The HeART of Our Community As my family recently made the trek to a snowy and cold Chicago for the holidays we enjoyed all of the arts and cultural happenings that a large city had to offer. While we had a great time in the Windy City, I can honestly say that I’m glad to be back home in East Tennessee where the entertainment equals what we encountered in many of the venues up north. After our visit to the Art Institute of Chicago and to Buddy Guy’s
Blues Club, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are in Oak Local Arts Ridge to have a quality art museum and so many performing arts choices in such a small Jim town. I strongly suggest a visit to Chicago but please wait unDodson til the warmer months “brrrrr” ! Two months ago someone accidentally smashed into my nine-year old Mazda gray minivan. Is It Well With My Soul? Spiritual Health Checkup On November 22, 1873, ninety years before the Kennedy assassination, another family was devastated by their own tragic and unexpected loss. Horatio Spafford lost four daughters all at once. His wife, Anna, and his four daughters were on the ocean steamer Ville du Hauvre that collided
with the British iron ship, the Lockhearn in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Anna was rescued from that wreck unconscious, but she survived. The four daughters all drowned together. It took only twelve minutes for the ship to sink, and only 81 of the 307 passengers and crew members survived.

It has been recognized by the medical field for a number of years now that one’s physical health is impacted by the emotional, mental, and spiritual health a person possesses. Allow me to suggest the following aspects of seeing whether or not it is well with our soul.

What do I periodically need to attend to so that I can catch something before it gets out of control?

Heart Health for the New Year Welcome to 2014! Most of us recognize the need for renewed resolution and resolve in our quest for better health. The American Heart Association (AHA) in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) delivered great news to ring in the new year ; heart disease deaths and stroke deaths have declined 31 % and 38 % since 2010, giving us the notion we’re getting it mostly right. “Right” to the AHA is defined by a seven point scoring system ; 1) No tobacco 2) Body Mass Index below 25 3) Daily high level of physical activity 4) cholesterol under 200 5)Systolic blood pressure under 120 6) Fasting blood glucose under 100 7) Greater than three servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Unfortunately, over seventy percent of American adults are obese or overweight, and our
children are not far behind in this ill-fated race for bigness. Diabetes causes accelerated aging of our arteries, including stiffening, clogging, and loss of responsiveness to internal controls – that defines atherosclerosis, the cause of the most prevalent heart disease coronary artery disease. Most adult diabetes can be prevented and treated by proper diet and exercise. Sadly, high calorie high carbohydrate food is available around the clock in most communities. As most of our jobs and lives now require more brain power than muscle power, calories eaten often exceed calories burned, and the excess is stored as fat! You know, we wear out the tires on our cars long before we wear out the shoes on our feet. I cannot over emphasize the imperative to pursue a low carbohydrate, low portion, low fat diet, and to exercise moderately for at least 30 minutes daily to avoid diabetes and to keep your heart healthy. If you are having trouble starting or maintaining diet and exercise programs, you may need some guidance, structure and coaching. It would be both healthy and wise to seek professional advice from you physician, dietician, local gym, and weight loss organization.

Navigating the Affordable Health Care Act We have all been hearing the terms, “Health Care Reform” or “Affordable Care Act” or “Obama Care” or ACA or PPACA floating around our country via cyberspace, news broadcasts, and in heated debates. With so many different titles, it is bound to add to the confusion. So first of all, let’s get the first obstacle out of the way: These are all the same thing. So how does it affect the masses, exactly? It affects people such as your Uncle with juvenile diabetes. Now because of the act, he cannot be turned down for health insurance because he already has a condition that requires medical care. Also, he won’t have to pay more for his coverage because of his medical needs. It does not matter if you have diabetes, MS, or RA or are currently receiv-

