STRIKE

With firefighters planning to strike on Friday November 1 and Monday November 4, residents are being urged not to hold their own makeshift bonfire parties on those dates.

The industrial action is planned from 18.3023.00 on the Friday and from 06.00-08.00 on the Monday. A Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said that rather than hold their own fireworks parties during those times people should “stay safe and attend organised bonfire displays” instead. The current dispute surrounds recent pension changes for firefighters with the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) writing on its website: “Last weekend the FBU postponed a five hour strike after the Westminster government

and fire employers shifted their position and finally recognised that firefighters faced losing their jobs and a large chunk of their pensions under new changes imposed in April. Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary said: “The FBU has been very reasonable, but we are now faced with broken promises and those in power evading their responsibilities. “The Westminster government has created this mess, but it is refusing to clear it up. It now recognises the problem, but it won’t provide the legal and financial guarantees firefighters need to ensure they have a job and an unreduced pension in the future. “Firefighters face the sack towards the end of their career and the loss of their pension. That can’t be right. The employers promised to tackle the issue of firefighters facing the

sack for failing fitness tests last week, only to say they can’t offer any guarantees this week. That is simply not the way to run a public service. “Firefighters don’t want to go on strike, but we are left with no option when the government and the employers refuse to deal with the problems of their own making.”

Meanwhile Derbyshire Fire Authority has approved for consultation a plan by its chief fire officer that will transform Derbyshire fire and rescue service. Proposals include:
• loss of 16 fire engines
• loss of 11 fire stations
• loss of over 100 full-time firefighters. The FBU said on its website: “For many these cuts will increase emergency response times … meaning that when you call 999 it will take longer for a fire engine to arrive. “Fewer resources means that, during an emergency, both public safety and firefighter safety are compromised.” The FBU has launched a campaign to oppose the plans and you can find further information on their website http://www.fbu.org.uk/

LEADER HITS BACK AT PM Page 2. Issue 10. Derbyshire Guardian.

“RELATIVELY MODEST” CUTS CLAIM

Derbyshire County Council Leader Anne Western has rejected claims by the Prime Minister that the cuts facing local councils are “relatively modest”. Speaking at the meeting of full council today (Wednesday 2 October), Councillor Western said that David Cameron seems out of touch with the realities facing local government “The funding cuts announced by the Coalition Government will have cut a third - £227 million - off our budget by 2018,” said Councillor Western. “Unlike Mr Cameron, I don’t consider them to be relatively modest. They will devastate important local services. “He is wrong to suggest we’re only being asked to find an extra 2.3% in spending cuts. But perhaps he is not aware of what his own government is doing. “Does he not know about the extra cuts imposed on us over the summer by the Department for Communities and Local Government?”

“First we were led to believe that our main grant for local services for 2015/16 was going to be cut by 10%. Now it has risen to 27%.” She added: “Every council is going to have to make very significant cuts to their services. I would urge the Prime Minister to listen to politicians from all parties who have spoken out

But Sir Merrick has gone even further warning that some councils could go bust. And he confirms the finances of some councils are against the scale of the cuts and the damage close to breaking point as a result of Coalition they will do to local services.” Government-imposed cuts. “David Cameron Councillor Western’s comments echo the needs to take note of what councils across concerns raised by Sir Merrick Cockell, chair of the country are saying,” continued Councillor the Local Government Association. Headteacher Ross Griffin said: “The children really enjoy reading week. We have lots of activities to inspire a love of books. “As well as a visit from Councillor Greenhalgh, author Daniel Blythe, whose work includes Doctor Who novels, came to see us. Children will be dressing up as a favourite book character, pupils from different years buddy up and read to each other, and Foyle’s book shop has donated cash to buy new library books.”

Councillor Greenhalgh said: “Reading is so important for children. It improves their language skills, develops their vocabulary and their imagination. Children who can

The school, in Whitecotes Lane, opened a new library earlier this year and children have been asked if they want to donate a favourite book to the library too.

TRUSSES SIGNAL PROGRESS IN EAST MIDLANDS AIRPORT REDEVELOPMENT

Huge steel trusses have been lifted into place as construction work continues apace on the new security search hall at East Midlands Airport. Main trusses 23m long by 1.5m deep and weighing five tonnes each were fitted by local company Robinson Structures from Derby. Main contractor BAM Construction, which has offices in Derby, is overseeing a £12m redevelopment of the airport. This includes reconfiguring the terminal building to create more retail space and extending the terminal front, which will house a new security hall. Steelwork for the security hall was completed last month, with the facility due to open to the public before the end of this year. BAM is undertaking a 14-stage overhaul of the airport, which receives around 4 million passengers every year. Contracts manager Jon Kiteley said: ‘It is great to see the steel frame of the new security search hall taking shape. This is a positive indication of the progress of this important project. ‘We are using a number of local companies on this scheme as we make sure we benefit the local economy and environment as well as the passengers and

