Why choose this course? If you choose psychology as the major subject in your joint honours degree, and achieve the minimum standard of second class honours, the course confers eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership of the British Psychological Society. This is the first step to becoming a professional psychologist. You can combine this subject with a range of other subjects to keep your options open and study what you’re most interested in. In the 2013 National Student Survey, 93% of our Psychology students were satisfied with the teaching on the course. About the course Psychology is the scientific study of human thought and behaviour. You’ll cover the social, developmental, cognitive and biological dimensions of behaviour and the applications of psychology in a wide range of areas. Our staff are active in research, so you’ll be kept right up to date with current developments. Teaching and learning We want you to get the most out of studying and learn in the most effective way. You’ll take part in lectures, seminars, workshops, group activities and practical work and have the opportunity to work in innovative ways using web forums and virtual learning environments, such as Second Life. Recent quality inspectors praised us ‘for being at the forefront of technology enhanced learning’. As a joint honours student you’ll be supported by Academic Counsellors who can give you guidance across your overall degree. You’ll engage in a variety of assessments such as exams, essays, debates and oral presentations. You’ll also have the opportunity for group work and individually submitted assessments.

Additional information We’ve got excellent facilities, including high specification computing labs with software for designing experiments, and a range of psychological recording equipment. Our observation suite has video recording facilities and a state of the art eye tracker, which allows you to analyse eye movements. We’re not involved in animal research.

Your career This course will prepare you for further professional training in psychology. You’ll develop transferable skills, such as good communication and IT skills, which are invaluable for a variety of careers outside psychology. Previous graduates have qualified in clinical and educational psychology, enrolled for PhDs and worked in other professions where psychological knowledge is relevant, such as teaching or working in mental health settings.
