“It’s great to bring the show to Alfreton! People of Alfreton and Derbyshire come along and get the Real Deal” “I’m very much looking forward to visiting Alfreton, an area of the country I love bringing the show to. I remember visiting the area several years ago; the items brought in were fantastic- great quality - with fabulous history and stories attached” Why let your antiques collect dust in the attic when you can sell them for cash? Take money on the spot from a dealer OR if you think your item is worth more….take a gamble at auction! Dickinson’s Real Deal is currently one of the most popular daytime show on ITV and is regularly watched by over a million people. Back for a eleventh series, David Dickinson and the dealers are traveling around the country looking for some more bobby dazzlers brought in by members of the public! If you want to sell your goods, but only for the right price, David and the dealers are going to be at: Alfreton Leisure Centre On SATURDAY 17th May 2014 You could be quids in like many of the people who have already taken part! for £1080, Gary’s GMT masters watch reached £4,900 at auction, and Ken walked away with £500 for his camera and two lenses! This could be you! As usual David Dickinson will be keeping an eye on the deals and giving advice about whether to take the dealers’ cash OR gamble at auction. But the final decision lies with our contributors and it’s up to them to decide which option is the REAL DEAL! We would really appreciate some publicity for our Dealer Day which will be filmed at: Alfreton Leisure Centre, Church Street, Alfreton, Derbyshire DE55 7DB, On SATURDAY 17th May 2014 Members of the public should bring their antiques & collectables along – our team of independent valuers will be offering free advice on all items brought along on the day. HELP THE FIGHTBACK AGAINST THE SCAMMERS

Residents and businesses are being urged to help fight back against fake websites, scam email, junk mail and cold calls as part of a campaign by Derbyshire County Council’s trading standards team. The council’s ‘Scamnesty’ is part of a national campaign running throughout May to fight back against fraudsters who cause misery to thousands of people nationwide. Locally it is being organised in conjunction with Derbyshire Citizens’ Advice Bureaux. The county council is asking people to come forward with suspect material and to drop it off at their local library or Citizens’ Advice Bureau between 1 and 31 May. They can also report telephone and internet scams. There are four topics that trading standards want to hear about and

to help people deal with - online schemes, unwanted telephone calls, scam mail and doorstep callers. Examples of these are: online ‘copycat’ websites who charge fees for services like passport renewals, driving tests and tax returns nuisance telephone calls claiming to be from reputable companies and offering to sort out computer viruses or insurance mail about lotteries, prize draw catalogues, psychics and other dubious schemes that seem too good to be true doorstep cold callers offering services like free boilers, insulation or solar panels. Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said: “There are dozens of scams circulating at any one time which is why our Scamnesty is so important. “I urge Derbyshire residents to

become our eyes and ears by reporting the latest scams. We can then use this intelligence to help our investigations and take action where it’s needed. “The bottom line here is that if an offer seems too good to be true it probably is. That’s why I would suggest to people that they should never to give out their bank details or send any money to these unscrupulous tricksters.”

standards team wants to hear about scams all year round.

Emma Hagger, chief officer of Derbyshire Dales, Amber Valley and Erewash Citizens’ Advice Bureau, said: “Scam mail is getting more sophisticated and often targets the most vulnerable members of society. “We’re pleased to be linking up with the county council again for the annual Scamnesty appeal.”

COUNTY CELEBRATES AFTERNOON TEA FOR NUTRITION AND HYDRATION WEEK Page 4. Issue 16 : Derbyshire Guardian.

Dozens of older people in Derbyshire County Council residential care homes and day centres tucked in to traditional afternoon tea to mark Nutrition and Hydration Week. The nationwide event helped to raise awareness of the importance of older people eating well, drinking enough and staying healthy. As part of the week, places offering residential care, including care homes, day centres and hospitals, were asked to take part in the Worldwide Afternoon Tea. Several county council-run centres and care homes took the opportunity to get involved and across the county, staff served up tea and a selection of cakes and sandwiches to residents and day centre clients. Briar Close home for older people in Borrowash played its part in the Worldwide Afternoon Tea by holding a bake-off competition, sponsored by Unilever. Two teams representing county council-run care homes and a resource centre went up against two teams representing adult social care from Nottingham City Council in the bake-off. Judges for the bake-off were

Nottingham City Council dementia practice development specialist Kate Fisher, frozen meals company Apetito representative Ellen Clayton and channel marketing manager at Unilever Solutions James Allrod. First place was awarded to staff from Derbyshire County Councilrun The Glebe home for older people in Alfreton - Christine Cleaver, Tracey Kenneison and Joanna Birrell. Second place went to Derbyshire team Lesley Gregory from Ada Belfield home for older people in Belper, Helen Allsop from The Willows home for older people in Ripley and Lynne Marriott from the Ambervale Resource Centre in Ripley. Mandy Brierley from Cherry Trees home for older people and Denise Shepherd from The Oaks, both in Nottingham, were awarded prizes for third and fourth place. After the bake-off, residents at Briar Close tucked in to the cakes and scones made by all four teams. Derbyshire County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care Councillor Rob Davison attended the bake-off to meet the teams and to help hand out the cakes. He said: “We are all used to being told to eat

COUNTY EXPLORES MORE FUNDING OPTIONS FOR DIGITAL DERBYSHIRE A £27.67 million project to transform broadband speeds for thousands more businesses and residents across Derbyshire could be in line for another boost. Derbyshire County Council, which has spearheaded the Digital Derbyshire programme, signed a contract with BT to make superfast broadband available to a further 88,000 premises across the county, bringing it to more than 95 per cent of homes and businesses by 2016. Now the Government has made more funding available with up to £2.19 million earmarked for Derbyshire if the county council can raise an extra £2.19 million to match the Government’s investment. This would be used to increase the availability of superfast broadband in Derbyshire even further by extending the coverage, taking speeds above 24mbps. Councillor Joan Dixon, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for Jobs,

Economy and Transport, said: “Derbyshire is a beautiful place to live and work but its rural nature has meant many areas have been left behind when commercial operators have rolled out broadband services. “The Digital Derbyshire programme will make a real difference to the lives of residents and businesses and the economy of Derbyshire. “We’ve already committed to bring fibre broadband to more than 95 per cent of homes and businesses by 2016 and this new Government funding would allow us to do even more. “We’re looking at external funding sources and working hard to find the extra £2.19 million needed to secure the Government funding. Any extra funding we receive would be pumped into boosting speeds for premises in those hardest-to-reach areas.” The county council has submitted a formal expression of interest to the Government for the funding and work to raise the extra £2.19 million has already started.

more healthily and avoid high fat products, but these messages are not relevant to older people who may not be eating enough and are losing weight.