Struggling families will be able to get advice on everything from debt management to welfare rights, thanks to a major addition Foster carers who dedicate to advice services in children’s themselves to providing loving centres. homes for children were honoured on Friday. Due to growing demand for help, Derbyshire Derbyshire County Council carers with ten years or more service attended the Foster Carers’ Long Service Awards at County Hall, Matlock on Friday October 11. 21 foster parents from across the county attended the ceremony. The carers who achieved their long service with the county council this year provide a range of fostering services, such as offering respite care for children with disabilities and providing emergency care placements at short notice. Carers were rewarded for their continuing efforts with a meal followed by a presentation of long-service certificates. Councillor Anne Western leader of Derbyshire County Council presented the carers with their long service certificates. She said: “Our foster carers are an incredible asset to the county because they encourage, support and care for children who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to live with their families.“ Through the dedication and effort of these extraordinary people the authority is able to make sure children do not miss out on having a loving home when circumstances place them in our care. “ The long service awards began in 2003 to demonstrate our immense gratitude by thanking our foster carers personally for their amazing contribution. “If it were not for them we would not be able to give our children and young people the good start in life that they deserve. “It is our honour to be able to pay tribute to these wonderful people and celebrate their involvement.” Anyone interested in finding out more about fostering can call 0800 083 77 44, visit www. derbyshire.gov.uk/adoptionandfostering or email fostering@derbyshire.gov.uk.

County Council is expanding its advice services in children’s centres to a day a week. The rising cost of living combined with low incomes, high unemployment and changes to benefits has contributed to decreased living standards for low income families in Derbyshire. This includes families in work as well as those on benefits. The authority is now proposing to spend almost half a million pounds running an advice centre in each of its children’s centres. Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for children and young people Councillor Kevin Gillott said it was vital the authority helped to alleviate poverty and ease stress on families trying to make ends meet. He said:

“Research shows that poverty and debt have a very serious impact on health and we are doing what we can to reduce health inequalities in Derbyshire. Levels of child poverty in the county are slightly below the national average but they are increasing. By creating advice centres within our children’s centres, which are already well used and at the heart of communities, we can help families who are struggling.”

growing number of benefits’ appeals. The money will also help the team train up volunteers and staff in the third sector to help families with benefits’ advice. A further £75,000 over two years is set to go to the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers’ Centre which represents families at benefit appeals. The investments outlined in the report are part of a raft of anti-poverty measures introduced by the county council to tackle health inequalities and improve the life chances of children and families. Other recent measures include giving £108,000 to the growing number of food banks in Derbyshire and spending £360,000 to support Derbyshire’s Credit Unions which can offer safe and affordable loans to people on low incomes who may be tempted by payday loan companies.

They also gain an extra £10 of income, such as free school meals or tax credits. “The cost of living has risen by 4 per cent in the last year, but average earnings have only increased by 1.5 per cent which creates a growing gap between incomes and wages. “The council has to make difficult decisions due to cuts by the Coalition Government of £157million, but helping hard-pressed Derbyshire families is one of our priorities.” If approved, the new advice services are due to be up and running in children’s centres by April 2014. Drivers put lives at risk by breaking traffic laws

Ignoring the rules of the road puts lives at risk – that’s Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership’s message after a survey revealed that more than two-thirds of drivers break traffic laws. The research by road safety charity Brake also looked at the reasons behind the lawbreaking. It showed that: 35 per cent of those of those surveyed break traffic laws because they believe they can handle it. 33 per cent fail to follow the rules because they’re not paying attention 1 per cent say they know they’re taking risks, but do it anyway Mike Ashworth, chairman of the partnership’s managing group, said: “It’s alarming that so many people are putting lives at risk by breaking traffic laws. The survey results reveal a road network where the majority of drivers are either overconfident or distracted. “The only way to protect yourself and others is to obey traffic laws and give the road 100 per cent of your attention. It doesn’t matter how skilful you are – you will put lives at risk if you fail to follow the rules of the road.” The Brake survey, which was supported by insurance company Direct Line, involved 1000 drivers across the UK.

Case study

North Derbyshire couple Fiona and Neil* had always planned to extend their family through adoption and finally took the plunge in 2010. The pair already knew how important a permanent home could be for a child as Neil himself was adopted. While the process is intensive, the end results are life changing for everyone involved and they welcomed five year old son James* into their family in 2011. Fiona says: “The rewards of adoption are amazing and to hear him call us mummy and daddy is fantastic. Fiona, aged 44, said: “Our daughter was ten when James joined our family and it took a while for her to accept him. “But I think it would have been the same even if we’d had another biological child - they have a normal sibling relationship, arguing one minute and then we see them snuggling up on the sofa or holding hands. “James adores her and follows her around all the time - as she was an only child it was quite hard for her at first to have that level of attention.” The process of becoming an adoptive parent can take at least six months and there are several stages to go through including a medical exam, training and personal references being taken. You will also be asked a lot of information about you, your background, your family and your support networks.

