action CBA can be relied on to take you through the process as smoothly as possible. Your Responsibility Be aware that the law places great responsibility on directors of companies facing insolvency breach of which can ultimately result in personal liability for the directors. This liability can be avoided by seeking advice from licensed professionals as soon as the problems arise. Leave it too late and formal insolvency may be inevitable and could be forced upon you by a creditor.

Free Advice If you have concerns about your business do not hesitate to contact us for free professional advice. The sooner you act the more options you may have.

Business Recovery The primary objective for CBA is to put you on the road to recovery. Outlined below are the three main mechanisms to continue trading. However in order to give you the best possible advice, for your particular circumstances, please contact us to make use of our knowledge and experience with a free consultation. Informal arrangement As the title suggests the company could consider writing to all its creditors to see if a mutually acceptable agreement can be reached regarding payments. It is advisable to include a timetable of when payments will be made. Company voluntary arrangement (CVA) This is a formal, legally binding, version of the arrangement described above. The directors, with our assistance, need to prepare proposals to deal with the company’s debt over a period of time. These proposals are lodged in Court and voted upon by creditors and if 75% of creditors by value who vote accept the proposals then they are approved, and all other creditors are also bound by the terms of the proposals. The CVA is supervised by a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner whose job is to monitor the arrangement to ensure that the company complies with its terms, collect the funds due in to the CVA, agree the claims of creditors and distribute the funds to them.

Timely intervention... Best advice

Administration

Creditors Voluntary Liquidation

This is a protective procedure whereby a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner is appointed Administrator. During Administration nobody may take any legal action against the company, providing the company with ‘breathing space’ from this pressure, which allows the affairs to be managed in a controlled and orderly fashion.

In spite of the title, it is the directors of the company who take the decision to cease trading and seek the advice of an insolvency practitioner.

Once in control of the business the administrator can continue to trade the business whilst restructuring it, sell the business as a going concern, propose that the company enters a CVA or cease trading and sell the assets. First Step If you have concerns about your business do not hesitate to contact us for free professional advice. The sooner you act the more options you may have.

Company Liquidation The term “liquidation” is confusing to most and yet it is perhaps the most widely used process in the UK corporate market today. To liquidate a company is to formally wind up its business affairs where the assets and liabilities belong to the company as opposed to any individual shareholder or director. We outline below the three main categories of liquidation.

By taking advice at an early stage directors can explore alternative solutions but once they have concluded that the company cannot meet its debts and therefore must cease trading the company is placed into liquidation. It is generally accepted that when a company’s liabilities exceed its assets or it fails to pay its debts, when due, or there is no viable market for the company’s products then liquidation is the only exit route. However closure also brings new beginnings and the fact that the directors have placed the company into liquidation does not prevent them from starting up a new company. Compulsory Liquidation In this case the procedure commences with a petition to the courts to wind up the company. The most common forms of petition are initiated by the directors of the company, the shareholders of the company or a creditor of the company.

Members Voluntary Liquidation

In the initial stages an officer of the court (The Official Receiver) is appointed. Upon the granting of the order by the court the Official Receiver takes up office. Creditors must be notified of this fact within 12 weeks and must also be told whether the Official Receiver deems it necessary to call a meeting of the company’s creditors.

A members’ voluntary liquidation is initiated by the shareholders of a company which can pay its agreed debts, plus statutory interest, in full within twelve months.

It is usual that a creditors’ meeting is called if the company has assets requiring disposal, at which point creditors may nominate an outside practitioner to act as liquidator.

Winding up a company in this way may be entered into for a variety of reasons, particularly if the company no longer has any useful purpose and has surplus assets which must be distributed to the creditors and then to the shareholders of the company.

Restaurant Review

MOJA RESTAURANT & TAKEAWAY

Having opened its doors only last month, Moja is the self-proclaimed (and totally true might I add) finest Bangladeshi and Indian Restaurant and Takeaway in Matlock and beyond. The restaurant has already built up a loyal clientele and upon entering the building, you already know you’re in for a treat. The décor is stylish and cool, having taken over three months for it to reach its beautiful state (the standout feature of the water-wall makes even being in the restaurant an absolute pleasure). I could have gone on happily standing there for a while, but the waiting staff were attentive and courteous, meaning we were seated within minutes of arriving. I started with the King Prawn Butterfly coated in seasoned breadcrumbs. The prawn was tender and melt in your mouth and I finished with the Jal Jul, a hot chicken dish cooked with a base of spring onions and red hot chilli. I like dishes with heat; what I dig even more, is when you can actually taste the spices in the dish. The Jal Jul is no different, where a complex layering of ginger, garlic, fragrant cardamom and cinnamon makes every mouthful so special. My dining partner had the delicately spiced Mix Kebab starter that included buttery onion bhaji, moreish sheek kebab and heavenly chicken tikka. He was even happier with his main, which was the Chef’s Special Lamb Jalfrezi. Cooked with piquant green chillis in a thick sauce, it was mopped up by the very substantial Tandoori Roti that came thoughtfully nestled in a foil wrapper to conserve the heat. It is little touches like these that make Moja stand head and shoulders above any of the Indian restaurants out there. Sundries are often relegated to nondescript sidedishes and in some restaurants, can make for boringly bland food. Not so at Moja, whose Pilau Rice is a revelation. It’s the best I’ve ever had. Seriously. Each perfectly cooked grain of rice falls from fork to mouth in a gentle flurry and I was almost disappointed when I had polished off my generous portion.

PRICES

The restaurant was busy with a diverse crowd, from couples on date-night, to various large parties celebrating a get-together and a birthday too. Moja supports the BYOB ethos and with no corkage fee, an evening out at Moja will not cost you the earth, despite it being nothing short of a five star experience. When we left, I couldn’t help notice that other restaurants on the same street were nowhere nearly as busy as Moja. And I think I know why. Moja has that winning combination of excellent home-cooked food, incomparable customer service and a soothing water-wall that you wish you could take home. Get yourself down to Moja, where a warm welcome, delicious curry and top drawer service is guaranteed. Children’s clothes designer Alice Cook has always loved sewing which began as a means of escape from the boredom of high school and has turned out to be the basis of a wonderful career. Alice took a BTEC in fashion textiles and went on to complete a degree in fashion studies. She never felt totally comfortable designing womenswear and when she gave birth to daughter Charlotte Rose in 2013 she soon