Bankruptcy - Spikes Between Now and April Bankruptcy filings tend to spike upward in March and April every year. I don’t think people owe more money during those months, but it has more to do with people getting tax refunds and using the money to try to get out of debt. Probably it has to do also with coming off the Christmas Holiday periods. People tend to be in better spirits dur-
ing the holidays. Worries are temporarily set aside—but then, comes January, they are faced with the flood of financial problems—creditors harassing telephone calls again, dunning letters, knocks on doors, followed by lawsuits, garnishments. Anyone with a lot of debts— more than they can see paying in a reasonable period of time—ought to set up an appointment with an attorney to
Legal
Jimmie Turner see if there’s any solutions for them, which would among other things, has to include looking at bankruptcy. People in debt should be mighty cautious dealing with organizations—espically if they’re out of state— claiming they’ll settle their debts after sending them money—frankly, I’ve seen a lot of money mysteriously disappear. Many lawyers do not handle bankruptcy because frankly it is kind of special area of the law. Bankruptcy involves a special federal court (The United States Bankruptcy Court) as well as special federal procedures -- such as using what is called a PACER electronic filing system—and a lot of special forms and procedures) and familiarity with the United States Bankruptcy Code and Rules and Regulations—frankly most lawyers do not want to deal with that and their offices are just not set up for it. They’d rather stick with automobile personal injury claims, wills and probate, contract drafting, criminal defense, divorces, in the paper world and things like that. When you get into bankruptcy court, you get into the “electric world of law.” In fact the federal courts are all electric, that is all is done online. There’s talk that Tennessee courts eventually will also go into the electric world where paper pleadings will be a thing of the past—as it is in bankruptcy court.
Fortunately quite a few lawyer handle bankruptcy law, and particularly consumer bankruptcy law, and many of them—including myself—offer a free first appointment to review financial information and give advice on whether b a n k ruptcy
might help. B a n k ruptcy is not a panacea for every financial problem. I’ve practice law several decades, and have handled many, many bankruptcy cases (as well as other kinds of cases.) When I first started handling them in l969, in many ways,
it was a simpler legal world than it is now. It was all paper. Carbon paper was used instead of the fancy copying/scanning machine I now own. Now, not only is it hard to get paper into the courts, but it’s also harder to get in at all—security guards x-ray the belongings of who goes into the courthouses and, for example, you can’t get in the bankruptcy court without a picture ID. Times have indeed changed. When I began practicing in the area of bankruptcy law, there wasn’t a bankruptcy judge. Hon. Clive Bare was the “Referee” in charge of bankruptcy proceedings, which was a unit of the Knoxville Eastern District of Tennessee—actually he was not a judge, but was a “referee,” an administrator of the bankruptcy cases, and would personally conduct the creditors meetings himself. The actual judge then was Judge Robert L. Taylor, a judge who had been appointed by Presi(See ‘Bank’ on page 47)

Small Adjustments for Big Results We make adjustments everyday of our lives. From the time we wake in the morning to the time we close our eyes at night to sleep we are constantly having to adjust different aspects of our lives to adapt. Depending on the East Tennessee weather we make adjustments to what we plan to wear that day in order to stay comfortable, whether that means warm, cool or dry is any one’s guess in this part of the world. Once we make it out of the house we sometimes have to adjust the route we take to work due to road construction or some other traffic concern. If you drive like me you constantly
have to adjust your rate of speed so that you don’t grab the attention of traffic police who seem overly concerned about my safety and well-being. During the course of any day we have to make adjustment to our schedules. Sometimes events we have planned have to be cancelled and rescheduled because of unforeseen circumstances that arise. While all of these adjustments may at times frustrate us they are a necessary response to daily stresses and they keep us well, functional and safe.

important and necessary in keeping us well and functional, it’s the specific Chiropractic adjustment to our spines. Have you ever heard the saying “you are as old as the health of your spine?” Well it’s true in more ways than one. The chiropractic adjustment is the only thing that can remove subluxations from our spines and allow us to live up There is another type of ad- to our potential. Subluxation justment that is far more is just a fancy word for stress or interference to our nervous system. This interference is caused when the vertebra shift and get stuck in a position that puts stress on the spinal cord and nerve roots. The presence of subluxations can decrease the normal function of any and/or all of our vital bodily organs WITHOUT CAUSING PAIN. Imagine tracing the nerve or group of nerves that are responsible for keeping your digestive system functioning and repairing itself. Now imagine severing those nerves. The digestive system couldn’t function normally and never would again. Now imagine tracing the same group of nerves and place something (vertebra) at their point of origin that would add pressure and stress them in a way that hinders or disrupts their functional output. This is how subluxations can affect our overall health and keep us from living up to our God given potential. A doctor of Chiropractic will check your spine for these subluxations and if they are present he/she will make the necessary adjustments to the spine, correcting the subluxations and realigning the spine removing the stress or interference from the central nervous system.

Since 100 million of us have hypertension, we all need to reduce our sodium chloride intake! For giving up the salt shaker, there are many herbal substitutes to satisfy a salt lover’s appetite. Tips (Continued from page 16) we spend every moment of our precious life running from one activity to the next we send ourselves into exhaustion. Many of us live our lives in two modes of operation, either on the go or in rest and recovery. Our lives are filled with responsibilities and obligations, endless “to do” lists, plus all of the things we treasure and love to do. Unfortunately, we spend so much time attending to everything on our “to do” list that many
of us end up feeling depleted and drained by the end of the day. There is little energy left for the things we love to do that really feed our spirit. Try to intentionally slow things down a little bit each day, this will help conserve your energy and not waste so much of it on “busy work”. You can slow down by scheduling down time into your day, even something as simple as closing your eyes at your computer for a minute or two at the top of each hour. Or, you can purposely choose to take the scenic route and relax and enjoy the ride. Other sug-