Fiona says: “The adoption process is an in-depth process but you have to bear in mind that they want to make sure you are the right people and that you will not let a child down who has already had a lot of disruption in their life. “It’s hard work but it is worth it in the end to know that you’ve given a child a secure and happy home.” *Names have been changed

NEW STUDY REVEALS STATE OF HEALTH IN DERBYSHIRE Page 10. Issue 10. Derbyshire Guardian.

A new report reveals how the health of people in Derbyshire compares to those living elsewhere in the country. The Public Health England study will help Derbyshire County Council monitor the success of public health campaigns and plan new steps to improve the health and wellbeing of local people. Levels of deprivation, child poverty, homelessness and violent crime are all way below the national average according to the report. And generally local people enjoy better health than those who live in other parts of the country. Derbyshire County Council took over responsibility for public health this year and is investing in services that support people who are most at risk of illness and injury.

council could do more to encourage people to eat more healthily, drink less alcohol and stop smoking, particularity during pregnancy. Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said: “While it’s good news that Derbyshire is a healthy place to live and work, we are going to do even more to tackle the areas that need attention.” The council plans to help people adopt healthier lifestyles and has agreed additional funding to support local priorities. Councillor Allen added: ‘There is a seven year life expectancy gap between the least and most deprived areas of the county. That’s why we are putting in place a number of initiatives to help people who are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living.” The council is continuing to fund Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) sessions in GP surgeries and extending CAB to all children’s centres to help families who are being particularly hit by austerity measures. Local credit unions have received a £300,000 grant to help them extend their instant loans scheme, and the council has awarded a further £108,000 to local food banks to support people with emergency food parcels. These are some of the initiatives designed to address the causes of ill health such as poverty, financial insecurity and the stress that these problems can cause.

Los Angeles, CA (June 6th, 2013) This show looks at the importance of heroes organisations, Mosques, foreclosed houses, in the Judd Apatow produced comedies Comedian, actor and author, Russell Brand announces his first ever world stand-up tour. Keeping in line with Brand’s comedic style, the tour, officially named “Messiah Complex,” will be a dissection of various social and religious figures and the reality of their lives through comparisons of each other. Messiah Complex is a mental disorder where you think you might be the messiah. Did Jesus have it? What about Che Guevara, Gandhi, Malcolm X and Hitler? All these men have shaped our lives and influenced the way we think. Their images are used to represent ideas that often do not relate to them at all. Would Gandhi be into apple? Would Che Guevara endorse Madonna? Would Jesus be into Christianity? All great people are flawed, all of us, flawed people are capable of greatness and for every identifiable icon there is an anonymous mob of unrecognized bods doing all the admin and heavy lifting.

in this age of atheistic disposability. Plus there’s sex. Obviously.

Brand states, “I am going to tour The World (our one, Earth) with Messiah Complex, causing bother and excitement and offering opinions that have not been either solicited or thought through. Of course I’ll be in English speaking countries (UK, Ireland, US, Canada) but also Scandinavia, Russia, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine; anywhere that will have me to be honest and that are relaxed about free speech. As well as theaters I will be appearing in prisons, drug rehabs, social network HQs, universities, nationalist

protest sites, Synagogues and in people’s private homes. I dedicate this Messiah Complex tour to the four men that are it’s subject, Che Guevara, Gandhi, Malcolm X and Jesus- I know this is what they would have wanted. If this is the end of the world I’m going to go out laughing with an erection.” About Brand:

Beginning his career as a stand-up comedian, Brand rose to fame in the UK for his Big Brother spin-off, Big Brother’s Big Mouth. He launched his first nationwide tour, Shame (Russell Brand: Live for DVD), in 2006 and followed it up with his second nationwide tour Russell Brand: Only Joking (Russell Brand: Doin’ Life for DVD) in 2007.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. He brought his stand-up tour, Russell Brand: Scandalous, to the US in 2009. Brand was recently seen as the host of his own late night talk show, Brand X and can soon be seen in Diablo Cody’s directorial debut Paradise. Brand’s other film credits include Rock of Ages, Arthur, Bedtime Stories and The Tempest. Also an acclaimed author, Brand has written two books, My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs and Stand-Up which was on The New York Times best-seller list for five weeks in a row, and the follow up, Booky Wook 2: This Time It’s Personal.

passion for his subject has made Ray a true master of the subject he calls ‘Wilderness Bushcraft’. After years of teaching himself the ancient skills devised by our ancestors his aim was to bring these techniques back to life, passing them on to other kindred outdoorsmen and women. To do this he created his own company Woodlore, the School of Wilderness Bushcraft, in 1983. Now in its 30th successful year it is testament to the ambition, devotion and knowledge which Ray has invested in his company, as he laid the foundations for what would arguably become the most-respected and widelyrecognised school for bushcraft today. Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir does it again! 1920 saw the birth of some notable people. Clive Dunn became the actor best-loved for his portrayal of Lance-Corporal Jones in Dad’s Army and Alf (later, Sir Alf) Ramsey became the only England manager to win the World Cup. A few months before the turn of that same year, a group of colliery officials from the Eastwood area idly chatted about the formation of a men’s choir. Thus, 1920 also witnessed the birth of Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir and the rest, as they say, is history. Still very much alive and kicking all these years later, ECMVC is not only very proud of its history but continues to innovate and promote the very best of male voice singing as it performs for local groups and audiences, hosts visiting choirs and joins others as guests elsewhere.