discovered that her young daughter did not like pink and much preferred yellow clothes. When she found it extremely difficult to find girls clothes in anything but pink, this was all the inspiration Alice needed to launch Alice Cook Designs. She said: “On the rare occasion that I could find non-pink clothes for girls the selection was so limited so I decided to put my sewing skills to good use. “With Alice Cook Designs my aim is to make fun, colourful, unisex childrens clothing for newborn to 10 years old. Perfect for adventures and imagination.” Things are going well for Alice, her business is supported by the Prince's Trust and her customers love the fact that children’s clothing has become far more colourful. Simon Martin Apprentice Cabinet Maker. Teenager Simon Martin is following in a family tradition as he gets to grips with his NVQ Level 2 course in cabinet making. Simon’s dad is a fully qualified cabinet maker and the 18-year-old apprentice wants to learn the skills and techniques necessary to become just as good. Father and son both work for Edsons in Nottingham, a family-owned business specialising in bespoke joinery that has been trading continuously since 1885. According to the company website “All Edsons staff are time-served craftsmen with many years experience of producing high quality joinery and cabinetwork.” Simon, from Kimberley, Nottinghamshire, said the high standards was something he was told he needed to produce from day one. He said: “There is absolutely no getting away with producing sub-standard work here at all because it simply won’t be tolerated. “Even the slightest thing wrong and the work comes back to you with an explanation as to why it was not suitable and what needs to be done to put it right.” Simon started working for Edsons in July last year as an apprentice cabinet maker and has been working on his NVQ at Web’s Training since September, where he spends every Monday learning new skills or polishing up existing ones. He always knew he wanted to work with his hands and was making items out of wood for his family and friends since he was a boy. Simon added: “We have a workshop in our garage and I would spend as much time there as I could. “I have always been practical and I would make things such as cat boxes and dog houses just for the pure enjoyment I would get from it.” Now he gets paid for what he enjoys doing and loves the fact that there is such a huge emphasis on getting things as perfect as they can be. He said: “The furniture we produce here is really high quality and it is great to be involved in making items which look so great. “I get a great deal of pleasure in getting things precisely right and if I get to be as good as my dad one day then I will be very happy indeed.” At Webs Training Simon gets on well with the fellow apprentices and staff and his first project is to make a box to hold watches. This project will test the apprentices’ skills in design and their ability to turn the designs into a finished product which meets the required specifications and standards. Simon said the training he received at Webs was “good and varied” and said the instructors were always willing to help. When he is not working he enjoys cycling and takes part in events where participants have to cover 100 miles in just one day.

Chester-based firm Great Bear Distribution will move into a purpose-built warehouse and offices – Markham’s biggest development to date bringing the largest number of jobs in a single development. Established in 1994, Great Bear Distribution

operates in 30 locations nationwide providing warehousing and distribution for clients such as Sainsbury’s, BMW, and Unilever. Glenn Lindfield CEO of Great Bear Distribution said: “Bringing our business to Markham Vale is a positive step forward for our company. “The site is exactly what we’ve been looking for with tailor-made facilities in a prime location just off Junction 29A of the M1 motorway, providing easy access to our customers and other bases across the UK. “We look forward to becoming part of Markham’s growing network of companies.” Work to build the 479,285 sq. ft. development is expected to start in autumn this year, and reach completion in spring 2016. The premises are situated next to Markham Vale’s Environment Centre and will be built by the county

council’s private sector property partner, Henry Boot Developments on the site off Junction 29A of the M1 motorway. Peter Storey, Head of Markham Vale said: “Great Bear Distribution will be a real feather in Markham’s cap bringing 400 jobs which is great news for the Derbyshire economy. “Markham’s fantastic transport links next to the M1 make the perfect choice for a wide range of businesses and we look forward to welcoming even more companies to the site this year and in the future.” Existing occupiers at Markham Vale include, AW Repair Group, MSE Hiller, Squadron Medical, Industrial Ancillaries, Andrew Page, Holdsworth Foods and Ready Egg Products. Ben Ward at Henry Boot Developments said: “We are delighted to secure such a ground-breaking

deal with Great Bear Distribution. “This last year has been exceptional for Markham Vale with six major deals and a huge amount of development activity. “We have worked very closely with Great Bear Distribution in designing this bespoke facility to meet their exact requirements and many of the features are at the forefront of technology.” The regeneration site is one of the UK’s biggest Enterprise Zone Developments with the final phase, which is a further 100 acres currently being prepared for development using a £14.2m Government grant awarded through the Sheffield City Region’s Enterprise Zone. Businesses interested in the opportunities at Markham Vale can contact the Environment Centre’s manager, Trudi Saxton on 01246 826 000 for more information.

Ich bin spotless Wow, I just had a really great holiday I was panicking beforehand that I had too much work to do, but I informed all my current clients, got stressed and organised all at the same time and then off we went. . . .

We did drive all the way there! BUT . . . (the sat nav behaved itself impeccably – 512 km from Zeebrugge to my sister’s door completely hitch free. 6 hours: 2 toilet stops, one BBC CD of Toms . . . on Good Friday we sailed away with P&O midnight Garden, some great CD compilations, ferries, for one of the most relaxing breaks I have plenty of crisps, sandwiches and snacks and had (yes really). only the very mildest of “are we nearly there yet” My sister recently relocated to Germany . . . . Then it was a pretty perfect journey.) “Oh, thats quite a way then” – I hear you say 8. we just go with the flow, relax and do very little well actually, considering that prior to that she had lived in South Korea for five years then this new location meant that is was now feasible and affordable to visit her. It is true to say that whenever I get stressed, it is often plainly displayed on my face up by a particular brand of spots! So they come and go depending on the amount of times I have had to shout at the boys, or stay up late on a design job, or feel extra tired . . . or whatever. So a 7 night visit with family might be tempting fate – apparently (my sister informs me) there is a 72 hour tolerance rule. However during the trip to Germany, it was apparent how de-stressed I really was by the lack of any spots whatsoever. So I can put that down to the following positives for our perfect break: 1. Nice house big enough to accommodate 4 extra people

How’s the weather where you are? I think it’s amazing how we talk about the British weather endlessly, it’s one of our favourite topics of conversation, aside from the election but I’m not going to go there! We look for sunny days, find stormy days and just have to cope with rainy days – but why, if I’m a conflict resolution professional, am I talking about the weather? I’m glad you ask, sometimes conflict is a bit like our weather unpredictable, the topic of conversation and with too many gloomy days for those caught up in the latest dispute. Conflict in the workplace is a cause of high absence, low productivity, high turnover, low engagement and motivation and the solution is to start creating opportunities to resolve difficulties earlier.

How we help We help our clients create calm out of chaos providing much needed support with our hands on practical support services. We can’t predict the weather but we can train managers to handle employee related storms, we can independently investigate situations, support you with decisions or mediate in disputes, and we aim to bring sunnier days into your workplace! To bring sunny days to a workplace near you call 079 0562 7439 to talk through your storms or to arrange a no-obligation company visit or email letstalk@letstalkconsultancy.co.uk Bye for now, Lindsey-Jayne Trueman, Chartered MCIPD, PGDip and Accredited Workplace and Community Mediator.

after all:

Thank you very much to my sister and brother-inlaw, because . . . . Staying with family means: 2. they have already done the food shopping

9. no washing, no ironing, no cooking, no emails Negatives: -1. A tiny bit of friction, when me and my sister get together for a few days – but soon forgotten for the greater good. -2. sleeping on an air bed is not as comfy as your own bed. but you get to a point where you are so tired that you can sleep anywhere anyway. -3. We took lots of warm clothes, and I laughed at my husband when he suggested sun-cream and hats! BUT then we got the most fantastic weather so we got mildly sun burnt. Oops – thats not really a negative is it – it was like being on the med! So a couple more positives 10. lots of sitting in the sunshine, eating ice cream, and pic-nics. 11. and a couple of restaurant meals out too (a rare treat for us). So far the stress spots have not returned, and the mild sun burn has browned off for a healthy glow.