“It’s really important that people with smaller appetites eat little and often, eat more snacks and use full fat products, like butter and milk.” Briar Close resident Audrey McMylor, who has lived at the home for eight years, said: “It was a lovely afternoon and the cakes were delicious. In my opinion they were all winners.” Margaret

Wain, who is at Briar Close for a short-term stay, said: “They look after us all very well and it’s a wonderful home. The bake-off was lots of fun and something different for us, and the cakes were lovely.” Other homes that got involved in the Worldwide Tea Afternoon included Hillcrest in Kenilworth Drive, Kirk Hallam, where residents and staff took over the local pub, The Castle, to have their afternoon tea. Residents dressed up for the occasion and there was dancing and entertainment. Residents at Oakland in Swadlincote also took part by holding an afternoon tea.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION FOR ELVASTON CASTLE COUNTRY PARK CALENDAR Derbyshire County Council is urging people to take pictures of Elvaston Castle Country Park to help it create a calendar of the venue. Entrants will be asked to submit up to four photos which can be in any of three categories: a grand day out, history and heritage, or wonderful wildlife. The best 13 pictures will then be chosen by a judging panel to be used in an Elvaston Castle Country Park 2015 calendar which will be on sale for £4.99. Councillor Andy Botham, Derbyshire County Council’s Deputy Cabinet Member for Jobs, Economy and Transport, said: “Elvaston Castle Country Park is an inspiring setting and there is a tremendous amount of local interest in art and photography there. “We hope this competition will inspire people to visit Elvaston and our other country parks in Derbyshire.” Any profits from the calendar will be put back into Elvaston and four prizes will be offered, an overall winner and one for the best picture in each of the three categories. The closing deadline for entries is 1 August and winners will be informed by 7 August. Photos from some of the entries will also be put on display at Elvaston Castle Country Park during the Art in the Park week in September.

COUNTY COUNCIL TO DISCUSS PROPOSED NEW LIBRARY IN HEANOR

An East Midlands’ children’s hospice is calling on people in Derbyshire to help bake a difference and raise some dough by holding a cake themed Proposals to create a new event. purpose-built library in Heanor are to be discussed by Derbyshire County Council next week (Tuesday 15 April). A structural engineer’s report recommends the existing library should be closed on safety grounds unless it is immediately renovated - a project which would cost more than providing a brand new building. Councillors will consider a recommendation to demolish the existing building and provide a new library and car park on the same site in Ilkeston Road at a meeting of the council’s Cabinet on Tuesday 15 April. They will also consider a recommendation to temporarily relocate the library in a vacant shop in the town centre - potential locations are currently being investigated. The library will close on Thursday 17 April. Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Dave Allen said: “We appreciate some people may be concerned about the temporary loss of their library but we have no choice as it is becoming unsafe and no longer cost effective to repair. “These proposals present us with an excellent opportunity to

As part of its 20th birthday celebrations, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has launched the Rainbows Great Birthday Bake. The hospice, which cares for children and young people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses including those from Derbyshire, needs budding chefs or enthusiastic sweet tooths to hold baking fundraising events. Paula North, Rainbows community fundraiser in Derbyshire, said: “This year we are celebrating our 20th birthday so what better way to join in with our party than to bake a cake. Your event can be as little or large as you like, the only limit is your imagination. If you want to do something more unusual, you could organise a bucket collection dressed in caked-themed costumes, have a cake icing competition or stage a good old cake fight. “Over the last 20 years, we’ve helped thousands of terminally ill and life-limited children, young people and their families, through the toughest days of their lives. Right now, we’re caring for 288 children and young people – that’s more than ever before. So whether you’re a cake baker, or just an eager cake eater, do your bit and help us to bake a difference.” For more information on how to get involved, visit www.rainbows.co.uk/bake contact 0800 952 1133 It was a proud day recently at or email fundraising@rainbows.co.uk the Markham Vale Environment Centre near Bolsover.

consider a new purpose-built library in Heanor which is fit for the future and offers residents a wide range of modern, accessible services. “Meanwhile we will do everything we can to ensure library users are not without their service for too long and have already extended borrowing times and waived charges for overdue items.” The proposal to build a new library will cost £892,500 - compared to a complete renovation of the existing building which would cost the council £850,000 plus ongoing maintenance and repair bills. Heanor Library was built in the 1950s using timber posts and beams which have required significant structural repairs over the years and were badly affected by the recent severe wet winter weather. The branch has 5,600 registered members, with around 750 new members joining every year. Around 80,000 books were borrowed last year and the on-site public computers were booked nearly 20,000 times. While a new home is sought for a temporary library, people can continue to borrow books and use the other services up until April 17. Borrowing times are already

being extended and people will not be charged if an item becomes overdue as a result of the closure. People in the area using the home library service will not be affected by the closure. If Cabinet approves the proposals it is estimated a new library could be in place by March 2015. Up-to-date information on the temporary library site will be posted on the county council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov. uk/libraries

Classical chart-topping guitarist MILOŠ joins world-famous London Philharmonic Orchestra to go ‘Live and Local’ in Leicester and Stoke-on-Trent Thursday 24 April | 7.30pm | De Montfort Hall, Leicester Tuesday 29 April | 7.30pm | Victoria Hall, Stoke-on-Trent

All tickets just £15! The London Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to announce its next two concerts in Leicester (24 April) and Stoke-on-Trent (29 April) as part of its JTI ‘Live and Local’ tour. The Orchestra is joined by Gramophone and Classic BRIT Award-winning guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, and conducted by the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski. Miloš’s recent album release of Aranjuez with the London Philharmonic Orchestra on Deutsche Grammophon, is the artist’s third disc to reach #1 in the UK Classical Music charts. Inspired by the picturesque gardens of the Palace of Aranjuez outside Madrid, Joaquín Rodrigo wrote a colourful, strong yet tranquil evocation of elegance and beauty for guitar and orchestra whose contented, serene beauty is legendary: his Concierto de Aranjuez. Joining the LPO to perform this masterpiece is guitarist Miloš Karadaglić, one of the hottest stars of classical music. Montenegro-born Miloš

first started playing the guitar at the age of 8 and despite numerous obstacles brought about by the turbulent Yugoslav Wars, 17-year old Miloš was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. By 2012, Miloš had performed sold-out concerts on main stages worldwide including to an audience of 3000 at London’s Royal Albert Hall to critical acclaim. Following Rodrigo’s fiery concerto is Tchaikovsky’s Sixth Symphony, which so encapsulates the composer’s ultra-expressive, heart-on-sleeve creative outlook. A distraught Tchaikovsky, his

disastrous private life torturing him in life and forcing him into death, filled this symphony with honesty and passion - and he committed suicide nine days after its first performance. LPO Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Vladimir Jurowski conducts the Orchestra in these varied concerts, also including Mozart’s joyous Symphony No. 32. Matlock Bath will light up your life! Matlock Bath Illuminations in Derbyshire feature a unique parade of illuminated and decorated boats on the River Derwent every weekend throughout September and October.

