The spa town of Buxton is in Derbyshire, in the middle of the beautiful Peak District countryside. Buxton is on the edge of the Peak District National Park with moorland, woodland, and hills, yet is close to the popular tourist towns of Ashbourne, Bakewell, and Matlock. The town is also close to some of Europe’s most prestigious visitor attractions with Alton Towers and Chatsworth House both just a 30-minute drive away. Buxton has a number of prestigious event venues, including the Devonshire Dome at the University’s own campus, the Opera House, and the Pavilion Arts Centre. In the summer, Buxton gets ‘festival fever’, hosting a variety of high quality festivals including the Buxton Opera Festival and Fringe Theatre Festival. In the winter season, this continues with the Four Four Time Festival of Live Music and the Buxton Adventure Festival, so there are numerous learning experiences for our students throughout the year.

RESEARCH

that’s relevant to the real world All our research has a purpose: that’s why we’re making a difference to our students – and the industries they will work in.

We believe that applied research is an essential feature of a university like ours. All our research groups combine the best of both worlds by having strong connections with Derbyshire and the Peak District, as well as with high profile national and international organisations. Their work often contributes directly to the development of the industries we serve. Based at the Buxton campus, we have around 30 active researchers, who are nationally and internationally respected for their unique contributions in a range of areas. During 2012/2013 our academics produced 20 conference papers, 14 journal articles and 11 book chapters.

Staff and students also have an opportunity to share best practice and disseminate their latest research findings at our annual research conference. We host a popular public lecture series delivered by our extensive team of Visiting Professors. In addition, we frequently welcome key industry professionals to give lectures – recent guests have included high profile chefs from India and China – while our Sports team regularly work with some of the world’s top sports people. What’s the key to our success? We think it’s our ability to work closely and strategically with a selected group of partners from the commercial world.

Examples of research by our doctoral students are:  Developing ecotourism projects in Malawi  Helping to model a new tourism marketing strategy for Libya with an emphasis on social media  Analysing the relationship between the management skills required by events industry managers and those developed by undergraduates, and linking this to curriculum design  New global training environments for the Thai hospitality sector  Effects of combining plyometrics, and elastic and free-weight resistance on the development of strength and power on 1RM squat performance and EMG muscle activation during eccentric/ concentric contractions.

LEADING RESEARCHERS

Professor David Crouch’s research and writing cross a number of fields of cultural geography, social anthropology, cultural and visual studies, tourism, media, and art theory.

These are connected through an attention to life and space that includes landscape, everyday life and its tourism, community involvement, and the work of artists. David is an active member of the Culture, Lifestyle and Landscape Research Group and the Identity, Conflict and Representation Research Centre. David is very widely published in academic journals and books and is a member of the editorial boards for the following academic journals: International Journal of Heritage Studies, Leisure Studies, Tourism Geographies, and Tourism and Cultural Change. He had three book chapters published in 2011 and regularly shows his art at galleries throughout the UK. David’s current research relates to how people construct their ideas and feelings about places and spaces. This work culminated in his latest book Flirting with Space: Journeys and Creativity, which he completed in 2010. The book builds new critical syntheses of the intertwining of space and life and conceptualises the state of flux that exists in space as we make our way through the everyday journeys of life.

S t ud ent p ro f ile

S tu d e n t p r o f ile

Fannice Maloba

Chih-Hua Cheng

MA International Hospitality Management

My name is Fannice Maloba, I’m 52 and a mum of three. I was a senior lecturer at a hospitality school in Kenya for a number of years, but to progress to teaching degree and masters level students, I needed an MA.

The one-year programme in MA International Hospitality Management at the University of Derby Buxton contained many elements that I could apply directly to the work that I do. I felt that it was the course that would contribute most to my career. I’d never been to the UK before, so the relatively small size of Buxton was ideal for me. I would have felt overwhelmed by a big city centre university, so the welcoming Buxton campus really appealed. It’s small and friendly, with well-qualified staff always available to support their students.

I decided to study with the University of Derby Buxton after I completed my studies with the Swiss Hotel Management School in Switzerland: the two institutions have a long-standing partnership.

The international team helped me to settle in quickly, answered all of my questions and introduced me to other students which meant I was able to make friends easily. I’m really enjoying my studies here and I know that this year will make a big difference to my future. The programme is well structured, the modules are informative and there are plenty of opportunities to put theory into practice, all contributing to the skills that a manager needs. I’d highly recommend the University of Derby Buxton to anyone looking to further their education and career.

I started to learn English when I was eight years old and because the education system is so different from my home country Taiwan, I was encouraged to study in an English-speaking country.

I also spend many evenings with the other international students for dinner or just tea and coffee. Because we are from so many different countries we like to cook international cuisine and share it.

My sister is also here, so I will take care of her and help her settle in before I move on. She decided to further her studies in Buxton after seeing how much I enjoyed myself. It helps that the cost of living is lower here, and we feel safer than we would in a big city: we have a nice, small international student community so we practise our English a lot!