However I had to do my own food shopping, and the time seems to be disappearing to do the 3. they do the cooking – including making picnics. chores. (coz if you try to help you don’t know where but all good things and all that, and I feel ready to anything is, and then you do it all wrong anyway get back into the swing of things. so best to avoid the heat by keeping out of the kitchen – OMG this is an old one! ) Although its taken rather longer than normal to type this blog – 4. your kids are entertained by their kids too much sunshine out of the window maybe? 5. and they behave better coz is it sunny near you? A. they do what Aunty tells them, and B. you are less strict coz its holiday is it time to plan your own trip and de-stress the distress? 6. they plan the days out, coz they know the area better Thanks for reading 7. they have 2 cars – so they do all the driving.

DEVELOPER HAPPY TO STAY IN AMBITIOUS CITY A developer in the commercial sector says it is happy to stay in Derby, a city with ‘great ambition’, and has no plans to sell on the property it has developed over the past fifteen years. Nurton Developments purchased the Cardinal Square office block, close to the A52 in Nottingham Road, from Minerva in 2000. An agreement was reached with tenant Allied Domecq to surrender their 25% lease, which was unoccupied, and Nurton spent £3 million on refurbishing the 115,000 sq ft complex. Rupert Young, development director for Nurton, was keen to praise the city and the council. “We feel Derby is a city showing great ambition, trying to identify where its core strengths lie,” he said. “John Forkin is doing an excellent job at Marketing Derby and Derby City Council are trying to build and expand around the city’s strengths.” Nurton’s ownership of Cardinal Square has been through the period of severe economic downturn, but within a year of the refurbishment, they were able to let half of the building. They have come through the recession and are encouraged by future prospects. "The letting market went quiet, but our pragmatic approach to business, how we structure deals and listen to our prospective tenants wishes, on a one-to-one basis, enabled us to let around 60,000 sq ft to the NHS in two phases.” Nurton’s investment included improving the external façade, installing new lifts and toilets, creating a show suite and refurbishing the two reception areas of what is one of the most distinctive buildings in the city. With other tenants in the building Mr Young is confident that Nurton will be able to let the remaining 19,000 sq ft floor space."We have three floors to let

in the block known as South Point and half of one of these floors is currently under offer,” he said. "We are confident we will be able to let the remaining 19,000 sq ft in the coming months." Mr Young added that he has seen a shift in the attitude of the council over recent years. “Whilst the city council still support the out-of-town developments, such as the new Infinity Park, they realise that if they encourage business into the city, it brings footfall to the city and that helps other businesses: the retailers and the restaurants.” The recent Centre for City’s Survey showed Derby

“WE FEEL DERBY IS A CITY SHOWING GREAT AMBITION, TRYING TO IDENTIFY WHERE ITS CORE STRENGTHS LIE” ranked fifth in the UK for average wages because of the hi-tech industries based here. Mr Young said this was one reason for Westfield choosing to build their large shopping centre (now Intu) here, and the reason why investors would continue to look towards Derby. Nurton want to remain in the city and be part of that future growth. "Derby has been good to us and Cardinal Square is producing an attractive annual return. We are under no pressure to sell to realise a profit," said Mr Young. “Derby is performing well as a city and there is opportunity to build further value, so we are going to staying.”

HR ASPECTS OF PENSIONS AUTOENROLMENT Employers must auto-enrol their eligible and entitled employees into a pension scheme. There are some template documents for employers to use on the Pensions Regulator website and your pension scheme provider may let you have some but just using these may not be enough to protect your business from Employment Tribunal claims for backdated unpaid pension contributions in the future. We predict that pension claims will become the next “PPI claim” call, with call centres asking people whether they have worked for a company in the last 3 years and if they were automatically enrolled in a pension scheme when they should have been. We can help you to identify the worker status of the people on your books and advise on the procedure and documentation necessary to protect your business. Residents will find it easier to use services and get support from Erewash Credit Union thanks to a £44,000 grant from Derbyshire County Council. The funding has allowed the credit union to develop a new website to improve access by allowing customers to sign up and manage their savings and loans accounts online. Erewash Credit Union (ECU) has more than 3,000 members across the county and nearly 1,000 are already using the improved online facilities. Derbyshire County Council’s Strategic Director for Health and Communities David Lowe said: “Erewash Credit Union provides a valuable service to residents who may be struggling with low income and debt or just looking for an alternative to traditional banking. “We’re very pleased to be able to help them develop a new website and online services to encourage more residents to sign up by making it easier for them to register, make payments and manage accounts online.”

Erewash Credit Union operates under a ‘common bond’ which means it can provide services to anyone who lives or works in Derbyshire regardless of whether they live near a branch. Its main base is in Ilkeston and it also has branches in Alfreton, Derby, Long Eaton and Ripley – with plans to open advice points across the Derbyshire Dales soon. ECU General Manager Sara Dinsdale said: ‘We’re delighted that we’re now able to offer services that are more accessible to anyone living or working in Derbyshire who is looking for a real alternative to other financial services. “Hopefully being more accessible we can actively compete with those financial institutions that charge extortionate interest rates which can very quickly get people into more money trouble. “Also, contrary to what some people may think we’re not a ‘poor man’s bank’ and offer great loan rates and a return on savings. I would urge local

people to check out our new website to see how we could save them money.” Derbyshire County Council has provided £360,000 support funding to help local credit unions offer safe instant access loans available to more residents and protect those who may be tempted by payday loan companies or other high-risk borrowing. The authority is also encouraging its employees to sign up and support credit unions as part of its work to tackle poverty and support people struggling with debt and low incomes. It has set up a payroll system which allows staff to have any amount from £1 upwards deducted straight from their monthly pay and paid into a Derbyshire credit union. #VOOM: Over 1,000 businesses have entered Pitch to Rich Entrepreneurialism and innovation are booming in Britain as over 1,000 businesses have entered #voom:Pitch to Rich 2015, a competition to win a share of an unprecedented £1million accelerator prize fund from Virgin Media Business. The prize is part of Virgin Media Business’ nationwide competition, launched in association with LinkedIn in March 2015. Prizes will be awarded to three of the country’s most exciting business ideas following a live pitch to Sir Richard Branson and a hand-picked panel of judges in June. The entry numbers soared past 1,000 today (Tues) as entrepreneurs vie for votes and publicity ahead of the closing date of May 5. In addition, over 100,000 votes have been cast by members of the public for their favourite entries. Entries have come in from all over the country, from a diverse range of businesses that include a support business

for victims of bike theft, a postsurgery bra manufacturer, a cause marketing platform and an organisation that provides fun science activities for children. Peter Kelly, Managing Director, Virgin Media Business, said: “Every strong economy needs game-changing entrepreneurs to confront their fear and create a business that will truly make someone’s life better. “We knew that this competition would attract those businesses but we are truly overwhelmed by the quality of the entries, the passion of our entrants and the true innovation that they are demonstrating. “We’re all looking forward to seeing the shortlist soon, but I would encourage everyone to get involved and vote for their favourites.” Entries can be made until May 5 at http://www. virginmediabusiness.co.uk/ pitch-to-rich/ where you can also vote for your favourite business ideas.