Stainsby Festival is a wellestablished family friendly event which takes place in the beautiful rural setting of Stainsby, Derbyshire.

It is also a registered charity and a non-profit event which is run by dedicated volunteers. Stainsby is all about live music; hearing, playing, writing, performing, learning. All of the proceeds

Each boat carries a decorated model and as darkness falls the boats disappear into the blackness below, leaving the models apparently gliding along just above the water. On certain Saturday nights there are also spectacular firework displays at 9.00pm. The parade of decorated boats is led by a traditional candle lit boat, using in excess of 90 tea lights and is rowed by 82-year-old George Holloway of Matlock Bath. The Matlock Bath Illuminations have a long established history dating back to 1897 – first held to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. It was the recollections of an earlier visit to Matlock Bath, by the then Princess Victoria that inspired the Illuminations. She recalled how, when staying in Matlock Bath, she looked out of her hotel window and saw the candle lights were reflected in the River Derwent that flows through the centre of the village. The twinkling lights made a lasting impression on the young Princess. Today, the event still features the decorated and illuminated boats that are produced by the members of

the Matlock Bath Venetian Boat Builders Association and rowed by them each Saturday and Sunday evening during the Illuminations season. The Arkwright Cup, donated by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1903, is awarded to the winning design. The 2014 Matlock Bath Illuminations season will run from Saturday 6 September to Saturday 25 October. Rotation of the passenger seats is only possible when they have reached a predetermined height and seat rotation is also stopped at a predetermined height at the end of each ride cycle before the passengers can be lowered to the park position. The ride is designed to impose a gentle turning motion on the passenger and should not cause a nauseous feeling because of the limited forces and different direction changes which occur when the moves up and down the tower. The passenger feeling is similar to being in a viewing tower with the added excitement of experiencing great heights from an open seat. The ride speed can be varied and typically would do 14 rotations per minute (around 30mph) so not as fast as a thrill ride. Tickets will be priced at Adults £5, under 12’s £4 and they will be available to purchase from an onsite Box Office.

Cycle Scheme Page 26. Issue 16 : Derbyshire Guardian.

Electric Bikes for Fun and Fitness

The UK Government’s tax-free bicycle buying scheme has proved to have wide ranging benefits, with more than 400,000 people having purchased bikes via Cycle to Work, and it’s proved to be a massive benefit to not only health, but also on the environment.

The scheme, launched in 2005, gets a ringing endorsement in the form of a foreword by Norman Baker, Liberal MP and Minister responsible for cycling. Looking to the future, he notes that a 50 percent increase in cycling would ‘unlock’ £1.3 billion of public funds that would otherwise have been spent on tackling congestion, pollution and health problems. As a form of exercise, cycling has a broad appeal. Toddlers, pensioners, the able-bodied or people with disabilities can all enjoy cycling if they have the right equipment. Cycling is one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine because it’s also a form of transport. It saves you money, gets you fit and is good for the environment. It’s a low-impact type of exercise, so it’s easier on your joints than running or other high-impact aerobic activities. But it still helps

you get into shape. For example, someone who weighs 80kg (12st 9lb) will burn more than 650 calories with an hour’s riding, and tone their legs and bottom. If you ride up hills or off-road, you’ll also work your upper body. The best way to build your cardiovascular fitness on the bike is to ride for at least 150 minutes every week. Which will be an easy target to reach if you’re cycling to and from work every day, or even a few days a week. There is a lot of focus these days on the problems with the environment. Cars are a major source of pollution that is contributing to the many problems we have relating to the environment today, especially in

large cities and towns where a vast number of cars are driven by people commuting to work every day. Using a bike to commute to and from work can greatly reduce the amount of pollution and can be far less stressful than sitting in traffic for an hour or more each way. Studies have shown that on average, people can save up around 133,500 tonnes of CO2 a year – the emissions of a small city. With over 1,950 cycle scheme retailers nationwide and 51 located within the Derbyshire and Staffordshire area, there’s no excuse to not be a part of the only scheme that benefits your health, the environment AND your wallet!

Wheels to Work If you live in Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire and are struggling getting to and from work, wheels to work could be the perfect solution for you! With a wide range of transport available, it’s easy to see why Wheels to Work is swiftly becoming a well-known and popular scheme. Just a few of their transport option include moped loans, bicycles, push bikes and power-assisted bikes. The moped loan being the most popular choice by clients, provides users with a six month moped loan, tax, insurance and breakdown cover, servicing and maintenance of the moped, protective clothing, (if required) a heavy duty lock for your moped, not to mention compulsory basic training (CBT), Additional safety training is available after one month in Derbyshire and finally, ongoing support from the Wheels to Work team. All that is asked for in return, is that you take good care of your moped, report any problems and ensure your payments are up to date. Seems too good to be true? Well, I’m afraid that like all good things, your time on the scheme must come to an end, however Wheels to Work will never let you down and will even get you in touch with Credit Unions to help you find and organise different methods of transport once your time on the project ends. If you haven’t yet got your provisional licence, don’t worry! Wheels are available in all shapes and sizes. Wheels to work hasn’t failed to appreciate that not everybody has the time to complete a CBT so has also made bicycles available in their scheme.Wheels to work can provide you with a bike to get you to work, cycling hints and tips, safety equipment and route planning. Wheels to work has you

covered, with amazing prices and offers, you’ll be wheelie mad to miss out. Many people have benefited from the Wheels to Work scheme, one unique success story can be found on their website and shows just how beneficial the scheme can be to young workers in the modernday struggles of finance and transport: “Danny lived with his father in Clipstone. Unemployes since leaving school, Danny gained an apprenticeship with a building firm based in Papplewick. He needed to get himself to work each day by 7am but this proved to be a problem as unfortunately, there was no form of public transport at that time of day. Although his boss was pleased with his work and progress, it was not enough to make up for Danny’s late arrivals which started causing issues after just 2 weeks. He looked at sharing lifts with colleagues but this proved to be unpractical. Luckily, Danny applied for the Wheels to Work scheme and was accepted not long after an interview with the local W2W team. Danny now has his moped and can travel to work with ease AND on time! His boss is happy with him and Danny is committed to completing his apprenticeship in the construction industry. He’s now saving up for a moped of his own and hopes to buy a 125cc bike and return his moped to W2W to use to help another client out when he’s finished.” Danny’s success story is just one of many. If you find you can relate to Danny and are also struggling with finance and transport, you could soon add your success story to the W2W website if you just contact your local branch and arrange an interview with the friendly and helpful staff.

