You can specialise in furniture design or eco-design, and we offer you a great opportunity to develop your design skills. Our students and graduates are now regularly winning national prizes. Teaching and learning You will have a mixture of lectures, tutorials, group work and self-directed study. Much of your time will be spent in the studio, workshop or CAD facilities. Learning strategies include practical studiobased project work with formal lectures, seminars and debates to embed underpinning theoretical knowledge. We demonstrate relevance of the curriculum to the product design profession through industry learning opportunities, live project work, competitions, teamwork, cultural field study visits and visiting speakers.

About the course This course has its emphasis on industrial design and the relationship between people and products. This is an exciting subject area - it’s where art meets science in the quest to make better, more attractive products that people want.

Options Stage Two You will choose from: Eco Design Furniture Design. Diploma in Professional Practice (optional) You will study: Applied Professional Practice Contemporary Issues in Professional Practice. Stage Three You will choose from: Advanced Eco Design Advanced Furniture Design. Additional information We’ve got extensive computing facilities linked to rapid prototyping systems and large format printing at our Markeaton Street site, which means that you will be working with the latest computer aided design software and develop the knowledge and skills that are essential to work in industry.

You can take an optional work placement between stages two and three, which will give you a fantastic opportunity to gain real-world experience. You will also get an additional qualification – the Diploma in Professional Practice. If you don’t have the appropriate qualifications to start this course, you can apply to study our Year Zero course first. Your career Our graduates have shown that there is a wealth of career opportunities available to product designers, in the UK and abroad. This course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to start your career in the industry. This course is being re-accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers, which means that it’s recognised as high quality by employers, and you will get professional recognition for your studies.