Apple has held one of its “big events” to They will launch with quad-core, six-core, eight-core launch some new products and update or 12-core Xeon processors and up to 1TB of others and, once again, it has got everyone PCI-based flash storage. talking. There are some who love anything Apple Other features include: does, others who are quick to find fault and AMD FirePro graphics with up to 4,094 stream processors, some who will rush out to buy the new stuff up to 12GB of VRAM just because it is from Apple and new. supports up to three 4K displays HDMI out, dual-Gigabit Ethernet, Thunderbolt 2, USB 3.0, YourGadgetGuide was keeping a close eye Bluetooth 4, a motion sensor and dual-audio out. on what was announced and here is our round up of the major announcements… Apple’s new Mac Pro, coming in December, looks a lot like a highly polished aluminium dustbin but this is a super high-end device with blistering speed and functionality. In fact these new machines boast the fastest processors that Apple has ever put in a Mac. The cheapest model will feature a 3.7GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processor, 12GB of RAM, dual AMD FirePro D300 graphics and a 256GB hard drive and as the prices go up then so do the specifications. Designed around an innovative unified thermal core, the Mac Pro features the latest Intel Xeon processors with up to 12 cores, dual workstation-class GPUs, six Thunderbolt 2 ports, PCIe-based flash storage and ultra-fast ECC memory. Packing amazing performance in a stunning new design, the all-new Mac Pro starts at £2,499.

“The new Mac Pro is our vision for the future of the pro desktop, everything about it has been reimagined and there has never been anything like it,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The new Mac Pro packs up to 12-core Xeon CPUs, dual FirePro GPUs, ultra-fast ECC memory, new PCIe flash storage, Thunderbolt 2 expandability and more into a radical new design that is one-eighth the size of the previous generation Mac Pro.”

The all-new Mac Pro is architected around a unified thermal core that allows the system to efficiently share thermal capacity across all the processors. An innovative fan draws in air incredibly efficiently and makes the new Mac Pro as quiet as a Mac mini. The result is a pro desktop with unprecedented performance packed into a design that is just 9.9-inches tall and one-eighth the volume of the previous Mac Pro.

“Screamingly Fast” new iPad Air is Apple’s What Does The OrangeFox Say?... thinnest, lightest and most powerful iPad We’re pleased to announce, as of October 17th 2013, OrangeFox Media has acquired

YourGadgetGuide. The technology site which provides over 100,000 consumers a month with information will be looking to grow its audience and improve overall production quality, in a bid to become a more established technology site. We know that we’re in a very crowded market, it’s important we find our own angle, and that’s what we’ll be looking to do over the next few months. Again, looking at our video quality and style, changes need to be made to increase our audience retention, maximising value to advertisers. We’re also looking at more ways to monetise YourGadgetGuide, and again that goes back to increasing the views, and increasing interaction with our viewers. We’re always looking for our viewers to let us know what they want, and we take all suggestions onboard. It’s a very exciting time ahead for OrangeFox Media.

If you have a phone then you should never lose your pen again Apple has announced its thinnest, lightest and fastest ever iPad…the iPad Air which will be available from November 1. Featuring a 9.7-inch Retina display the new tablet weighs just one pound and is 20 per cent thinner than the fourth generation iPad at just 7.5mm. The borders around the display are narrower, making it easier to hold, and it will feature the new powerefficient Apple-designed A7 chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture, ultrafast wireless with faster built-in Wi-Fi and expanded LTE cellular connectivity. Apple’s Phil Schiller said: “iPad created an entirely new mobile computing experience, and the new iPad Air is another big leap ahead. “It is so thin, light and powerful, once you hold one in your hand you will understand what a tremendous advancement this is…it delivers all-day battery life in the lightest fullsized tablet in the world.” Apple said the new iPad Air’s Retina display makes web pages, text, images and video look incredibly sharp and realistic while the new power-efficient A7 chip allows the battery to be even smaller without sacrificing its life. The iPad Air also has a next generation FaceTime HD camera, the iSight camera with 5MP sensor and with the improved image signal processing of the A7 processor Apple says it will bring “faster auto-focus, up to three times video zoom, five times still

zoom, better dynamic range and automatic image and video stabilization.” iPad Air with Wi-Fi models will be available in silver or space grey starting on Friday, November 1, for a suggested retail price of £399 inc VAT (£332.50 ex VAT) for the 16GB model.