Question I hear and read that energy prices have gone up but have prices gone up that much that I should switch suppliers? Answer The big problem is that energy prices have outstripped general salary rises. According to Jamie Dowd of the Observer, “energy prices increased by 36% since October 2010 till October 2013”. We have had another increase since then. How many of us have had a 40% pay increase over the last 4 years? Question Is it worth switching energy

suppliers, do we really save that much? Answer A big yes to this question. Some family homes have saved in excess of £200 a year by switching suppliers Question Some friends told me that switching suppliers was complicated, confusing and the bills went up not down. Can this be avoided? Answer Absolutely. With energyquickquote it can take less than two minutes to get a quote as to how much you can save and it’s so simple anyone can do it old or young and low prices can be fixed to protect against any rises.

Question I haven’t got a computer to check prices. How can I get better energy prices? Answer An easy answer is to call our UK call centre on 0800 820 2610 and a member of our staff will talk you through it really quickly and help save you lots of money. Question I have prepayment meters in my home. Surely I can’t protect against price rises can I? Answer It is true that there is less choice but if you check out the website you may be able to

save a little money but more importantly protect yourself against any rises during this next year. Question I run a business can I find the cheapest business tariffs on the website as well? Answer Yes. On the first page simply click to get a business quote or visit www.energyquickquote. biz and this again is an easy to navigate website but any problems and you can call us on 079500 42282 or 0800 083 4033, someone will pop over and help you free of charge.

Other key points Radical changes are to be made to the pensions regime including removing the restrictions on access to pension pots so there will no longer be a requirement to buy an annuity when it comes to your retirement. The minimum retirement age for pension schemes will rise to 57 years in 2028 when the state pension age rises to 67 years, so for many of us those retirement years will be a little bit further away. The above is only a summary covering some of the key points within the budget so please see our tax app or website for more details, alternatively give me a call on 01332 380691.

WORKING AT

HEIGHT The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) continue to review and simplify guidance to legislation in line with the recommendations of Professor Lofstedt’s report on the impact of health and safety legislation in business. Most recently, publications have been updated with regard to the Work at Height Regulations 2005. The introduction of these regulations came with the myth that ladders were now banned and the HSE has moved to dispel this myth and provide guidance which better reflects the appropriate use of ladders and step ladders. Work at height is defined as any work where there is a risk of a fall which could result in personal injury. The regulations themselves have not changed and require that employers ensure that: All work at height is properly planned and organised Those involved in work at height are competent The risks from work at height are assessed and appropriate work equipment is selected and used The risks of working on or near fragile surfaces are properly managed The equipment used for work at height is properly inspected and maintained. The new HSE guidance note Working at Height INDG 401(rev2) provides excellent guidance on the steps required by employers to comply with the above. The guidance note provides a step-by-step diagram which helps employers work through the hierarchy of avoiding work at heights, preventing a fall from occurring, minimising the consequences of a fall and using ladders and stepladders. There are many examples of being able to avoid work at height, from using extendable tools from the ground (window cleaning for example) to designing in equipment that can be lowered to the ground for maintenance (e.g. some sports ground floodlight systems). Methods of preventing falls include fitting edge protection to flat roofs or the use of access equipment such as mobile elevating working platforms, tower scaffolds and full scaffold systems. Measures designed to minimise the consequences of a fall might include safety net and air bags or the use of personal protective equipment such as a fall arrest system. The final measure in the step-by-step diagram is the use of ladders and stepladders, tasks which are of low risk and short duration. The HSE have also revised its guidance on the use of ladders and stepladders (INDG455). The new guidance makes the point in bold that ladders are not banned but can be a sensible and practical option for low— risk, short-duration tasks. The guidance gives practical advice of the safe use of ladders and stepladders. The guidance notes referred to above are available to download free of charge at www. hse.gov.uk

The big assumption behind the March 2014 Budget:

How do lower tax rates result in increased tax revenues? Amidst all the eye-catching announcements in George Osborne’s fifth Budget, a big assumption enabling him to claim what he was doing was “fiscally neutral” went largely unnoticed. Certainly, some of the measures were (by the standards of previous Budgets) quite spectacular, with the removal of all remaining tax restrictions on how pensioners have access to their pension pots and the increase in the amount of money that can be saved in an ISA the two standout features. But how were these changes, plus the doubling of investment allowances and higher personal income tax allowances, to be paid for? Answer, by assuming that cutting the withdrawal tax on pensions from 55% to an individual’s marginal income tax rate will somehow result in increased tax revenues. Thus, the change is expected to generate an additional £320m in revenues for the Exchequer in 2015-16, £600m in 201617, £910m in 2017-18 and £1.22bn in 2018-19. Without this assumption, the Budget would have been expansionary, thereby potentially forcing the MPC into tightening monetary policy earlier than would otherwise be the case.

On the surface, this assumption appears to fly in the face of common sense. How is it possible to cut taxes and generate increased tax revenues? The confusion is understandable given the Labour Party’s commitment to reinstating the 50% higher rate tax band should it triumph in next year’s election. After all what would be the point, economically speaking, of raising the tax rate only to see the tax take go down? The problem is that the calculations and ready-reckoners used by politicians in stating their cases is that they invariably involve simplistic, static analyses. No attempt is made to allow for the second round, supply performance effects of tax changes that can be substantial in size and work in the opposite direction to that intended. These are typically caused by adverse effects on incentives to work, with the result that employment levels, and therefore tax revenues, are lower than they otherwise would be. There has been much debate in academic circles over the years about the implications of a tax hike on an individual’s behaviour. More specifically will it result in the individual allocating more or less time to work activities? The eventual outturn depends

on the relative strengths of what are known as the income and substitution effects. The substitution effect of a tax increase unambiguously reduces the amount of time given to work activities. This is because a tax increase is equivalent to a reduction in wages. It therefore reduces the cost of leisure, since this is simply the cost of wages foregone. Consequently, individuals are induced to substitute leisure for goods, thereby reducing the number of hours offered to the labour market. However, this may or may not be offset by the income effect. If leisure were a “normal” good (i.e. consumption increases with incomes), then the amount of time allocated to leisure activities would decline as taxes were raised. In theory, there is no reason why the income effect shouldn’t be the larger of the two, but this would happen only under exceptional circumstances. Moreover, if leisure were instead an “inferior” good, the income effect would be in the opposite direction, compounding the impact of the substitution effect. Empirical evidence leads us to conclude that the substitution effect is in fact dominant in the real world. In other words, higher taxes do result in a reduction in labour supply and therefore tax

revenues. Those countries with the highest marginal tax rates tend to be the countries with the slowest (underlying) economic growth rates. This is because high marginal tax rates reduce the intensity of job search, lower the attractiveness of employment relative to welfare benefits and therefore cut effective labour supply. Since employment growth is one of the two determinants of an economy’s productive potential (the other being productivity growth) it follows that the rate of economic expansion will be lower over the long run. This explains, at least in part, why the US economy, where marginal income tax rates are extremely low, can sustain growth rates of around 3% a year on an underlying basis without igniting inflation, whilst in Germany, where taxes and public spending are high, growth has struggled to average 1% a year or so over the last couple of decades. Keeping tax rates low in order to reward enterprise and encourage increased labour market participation rates should therefore lead, over time, to stronger rates of economic growth and consequently increased tax revenues. In contrast, policies that involve raising tax rates are likely to result

in weaker rates of economic growth, which in turn means fewer funds for public services. Mr Milliband and Balls please take note. John Clarke For further information on GHC Capital Markets Limited, please visit www.ghcl.co.uk or contact:

Measurement in the Digital World Insightful digital measurement starts with strategy planning, monitoring and reporting. However, measurement is a waste of time if you do not use the results to inform future online marketing and PR strategy decisions. The number of ‘likes’, followers, friends or re-tweets can provide a starting point from which to measure your digital online performance. However, your organisation also needs to measure and report on the number of conversations, leads and closes your business is achieving as a result of your online marketing and PR efforts and which content your audience engaged with. You can do this by utilising quantitative metrics when

measuring online conversations such as: How much activity are you generating e.g. link-banks, comments, re-tweets, comments on content etc? Which conversations result in leads, client retention and/or brand exposure? Are your conversations reflecting the key strategic messages of your organisation, product, service or area of expertise? What is the tone or sentiment of the content – positive, negative, formal, informal? Which content resulted in the most activity? What pages do they stay on the longest and which pages do they exit from? What’s the response rate to

Where did my data go? In an age where technology is king, the public are more savvy than ever to their rights. Fraudsters and hackers are becoming more sophisticated by the second. And with weekly reports of substantial fines it is right to question our confidence in the companies and services who handle our personal data. So do you get nervous and ask yourself whether YOUR business is doing what it should to protect personal data? Many of us have probably said to ourselves, ‘That won’t happen to us...’ but can you honestly be sure of that? Put simply, wherever you are using personal data (as little as a name and address) you are required to comply with the 8 best practice principles of the law; whether you are using the information internally, externally or via a third party. Having good IT security controls is great, but it is important to understand that this is a tool by which you can evidence

elements of compliance, other controls need to be in place that also include manual data. Outsourcing or nominating a competent team member to carry out the management of your data also makes perfect business sense, but it’s important to know

What’s in your brand? As the Derbyshire Guardian designer of the year I am pleased to be able to use this blog column, to both entertain, enlighten and inform you on graphic design, myself Linda Wild and my business Wild Ideas. At my youngest son’s 4th birthday party we had, bouncy castle and sunshine and a kitchen BBQ - a great afternoon and “what a great party” Poppy’s dad said. My friend Linda, helped with the washing up and said “what’s this blog all about then?” Well in answer to her, its just like a sneak peak into my life, an answer to the, “what have you been up to lately?” and “how’s the business going?” and “you’re a graphic designer, can you tell me about . . . . “ “you set up your own business - how did you do it” So if any of you have any questions then email me at linda@lindawildideas.co.uk, put Derby Guardian Question in the subject, and I will do my best to answer in this blog. To link in with my Design Expert article about needing graphic design to get your business started, I am going to talk about the development of my own name and brand, and hopefully some of you budding entrepreneurs will pick up a few chunks of helpfulness along the way. Maybe even develop a sense of point and reason (if you are struggling to “get it”). Unfortinately - “The truth is, most business owners do not understand the importance of good design” As a graphic designer, I need to get all my marketing perfect - or at least try. After all what people see of me is exactly what I am doing for them, so it needs to be the absolute best it can be. But your business is important to you too - I hope I am not wrong! - so you should be making your brand the best it can be too. The name and logo you create for your company has to be the most important part when you are setting up your business. Your brand is the identity that you present to the world. Your logo is a badge. The face of your brand. The one constant icon that has to be perfect! Don’t under estimate the impact of getting these things wrong. they need to live with you for a long time in order for your brand to become an established and recognisable emblem. So most company names are un-creatively titled after the owners who set them up. So now I needed do create my perfect timeless logo. My Nike, Apple, or Volkwagen. I avoided sitting down in front of my computer until I had doodled a few ideas - as that is the way I normally work. It needed to be perfect and I had a blank mind so sitting in front of a blank screen seemed rather pointless. I sketched while sitting in front of the TV, while passengering in the car, on scraps of paper. Wild plants growing into . . . . Flowers and leaves and swirls and letters and do you know what. I ended up with pages of nothing. But its a good exercise, and some of my clients do this too. It helps to put your ideas down on paper, and sometimes you come up with a brilliant sketch.Show me and I can recognise a spark - some little starting point to work on. This is important to me because then it comes from you - your thoughts, my creative thinking, one wild idea, and bam a fantastic logo! In the end though, with my own logo I did sit down in front of the computer, and I played around with type. And the strangest thing happened - that perfect subtle but clever iconic emblem emerged before my eyes with the simplest manipulation of the initial letters of my company name. Perfect perfect perfect. You can see it by clicking the link in the scrolling section on the home page of my website. So if you are, setting up a business, and you are creative enough to do this, and have the conviction to know when it’s right, then all credit to you. But if you realise the importance of good professional design, ( then you have already acknowledged your weaknesses). And you value your business and want to invest in creating a brand that will carry you forward, then get in touch. you can contact me via my website. www. lindawildideas.co.uk Thanks for reading Linda x

Consultancy is a very broad brush, but he’s an equally broad response… Consultants play a valuable part in modern business. They usually hold a specific expertise and can take that speciality from firm to firm, confidentiality assured at all times if they want to keep working. From a business perspective, it means smaller companies don’t need to employ staff to look after one part of their affairs. For example, accountants tend to work in a consultancytype capacity. They are not on the firm’s payroll but are paid on an hourly, daily, weekly or monthly retained rate. Many firms retain public relations and advertising consultants on the same basis. Although consultancy fees may seem dear compared with full time employment, the employer doesn’t have to worry about holiday cover, national insurance

contributions, income tax, sick pay, maternity pay or any of the other on-costs normally associated with employment. If, for example, a small or mediumsized company wanted to investigate and adopt low carbon sustainability initiatives – DNCC has a conference on this very topic scheduled for 10 October, keep watching www.dncc.co.uk for details – they could employ a consultancy to undertake the work for them. The consultants would either have knowledge of or investigate the best ‘green’ initiatives for the size of the company, bearing in mind growth plans, suggest a course of action, identify the long term savings to the business, oversee adoption of the initiatives and then leave the firm with no sacking or redundancy or final payoff unless one was included in the contract at the beginning The contract would normally be specific to that

one task and on completion, the consultancy costs end. It clean, it’s simple, it’s flexible and it’s tax deductable. If you want to bring that down to everyday life, think about food shopping. You can either take time out of your day to drive to the supermarket, walk round choosing what you want, queue at the checkout, pack your bags, pay, load the car, drive home, unload the car, carry your bags into the house and put everything away, or you can press repeat order on your smart device, pay, and at a prescribed time your shopping is delivered, leaving you time to, well, go clothes shopping, perhaps. That, in essence is how consultancy works. It frees up your time to focus on more important things, like running your business.