Foster one or more opportunities for slowness per day, keep it simple, and it will have a profound effect on your well-being. 9. Reduce packaged/processed founds & dining out- The foods that we buy in the grocery store aisles and the frozen foods section are filled with additives, preservatives, sugars, high amounts of sodium, and so on. We all know that it is not healthy for us to consume large amounts of packaged and processed foods. However, these foods have become the more convenient and accessible option for most Americans then actual real, whole foods. In the same way, we have become a culture of eating on the go and out in restaurants. It is
said that Americans eat out on an average of 4 to 5 times per week. For the most part, as consumers we really have no idea about the nutritional information of restaurant meals. Unless we do some research ahead of time, we do not know the caloric amount of the meal and certainly not quality of the ingredients. As a health coach, for any of my clients who are trying to lose weight and/or feel better the first thing we work on is reducing meals consumed in restaurants and processed foods. For many of us, this means a complete overhaul and lifestyle change. I suggest that people start small with this. Begin by making a commitment to cook at home a minimum of three nights a week. In addition, become educated on how to cook using whole and real foods and begin shopping more on the peripheral of the grocery store, rather than those middle aisles.
10. Work with a health coach- In modern society it is all too easy for our health and wellness to slip away from us. Things have become so fast paced and technologically oriented that we have forgotten about our bodies and ourselves. Most of us attend to our computers, automobiles, or other technological devices more than our bodies. When we lose touch with our health as a priority it can often seem overwhelming and we stay stuck, unable to make the necessary changes to feel better. In the same way you might hire an architect to help redesign your kitchen or bathroom, a health coach can support you in redesigning your health. A health coach is there to provide the guidance and support needed to make sustainable changes in diet, exercise routine, relationships, daily practice, and career. Your health coach will be there for you to ensure that you see the results that you want and become a healthier, happier you. The tips in this article are meant to be practiced slowly over time, it is not a race. Take one or two at a time and begin making small, manageable changes slowly for overall lasting benefit of good health. Hippocrates, the father of western medicine said, “The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well”. We each, already have within us the capacity for wellness and optimal health, and that is more powerful and sustainable then any supplements, diet drug, meal plan or anything else. Remember, keep it simple and return to the basics! Why and What is Permanent Cosmetics? What are Permanent Cosmetics? Permanent Cosmetic Makeup or “Micropigmentation” is a revolutionary procedure of applying micro insertions of natural pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. Used in both the medical and artistic fields for over 40 years, these pigments have an extensive record of safety and their safety is undisputed. Although Micropigmentation is a form of “tattooing” it is certainly a separate specialty within the field. The State of Tennessee is one of the few states which requires specialized training with unique standards in order to perform this service and demands a one year apprenticeship with a licensed instructor. At Beauty Redefined Medical Spa Salon, our Practitioners have completed all requirements demanded by
the State of Tennessee and have performed over 6,500 procedures. Many hours of advanced training and certifications have been awarded.

Stay Strong and Live Long How many times have you made the resolution to “get in shape”? Every year of your adult life, I bet. The phrase “getting in shape” is really just a catch-all for “I want to be strong and healthy so my body is capable of doing the things I want and need it to.” It includes too many aspects to mention, but aerobic exercise, nutrition, and strength training are definitely at the top of the list. All
three are important, but I have always been partial to strength training and here’s why. When it comes to Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), strength rules. Some examples include: getting up out of a chair; carrying in groceries; putting those groceries away, especially if they are heavy or on a high shelf; climbing stairs; house-cleaning; even washing your hair! Think about getting out of bed each morning, now there’s an activity we do every day that takes strength, both physical and mental. People who neglect strength training throughout the early years are the same ones who become increasingly dependent on others throughout the later years. If you want to stay self-reliant and independent, stay strong. In addition to helping you perform normal daily tasks safely and efficiently, there are a few other reasons why strength training ought to be on your “To Do” list. (1) It protects you against injuries such as sprains and strains, (3) It increases your resting metabolism, which helps in weight loss and/or maintenance, (4) It acts as a natural stress reliever, (5) It helps you sleep more soundly, and finally, (6) It can improve your appearance. Sounds simple, right? It can be, but unfortunately many people shy away from strength