…and a new generation iPad Mini

Most people agreed that the one thing missing from the iPad mini was a Retina Display…well Apple have put that right. From sometime in November (the exact date has not been announced) Apple will ship the latest version of the iPad Mini with the much sought-after super-sharp display and the super-fast A7 processor. Apple said: “The new iPad mini with Retina display packs all the 3.1 million pixels (2048by-1536 resolution) of iPad Air into its 7.9inch Multi-Touch display, for a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. “The 7.9-inch Retina display of iPad mini is 35 percent larger than screens on 7-inch tablets, and is the only small tablet to deliver the full iPad experience, now with razor sharp Retina quality. “Images are crisp, text is crystal clear, movies play at full 1080p HD-resolution and the 475,000 apps designed specifically for iPad work automatically.” iPad mini with Retina display Wi-Fi models will be available for a suggested retail price of £319 inc VAT (£265.83 ex VAT) for the 16GB model.

I am one of those people who is forever losing my pen. I can have five or six on my desk in the morning and by mid-afternoon they can all have disappeared. If only there was a way of keeping my pen with me at all times… Well like most people these days I am hardly ever away from my mobile phone, where I go it goes. Like me, British inventor Andrew Jewson, 50, was fed up with losing his pens but he had a bright idea to solve this problem. He invented a tiny ball-point pen, which at just 20mm long, fits neatly inside the standard headphone jack of a modern smartphone. When not in use the Jackpen sits neatly inside the phone and when you want to use it then just reverse it to instantly

turn your phone into a pen. “Ah!” I hear you say: “We don’t need a pen because smartphones all come with various notepad or voice recording functions.” Yes, that is very true, and in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, thena built-in stylus (or S-pen to give it its proper title) even comes with the device. But despite the rapid advances in technology I still find the old-fashioned pen far easier to use for jotting down a quick note than any modern counterpart…if only I could find the thing in the first place. And I would certainly find it if it was attached to my phone. The Jackpen costs £3.99 for a pack of three.

Waste and the law – a simple guide to your responsibilities

In this article, Ian Hird of leading waste and resource management company, FCC Environment, tells Derbyshire businesses the key waste laws they need to be aware of.

The latest Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs figures suggest that businesses produce almost 50 million tonnes of waste per year in England alone. In a world where we are all encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle, removing your business’ waste from the general waste stream can have a healthy positive impact on the bottom line. Waste is described in the 2008 Waste Framework Directive as:

“…any substance or object which the holder discards or intends or is required to discard…”

However, material sent for recycling remains legally defined as waste until such a time as it is reprocessed into a new raw material of sufficient quality to meet End of Waste Criteria. The main legislative driver of the increases in recycling we have seen over the last decade is landfill tax. Currently set at £72 per tonne and due to rise by another £8 in April 2014, you have to pay this if your waste is not sorted and recycled. Put very simply, the more you recycle, the more you will save.Sections 33 and 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 established the principle that the producers of waste are ultimately responsible for its final disposal. The safest method of ensuring all of your waste is handled correctly is to have a full waste audit carried out. As with all laws, they are driven by both a carrot and stick approach. Late last year, the crackdown led to a record fine of

£200,000 and a suspended prison sentence for a company director who ignored the rules. But why tie yourself in legal knots when you can simply appoint a trusted and professional waste management company to take the stress off your hands?

To book a free waste audit and find out how your business can benefit from recycling with FCC Environment, call 0844 736 9992 or visit www.fccenvironment.co.uk.

Innovative commercial finance borrowing without the banks With reports of many small and mediumsized companies struggling to access business loans through the traditional banking sector, it’s no surprise that many are opting for new and innovative ways of raising vital working capital.

Goodman’s application process takes just 20 minutes and a decision is made in around 48 hours. If a business is approved for finance the money could be available within two weeks, or sometimes in as little as three days.

Bypassing the banks, ‘peer to peer’ lending takes place when individual funders lend money to other individuals or businesses. By cutting out the high costs and complexity of banks, they can lend at rates that suit both the investor and the borrower.

“Our 200 potential funders compete to lend businesses money, so we always provide really competitive rates of interest,” explained Paul.

A great option to help businesses grow Derbyshire-based Goodman Corporate Consultancy has a panel of independent funders ready and waiting to lend money to the right businesses. “Peer to peer lending is a great option in any economic climate for a business looking for funding,” said Paul Goodman, Managing Director. “It can provide fast, flexible and cost effective funding for all types of business needs, including working capital, business expansion, asset finance and one-off business expenses.”

Getting the right support When a big business explores new markets or chases grant funding it usually has the resources to manage the process in house.

Loans of between £5,000 and £1 million are available to help businesses keep on growing and funding can be offered to sole traders, partnerships, limited liability partnerships and limited companies with an annual turnover in excess of £100,000. Goodman also provides other commercial finance solutions including commercial mortgages, invoice finance, asset finance and development finance. Husband and wife team Clive and Louise Bramley have launched a new business which combines the best of the online and offline worlds. Their company, Bramley

Showroom Ltd, auctions and sells a wide range of clearance goods, returns and

liquidated assets to both retail and trade clients. Typically they will have TVs, white goods, household items, garden furniture, toys, computer equipment and much more, all at bargain prices. The goods, which are sold in via online auction, can be found on their website – www.bramleyshowroom.co.uk - or viewed at their showroom just outside Derby at Unit 1, Riverside Park, East Service Road, Raynesway. At their first auction, customers picked up a wide range of toys at bargain prices. Director Clive reckons that buyers can get typical savings of around 50 to 75 per cent of regular High Street prices by using his auction service. Clive said: “Our day-to-day customers are local retailers, businesses and the general public, buying for personal use or selling items on for profit.