Mental Sliders in our heads that create our reality...! Imagine for a moment a slider controller on a sound mixing desk; the sort of controller that is commonly used by DJs or radio and TV presenters.

Imagine you can slide this controller to either the left or the right and either way each of the two opposing directions produces a completely different outcome or result. And now imagine too that you are in control of this slider and you can control it with your minds eye. Its a mental slider and with this slider you can control your mental states of mind one way or another. So with this analogy each of us can choose to slide the slider one way or the other and in so doing you are able to create our own reality and through this choice you make and then live by it day by day. If the slider is pushed to the right, then you create resourceful realities that lead to success, happiness and joy, whist pushing the slider to the left creates unresourceful realities that lead to misery and pain. Perhaps you might be wondering why people choose to create realities on the latter? In his book: You Are More Than You Think - the return to your authentic self, Andrew Jenkins takes you on a journey of self discovery, that step by step shows you how to control your mental slider and return to your authentic self ! Using the analogy of pushing your mental slider to the left more of the time will mean that you acquire ways of coping with the world around you based on: fears, avoidance, protection, or limiting mindsets and beliefs. Ultimately they lead to misery and pain, even though they are designed to protect us, in the end you become victim to them; they are excuses of why you cant do this

or that; why things in life are not fair, or impossible; or perhaps that what happens to me is not my fault because others are somehow to blame etc. Such strategies are often described as the human condition, or simply known as conditioning. In time they end up dominating us and get worse if left unchecked. I call this choice of reality: the ˜acquired self because these are not naturally meant to be part of us for every day living, but if we choose to create these types of reality then we tend to acquire more and more of them and they end up controlling us and become self fulfilling. This reality is merely based on default reactions that ultimately rely on inbuilt stress responses intended only for fight, flight or freeze reactions. They are innate responses based on primitive survival mechanisms hardwired to take over in dangerous panic situations, such as predatory threat. Such automatic default responses require huge doses of adrenaline and other survival hormones being dumped into our systems to create high alert states of attention. They are excellent as survival strategies however they are not useful for every day life and in the longer term as they end up severely limiting us. But the problem is many people become dependant believing that this is simply cause and effect and therefore the only way to respond to their reality. They buy the idea that they have no control at all. So they become conditioned to such ways and so it is possible to end up building every day living on such acquired self strategies. If left unchallenged they become default pathways of coping with the world around us - a fixed reality. Under normal living situations we have no need to be constantly on high alert, or rely on such limiting ways of being. Such strategies will never enable us to operate at our very best, but their addictive nature means that we never get out of their grip and so if we dont break out of the habitualness of our acquired self we end up living mediocre lives.! At the other end of the mental slider however we can create realities that rely on completely different mindsets, attitudes and internal strategies that are highly resourceful. By pushing

our imaginary slider controller to the right instead, means developing strategies that enable us to be return to our authentic self. When we do this we can be at our very best and get the most from our lives. These strategies rely on us feeling good about ourselves instead. To access these we have deserve the right to use them and overcome the conditioning of our acquired self. However by understanding and applying a set of principles we can readily access our âauthentic self. It is not difficult, they require purposeful intention to do so. These principles are embodied in our collective conscious as human beings, so deep, deep down we all know our authentic self exists. But the problem is: what are these principles and how can we access them to be return to our authentic self? In addition, the limiting affects of our conditioning mentioned earlier get in our way too, so for many of us, we also have to deliberately re-learn how to move away from the conditioning of our acquired self before we can then return to our authentic self more of the time. The reason why it is so important to access our authentic self is because it is only then that we can truly be unique and play to our strengths and be the person each of us is meant to be. You see each and every one of us has a unique and different way of being in this life and the only way of deserving the right to become this is to return to our authentic self. The good news is however that the principles of how to access our authentic self can be easily learned. ! I believe that developing ˜authentic self strategies is the number one key factor in being successful in life. If you ask some of the most successful people on this planet they will acknowledge the same thing: the vital importance

of relying on resourceful mindsets and attitudes and that their success ultimately comes from believing in themselves and their ability to succeed. Here is an easy formula to define this principle in simple terms...! Success in life = Authentic Self Acquired Self! Therefore in order to be successful you have to deliberately and purposefully maximise your ability to access your authentic self and at the same time minimise and reduce your dependence on the conditioning of your acquired self. ! So back to our mental slider analogy... each and every one of us has control of our own mental slider. With this mental slider we create our reality, however some realities are much more successful than others. The question is which reality to do you want to create for yourself? So which way are you going to choose to slide your mental slider? In subsequent articles I will develop the above formula in more detail and uncover the strategies to enhance your authentic self and minimise the controlling effects of the acquired self. Next month I will begin by outlining to you simple practical step by step approaches how you can return to your authentic self and create realities that create success. Smaller property developers, have the same problem as you, a lack of cash when it’s needed most. They accept this as normal and carry on doing what failed yesterday, expecting it’ll be better tomorrow. The first problem is raising the money to buy the land. Why not bring the owners in on a profit share? “Your supplier is a business partner, not a drain on your cash”. The next hurdle is raising cash on time to do the building to the right quality. Delays mean that the Trades have all disappeared off to other sites; you’ll just have to wait your turn again. “Everyone else is looking after their cashflow, why aren’t you?” A splash of bad weather and the 12 weeks to actually build the house takes on average 26 weeks overall. Who pays for all those extra weeks? “How long does your business hold stock/work-in-progress?” When you come to sell, they don’t like the details; you agree to pay for alterations. With matched cashflow, you could have sold off-plan to the purchaser’s requirements. “How will you speed the cash coming in?” Yes, I’ll register for more information: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/R7SPSJB