Staples of a home gym include resistance bands or several sets of free weights in graduating increments, a mat or towel for doing crunches and other floor exercises, and an exercise ball, great for working on balance and stability. If you are watching your pennies and lack the cash for free weights or bands, there are many strength-building
exercises that can be done using only your body weight as resistance, including lunges, squats, abdominal crunches, push-ups, calf raises and chair dips. Each one of these exercises can be modified to fit any fitness level. I have trained people in their beds recovering from s u r g e r y, d o n e strength classes with groups of women 70+ years old, and worked with musclebound guys who could bench press two of me without breaking a sweat. Strength training really is for everyone. Life’s Big Events; Life Changes have Tax Consequences Life changes have tax consequences, from birth through death. During your lifetime, you may get a job, go to school, get married, start a business, change jobs, have children, send children to college, buy and/or sell a home, get divorced, contribute to a retirement plan, or draw money out of a retirement plan. Here are some tax implications of certain life-changing events. Married... or Not? • If you are married as of December 31st of a year, you are considered married for the whole year. What’s Your Retirement Vision When you start out in your career, you’re probably not thinking much about retirement. At this point, your picture of a “retirement lifestyle” may be, at best, hazy, hidden as it is behind a veil of experiences you’ve yet to encounter. But as you move through the years, your view of retirement comes into clearer and closer focus — and this vision will have a big impact on your savings and investment strategies. Consequently, to create and implement those strategies effectively, you’ll need to define your retirement vision by identifying its various parts. Here are some to consider:
• Travel — If you’re like many people, you may dream of Financial traveling during your retireAdvice ment. But what does “travel” mean to you? Should you sell your home and “downsize”? Or do you want to keep your current residence and possibly purchase a second home, such as a condominium, in another part of the country? Obviously, you’ll need to factor in these choices when you think about how to invest before you retire and how to manage your withdrawals from your 401(k), IRA and other accounts during your retirement. • Volunteer activities — You might think that your volunteer activities during retirement won’t affect your finances much. But if you are particularly ambitious, and your volunteerism involves

Use “Tax Diversification” to Help Manage Retirement Income You need to save and invest as much as possible to pay for the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. But your retirement income also depends, to a certain degree, on how your retirement funds are taxed. And that’s why you may be interested in tax diversification.
To understand the concept of tax diversification, you’ll need Financial to be familiar with how two of Advice the most important retirementsavings vehicles — an IRA Karl and a 401(k) — are taxed. If you think your tax bracket will be lower in retirement than when you were working, a traditional IRA or 401(k) might be a better choice, due to the cumulative tax deductions you took at a higher tax rate. But if your tax bracket will be the same, or higher, during retirement, then the value of tax-free distributions from a Roth IRA or 401(k) may outweigh the benefits of the tax deductions you’d get from a traditional IRA or 401(k).
news: You don’t necessarily have to choose, at least not with your IRA. That’s because you may be able to contribute to both a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA, assuming you meet the Roth’s income guidelines. This allows you to benefit from both the tax deductions of the traditional IRA and the potential tax-free distributions of the Roth IRA. And once you retire, this “tax d i -
versification” can be especially valuable. Why? Because when you have money in different types of accounts, you gain flexibility in how you structure your withdrawals — and this flexibility can help you potentially increase the amount of your after-tax disposable income. If you have a variety So making the choice between of accounts, with different “traditional” and “Roth” could tax treatments, you could be tricky. But here’s the good decide to first make your
required withdrawals (from a traditional IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan), followed, in order, by withdrawals from your taxable investment accounts, your tax-deferred accounts and, finally, your tax-free accounts. Keep in mind, though, that you may need to vary your actual sequence of withdrawals from year to year, depending on your tax situation. For example, it might make sense to change the order of withdrawals, or take withdrawals from multiple accounts, to help reduce taxes and avoid moving into a different tax bracket. Clearly, tax diversification can be beneficial. So after consulting with your tax and financial advisors, consider ways of allocating your retirement plan contributions to provide the flexibility you need to maximize your income during your retirement years. our time, this is a challenge for every person I have ever worked with. It is true that we make time for those things that are important and strength training is extremely important to increase quality of life, endurance, and self-perception. Just fifteen to twenty minutes spent two or three times per week makes a difference that can be felt almost immediately. If you already make time for a cardio work-out several times a week, dedicate a few extra minutes at the end to strength exercises. If you feel like you can’t squeeze one more minute out of your day, replace one of your already scheduled workouts with a strength training session. The NEW New China Palace An Oak Ridge Tradition lives! Since 1973, locals and visitors far and wide have been drawn to eat at The New China Palace in Oak Ridge. Visitors from around the world, who travel to work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are known to request a second trip to The New China
Palace upon their return. And locals already know the value of this fantastic Chinese fare that had settled long ago on the shores of Melton Lake. But now The New China Palace has left the lake and took its décor and famous flavors with it to another central location in Oak Ridge. The old Village Inn location on Central
Avenue has been refurbished and practically rebuilt to make The New China Palace a special place once again.