“For example someone may want a bargain for themselves or a family member, an eBay sellers may be after stock to resell online while traders may be after stock for their own businesses.” At the first auction one customer bought 100 items with the aim of selling them on via eBay. The dates of all the forthcoming auctions, and the goods which will be sold, are all clearly shown on the website. All goods are sold “as seen” without guarantees or warranties and Clive and Louise encourage people to come to their showroom to view the items before placing bids so they can see exactly what they are bidding on. For those who don’t want to wait for the auction there is also a ‘Buy it Now’ option via the Bramley Showroom’ eBay shop. The couple also own a clay pigeon shooting range in Doveridge, as Clive is an expert shooter who hopes to compete in the 2016 Olympic team. Clive said their aim was to offer quality merchandise at bargain prices and to make the

whole auction process fun, enjoyable and straightforward. Users only need to register on the website once to be able to bid at auctions. Just choose the items you want to bid on and enter the maximum you want to pay. The system will then automatically bid for you in increments up to the amount you have specified. You will

get an email you to tell you when you have been outbid, or if you are winning. Successful bidders can pay by PayPal online or by cash or card at the shop when they come to collect their goods on the nominated collection days which can be found on the website.

Bosses urged to back ‘switch off before you drive off’ message

Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership is urging businesses to take road safety seriously after research revealed that nearly a fifth of staff don’t believe their employers encourage safe and legal mobile phone use while driving.

The survey by the AA also revealed that: seven per cent of staff feel under pressure to answer their hand-held work mobile when driving. Four per cent of staff have been criticised by their manager or colleagues for not responding to emails, texts or calls when driving for work or commuting. Two per cent of staff have been explicitly told to return emails, texts and calls when driving for work or commuting. Fifteen per cent of staff feel under pressure to answer their hands-free work mobile when driving for work or commuting. Mike Ashworth, chairman of the partnership’s managing group, said: “This is worrying news. Employers have a duty to

manage the risk posed by employees driving for work – even ones who are travelling in their own car. That’s why it’s so important to have a well-publicised policy banning the use of mobiles while driving.

“Drivers are four times more likely to crash if they use a mobile while driving so please publicise the fact that staff must switch off before they drive off.”

Mike added: “Some businesses think it’s ok for staff to use a hands-free phones while driving but it’s still easy to become dangerously distracted. “It’s not illegal to drive while using a hands-free phone – but drivers can still be prosecuted if they’re distracted and not properly in control of the vehicle.” The online survey was carried out by polling organisation Populous on behalf of the AA. It took place between 23 and 28 May 2013 and 22,194 adults were interviewed.

Dog lover Sarah Wall has turned her passion into her business and offers exclusive home boarding for dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Her philosophy is simple.

rapidly gained a reputation for offering the very highest quality facilities for dogs to ensure that owners can have a guilt-free time away from their pets.
Council approved and certified, Walls 4 Paws is fully licensed with SDDC and has full public liability insurance. It is also winner of the Petcare Commitment to Excellence Award 2013.
The facilities and environment ensures that the time away from owners will be as stress-free as possible for the pet but what about the owner? Well Sarah has that covered too. A very popular service that is offered is regular updates on the Walls 4 Paws Facebook page.
Here owners can check out Facebook on their laptop, tablet or smartphone and see how their dog is getting on without them.
Sarah said: “The Facebook page is extremely popular with so many parents who leave their dogs with us.
“It is really reassuring to be able to see that your dog is safe, happy and having a great time and that peace of mind can really be invaluable.
“So many of the comments left on the page say how the parents are missing their dogs but feel so glad to be able to see that they are in safe hands and enjoying themselves.”

Not all dogs are suited to such an environment and Sarah has a keen eye to ensure that the dogs being looked after will all get on well with one another.
This is done via a “meet and greet” session where the dog is assessed to ensure that they will fit in within the Walls 4 Paws environment.
Sarah said: “If a dog is socialised and has a happy demeanour then they will integrate well with us.

“I work from home so the dogs here get all the human companionship they would be used to at home and we have had more than 375 dogs in during the past two years”.

If you are away having a good time then that should not mean your dog doesn’t have a good time also.
Walls 4 Paws is about as far away from a boarding kennel as you could possibly get. For a start there are no kennels to be found anywhere on the premises.
What you will find is a five acre secure paddock where the dogs can run around and play to their heart’s content; a homely environment where dogs always come first and the guarantee that all canine guests are treated as one of the family.
Walls 4 Paws is located in Foston, Derbyshire, conveniently located just off the A50 between Stoke-on-Trent and Derby.
It has been going for three years and has

range of services including professional grooming, dog walking, day care and short to long term stays.

