About the course This course will provide you with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and will prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching all National Curriculum subjects. Depending on your preference and prior experience, you may choose to specialise in teaching Early Years (3-7 year olds), Primary (5-11 year olds) or Later Years (7-11 year olds, with a possible French specialism for suitable applicants). The course will also provide you with 60 credits at masters level. Teaching and learning You will be taught in our Kirtley building, which has specialist teacher training facilities. You will have lots of opportunities to practise your teaching skills, with the support of fellow trainees, and you will engage with two assessed teaching placements to provide you with the experience you need. Throughout these placements you will be supported by our ‘outstanding’ trained school mentors and link tutors. Your assessed placements will be complemented by enhanced placements, which will broaden your school experiences in key ways, for example in special schools.

Specialist Subject Enhancement

Additional information It may be possible for you to complete this course ‘flexibly’ over two years. If you choose this option, we will develop a personalised training plan for you and you will take half the modules in the first year and the other half the next, with one teaching block per year. The key to becoming a successful teacher is secure subject knowledge. We’ll support and develop your abilities and confidence to deliver all primary curriculum subjects in your teaching. University sessions are highly interactive, intellectually stimulating and professionally supportive, with regular seminars, tutorials and workshops as well as more traditional lectures.

Your career By choosing teaching as a career, you will have chosen an important and satisfying profession as well as a challenging and rewarding journey through life. As you will have gained 60 credits at masters level, you will be able to fast track to stage two of a masters degree, quickly progressing your professional development.

I feel that doing this course has not only provided me with the knowledge and skills I need for teaching, but has helped me on a personal level to be more confident and to constantly better myself. Tracy Brown Graduate