Insurance (Continued from page 13) and, as mentioned, even if you have preexisting conditions or a history of health problems you are still insurable and may still qualify for immediate coverage. So it makes every bit of sense to apply. Okay, sounds good, you say. But how do I choose from all the policies out there, the ones I see advertised on TV or hear about on the radio, the solicitations I get in the mail, the ads I read in newspapers and magazines, the phone calls I receive from sales reps? sell just this kind of final expense, or as some call it, burial insurance. In one respect all of that competition keeps rates low. But you also have to be careful that the policy you choose is one that’s right for you. Many larger insurers offer one-size-fits-all policies that contain costly features you may not need but end up paying for. Other policies sold online, by mail or over the phone may have high premiums, rate increases every few years, two-year waiting periods, and expiration dates!
Another concern is the service you receive (or don’t receive) before and after you purchase your insurance. Many seniors have complained that the Yes, there are indeed a lot of salespeople they’ve dealt companies and agencies who with just don’t understand or

Or, when the insured has a question or needs to make a policy change, the agent doesn’t return your call and the company’s customer service reps are difficult to reach, unhelpful or located in some far-off place. Because of issues like these, many seniors have found that a local, trusted, independent agent is the best and most reliable source for securing the final expense insurance they desire. For several reasons: An independent agent is not beholden to any one insurance company. They represent you and will offer you the best policy at the best rate. Your agent should take

Work, Recover, Repeat: High Intensity Interval Training Explained As a personal trainer and business owner with over 18 years of experience in the health and fitness industry, I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go. High Intensity Interval Training (often referred to as H.I.I.T) is currently a very popular trend in fitness. Just turn on the television after 10 pm and you can’t help see infomercials for fitness DVD programs like “Insanity and P90x”, and athletic apparel companies showing young, fit people jumping onto boxes, slamming oversized ropes, and lifting heavy weights until they fall to the floor in exhaustion.
So what is H.I.I.T. anyway? Interval training is based on the idea that by working at a higher level intensity for a shorter duration (sprint for a minute instead walking or jogging for 5 minutes), we can have a greater impact on our cardiovascular system. Its proponents claim that this type of training allows you to burn fat while maintaining lean muscle, will improve both your aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen) energy systems, and will allow you to boost your post-workout metabolism more than traditional cardio exercise. Some research also suggests that
Special Guest Andrew Henderson H.I.I.,T. can help increase our production of HGH (Human Growth Hormone) as well. Where did it come from? A popular style of training known as Tabata training, involves doing an exercise at maximum intensity for a set period time (usually around 20 seconds), taking a short break (usually around 10 seconds), and then repeating this work-rest cycle up to
8 times. It is named after Dr. Tabata, a Japanese physiologist. His research in the 1990’s compared the benefits of this interval style workout to the traditional Steady State aerobic exercise (maintaining a constant, moder-
ate intensity level). Much of today’s H.I.I.T. stems from Dr.Tabata’s research. Does H.I.I.T. Work? Most of the research I’ve read does support H.I.I.T.’s claims of im(See ‘H.I.I.T.’ on page 51)

After the anesthetic takes effect, the Practitioner can begin the application of the Micropigmentation. The procedure usually takes about one to three hours, depending on what choice the patient has made. The Micropigmentation Practitioner uses a hollow, vibrating needle to introduce the pigment into the middle layer of skin (dermis). A droplet of the pigment is then released into the skin. The color used will look dark and shiny, while the surrounding areas can appear swollen and red. Patients can go home immediately following the treatment.
Are the Procedures Painful? Topical anesthetics are used prior and during the procedures and are of the highest medical grade strength possible in our facility. A post-care kit containing an ointment will be given to apply over the treated area. Following these instructions can ensure better results thus reducing any possibility of complications. Is a “Follow Up” or “Retouch“ Necessary? At your initial procedure the pigments will be implanted generously unless verbal instruction from you is otherwise indicated. Although “retouches” are sometimes necessary, the goal is to deposit enough pigment during your initial visit so that you do not have another healing process to encounter. During this healing process some of your color will be lost as it migrates into the skin. Any follow up procedure (retouches) are applied within 6–8 weeks after the initial application. These follow up applications will fine tune your permanent cosmetic procedure. All retouches must
be done with 60 days of initial procedure. After 60 days, retouches will be considered maintenance and charged accordingly. What is a “Maintenance” Procedure? Applications after the initial visit of 60 days are considered a “maintenance application” and are charged accordingly. Re-
touches are within the initial visit of 60 days. The post care are vital in the outcome of the applications. Why Would I have to have a Maintenance Procedure Anyway? Although Permanent Cosmetics are a lifetime commitment, they are not (See ‘Cosmetics’ on page 46)