Top priority for Sarah is to create a happy, healthy, safe and friendly environment for the dogs in her care.
Walls 4 Paws offers a comprehensive

“Dogs love to socialise with other dogs and they love being in a pack and playing in a pack.
Sarah is particularly proud that a lot of her custom is return visits as dog owners see how happy and relaxed their pets are on their return.
The testimonials on the Walls 4 Paws website speak for themselves. Some recent comments include:
• “A big THANK YOU to Sarah and her human and k9 family. Our 2 year old

labrador, Roxy had a fantastic time at Walls 4 Paws. I was given such peace of mind on our family holiday, ...”Jo from Staffordshire.

“The house and paddock was spectacular, a dog paradise! I loved that Sarah’s daughter gave Hollie hugs whilst we looked around, a good sign that she would not be neglected. Seeing pictures on facebook from the other side of the world was also reassuring. Did I miss her? More than I imagined, did she miss me? NOT A CHANCE! Mrs J Osmen from Oakwood, Derby.
Thank you thank you thank you for taking such wonderful care of my pup over the festive period! You welcomed her in as part of your family and she had a whale of a time with you all. In fact I think it is safe to say she is fitter than when I left! We shall be recommending you to all and sundry and have no doubt she will be a future visitor for years to come x” Miss N Davies, from Wimbledon, London.

There can be no doubt that top level footballers get paid extremely well and they love to show the world that they have money to spend.

It may be fair to say that they also like to show off from time to time and what better way to do that than with their choice of home? You won’t often find a multimillionaire footballer going for ordinary or

run-of-the mill when it comes to homes. They want something special, something which reflects their lifestyle or their personality. They want something bespoke. The bespoke homes industry is huge and it is responsible for a lot of employment and businesses in related industries. So when people want a one-off home there are bespoke windows to fit and perhaps a landscaped garden and hand built walls are also options. Perhaps there will be a cinema packed full of the latest hi-fi and movie gadgets, a bespoke sound system throughout the house, wrought iron security gates, alarm and security systems, a swimming pool and on goes the list.If you are in the bespoke home market then you won’t want a standard kitchen or bathroom fitted either and these are areas where the rooms will be designed and the materials sourced and installed to the client’s exact specifications. Bespoke homes are designed from the

ground up and, by their very nature, are unique. They may be designed with caring for the environment as a priority, to make a particular statement or other or just to satisfy the whims and desires of the person who wants to live there. One footballer who got a fair amount of publicity for his new home was Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney. He caused an outrage by pulling down a 1930s house in Prestbury, Cheshire in 2004, to replace it with a six en-suite-bedroom mansion with neo-Georgian pillars. Rooney has gone for a cinema, sweeping staircase, sports stadium, and Grecian-esque statues in the landscaped garden where the turf alone was said to have cost £50,000 alone. Wife Colleen is said to have added her own design touches to the home, reportedly installing a white leather sofa that she had customised with £10,000 worth of Swarovski crystals. According to the website primelocations. com: “The west wing has a giant indoor pool with rather a lot of pink on the walls, changing room and Jacuzzi. “There’s also a triple garage to house all the cars and a £30,000 CCTV system.” Footballers spend an absolute fortune on their homes. Even

back in 2006 Forbes magazine estimated that $150 million per year is spent by footballers on homes in the UK alone and the Footballers’ Wives idea of a typical footballer’s home may not be too wide of the mark. The article said: “For a sense of the typical player’s house, look at the hit British television series Footballers’ Wives. The mock-Georgian mansion featured in the show, with gold embossed fountains in the front garden, a swimming pool with water cascading from the ceiling and wall-to-wall flat-screen TVs, is truly real-life Premiership chic. “Some owners have flattened early 20th-century estates to make way for new pink Doric columns and Welsh-dragontiled pools, while one burrowed under a road to give himself a secluded route to his swimming pool. Others have resorted to high gates and extensive grounds to distance themselves from Britain’s voracious paparazzi.” You don’t have to be a footballer to own a bespoke home…just have an idea of what you want and then you must decide how different you dare to be and how much you want to stand out from or blend in to your surroundings.

In 2011 Henry was admitted as a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers and early next year he plans to launch a new contemporary craft furniture range which will include a selection of dining and occasional furniture items alongside storage options, all of which can be customised to suit the client’s exacting needs. Henry said: “I try to make commissioning an item of bespoke furniture with B:BESPOKE as simple, enjoyable and rewarding an experience as possible. “Each and every commission includes a complementary design consultation, where the brief, budget and any special requirements will be discussed. “A site visit is often advantageous at this point. A design concept is then developed to be presented, in the form of 2D visualisations, scale drawings and material samples. A final quotation and timescale will also be provided.” For more information check out Henry’s website at www.bbespokefurniture.com