The Tax Benefits Of Thinking Inside ‘The Box’ – The Patent Box. by Pete Miller of The Miller Partnership Is your company making trading profits through exploiting patents? If it is, have you considered the amount of tax relief you could be saving with the Patent Box? Introduced on April 1 2013 to encourage UK innovation and entrepreneurship, the Patent Box is a relief which will, in due course, allow companies who own patents to cut their overall Corporation Tax rate substantially. It is being phased in over five years from April 1 2013, with relief standing at 60% of the maximum in FY 2013, at 70% in FY 2014 and reaching 100 % in FY 2017.

Marmite Contracts? by Sarah Daniels, Managing Director, HR Response Ltd Zero hour contracts are a bit like marmite… you either love them or hate them! As I write, our politicians are in full swing of a General Election campaign, and the debate regarding zero hour contracts has reared its head again. As a HR Consultant I have come across businesses where these contracts are not being used correctly, and other businesses that have skilfully embraced the flexibility zero hour contracts bring. For example; domiciliary care organisations may not be able to guarantee working hours for all staff as rotas for home visits change at short notice. They rely on casual staff to fill gaps created by the changing needs of their clients. Zero hour contracts can also be good for students, as they provide the flexibility needed for working around lectures and work placements, helping them to support themselves financially through their studies. Unfortunately, there are organisations that do

not apply a holiday entitlement calculation, or significantly reduce other benefits for those on zero hour contracts compared to their full time staff. This is clearly disadvantaging those who would probably prefer to be on a zero hour contract. There are many pros and cons to the zero hour contract and its possible the benefit of the flexibility of these contracts has been lost along the way. There would seem to be a case for keeping them available to both employers and employees, but they must be applied fairly. So what’s the answer? I believe sensible, realistic guidance and training in the use of zero hour contracts is an absolute must. As employers, we have a duty to protect our employees from exploitation or unfair treatment, but at the same time deliver the working patterns our businesses need in order to thrive and grow. www.hrresponse.co.uk

So, if you or your client is a trading company with profits from exploiting patents after March 31 2013, you might want to consider what Patent Box relief could do for you. First, you’ll need to ask the following questions:

We’ve also been working with our clients to ensure that they will continue to qualify for relief through the Patent Box should their business be affected by group reorganisations, sales or mergers, for example. Patent Box is particularly generous in that even if you don’t yet hold a patent, you could benefit by applying for one now. The notional relief available starts to accumulate from the time the patent is applied for and can be claimed once the patent is granted. And applying for a patent might not be as expensive as you might think. To find out more, please contact The Miller Partnership by phone or email right away for a free consultation. If you’re eligible for the Patent Box we’ll do the necessary tax computations. But remember, this relief is only available from the time you apply for the patent, so don’t delay.

• Does the company own patents which it exploits as part of its trade? • Or does the company exploit someone else’s patent under an exclusive licence? • Does the company have intellectual property that could be patented so that patent box relief can be claimed? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’, the Patent Box may well be available to you. In recent months I’ve received many inquiries from companies and/or their accountants in sectors as diverse as home interiors and civil engineering – and most stand to benefit substantially from this welcome tax relief.

Motoring www.derbyshireguardian.co.uk

This Months Car Reviews by Syd Taylor

Isuzu Yukon Extended Cab As any historian of motor power transportation will tell you, the pick-up truck originates from the hard-headed practicality of our transatlantic cousins and their transportation needs. These days, of course, we live in a transglobal world of unfettered trade and the pick-up truck dna has spread across continents. Even so it's not remarkable that a Japanese manufacturer should genuflect in the direction of the

rugged pioneer nation that came up with the idea in the first place. Accordingly, I have before me an Isuzu Yukon Extended Cab. - an incarnation of the tough workhorse likely to answer the 'call of the wild'. Lucky owners need not fear getting stranded on the Steppes, for this burly beast of burden has bear-like qualities which it serves up with nary a grizzle - and it's guaranteed for five years. (Considering the hard

life these Isuzus will probably lead, that is a considerable show of confidence). It's a real workhorse with a robust six speed manual gearbox and dual range 4wd that is selectable electronically. Nothing is sacrificed in terms of comfort for driver and front seat passenger and there's air conditioning, cruise control and a posh sound system. Two occasional rear seats are accessed via rearhinged half width doors to give '2plus2' accommodation - so this is not a school run special. The shorter cab allows a very useful load-bed length of 1795mm as opposed to the more 'lifestyle orientated' double cab load bed of 1485mm. The test vehicle came with an easy to use sliding load bed cover which is ideal when carrying goods of value that need to be locked out of sight. All the while Isuzu quality engineering imparts a bullet proof sense of invulnerability in a versatile vehicle that will cope with all demands, while maintaining a poised dignity. It doesn't need to strut its stuff because the stuff it's made of says it all. Hardy and versatile and testimony

to terrific task potential it can tow up to 3.5 tonnes thanks to the new 2.5 163ps twin turbo diesel with its tugboat torque and r e a s o n a bl e real world economy of about 38/40mpg overall. And all this at a good price of ÂŁ19,249 (plus VAT). In short it's the epitome of the hardworking artisans dream: a vehicle so crammed full of virtues that you'd be hard pushed not to sing its praises. On the road it commands respect and it respects the commands of the driver in a most rewarding way. I found myself imagining I was behind the wheel of a luxury car - so refined are some of the attributes Isuzu has bestowed upon it. While Yukon as a region is more famous for ice than laurel leaves,

Vauxhall Corsa SRi 1.3 CDTi (95PS) 5 Door Over the years Vauxhall have acquired an enviable reputation for serving the customer with cars for today that are branded ineluctably with the prestige and heritage that adhere to the golden pedigree of the illustrious name. The Vauxhall brand is much more than that. It represents a tacit acknowledgement that while the best things in life might not be free, a Vauxhall motorist is freed from all worry when he or she turns the key to the new Corsa SRi diesel - forging a virtual link that connects the past to the present and on to the future.

The Corsa SRi diesel 5 door hatchback oozes sporty charm - combining as it does, an accommodating interior with room for four adults in comfort, a decent sized boot, sports front seats, cruise control and a posh colour touchscreen. Black alloy wheels set off the smart styling and hint at the astonishing road manners and performance to come, to a degree that positions it at the very pinnacle of its class. I was taken by the way it does everything extremely well: nothing has been left to chance making it

a daily driver that's as reliable as the sunrise, leaves rivals in the shade and doesn't crow about its virtues. In keeping with current trends towards corporate identity, this Vauxhall asserts a clean modern look in a way that remains consistent with the conventions of the Vauxhall brand. The ÂŁ14,945 5 door 1.3, 95PS diesel variant on test proved stonkingly torquey (despite what you might have read elsewhere), capable of tackling a thousand test hills at once, fast enough at near 115mph for all but Rodney Rocket from round the corner - and pulling well in all road conditions. Motorway cruising is quite effortless and relaxed and in-town nippiness is a joy. Importantly it does not tug on the wallet. At a claimed 'in your dreams' 85.6mpg and a 'real world' easy 68/69mpg it has the virtues of thrift with all the forthrightness of the evangelical. High praise indeed - but then with the Vauxhall product one knows one is at the high altar of motor manufacturing.