Soul (Continued from page 9) others? Am I willing to forgive others when they hurt me? These, and many other questions like this, will indicate where I am deep inside and whether or not my soul is healthy. Second, what are the signs of spiritual sickness? Here are some questions that might help me be aware that I am spiritually sick and in trouble: Do I harbor resentment toward
someone? Has my anger been getting out of control? Am I caught up in gossip about someone, repeating things I would never say to their face? Am I in the midst of despair, allowing the things I cannot control to control my life’s responses? Have I shut myself off from others who care about me? Have I allowed some addiction to take control of my life? Do I have a dark, foreboding view of life thinking that others get all of the breaks? Do I constantly blame others for my problems? Am I unwilling to be accountable to
A rainbow can be seen only in the morning or late afternoon... someone in my life who could serve as a mentor for me? Am I unwilling to accept the faults in others, but expect everyone to be understanding about my own shortcomings? Do I think and act as if the world revolves around my concerns? Third, what are some spiritual exercises that can keep me healthy? I think we can get a good insight into answering this question from the following quote from Thomas Moore: “ ’Soul’ is not a thing, but a quality or dimension of experiencing life and ourselves. It has to do with depth, value, relatedness, heart and personal substance”[Care of the Soul: A Guide for Cultivating Depth and Sacredness in Everyday Life.(1992). New York, NY: Harper Collins Publishers; page 5). Using this as a workable model, here is what healthy maintenance of our souls might look like: Depth: prayer, Bible reading, meditation, examination of our conscience, journaling, etc. Awareness of our inner resources that will enable us to withstand the shipwrecks of life. Value: constant attention to what we prioritize and what we value. At the core of this

The Healing Benefits of Yoga If you have gone to the doctor lately for advice on how to relieve or manage a health concern, he’s probably suggested Yoga. The image most people have of Yoga in the West, being able to twist yourself into odd pretzel - like positions, is not what REAL Yoga entails. Yoga has been around for over 5000 years, and while it does include asana (poses) most of them are available to practitioners of variable fitness levels. But asana is not the only component of Yoga. Pranayama (breath work), and dhyana (meditation) are also incorporated. In fact, more studies have been done on the benefits of meditation than all other forms of Yoga combined. With all the health benefits of Yoga, there is no wonder why this ancient practice has taken off
in the West. In the numerous health studies of Yoga, the findings have been beyond what medical experts thought and these findings are spurring even more studies, to see what else the practice of Yoga can do. From relaxation to lowering your risk of heart disease, Yoga continues to prove helpful in the quality of life for people of all ages. Wondering what Yoga has to offer you? Here are some of the top health benefits you can take advantage of. 1. Increased Flexibility- “I can’t do Yoga I’m not flexible enough”. That’s the top reason Yoga teachers hear for why someone can’t practice. You don’t need to be flexible to start your practice, that’s what a Yoga practice

Cosmetic (Continued from page 41) always as permanent as one may expect. Many factors can vary as to why one would need a maintenance application. Health of the patient, cheaper made pigments, sun and experience of the person performing the procedure are the biggest reasons why maintenance applications are needed. Who Do I Decide to Use? Caution! With the increasing popularity of Permanent Cosmetics, it is important that the patient research and understand the different choices for Permanent Cosmetics. Although the State of Tennessee requires a year’s apprenticeship under a licensed professional this does not always mean that those who perform such procedures in a medical facility have had that year’s apprenticeship and experience. Ask! Just
ask! It is highly recommended that you consult a qualified practitioner with significant experience. Experience of the Practitioner, sterilization, products and the cleanliness should be the deciding factors. It is also recommended that the patient look at before and after photographs, check the certifications of the Practitioner and the actual location of the business. Caution to those who seek services from the special half price radio and newspapers ads. What are the Typical Costs? The fees for Permanent Cosmetics can widely range depending on the experience of the Practitioner and the region of the business. Remember, Permanent Cosmetics are permanent and should be considered when seeking the lowest prices for applications. Caution to those who seek services from the special half price radio and newspapers ads.

