Teaching and learning You will learn through lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. You will also have input from experienced university staff, school practitioners and a wide range of expert guest speakers. We also have specialist primary education facilities which include purpose built teaching classrooms. There is a diverse range of assessments for this course. You will produce reports, essays, presentations, personal reflections and take tests. When you’re in school there are practical assessments focused on the Teachers Standards (2012).

About the course This course leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). We’re passionate about making sure you’re ready for your teaching career, so you will undertake an assessed placement in a different school at each stage of the course, with the opportunity to be placed in a special school. This will help to build your skills and experience with different year groups. You will also receive mentor support from experienced teachers, some of whom are previous students.
Stage THREE
Duration and mode of study: You can study this course full time for three years or you can take an alternative four year route. You will choose your route in the second year.
Spring
Entry requirements: You will usually need 300 UCAS points from accepted qualifications (see www.derby.ac.uk/entryreqs for a full list). You will also need six GCSE’s at grade C or above (including English, maths and science) and you will need to have successfully passed your QTS skills tests in maths and English.

We received ‘Outstanding’ results from the most recent Ofsted reports for this course. In the 2013 National Student Survey, 100% of our students were satisfied overall with this course. You will have the opportunity to get involved in lots of experiences to further develop your understanding and skills, including charity work, community focused developments and partnership school projects. You could also personalise this course by choosing a specialist subject pathway, choosing an alternative setting to gain expertise in or electing to study at masters level in your optional fourth year.

What you will cover You will develop your subject knowledge and academic knowledge in all of the National Curriculum subjects and there are opportunities for you to personalise the course by choosing a subject pathway. Currently we offer English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Creative Arts. Additional information To ensure that you’re fully prepared for your teaching career, you will have the opportunity to broaden your experiences through overseas school visits to learn more about education in different countries and cultures. You can also
visit museums to work alongside other professionals who educate children in different settings and visit early years settings to learn more about early childhood development.