A natural comparison is with its great rival, the Ford Fiesta. While the Ford is an absolute drivers delight that makes most others in the class seem 'dim bulbs', it can only be said that the Corsa - while riding and handling beautifully - is not quite such fun to drive. But.... if the Ford is the acrobatic champion the Corsa is the sturdier of the two and far more economical. A car like this just keeps on giving. I'd find space for one of these 'go anywhere' hatchbacks in my collection any day. Motorists looking for a good car for twenty first century motoring needs could do worse than succumb to the painless profitability of Corsa ownership. So - with the road stretching ahead, I revelled in the 'rightness' of the car's responsiveness. It fits like a glove, punches above its weight and dallies not a moment at the fuel pumps. Unlike rivals which can resemble mice on steroids, this Corsa buckles down to business in the manner of the 'real deal'.

the Yukon as a vehicle wins the laurels every time. As charming as a friendly pack of huskies and as well-mannered as a curates pet hedgehog, this Yukon bristles with user-friendly utilities of all kinds. You can do long motorway journeys where the low revving diesel is fairly quiet and smooth and you can tackle twisty roads, taking confidence from the good handling. If you really want to use the performance I suggest you could 'out gun' most small hatchbacks. Ride comfort too is better than

you expect and the slow 'rocking and rolling' motion is a welcome change from the jarring ride of smaller vehicles. Don't be deceived, we're talking about a pedigree workhorse here not some survival-addled monkey from the fashion catalogues. It's the 'real deal' - not a reality show. But no matter how one carpets this pickup with praise, its magic resides in the pure practicality that is a tonic for hard workers everywhere.

Bentley Flying Spur V8 that drives through a seamless eight speed transmission - you can reach near 190mph, yet this four-wheel-drive, 2.5 tonne saloon can return 25mpg should you wish to tootle along regally. 488lb/ft of torque though, lets the driver of this supersonic sculpture tap a magic seam of pleasure and surge forward in a tidal flood as if Mercury himself had reached down from above and given a push. Huge power and great tranquility can share the same moment. With silken muscle and a chassis renowned for its balance, poise and wonderful ride, the Spur floats like a butterfly on its air

When the twenty first century has receded into memory and our happy descendants of future millennia look back on venerable moments of historic import, they would surely rank the automobile alongside whatever remains of Stonehenge. Among the thousands of automobiles, one princely carriage in particular must stand apart from the crowd. Monolithic in magnificent resonance, peerless in poise and indubitably proud and dignified - the Bentley is more than a car. The brand 'Bentley' and the appellation 'Flying Spur' have long represented a prestigious

marriage in the car stakes. We're talking here of machines that ooze the sort of quality that only 'proper' money can buy. Having said that, no car comes close to the £136,000 ultra-luxurious Flying Spur saloon in providing pleasure per pound. Doubtless there are writers better qualified than I to muster the genuine magic embraced by this Bentley, but for the moment you'll have to make do with me. For one thing I've never met even distant members of W.O. Bentley's family and for another my dad never raced against Woolf Barnato. Clearly I've never had the opportunity to hear from them

suspension and stings like...a supercharged bee: almost absurd in its contradictions as you journey down the long highway to perfection. You don't just drive a Bentley - you become as one with the machine in a virtuous amalgam of mile-devouring magnificence. The Flying Spur represents an edifice to engineering ex c e l l e n c e which will weather time and space together.

When the last glimmering star goes out in the galaxy this car surely still will shine. Only a bunny-bound green lettuce would have the delusional temerity to criticise a Bentley.

what makes these cars so special. But it has been my business to test the Spur with the insight of personal experience and to make value judgements about qualities which, some contend, are beyond value. Inside there's impressive room, with quality that knows no bounds. Wood veneers, handstiched hides and an infotainment system the equal of Symphony Hall sound quality. Luxury doesn't come better than this. In the back it's more comfy than your favourite armchair at your club. Powered by the latest 500bhp twin turbo V8 that shuts down four cylinders when you're cruising and

Russell Grants Monthly Horoscopes MAY 2015

ARIES March 21st - April 20th The Full Moon on the 4th forces you to juggle your finances. A big bill must be paid and won’t leave you with much spare cash. Fortunately, a fresh source of income will arrive soon after. This new opening or opportunity will draw upon your leadership skills. Be very direct and precise in your communications to avoid confusion. By demonstrating a clear vision, you will win the loyalty of the entire team. The New Moon on the 18th brings more money and just in the nick of time. This is a good time to create a budget so you can make the most of your increased income. Organisation won’t be your strongest suit around the end of the month. Make sure to check and double check your work before handing it in. Above all, don’t send emails until you are sure exactly who you are sending them to. You wouldn’t want confidential information being broadcast to an entire mailing list.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st The Full Moon on the 4th forces you to make some radical changes to a close relationship. You simply can’t keep giving everything to a demanding partner. It’s time to carve out more time for your favourite activities. Stop apologising for having different wants and needs than those of your closest friend. If you’re single, it may be because you are too closely involved with your family. Create a separate identity from your kin. Taking a short trip for pleasure is strongly advised for the first half of May. This journey will allow you to get your priorities straight. The New Moon on the 18th is perfect for improving your appearance. Change your look or update your wardrobe. The results will be very impressive. Don’t get in a power struggle with a religious or academic leader in late May. You can’t afford to make an enemy of such an influential person.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st The opening days of May find you going against the grain. The establishment won’t be receptive to your radical ideas, so you might want to keep a low profile. Then, when all other methods have failed, you can come forward with your suggestions. The Full Moon on the 4th brings an end to a difficult work assignment. This job will probably cost more than you anticipated. It will be difficult to make a logical decision on the 9th; choose your heart over your head on this confusing day. The New Moon on the 18th invites you to rest, relax and rejuvenate. Spend some time by yourself, enjoying solitary activities that give you joy. If you have to take a day off from work or hire a babysitter, so be it. It will be impossible to get a straight answer from a government agency or bureaucratic institution in the final days of the month. Wait until mid-June for clarity.

CANCER June 22nd - July 23rd Don’t discuss your private life at work in early May, or a hidden enemy could spread some terrible rumours about you. The Full Moon on the 4th marks a turning point in a romantic relationship. Arguments about money are putting undue strain on a relationship. The two of you need to have a serious discussion about your individual attitudes in regard to spending and saving. You won’t get much help from colleagues during the first half of the month. If you need to do something, you’d better tackle the project yourself. The New Moon on the 18th is ideal for social pursuits of all kinds. You’re sure to meet a powerful executive at a party or professional gathering. Keep some business cards on hand, as you’ll want to pass on your contact information. Don’t let your best friend or lover push you around during the second half of May. You have a right to your tastes and opinions.