In life you can rarely get something for nothing… but that need not be the case when it comes to replacing your old or faulty boiler. Put it this way, business partners Wayne Lambert and Gary Hicks have installed around 80 brand new boilers since July and it hasn’t cost the clients anything at all. They are currently fitting between five and ten new boilers per week and they say their hardest task is to convince the customers that there is nothing for them to pay. Together they are the driving force behind GreenPowerUK which fits the free boilers for those who qualify under a governmentbacked scheme. GreenPowerUK is a Mansfield-based

company which has over 20 years experience in the industry and which prides itself in putting customers first. Wayne said:

The boilers are being made available under the government’s ECO Affordable Warmth Obligation, where qualifying households can apply to have a new ‘A’ rated energy efficient boiler installed in their home free of charge. And with three of the big six energy companies recently announcing price rises in the region of eight and ten per cent for domestic gas and electricity tariffs, there is no better time to ensure you have the most efficient boiler you can get. As long as the households satisfy certain criteria relating to state benefits and the condition of their existing central heating system, they can apply for a free boiler.

“The great thing about this scheme is that it targets those who are most in need of a replacement boiler but who would otherwise not be able to afford to get one. “Fuel poverty is a very serious issue and this helps people in that situation in a way which can make a really positive difference to them and their families. “Heating is a very basic requirement and for those people who qualify under the scheme then they will get a brand-new modern boiler complete with a five-year warranty for free.
You may qualify for a free boiler under the ECO Scheme if the “We do all the work from the initial following criteria apply: consultation to installing the boiler and it is our aim that all our customers are more than happy with the high standards of the house is privately owned professionalism and workmanship we deliver on each and every job.” or a privately rented,And you

Sometimes its the simple things that really matter and getting the basics right are important to me so each member of staff is trained to adhere to a simply set of rules as follows:_ 1. DiPSU Putting the Career into Care

Care has changed over the last ten years. Disabled and Older People are now hiring care staff directly as Personal Assistants (PA’s) so they can access the community and live productive and integrated lives. They are relying less on traditional care agencies and day care centres.

DiPSU have supported nearly 2,000 disabled and older people to employ nearly 5,000 Personal Assistants since 2003. Government figures show nationally there are 90,000 vacancies currently in the care sector. In Nottinghamshire we have our own fair share. No skills are required to become a PA, as full training can be arranged. If successful in getting work, DiPSU can arrange, through funding from Skills for Care and partnered training providers, access to nationally recognised Diploma’s. What does it take to be a Personal Assistant? Honesty, integrity, good time keeping, reliable, good listener, good talker, partnership working, supporting choice and respecting an individual’s rights to selfdetermination. If you can work to these or would like to

know more about how to achieve these, then contact DiPSU and we will help you into this rewarding career. How much do I get paid? £7.00 an hour is about the average a PA gets, but as each disabled or older person employs you directly themselves, then this is something that can be negotiated with them. Will I be wiping bums all day? No! On average only 5% of a PA’s work is personal care. The job role is much more about supporting an individual to live a fully interactive life. Supporting them to manage their own home and food, supporting them to access the community and being a key role in their and their family’s lives, is most important.

What do I do next? DiPSU can create a step by step pathway for you into this line of work. This includes formal induction training, signing up to the Social Care Commitment, DBS (former CRB) checks, information guides and completion of an application form onto the PA Register, where disabled/older people can access your application form to see if you are suitable for interview. Please contact DiPSU on 0845 4634778 or email recruitment@dipsu.co.uk or visit www. dipsu.co.uk/recruitment

Arc Leisure

Her mother Amanda said: Two new British swimming records have further enhanced the growing reputation of our Arc Leisure Matlock “It was a very successful weekend for Tully and she really thought the pool was as a competition venue. great and the District Council’s facilities for disabled access fantastic.”

GB para swimmer Tully Kearney smashed the British S10 100m and 200m backstroke records in the same race last weekend.

Swimming in the 200m event, she recorded a time of 2.28.09, beating Dame Sarah Storey’s 15-year-old record by over four seconds. At the 100m mark she also broke Alice Tai’s best British effort with a time of 1.11.67. Sixteen-year-old Tully, bronze medallist in 400 freestyle at IPC World Championships in Montreal earlier this year and already a European record holder, was swimming at the Derventio eXcel 3rd Short Course Open Meet hosted by Arc Leisure Matlock.

“We’ve now recorded around 700,000 visits and although the top class swimming galas we host from time to time can be a slight inconvenience for regular users, they definitely enhance Arc’s reputation. It’s worth remembering

that some of the £12-million funding that helped build this magnificent centre was won specifically on the basis that Arc would become a regional competition venue.”

Derventio eXcel, the elite swimming squad for Derbyshire and part of Bill Sweetenham’s blueprint for international swimming success, use Arc as a regular training venue. A spokesperson said: “Tully’s record swim was the icing on the cake at a great event - and the eight-lane Arc pool really is fantastic.” Chairman of the District Council’s Communities Committee Councillor Jennifer Bower said: “Two years after its official opening by Lord Seb Coe, we are delighted that our flagship leisure centre continues to go from strength to strength.
