STRIKE

With firefighters planning to strike on Friday November 1 and Monday November 4, residents are being urged not to hold their own makeshift bonfire parties on those dates.

The industrial action is planned from 18.3023.00 on the Friday and from 06.00-08.00 on the Monday. A Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said that rather than hold their own fireworks parties during those times people should “stay safe and attend organised bonfire displays” instead. The current dispute surrounds recent pension changes for firefighters with the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) writing on its website: “Last weekend the FBU postponed a five hour strike after the Westminster government

and fire employers shifted their position and finally recognised that firefighters faced losing their jobs and a large chunk of their pensions under new changes imposed in April. Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary said: “The FBU has been very reasonable, but we are now faced with broken promises and those in power evading their responsibilities. “The Westminster government has created this mess, but it is refusing to clear it up. It now recognises the problem, but it won’t provide the legal and financial guarantees firefighters need to ensure they have a job and an unreduced pension in the future. “Firefighters face the sack towards the end of their career and the loss of their pension. That can’t be right. The employers promised to tackle the issue of firefighters facing the

sack for failing fitness tests last week, only to say they can’t offer any guarantees this week. That is simply not the way to run a public service. “Firefighters don’t want to go on strike, but we are left with no option when the government and the employers refuse to deal with the problems of their own making.”

Meanwhile Derbyshire Fire Authority has approved for consultation a plan by its chief fire officer that will transform Derbyshire fire and rescue service. Proposals include:
• loss of 16 fire engines
• loss of 11 fire stations
• loss of over 100 full-time firefighters. The FBU said on its website: “For many these cuts will increase emergency response times … meaning that when you call 999 it will take longer for a fire engine to arrive. “Fewer resources means that, during an emergency, both public safety and firefighter safety are compromised.” The FBU has launched a campaign to oppose the plans and you can find further information on their website http://www.fbu.org.uk/