LEO July 24th - August 23rd The Full Moon on the 4th forces you to take care of some domestic problems. You can’t afford to spend all of your time at work any longer. Be honest in assessing the changing needs of a child or parent. Your boss will have high praise for you during the first half of the month. Your willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty will result in a raise or promotion. If you’re unemployed, take this opportunity to apply for work. Go for positions that will put you in the spotlight, like public relations. The New Moon on the 18th will find you assuming a different role than you have played in the past. You’ll enjoy implementing efficient systems and organising a chaotic situation. Use the second half of May to work towards a cherished dream. Friends with good connections can help you reach this goal. Don’t hesitate to ask for their help.

VIRGO August 24th - September 23rd The first days of May find you over obsessing over your career. Don’t neglect your family during this busy time, or you’ll drive a wedge between you and a relative. The Full Moon on the 4th finds you pressed for time. It will be hard to finish all of your errands on time. This may result in a fine for a late payment. Keep a careful eye on the time as you go about your tasks. You’ll be in great demand at work as mid-month approaches. Juggling your personal and professional lives will be a continued source of strain. The New Moon on the 18th is ideal for scheduling an overseas trip. If you’re single, you will find love on this exciting journey. Don’t be surprised if you have to revise a legal agreement in the second half of the month, when unforeseen circumstances change your situation. A wonderful work assignment arrives as May turns to June.

LIBRA September 24th - October 23rd The Full Moon on the 4th brings disappointing news about money. You won’t be paid as much as you thought for a demanding job, or a steady source of income will come to an end. A good job is within your grasp, so long as you are willing to play second banana to a seasoned expert. You will hear more about this position on the 18th, when the New Moon prompts you to have talks with an authority figure. If you aren’t able to get the salary you want, negotiate for more annual leave or reduced hours. Find a way to make this job work for both you and your employer. It will be necessary to get additional training as May turns to June. At times, you will feel as if you’ll never master a skill. Give yourself permission to make mistakes at first. Don’t worry; your diligence will eventually pay off.

SCORPIO October 24th - November 22nd The Full Moon on the 4th forces you to do battle with a relative. You need to set stronger personal boundaries with a family member who keeps invading your privacy. Your personal pull is at an all time high on the 6th. Take this opportunity to ask for a favour, apply for a grant, or go on a first date. The New Moon on the 18th finds you celebrating an engagement, wedding, or commitment ceremony. Alternatively, you might become business partners with a powerful executive. The road to romance will be rocky in late May. Arguments over money, intimacy and obligations will threaten your domestic tranquillity. Don’t resort to personal insults when you’re fighting, or the damage will be permanent. If you’re single, it will be impossible to find a person who shares your interests. Be content with going solo. You can’t afford to lower your standards when it comes to love.

SAGITTARIUS November 23rd - December 21st Don’t inflict pessimistic thinking on your best friend or lover in early May. The Full Moon on the 4th brings an embarrassing secret to light. If you don’t have as much expertise in a certain area as you pretended, go ahead and admit it. Move quickly to close a deal in mid-May or a rival will steal your thunder. The New Moon on the 18th is perfect for landing a steady job. This job may not be especially stimulating, but it will improve your financial situation. Be more attentive to your best friend or lover as May draws to a close. You might have to assume some of their responsibilities or help them through a difficult emotional situation. It is possible your loved one will have to relocate during this time, due to flood damage or an unforeseen natural disaster. Just remember that when one door closes, another will open.

CAPRICORN December 22nd - January 20th May finds you in a rather gloomy mood, possibly because you feel isolated and alienated. Reaching out to friends will relieve this depression. The Full Moon on the 4th prompts you to leave an organisation that no longer reflects your values. Fortunately, your love life will shimmer with excitement on the 5th, when someone confesses a crush on you. Do you already have a partner? Take this opportunity to show your devotion with a beautiful gift. A holiday package to a country known for its natural beauty will be a high spot of your year. The New Moon on the 18th is ideal for launching a creative endeavour. Give yourself permission to experiment with paint, fabric, wood, or any other material of your choosing. Jealousy could rear its ugly head at the end of May, when a rival tries to steal your amour away. This is a potent reminder to keep the passion alive at all costs.

AQUARIUS January 21st - February 19th The Full Moon on the 4th brings about an aggravating situation at work. You’re tired of being passed over for a flashier colleague. The only way to put this trend to an end is having a talk with your boss. If you’re self employed, there will be difficulty with an employee who continually defies authority. You’ve got to issue an ultimatum and be willing to follow it through. Money for a household purchase becomes available on the 6th, thanks to a powerful benefactor. The New Moon on the 18th is ideal for buying a home, signing a lease, or expanding your current abode. You’ll resent a loved one’s attempts to make you settle down on the 25th. The two of you need to have an honest discussion about the future. Don’t mince words. Confusion over finances at the end of May forces you to review bank accounts with a fine toothed comb.

PISCES February 20th - March 20th Don’t waste your time trying to change your employer’s mind at the beginning of May. They won’t be willing to accommodate technological innovations. The Full Moon on the 4th forces you to cancel a trip or settle a lawsuit. Try not to dwell on your disappointment. There are better days ahead. For instance, the 16th will prove wonderfully romantic, when your amour gives you a beautiful token of their appreciation. The New Moon on the 18th will be equally gratifying, thanks to good news about a class or writing project. You’ll feel pressured to spend a lot of money on home improvements during the second half of May. Go ahead and do some emergency repairs. Postpone a redecoration project for later in the year, when you’ll have more funds. Seemingly inexpensive purchases will add up to a tremendous amount. Sit down and make a list of your priorities. Plumbing and electricity should trump new sheets and towels.

The peloton crosses Swarkestone Bridge in 2005.

TOUR OF BRITAIN TO WIND THROUGH DERBYSHIRE Sir Bradley Wiggins (second) passes through Little Eaton in 2012.

T

he route 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain has been announced with Stage Six winding its way through the beautiful Derbyshire countryside on Friday 11th September. This is British Cycling's premier road cycling event and the stage, from Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham will give cycling fans the opportunity to see the world's best teams and riders competing on their door step. In 2013 the Tour was won by Sir Bradley Wiggins riding for Team Sky. The Tour will start in Wales for the first time, in the modern era, with Anglesey hosting the start of the opening stage to Wrexham, finishing eight days later in the heart of London with an iconic new circuit taking in many of the capital's world famous sights. The hope and intention is to encourage eight days of aggressive, uninhibited racing, the sort of action that has become the trademark of the Tour of Britain. Other firsts for British Cycling's premier road cycling event include a stage start in the Scottish capital Edinburgh and two stages taking in Northumberland and the north east of England. Stage Two sees the race return to the heart of Lancashire for the first time since 2010, from Clitheroe to Colne, while Cockermouth in Cumbria will be the start venue for the first of two stages to include Scotland. Stage Three heads through Carlisle, and the Scottish Borders, to finish in the grounds of Floors Castle at Kelso. A second Scottish stage will begin from Holyrood Park in Edinburgh, showcasing some of the city's iconic landscapes, before heading through the Borders and Northumberland to the finish on the coast in Blyth. Stage Five will trace Hadrian's Wall from Prudhoe in Northumberland into Cumbria and the Lake District before finishing atop Hartside Fell in the Pennines. At five-miles long and 1,904-feet high, the climb will provide the highest and toughest summit finish in modern Tour of Britain history. Friday’s Stage Six will join Stoke-on-Trent to Nottingham, with the latter returning to the route for the first time since 2012. The 189-kilometre stage will start in the city centre of Stoke-on-Trent and head through Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands

into Derbyshire. Here the race will pass through Buxton and turn north towards Whaley Bridge before heading across the Peak towards Hathersage. Heading south, the Tour passes through Bakewell, and on to Matlock and Belper, via Carsington Water. The final miles in Derbyshire see the Tour pass through Horsley Woodhouse, Smalley, West Hallam and Ilkeston before heading towards the stage finish in Nottingham. The route is still provisional with the exact route through the Peak District subject to final confirmation from Derbyshire County Council. The stage is set to finish at the Central Promenade on Nottingham's Forest Recreation Ground. Derbyshire has been on the Tour of Britain route on three previous occasions. Bakewell hosted a stage start for the first Tour, in 2004, the route passing through Derby city centre. The following year Buxton was chosen to start a stage, which wound its way through Matlock and Wirksworth, and across Swarkestone Bridge heading for Leicester and another finish in Nottingham. In 2012 the Nottingham-Knowsley Safari Park stage drew large crowds as it again passed through our county. "Stage Six will not be an easy stage at all for the riders, and may well be the toughest of the entire 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain, said Mick Bennett, Race Director of Friends Life Tour of Britain organiser’s SweetSpot. “We have an exciting and very scenic route joining two cities both with a rich cycling heritage, which is sure to play a part in shaping the overall race for the Friends Life Yellow Jersey." The penultimate stage will be the longest of the 2015 Friends Life Tour of Britain at 225-kilometres, heading from Fakenham in Norfolk to Ipswich in Suffolk, before the final stage in the centre of London. Once again ITV will screen three-hours of live coverage of every stage, starting on ITV for the opening Wales stage before reverting to ITV4 for Stages Two to Eight. ITV4 will also screen a onehour highlights programme each evening during the race.

DONINGTON PARK OLD GUARD RULE BTCC ROOST

Race 1 podium: Colin Turkington (third), Jason Plato (first) and Gordon Shedden (second).

With a big shuffle in the established order, and a host of exciting young drivers flexing their muscles, the 2015 British Touring Car Championship season Is predicted to be the most open for years. Exciting it certainly was, at Donington Park in April, and the fans flocked to the circuit in huge numbers, but it was the experienced old guard that still prevailed on this occasion. BTCC’s wining-most driver, and twice-champion, Jason Plato won the opener taking his win tally to 89 while reigning champion Colin Turkington took race 2. The old master Matt Neal scored his 55th victory in the third race, in his 25th year in the championship. It was always going to be close at Donington, with less than a second covering the top 13 in qualifying, Colin Turkington (Volkswagen CC) taking pole by 0.056 from Gordon Shedden in the new Honda Turkington leads the start of race 1 as Plato (behind) slips inside Shedden.

“I’m over the moon – another win for the Type R is brilliant, and Flash getting onto the podium too is even better.” Gordon Shedden (left) congratulates team-mate Matt Neal on his race 3 win.

pole in the draw for the final reverse-grid race, one that would be a touring car classic. Rob Collard’s BMW got the better start to lead the first couple of laps, but Cook showed great maturity, at the sharp-end for the first time, to regain the lead. Jack Goff (MG 6) and Sam Tordoff (BMW) tangled at the chicane on lap 6, bringing out the safety car, but Cook held his nerve at the restart to lead from Collard and Aron Smith. Having missed the opening race altogether, Smith had worked his Volkswagen through the field and now passed Collard to challenge Cook for the lead. As Cook made his move the pair touched and ran wide though the Craner Curves, allowing the chasing pack past - Collard, Neal, Jordan and Shedden, having a great drive back through the field now he was back on harder rubber. When Neal made his decisive move on the penultimate lap, Jordan and Shedden followed through and, with Dave Newsham’s Chevrolet stranded in the gravel at the chicane, there was no opportunity to challenge Neal at the final corner. Neal, seeking a fourth title, became the first driver to win twice this season, taking the flag by 0.157 seconds from Jordan, with Shedden a further second back. Matt Neal was delighted with Honda’s third win of the season “It was certainly all going off right from

Turkington held the lead into turn 1, but Plato slipped inside Shedden for second and passed Turkington for the lead before the chicane. After two laps Plato had stretched the lead to 2 seconds over Shedden, who pushed Turkington back to third, and went on to win race 1 by 1.4 seconds. Shedden had pole for race 2, by virtue of his race 1 fastest lap, but Turkington was off the line fastest to lead at the first turn. Jordan was up to second on lap 2 before Warren Scott’s off brought out the safety car. Turkington got the jump at the restart to establish a gap to the field but Shedden, on the softoption tyre, fell through the field to finish 14th. It was pretty slippy out there especially at the start and end of the race, but the car was so quick through the fast stuff it was really a case of hanging on and making the moves wherever you could.” Neal leads the standings by 2 points from Turkington with Shedden 5 points further back as they head for round 3 at Thruxton. Local highlights of an exciting support programme included a maiden victory, in Ginetta Juniors, for Buxton’s Jonathan Hadfield and an MSA Formula podium for Chesterfield’s Sennan Fielding. Derbyshire Guardian will look at the support races in more detail in the next issue.

MOTO2: MAIDEN GP WIN IS LOWES ‘BEST’ “It's a massive weight off my shoulders because I could have won in Qatar and then I had the crashes this week as well.”

S

am Lowes has declared his debut grand prix victory, at the Circuit of the Americas’ Moto2 race, as the best win of his career. Derby rider Lowes (Speed Up Racing) shadowed leader Johann Zarco (Ajo Kalex) for 13 of the 22 laps before delivering his move six laps from home. The 24-year-old went on to cross the line 1.999s clear of the Frenchman.

A delighted Sam Lowes celebrates his Moto2 victory.

racing in 2014. “At the start I was a bit nervous and didn't want to crash again,” said Lowes. “I didn't feel great, so I sat behind Johann because I knew that if I went for the lead then it would be a long second half of the race.

“The emotion hit me massively on the cool down lap,” smiled Lowes, riding battered and bruised after a big fall in qualifying. “I needed to pull over and have a bit of a cry. I wanted to make sure I looked cool when I got back to the pits!

“I made my move with six laps to go and I had some pace to pull away a bit. I think this is probably my best win, to be honest, for a lot of reasons. It's a higher level for one. Last year a lot of people wrote me off, I think, and even now people are saying 'he crashes a lot'. Which I do. I am crashing a lot, but I've come such a long way in such a short space of time that I'm going to make mistakes.

“It's a massive weight off my shoulders because I could have won in Qatar and then I had the crashes this week as well. I actually had better pace in Qatar than here but I made a mistake. So it was a long time coming and it all caught up with me a bit after the finish.”

“In 2009 I was at work [as an electrician], when a lot of these guys were racing in Moto3. That's the fact of it. Learning the tracks is hard enough and now I've come here for a second time and I've gone over a second quicker. If you do that each week you're going to do alright!”

Lowes, who won the World Supersport title in 2013, had a best finish of fifth place during his first season of grand prix

Despite his Qatar DNF Lowes is now joint third in the championship and just four points from title leader Alex Rins.