When the weather is fine, the Pavilion Gardens, our park in Buxton, is the best place to be and I go there to play Frisbee or American football with my friends. We often go to one of the nearby pubs for a pint and dinner afterwards. The weekends offer the perfect opportunity to go hiking and explore the Peak District, which is very close, or to go on day trips to Manchester which is only an hour away by train.

During the week I take part in volleyball and basketball with the other international students – we play at Harpur Hill, the University’s sports hall. Sport is a great way to bring international students together.

The international team helped me to settle in quickly, answered all of my questions and introduced me to other students which meant I was able to make friends easily.

It was a dream for me to come here and improve my abilities and perspectives, which is important when working in the international hospitality industry.

S t ud ent p ro f ile Kathryn Dowthwaite MA International Spa Management

My name’s Kathryn, and I’ve just completed the MA International Spa Management course at the University of Derby Buxton. I chose this course because although my practical experience was good, I needed to move on in my career.

I needed to improve my knowledge with a postgraduate qualification in order to move on in my career. I was keen to get a better understanding of the theory and the management concepts that will see me progress to a senior management position in the spa industry.

The support I’ve had from the staff and lecturers at Derby has been fantastic. Embarking on the masters degree was a big jump. Understanding critical analysis and research methodologies, and learning how to use academic journals were challenging, but I’m so pleased with my results.

I started my career as a beauty therapist and have worked in spas internationally in places such as Australia, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Bermuda, and on cruise ships. I worked my way up to spa management level, and most recently have also taken up teaching and training roles in a further education college.

Studying towards this MA in Buxton has had a great impact on my future and has given me the underpinning knowledge needed to progress in the growing and evolving spa industry. The course also helped my personal skills: I’m confident now to present at conferences and network within the industry, and it’s certainly increased my business acumen.

During my MA I attended the University two days a week but continued working for two days a week, lecturing at college. The programme included some block study weeks. I continued living in Hertfordshire for half the week and stayed at a friend’s house whilst at University. This took a lot of commitment and support from my friends and family.

I hope to contribute to the spa industry by sharing my experience, inspiring others, carrying on with further research, and possibly even publications.

I studied both the BA (Hons) Adventure Tourism and the MA Tourism Management at the University of Derby Buxton. Since leaving, I have set up my own company called Venture Sketch which is a marketing and business development consultancy for outdoor activities and travel.

Among the great things about living in Buxton are the endless opportunities for getting outdoors and doing the activities you enjoy. I was President of the University’s Canoe and Kayak Club and – apart from it being a great experience, with a lot of fun and the chance to make new friends – some of the skills that I developed have also been really beneficial.

The courses at Buxton gave me the chance to do practical projects and put into practice some of the theory that I was learning. We worked with tourism businesses in the area, such as Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, and it was so useful to get that real world experience. It looked great on my CV for interviews and it’s helped me in my career.

I feel honoured to have been asked by the University to come back and talk about my career. It’s good to share my experiences with current students and give them some pointers for what to do when they leave the University. I tell them to make the most of their time here and to steer their studies in the direction they would like to take. There’s a lot of flexibility so you can ensure that the modules give you all the experience you need for your future career.

There’s a lot of flexibility so you can ensure that the modules give you all the experience you need for your future career.

I did the BA (Hons) Travel and Tourism here before moving on to the MA Tourism Management. I am now working as a PR consultant for an agency in Germany where I am responsible for tourism destinations. I would recommend the course because I enjoyed studying on a smaller campus in a smaller town, especially as I was an international student. It was easier to make contacts and get your studies off to a good start.

I’ve enjoyed coming back to the University to give a guest lecture, telling current students about my job, what I did after graduation and my journey so far. It was also good to say ‘hi’ to my old lecturers. My tips to anyone wanting to join the tourism industry would be to gain work experience while you’re studying, create a strong CV that presents you well, and network as much as possible.

S t ud ent p ro f ile Yasmin Rajab PhD (new route)

My name is Yasmin and I’m originally from Kuwait but now live in Pickering, West Yorkshire after obtaining a first class honours degree in Public Relations and Events Management from the University of Derby Buxton.

My dream began when I attended the New English School, Kuwait. At my school there were children of more than 55 nationalities, so I really got to understand many different traditions and cultures. Most summers we would travel to England to visit my grandparents, so I had a strong bond with the UK and a desire to study here. While in Kuwait I did some voluntary work at my school and assisted at the local museum with some exhibitions. The head of the PR department recommended I study PR or events management. The University of Derby Buxton had the course I’d been looking for, and a great reputation.

Working in teams is the norm in the workplace, so I chose this area for my final year’s Independent Scholarship. It was fundamental in terms of my future plans too. My parents travelled from Kuwait to watch as I graduated with 300 of my colleagues. The ceremony was held at the University’s Grade II* listed Devonshire Dome Campus. I was delighted to be awarded the ViceChancellor’s Prize for Academic Excellence as well. I’m proud to have achieved all that I have here at Buxton, and I know my parents are too.

I think it was during my second year that I came to understand professional development as a way of developing personally as well as moving to the next stage of my career.

The University of Derby Buxton had the course I’d been looking for, and a great reputation.