There was legal controversy about Article I Judges, and the United State Supreme Court finally ruled they are constitutional. In the case of the present bankruptcy judges, they are appointed for l4 year terms by the United States Court of Appeals for the Circuit they are in. Bankruptcy Judges serve under a general order of referral by the District Court they serve within. Heart (Continued from page 21) cholesterol is composed of many component molecules, but the high and low density lipoproteins called HDL and LDL are of specific interest. LDL clogs the arteries, while HDL has a prevention effect by latching upon LDL and carrying it back to the liver before it does any harm. That is why your healthcare provider wants your HDL value to be
high, and your LDL value to be low, so that your cholesterol risks are minimized. What can you do? If you are reading closely, it should be no surprise that diet lowers your LDL value and exercise raises your HDL value. Within limits, the more you do of each the better your results will be. Unfortunately, many of us have a genetic makeup leading to unfavorable HDL and/or LDL values. For those with high risks posed by family history, diabetes, and hypertension, drug therapy may be important to achieve levels set by healthcare guidelines. For those at highest risk, LDL level needs to be less than 100, and HDL levels greater than 40 (male) and 50 (female) are recommended. Recognize that we have proven, safe medications to achieve LDL lowering, but medicines to raise HDL are still under investigation – look for a breakthrough in a year or so. Your healthcare provider can provide council regarding your specific situation. Truly, the greatest wealth is health. Armed with knowing what is “Right” for heart health and an attitude of achievement, one can stay healthy through diet, exercise, and stress management, while the trials and toxicities of daily life can be countered or avoided by life-supporting choices. These day-by-day choices add up over a lifetime and tip the balance toward health if each day is lived skillfully. If possible, start in teenage or young adult years to control RISK FACTORS. If you miss an early start, start as soon as you can to remedy an unhealthy lifestyle and get the help you need. Get it “Right” and your heart will be healthy for life.

H.I.I.T. (Continued from page 39) proved aerobic and anaerobic fitness, metabolic rate boost, and body fat reduction. BUT…H.I.I.T. isn’t for everyone. We require our clients to be able to do at least 20-30
minutes of continuous steady start cardio training on the bike, treadmill, or elliptical before starting a higher intensity cardio program. Anybody with cardiovascular or pulmonary concerns such as hypertension asthma should consult their physician before starting H.I.I.T. Those with
orthopedic conditions (feet, ankles, knees, hips, and lower back) should use caution with high impact jumps, burpees, and sprints. A Word of Caution: Because of the quick pace which many H.I.I.T workouts demand, you must be able to do the exer-
cises with correct form first, have a strong core to maintain proper body alignment, and be careful not to overtrain. We recommend our clients use H.I.I.T. no more than 2 days a week, and combine it with traditional, steady state aerobic exercise, flexibility training, functional strength
training, and proper nutrition. Remember, you can’t out-exercise a bad diet! Train hard, eat clean, and be grateful!

Cancer and How It Affects the Mouth If you or someone you know has been given the news that you have cancer, you most certainly have a lot to think about. There are decisions to make and concerns that you will have...but most people forget the mouth. People who have ra- diation to the head and neck can have severe effects to the mouth, which includes your gums, teeth, and jaw. The goal for managing this therapy is to minimize the effects from the radiation therapy, to minimize/prevent cavities, and permit maximum oral health function during and following radiation therapy.
1. Dry Mouth- Dry mouth can be caused by radiation to salivary glads resulting in degenerative changes and diminished quantity of the remaining saliva. People with dry mouth are subject to extraordinary cavity levels for the rest of their lives. The most important point to people in this position is they should never use sugared sucking candies to stimulate saliva flow. This constant amount of sugar plus dry mouth will lead to an extraordinary amount of cavities. There are products and/or prescriptions that your dentist can give to you to help with this condition.

Death of cells or tissue (necrosis) of the hard and soft tissues- this can be prevented/minimized by performing any invasive procedures prior to radiation therapy. 4. Painful inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes (mucosistis)this usually occurs during the course of radiation therapy. Different prescription solutions can be prescribed to treat this condition. 5. Inability to open your mouth fully (trismus)- this is a very difficult problem to resolve and best prevented through exercise. This can be caused by radiation and subsequent fibrosis of some or all of the muscles of mastication. Your dentist can give daily exercises to help prevent this issue. 6. Complications with current dentures/partials- the lack of saliva, which forms a sort of lubricant and sealing medium, can be lost/diminished which can affect how your denture/partial will fit.
Your dentist can use soft liners which can help with abrasions you may see/feel in your soft tissue. People without teeth who need a denture need to wait 6-8 months after radiation before making new dentures.