WORLD SUPERBIKES – ROUND 3 PODIUM AS HASLAM STAYS IN TOUCH

Leon Haslam scored a podium in race 2.

All smiles for Leon Haslam after taking pole position.

fter taking pole position, Red Devils Aprilia's Leon Haslam finished in fourth and third places, respectively, in the two races of the third round of the World Superbike Championship, at the Aragon circuit in Spain. He stays second in the title chase. Jonathan Rea (KRT) scored his fourth win of the season in race one, following that up with a second place to extend his championship lead. Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Superbike Team), second in race 1, put together the perfect second race, scoring the very first win for the Panigale R in the Superbike World Championship. Tom Sykes (KRT) placed third in the first race, having led it for 12 laps, but was unfortunate to fall in the second race. Smalley rider Haslam was unable to stay with the leading trio of Rea, Davies and Sykes in race 1 but the higher track temperatures in race 2 helped him reach the podium. “Overall I have to be happy as we’ve made really good progress all weekend, at a circuit where neither myself nor Aprilia have experienced too much success in the past,” said Leon. "I’m happy enough with a fourth and a third and being able to take my first podium finish at Aragon.

“As usual the team worked brilliantly between the races and improved the set-up for me.” “Getting pole position yesterday was a bonus, but we did go into the races not really knowing for definite what we could achieve. In the first race the cooler conditions meant I was losing one second per lap to the leader but then the warmer conditions for race two really helped us. “As usual the team worked brilliantly between the races and improved the set-up for me. In race two I was quicker than Jonathan (Rea) in a few places but he could just get the power down a touch earlier onto the back straight to stop me catching him.” In the championship table, after three rounds, Rea’s four wins and two second places give him 140 points with Haslam on 114, Davies 83 and Sykes 66.

FUTURE OF SPORTS CENTRE AT MOORWAYS IN BALANCE M

Moorways Sports Centre has closed.

The Moorways running track.

oorways Sports Centre closed its doors at the end of March and the future of the centre is now in the balance. Derby City Council have promised to keep the swimming pool, also on the site, open until at least 31st March 2016, but says it cannot afford the running costs of both the sports complex and the new Derby Arena on Pride Park. Derby Athletic Club is looking at ways to remain in its home at Moorways. The club hopes to put forward a bid to see it take over the sporting complex in partnership with another organisation, as the complex, includes the outdoor running track. Councillor Alison Martin, cabinet member for leisure and culture, confirmed that the complex was to close, as a council-run sports centre, in February and was looking in to the feasibility of other interested parties working with the athletics club in partnership. It is understood that a local football club has, for some years, wanted to establish a home at Moorways, using the pitch in the centre of the field, and is now in talks with Derby Athletic Club. A commercial sports organisation, with experience of running similar venues, has also come forward, but a spokesperson for the athletic club did not want to name either party at present. Derby Athletic Club, formed in 1887, has seen club members represent Great Britain in Olympic competition in 1964, 1988 and 2004. The most celebrated club

member was Fiona May, the long jump world champion of 2000. The club has used the neighbouring sports centre, which was ear-marked for closure by the council in 2011, for training. In 1989 they built their own club house behind the grandstand. Derby City Council spent ÂŁ360,000, in 2013, improving the running track which now has eight lanes. The sports centre, which was used by around 80 young Derby AC athletes twice a week, is in need of a face-lift but is essentially sound. Derby Athletic Club have funds available to do this, but have been reluctant to spend this, given the uncertainty of their future on the site. Club chairman Keith Bullock is keen to see as many sports

facilities in the city as possible remain open. He is hoping, now, to be able to put forward a proposal for the city council to consider with a joint-bidder bringing some funding and expertise in running this kind of facility. Derby City Council say they have offered alternative places at Springwood Leisure Centre and the new Derby Arena for existing clubs and organisations. The council have promised to maintain the centre until a decision has been made on its future. If the council cannot reach agreement with interested parties about the future of the sports centre, it could become the site of the proposed 50 metre pool intended to replace the ageing pool currently on the Moorways site.

DONINGTON PARK BRITISH SUPERBIKES

‘Shakey’ Byrne put down a marker to his rivals.

BYRNE THROWS DOWN THE GAUNTLET up the road. Ellison hung on to take his first victory since 2013 by 0.131 seconds from Byrne. Brookes and Linfoot were nine seconds adrift, but separated by a mere 0.058 seconds as they crossed the line. Byrne admitted to being tired, towards the end of the race, as he recovered from a broken left hand, sustained in testing in Spain just a month before. This was the team’s first win, but Ellison dedicated his win to his friend Michael Bate who recently passed away. He had not realised it was Byrne who had pushed him so close at the end. “I kept seeing ‘plus zero’ on my board, and I kept thinking ‘That’s got to be Kiyo,’ because Skakey didn’t look like he had that pace!” Ellison was forced to start race 2 from the back row after a battery failure, so Byrne led away, followed by team mate Stuart Easton and Kiyonari. Linfoot, having a tremendous weekend, quickly worked his way to second before taking the fight to Byrne and, by his own admission, was surprised to take the lead on lap 5.

Ellison scored the first victory for JB Speedfit Kawasaki.

F

our-time British Superbike champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne has thrown down the gauntlet to his rivals as Donington Park opened the new season of the MSA British Superbike Championship over the Easter weekend. The reigning champion is aiming for a record fifth title after he took a second place and then a win in the opening two races at Donington. Byrne qualified his PBM Kawasaki third, behind Ryuchi Kiyonari (Buildbase BMW) and James Ellison (JD Speedfit Kawasaki) on the front row of the grid, and led into the first turn before Ellison squeezed past at the apex. Byrne returned the honour at the Melbourne turn while Kiyonari was shuffled down the pack to eventually finish 14th. Following an early safety car period, Ellison again swept through on the restart with Dan Linfoot (Honda Racing) holding third for much of the race. Australian Josh Brookes (Milwaukee Yamaha) pulled a great move to pass Linfoot into the Foggy Esses on the final lap but, by now, the leaders were well

Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne is still the man to beat.

Kiyonari, who completed a double victory here in 2014, ended his day with a big off at Coppice delaying Brookes, who thought he could have had a second podium, but had to settle for sixth. Byrne and Linfoot continued to trade places in a thrilling duel in front of the big bank holiday crowd. Easton kept a watching brief in third as Linfoot sought his maiden win, but in the end it was

Byrne’s experience that prevailed by 0.589 seconds. “The intensity was so strong, it was difficult to enjoy it,” said ‘Shakey’ afterwards. “To be at round 1 and have a ding-dong like that, it was great fun.” With Byrne hoping that some serious training would improve his fitness in time for Brands Hatch, two weeks later, his rivals must surely be focused on being the best of

the rest. ‘Shakey’ leads the way after one round, with 45 points, ahead of Linfoot (33), Ellison (29) and Brookes (26). Buxton’s Christian Iddon, recovering from a dose of gastro-enteritis, took a seventh and fifth place on his Bennett’s Suzuki and has 20 points in seventh place.

This was Ellison’s first victory since 2013.