“Lane Sheppard” is a leading locally based decorating company with almost 70 years history behind it. Founded by John Lane in 1946 with the aim of providing a highquality decoration service to private and commercial customers, Lane Sheppard still has the same mission that it was founded with. The company takes on work for private individuals as well as commercial clients and works across the Midlands region and beyond. Family businesses often have a different set of considerations than commercial companies. “Our bottom line isn’t profit at the expense of quality or customer satisfaction” says Thomas Lane, the company’s Managing Director when I interview him. “Our ultimate aim isn’t to achieve huge profits; it’s to ensure the succession of the business from one generation to the next. In order to do this, we have to work hard to keep our customers happy. One fact that delights me is that over 70% of our work comes from either repeat customers or from recommendations. Nothing gives me greater satisfaction than knowing we have done a good job.” Lane Sheppard has an approach to work that is focused on client satisfaction. Thomas tells me “we know that the best advocate for our organisation is a happy client. We give the same dedication to detail and quality to every one of clients, regardless of size or budget.” Their highly skilled craftsmen have worked on projects for the National Trust as well as a number of local churches and religious buildings. Walking around Derbyshire, Thomas and his father Colin can point to many examples of the Company’s work, including work done for the Chatsworth Estate. “The quality of our work is a testament to the quality of our craftsmen. We would not be able to produce the stunning work we do without the staff we have. We value training and development and are very good at retaining our staff members. Most of our craftsmen started their working lives with us as apprentices and have stayed ever since” Thomas tells me. The services that Lane Sheppard provides go beyond merely painting and decorating. “We work very much with an end picture in mind when we start any job. We get to know our clients and understand from them what they want the finished article to look like, from that, we can then advise as necessary in terms of paints or colours for exam-

ple. Sometimes a client will give us a very specific brief whereas other times they need assistance choosing a specification, and this is something that we can help with”. The company transitioned from one generation to the next recently, with Colin Lane passing over the day-to-day management of the business to his son, Thomas. As Lane Sheppard moves into its third-generation I ask what plans to change the business Thomas has. “My brother and I are very aware that we have been given the family business at a very interesting time, my mother and father worked hard to ensure we weathered the economic downturn, and came through it strong-

er than ever. Some things will inevitably change as time moves on, but most things will stay the same. Our insistence on quality, our commitment to customer satisfaction, and the high-standards we set ourselves; these things will remain just as important to us as they were to my parents and my grandparents.”

Lane Sheppard can be contacted on 01623 625 381 or via email at office@lanesheppard. co.uk. Their website w w w. l a n e s h e p p a r d . co.uk showcases some of their work.

A 15-year-old boy was walking along Gladstone Street with two friends when a man cycled up and blocked their path. The offender was then verbally

abusive to the victim and demanded to know the time. When the victim took out his iPod to check, the robber grabbed it and punched the boy to make him let it go. He then cycled away while the victim gave chase. The robber was white, about 5ft 8ins, of slim build with short, blond

hair. He was described as having a drawn or sunken face with deep set eyes. He wore jeans, a light grey cap with pink lettering and a dark jacket with a hood, and was riding a dark blue or purple bike. Police have issued three CCTV stills of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident, which happened at about 4.50pm

He was then told to hand over his valuables but, after trying to flag down a passing car, managed to escape.

LEARNING TO RIDE By Fiona Holton

So, you want to learn to ride? Your first step is to find a riding school in your local area that is either British Horse Society (BHS) or Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS) approved – this assures you that the important safety standards are in place and that there are qualified instructors and sufficient facilities to make your experience of riding as enjoyable and as safe as possible but don’t let that make you think you will never fall off a horse - horses are not machines and no matter how good your instructor is, they cannot guarantee your absolute safety – Like any animal, horses can be unpredictable and riding them is voluntary so you have to accept the potential hazards and risks that come with handling and riding. Having said that, the standards set out by these societies are an extremely good guidance. If you are a beginner, you need a quiet horse/pony that is the correct size for you and a friendly, patient instructor to get you started! You’ll probably find it easier to start off with a few private lessons before considering going into a group. One-to-one lessons can help to make people feel at ease with their horses

and to progress at a rate that is comfortable for them. In a group, the attention is divided a little between each person in the group so move to group sessions when you are confident to do so. Most riding schools can start children from age 5 years and upwards in the lead rein groups where all the children are led by an instructor. When they can rise to the trot in balance, they can come off the lead rein and move up to next group. Rides are usually graded according to ability so everyone moves up a group as their ability increases. So before you start to learn, make sure you do some homework - look on websites, make some phone calls and be confident with the person you speak to on the phone – ask them lots of questions. If you hope to progress to a higher level, enquire whether

your riding school have both indoor and outdoor schools, cross country courses, showjumping courses, dressage facilities and instructors who are a little higher qualified – a good standard of instruction to get started would be a British Horse Society Preliminary Instructor (BHSPI) or British Horse Society Assistant Instructor (BHSAI) which will take you a little further. Riding is for pleasure – so enjoy it!! Two of their foster children have special needs so the family have learnt how to do Makaton signing with them. “Our foster children came to us three years ago with severe neglect. When we got the little boys it was horrendous; they were so dirty, smelly, they had never had a bath or brushed their teeth. Then when we took the baby’s clothing off to wash him his skin fell off where it had become so dry; it was just so awful. We managed to give the baby a bottle but we realised there was no response from him: there was no eye contact,

he didn’t blink, and he didn’t turn round to noise. We thought there was something seriously wrong. We didn’t know if he was deaf or blind, or both. It turned out he could hear but he shut his own body down because of the neglect. With a lot of love, a lot of patience and a lot of stimulating toys he is now a happy little boy. He runs about, he smiles when he sees me and runs into my arms. It is just amazing to see what he has come from; it’s beautiful. He’s such a lovely little boy. In three years we have made a huge difference to all of their lives. The oldest one couldn’t speak at all, he just clapped and pointed at things. He was scared to go out, he was frightened of men, but now he has built up a relationship with my husband and my son, which is so special for him. He is

now beginning to trust and will let people cuddle him and love him.”

NEW MARKHAM DEVELOPMENT BRINGS JOBS BOOST FOR

UNEMPLOYED

A new development bringing more than 60 jobs to Markham Vale is helping to boost the Derbyshire economy having taken on 20 local unemployed people, most of whom are aged 18-24. Euro Garages, one of the leading UK independent forecourt operators, worked with Derbyshire County Council and Job Centre Plus to help recruit staff for the development which is due to open on the council’s flagship regeneration site next week. Facilities will include a new Shell petrol forecourt including for HGVs, SPAR convenience store, Subway, Greggs and a Starbucks Drive-Thru together with public toilets, seating area and a free cash machine. The Shell petrol forecourt and Subway will be open 24 hours a day – not all facilities as previously stated. Councillor Joan Dixon, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs, Economy and Transport, said: “It is great news that Euro Garages has decided to set up at Markham bringing

another 63 jobs to the area and we are pleased we were able to help unemployed people find work at the new site, including young people. “Markham Vale is going from strength to strength attracting more companies to Derbyshire because of the site’s location in the centre of England and its excellent transport links.” Ilyas Munshi, Commercial Director at Euro Garages, said: “Markham Vale Services is an exciting addition to our national estate portfolio of nearly 180 forecourt retail sites and it is the first development where we have partnered up with Henry Boot Developments. “Euro Garages have been actively supported by stakeholders including Derbyshire County Council and local agencies with a view to delivering much needed jobs and economic prosperity. In summary, we want local people and commuters in and around Derbyshire to have access to world-class facilities.” The county council has invested £77 million to reclaim the former mining area at Markham,

between Chesterfield and Bolsover, with the long term aim of creating 5,000 jobs. Working with development partner Henry Boot Development Limited, in the last year alone the council has lined-up developments promising to bring 500 jobs to the site. Vivienne Clements, Director of Henry Boot Developments comments: “The opening of Euro Garages at Markham Vale is the next piece of the jigsaw

in delivering a comprehensive offer for existing and new occupiers together with their work force.”Last month the Government announced plans to expand Markham Vale Enterprise Zone bringing enterprise status to another 18 hectares of land

on Markham Vale and offering benefits for businesses setting up in the area including tax breaks from Government. And in February, Markham

Vale received a £14.2m boost after successfully bidding for Government cash to open up prime economic development land.