Your teeth and your mouth are not just for looks, they are a means to a healthy quality of life so that you can eat whatever you would like for the rest of your life. Please take the time to visit your dentist when faced with this situation. If you know someone, please pass this information along to them... you can save them a lot of time and unnecessary side effects while keeping them smiling.
7. Decreased taste sensation (hypogeusia)- this is caused by radiation to structures of the back part of the tongue. Once an area is irradiated, it is changed forever. The ABCs of Goal Setting Whose dream are you working towards? If it’s not your own goals you’re working to achieve, then you’re working to achieve someone else’s goals. We always set goals the day before the New Year’s, you may write them down or just have them in your head. But how do we really achieve these goals? The most popular goal that everyone sets is: Begin working out, eat healthy and lose X amount of weight. But here is the problem, people get comfortable. So many people are afraid of hard work. It’s easier to just accept defeat then to look it in the eye and say no I’m not going to accept that and get back up and keep working at it. It’s simple to lose weight, work out more and eat less. Now this is where motivation comes into play, because like I said earlier, we want a comfortable life style. We want everything handed to us on a silver platter. So if you’re serious about your goals this will help you out! The A.B.C’s of Goal Setting is an easy format to follow in achieving your goals.
The letters I will be going over with you our T, A, B, C. The T stands for tools, do you have the tools you need to get the job done. For example if my goal is to get in shape, do you have running shoes, workout clothes, a gym to go to, or the proper equipment at home? How can I start working towards a goal if I do not have the proper equipment? It’s easy to say I want to start scuba diving but if I don’t begin to invest in it I will never begin to move towards that goal. So whatever you are wanting to work towards invest in getting the tools needed. A is for Aim, a great quote by Stephen Covey is “Be sure that, as you scramble up the ladder of success, it is leaning against the right building.” A lot of people set blind goals or goals that are not clear. I want to lose weight! Ok how much weight do you want to lose? How do you plan on losing that weight? How long are you wanting to take to lose that weight? Why do you want to lose the weight? Do you

great testimony but he went in without a number in mind. Because he knew he wanted to lose weight, but he wanted to change his life style and get a black belt was his true goal. So when you find a sport or hobby stick to it and work hard and aim for something more than just the X amount of pounds. B is for Back Up. One of the hardest things to do in life is do it by yourself. When you
are born we have some type of parents in our life directing us on what to do. When we start to play sports we have our coaches, when we go to school we had our teachers. We always had someone there to back us up and teach us. One thing is let people know what you are doing and to back you up. Motivation is a huge secret to succeeding in the goals you set. Without distress or eustress, life would be a pretty boring ride! However, in eustress when the positive event is over, stress hormones return to normal. Stress that kills can be from multiple events in our lives. Unlike eustress listed in the exciting things above, stress can be multiple negative events happening individually or negative events compounded on top of each other creating unhealthy physical, mental and emotional responses. Bank (Continued from page 47) ter. The Bankruptcy Code provides six kinds of bankruptcy. Individuals usually file Chapter 7 or Chapter l3 bankruptcies. An experienced bankruptcy lawyer can quickly advice you if one or the other is right for you. Chapter 11 is a third type that involve business reorganization and are time-consuming and complicated in comparison. It is more unusual for a person to file a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, since they involve businesses
or organizations. There are three other even rarer types of bankruptcies, such as Chapter 9, for municipalities, like what Detroit, Michigan, filed last year. Also, a chapter l2, which is for farmers and fishermen. And lastly, Chapter l5, for international or foreign debtors to handle their debts. About two-thirds of consumer debtors file file Chapter 7 bankrutpcy, where non-exempt property is surrendered to a bankruptcy trustee who then liquidates the property and distributes the proceeds to the debtor’s unsecured creditors. In reality, most
debtors who file do not own any non-exempt property, so end up keeping most if not all their property that is not secured by a debt anyway. Debtors discharge most if not all debt, but may keep real estate or automobiles, or other property they own, by agreeing to pay the creditors who have secured debts in it, or redeeming it for the actual value, often far less than what is owed. A debtor can make some serious errors that prevent them from receiving a bankruptcy discharge such as being guilty of certain types of inappropriate behavior (e.g. concealing records relating to financial condi-
Visions Magazine, January / February 2014, Page 57 tion) and also there are a few debts (e.g. spousal and child support) that survive bankruptcy. Most student loans are not discharged. Some taxes are not discharged. Chapter 7 relief is available once every eight years. A few debts can be discharged in Chapter l3 cases but not in Chapter 7 cases. Even transfers by debtors of certain property makes bankruptcy difficult. That’s why anyone with financial problems needs to see an attorney as soon as possible to make sure what they should do and what is prohibited. If you see an attorney about bankruptcy, the attorney will probably need a record of your income for the past six months to see if you meet what is called the “means test,” which was passed by a 2005 amendments to the Bankruptcy Code –a test to see if a debtor can file a Chapter 7 case versus a Chapter l3
case. There again, an experienced attorney can analyze it pretty quickly during the first free initial appointment. As you can see, bankruptcy is not an easy subject for most people with financial difficulties—but a lawyer experienced in handling bankruptcy cases can probably help you sort it out and make sense of a complex subject. So if you are faced with what seems insurmountable financial difficulties, call a lawyer who has experience in bankruptcy law for a free first appointment to get a handle on your options.
