welcome

bathgate music festival

Councillor Jim Walker, Executive Councillor for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Bathgate Town Centre Management Group

Welcome to the 2009 Bathgate Music Festival. Last year, when the first ever Bathgate Music Festival took over the town it was by no means certain that there would be a second one. I am delighted that you, the people of Bathgate, took the Festival into your heart and turned out in your thousands to

Festival Partners

enjoy all sorts of music in all sorts of venues all over town. West Lothian has always been interested in making international connections

and this year the Festival has attracted musicians from across the world. We are joined by musicians from Germany, Israel, USA and North America, the globally inspired Orkestra del Sol, music from Cuba, Spain as well as world class Scottish musicians and mixing it with some of West Lothian’s talented musicians, bands and community arts groups. I urge everyone to find some time during the week to take part in the Bathgate Music Festival.

the future of the town and an amazing 92% said they wanted the Bathgate

Music Festival to become an annual event. We are delighted to be involved in the partnership delivering the second annual Bathgate Music Festival.

Tam White and Brian Kellock

Brenda Cochrane

Blues legend Tam White and award winning piano player Brian Kellock combine to present a captivating programme of originals and jazz and blues standards, which flow as smoothly as mature single malt and just as full of character. Tam White has a knack of giving a wistful, sometimes whimsical twist even to simple lyrics and the empathy between him and Brian Kellock is tangible. Relax and enjoy. “Superb melodies, vacuum-tight arrangements, awesome musicianship.” The Scotsman. “Undoubtedly one of the best blues singers in Europe.” Mettman Blues Festival

Brenda Cochrane has become internationally known as ‘the voice’ after gracing stages all over the world. She is still remembered by many as the young woman who won Opportunity Knocks back in 1988 with the largest ever recorded vote. More recently she made a lasting impression as Mama Morton in the West End musical Chicago. Her versatile singing encompasses every type of music from country to pop to musical theatre. Add to that her sense of humour and stage presence and you have a world class perfomer.

Sunday 13 September, 2pm, Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £7

“What a voice! Imagine Vonda Shephard, Aretha Franklin and Eva Cassidy rolled into one and that’s Brenda Cochrane.” EdinburghGuide.com

Big Band Bash

Monday 14 September, 7.30pm Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £11 or £8 concession

Andy Mears Jazz Orchestra with West Lothian Schools Big Band

Opening the Festival with a bang with the talented and energetic West Lothian Schools Big Band which goes from strength to strength with conductor Stuart French. They are joined by the Andy Mears Jazz Orchestra which features established Scottish talent and promising young musicians all bustling with desire and energy. This exciting blend of youthful zeal and experience has quickly seen the orchestra establish itself as one of the most exciting musical projects happening in Scotland today. Led by Andy Mears, professional saxophonist, composer, arranger and teacher. Sunday 13 September, 7.30pm, Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £11 or £8 concession

Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas supported by West Lothian Schools Folk Group

www.alasdairfraser.com

Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser appears with the sizzlingly-talented California cellist Natalie Haas as they continue to pursue their resurrection and reinvention of the classic musical marriage between big and small fiddles. The duo’s near-telepathic interplay is dazzling both for its breathtaking technical prowess and its boundless dynamism. “Fraser, one of the most respected of all exponents of the Scots fiddle, would look long and hard to find a more appropriate cellist as a partner. Haas can switch just as effortlessly as Fraser from a gentle singing tone to driving, dancing melody. A positive joy.” The Scotsman Tuesday 15 September 7.30pm Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £11 or £8 concession

Orkestra del Sol

Joni Keen & her Trio

Flamboyant, brassy and irresistibly euphoric. It is their imaginative and captivating stage show that truly sets Orkestra del Sol apart – bursting with anarchic humour, wildly skilful musical arrangements and a roguish sense of theatre, the band has hit upon an explosive combination. Blending the best of brass with the swinging sounds of New Orleans, the rolling rhythms of the Middle East or the bouncing beats of UK ska, Orkestra del Sol pack a punch and make mincemeat of musical categories. This is an inspired musical feast, a journey into the irresistible world of Orkestra del Sol. Globally inspired. Distilled in Scotland.

Join Joni Keene and some of Scotland’s finest jazz musicians in a celebration of Ella Fitzgerald, one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century. “Joni Keen is undoubtedly one of Scotland’s finest stars on the UK jazz scene, thrilling critics with her beautiful voice that resonates with jazz heroines of yesteryear but which is still most distinctly her own” David Sillars, Be- bop to Hip-hop, BBC Radio Scotland.

Celebrate the music of Ella Fitzgerald

The Hot Seats

“Orkestra del Sol showed just how brilliantly they’ve caught the Zeitgeist... their on-stage music-making and theatricality is irresistible” The Scotsman “You cannot take your eyes off these characters for a second, for fear of missing another hilarious interaction or quirky gesture.” Three Weeks Wednesday 16 September, 7.30pm, Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £12 or £9 concession

International Guitar Night with Brian Gore, Itamar Erez and Lulo Reinhardt

The International Guitar Night brings together some of the world’s foremost acoustic guitarists to perform their latest original compositions and exchange musical ideas in a concert setting. Founder Brian Gore will be joined by eclectic gypsy-jazz guitarist Lulo Reinhardt from Germany and Israel’s Itamar Erez. Each player is a vastly experienced and well travelled international musician. All will impress if not stun with their vituosity, technique and musicianship. “With the International Guitar Night, Brian Gore has created a new niche for the myriad of styles that can be played by the unaccompanied acoustic guitar, as well as a marvellous opportunity for virtuosos to interact and learn from one another onstage.” Michael Parrish, Dirty Linen (100th Anniversary Edition) Thursday 17 September, 7.30pm Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £11 or £8 concession

Based in Richmond, Virginia, The Hot Seats (formerly Special Ed and the Shortbus) combine the virtuoso soloing and tightness of bluegrass, the band-driven rhythm of old time, the jerky bounce of ragtime and the swagger of good old rock ‘n’ roll. The five piece band employs banjos, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, a trap set, a doghouse bass, many kazoos, and a whole host of other toys to create their irresistible sound! The Hot Seats caused a sensation at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2008 carrying off a Herald Angel for their outstanding contribution and went on to be a stand-out act at Celtic Connections. “Sensational” The Herald. “Bonkers but brilliant” Maverick

Led Astray

with support Look Left Again

Led Astray are one of the UK’s finest tributes to the mighty Led Zeppelin. Their shows incorporate the most popular songs from Zeppelin’s first seven albums, delivered with the skill, feel and passion that the original band were famous for. Led Astray focus on recreating the live versions of most of the songs, improvising where appropriate, so that every show is a little different. Unlike most other tribute bands who claim to be “the most authentic in the world” Led Astray prefer to let their performances do the talking! Featuring the searing vocals of Ian Burns, the guitar wizardry of Neil Humphrey, solid bass, keyboards and mandolin of multi talented Alistair McBride and the thunderous drums of Fraser Murray, Led Astray are an act not to be missed. Saturday 19 September, doors at 7pm, Regal Community Theatre Tickets: £10 or £7 concession, standing only