Mar Menor Golf, Murcia The Mar Menor Golf Course is not a long course considering its par 72 but with the perfectly manicured native grasses, flowering shrubs, palm trees and the addition of the newly designed lake with its sand leading to the water’s edge, which is included in 3 of the 18 holes, perfect accuracy and precision will be required. Playing the 2nd hole, which is Par 3, the natural topography of the course will quickly give you a taste of the additional challenges this course offers, anything short of a shot finding the very centre of the green can find you playing even further shots off edges of the rough, or the strategically placed bunker at the side of the green. Oceanico Millennium Golf Course Oceanico Millennium golf course is a conventional 18 hole, par 72 course, designed and created by Martin Hawtree in the year 2000. Located in Vilamoura, the course has plenty to offer golf enthusiasts of all levels and ages, providing a challenging yet fun game for all to play whether it be serious or casual. The beautifully manicured greens make for a perfect putting experience – as long as you notice that the natural topography of the land will force you to really think about the shot you make and will encourage you to have a sharp, precise aim. The course is fairly open, although the 3rd and 7th holes wind between pine trees and are similar to the neighbouring fairways of the Oceanico Old Course and Oceanico Pinhal. In this woodland area, the fairways are narrower and require greater accuracy and a sharper eye - while the rest of the course has a clear landscape enriched by lakes at the 4th, 17th and 18th holes. The arrival of the Oceanico Millennium course made Vilamoura one of the main - if not the main - European golf destinations. This luxury course is just a five minute drive away from the bustling centre of Lagos, which offers a variety of activities including dolphin-watching, boat trips and beautiful sandy beaches. In the evening, you can choose from a vast range of

golfing breaks and quiet getaways with its beautiful sandy beaches and numerous golf courses. Visits to ancient castles and sleepy fishing villages are like a step back in time but the more cosmopolitan towns offer a wide range of restaurants, bars, casinos and great nightlife.

Derby County Play-offs The Rams will finish in third place in the Sky Bet Championship following Saturday’s 4-2 home victory over Watford and will face either Reading, Wigan, Brighton or Blackburn in a twolegged play-off semi-final next month ahead of a potential trip to Wembley where they would compete for a place in the Barclays Premier League. Derby were 14th in the table when McClaren succeeded Nigel Clough at the start of October. They climbed into the top-six at the beginning of December and have been there ever since. The turnaround has even surprised McClaren, who has described the club’s third-place finish as a “great achievement”. With Watford leading early on through Troy Deeney’s finish, they chased the possibility of a playoff place but the first of two Jeff Hendrick goals levelled the score before Craig Forsyth’s drive put the Rams in front. Marco Cassetti was sent off and after Mathias Ranegie had equalised the score, Hendrick and Chris Martin, won it late on. Deeney had given Watford the perfect start as he ran onto a pass from Cristian Battocchio to lift the ball over Lee Grant and claim his 23rd goal of the season but Derby replied with Hendrick, latching onto an attempted clearance from Daniel Pudil to cleanly score the ball past goalie, Jonathan Bond from 12 yards. Jamie Ward was later denied by Bond as the home side continued to dominate and with an hour gone they pushed ahead when Craig Bryson set up Forsyth to fire home. Watford were then reduced to 10 when Cassetti received a second yellow card, results elsewhere also crushed their hopes of a top-six finish. But the Hornets did manage to equalise just two minutes later when substitute Ikechi Anya crossed for Ranegie to head past Grant at the far post. Both sides then had chances to go in front but it was Derby who persevered again, thanks to a magnificent goal from Hendrick, who blasted a 25yard shot past Bond. Top scorer Martin, then got in on the act as he crashed the ball home from a tight angle for his 23rd goal of the season. This victory over Watford has resulted in Derby seeing themselves equal their highest points tally in a league campaign of 84 - a figure which was last achieved during the 2006/2007 campaign when they last won promotion. A point or more from the final league fixture against Leeds United at Elland Road at the weekend would see the Rams set a new club record.

16-goal midfielder thanks supporters for their votes after collecting the Jack Stamps award. The fans have been outstanding with me ever since I signed for the club.” Craig Bryson Midfielder Craig Bryson has paid a glowing tribute to the Derby County supporters, after being announced as the club’s Jack Stamps trophy winner. The Scotsman fended off strong competition from leading scorer Chris Martin and Supporters’ Club Player of the Year Jake Buxton to secure award, while the trophy makes him only the third player, alongside Steve Buckley and Mark Wright, to have won the accolade on two occasions. Bryson, who picked up the award ahead of the Rams’ 4-2 victory over Watford at the iPro Stadium, was eager to thank the Derby faithful for their support over the course of the 2013/14 season, a campaign the 27-year-old feels is his most successful throughout his professional career.

He told Rams Player: “It is obviously a massive achievement in my career to win the award for the second time in three years - I am absolutely delighted. “I would like to thank the supporters that voted, it could have gone to near enough any player in the team, so I am just delighted that I won it. “The fans have been outstanding with me ever since I signed for the club. I am delighted to win it. It is a great honour. “I think this has been my best season by far and it has obviously been the club’s best season since I have been here too. Finishing third, to get into the play-offs is outstanding and some of the performances have been excellent this season. “Hopefully we can keep this momentum going into the playoffs.” Goals from Chris Martin, Craig

Forsyth and a double from Jeff Hendrick completed the scoring for the Rams as they ran out 4-2 winners over Watford, and even though the side netted four, Bryson insists the side can be even more clinical in front of goal. He added: “We know that by finishing third we have not achieved anything yet. The only thing we have achieved is having a slight advantage in the second league - if it even is an advantage. “I think we need to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. We had chances today where players, including myself, should have had a shot and we have tried to pass it and walk it into the net, so we need to be a bit more ruthless. “We feel as though we can score on any attack we go on, so we know if we do concede or go behind, we feel that we can still score and win the game.”
