THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
FROM THE PUBLISHER POST COVID: The “New Normal” and Motorcycle Events So, It’s a strange new world out there. As I write this, people are just now allowed to return to bars and restaurants – and even eat inside! However, they must sit and can’t stand. They cannot have a drink in their hand or gather in any sort of group while standing on two feet. I am not a medical professional and I’m not speaking as to the safety or risk associated with such things – I’m just thinking that it all sounds CRAZY. Even if it does make things safer for everyone – and I cannot speak to that, I’m just amazed that these are the new realities as I write this. The challenge, though, is looking forward and planning rides, bike shows, bike nights, and other motorcycle events for the summer. The rules are changing daily, and from one week to the next – nobody knows what is going to be allowed or not. Memorial Weekend arrived and for the first time in more than 15 years, I wasn’t in Sandusky for Ohio Bike Week. At this point, it’s status is pending – no official word on it being cancelled for the year or possibly rescheduled for the Fall. Of course, we are hoping to hear a September date announced – and maybe it becomes a new separate event for years to come, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking. The reality is that nobody really knows what the future holds because it seems as though there are so many variables. It is not just a question of science, numbers, or even the virus itself – because it’s all subject to interpretation and everyone seems to have a different take on what the best path is going forward. So, it is really a question of who has the Governor’s ear and how much he’s considering the public outcry. For us, though, we need to adapt to the “New Normal”. As we move forward, we are working with our partners to create a new more flexible plan for even our most established events – as we need to accept the reality that everything might change tomorrow. I’d like to think that we are taking an optimistic but realistic approach – “hoping for the best but planning for the worst-case scenario”. In the past few weeks, I’ve witnessed firsthand the excitement and pent up energy that Ohio riders have at this point. I’ve had a chance to ride with a few groups as they’ve gone out – with great numbers as folks just want to RIDE and hang with others. Down in Circleville, we watched as THOUSANDS from all across the country came to ride with a Vietnam Vet for what might be his last ride. So, I believe that there’s a lot of reason for optimism when it comes to this upcoming riding season. I believe that it may be a lot of smaller, regional events – more rides and less rallies, more smaller bike nights than giant mid-week gettogethers with hundreds and hundreds of bikes. And that’s ok – maybe that’s what we all needed. Now, don’t get me wrong – I LOVE the rallies and Ohio Bike Week, especially, is the KICKOFF to summer for me. But the reality is that we may not have the giant events this year. It is going to be a lot more brothers and sisters getting together and riding than anything else. It’s going to be more grass roots poker runs and memorial rides – and that’s ok. For us, this means more digital and interactive online resources – digital blogs and videos. It means more grassroots coverage by local riders all across Ohio. It means devoting more resources and attention to smaller, more cost-effective promotions for everyone. And that’s all ok. We will always strive to be the best possible printed resource for the local riding community here in Ohio. But now, that vision is adapting to include even more digital programming with our online partners. It’s a whole new world, and we have to adapt to the “New Normal” – but our focus will always be on serving the local riding community in whatever way we can. Hope to see you out on the road soon – mask or no mask! Derek

THE IRON COWBOY
STURGIS IS ON! Join the TRO CREW at the WORLD’S BIGGEST RALLY!
The Iron Horse Campground is the OFFICIAL CAMPGROUND of TRO!
Despite craziness all over the Midwest, South Dakota’s Governor Noem issued a “Return to Normal” order and the 80th Anniversary Sturgis Black Hills Rally is still on as I write this now! And if you’ve never been before, this might just be your best chance to reallocate some of that vacation time and experience what should be at the top of every biker’s bucket list – attend Sturgis! The Mecca of the Motorcycle World is worth the pilgrimage across the miles upon miles of corn to experience what words can never adequately describe to those that have never been. And this year, with so much up in the air – you might just find great opportunities at some of the Rally’s most popular destinations. This include one of the best lineups ever for the LEGENDARY Sturgis BUFFALO CHIP – featuring LYNYRD SKYNYRD, ZZ TOP, SHINEDOWN, BILLY IDOL, WILLIE NELSON, and countless other performers. The Iron Horse Campground has been the Official Campground for Thunder Roads Ohio and our crew for years. Rick and his folks offer home away from home under beauty of Bear Butte – right smack dab in the middle of everything. You’re right between the Buffalo Chip, Full Throttle Saloon, Glencoe, and the City of Sturgis. You couldn’t ask for a better spot! You can check them out online at www.IronHorseCampground.com or call them directly at 877-700-4766. Let them know that Thunder Roads Ohio sent ya – but just don’t ask for our spot! We’re still using it!
RIDE TO BE HEARD: Honoring our Vietnam Vets
Ride and programs rescheduled for Saturday, August 15 In February of this year, Kent State University announced that Jane Fonda would be speaking as part of their 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the May 4, 1970 protest that ended with the death of four KSU students. Jane Fonda is one of the most high profile war protestors of the era – even going so far as traveling to North Vietnam and taking part in numerous propaganda stunts with the North Vietnamese military while we were at war with them. In the eyes of many, Kent State’s choice seemed to celebrate the protestors and ignored both the thousands of VETERANS that served and the thousands that lost their lives there. In response, Thunder Roads Ohio joined with both Veterans, their families, and concerned citizens to plan the RIDE TO BE HEARD: Honoring our Vietnam Veterans. Supported by ReasonsToRide.com, the Ride was to be held on Sunday, May 3rd – but of course, COVID-19 came along and everything had to be rescheduled. With the ever changing guidelines and mandates from the State and the needs of those hosting, participating, and being honored by this event – American Legion Portage Post 496 and the American Legion Riders have requested to reschedule the RIDE TO BE HEARD and program to Saturday, August 15th. We believe that this is best for everyone. We appreciate everyone’s patience and hope that by allowing some additional time, more people can participate and we can truly do the program we originally intended to – honoring our Vietnam Veterans, recognizing those that SERVED and SACRIFICED for our nation. It seemed clear that if we pushed forward with an earlier date, there would be far too much uncertainty for us to do it all. Kim Kilbourne, with the American Legion Portage Post 496 is coordinating a variety of on-site programs for those participating in the ride or simply wishing to come out and help honor our Veterans. If you are involved with any type of Veterans Service Organization operating in Northeast Ohio, she’d love to hear from you. You can reach her at Kash0965@gmail.com or call 330-6739743. PLEASE follow this post and share it to any groups that you participate in. We are also looking for VOLUNTEERS to help assist with the event on the day of and help plan / promote it in advance. Please email us at Events@ReasonsToRide.com and let us know if you can help! Thank you!

Opportunities for local riders to help support their riding community. As we head into the 2020 riding season, it’s clear that there will be a much greater demand for local coverage across the state as more riders will be staying closer to home for smaller rides and events. This means that TRO will need even more help covering these events – both getting the word out in advance and taking pictures and covering the events as they happen. As always, Local Road Reps will have the opportunity to make some extra cash covering their area – if they’d like. But for many, the real appeal is being able to help these local events succeed and share their story with the rest of the state! The cool part, though, is that you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other. You can both help the local riding community and make some $$$ doing what you love! How cool is that?! No magazine experience is needed, however you’ll need access to a computer that you feel comfortable using and possibly a camera. Although, some simply use their phone! The key, though, being able to handle yourself professionally while still having fun hanging with bikers! It’s a tough job, but somebody gets to do it! THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE
READER’S RIDES TRO is teaming up with ReasonsToRide.com to offer NEW Reader’s Rides features both within the magazine and online. Readers are encouraged to submit pics and information on their bikes to ReadersRides@ReasonsToRide. com. Submissions will be reviewed for possible inclusion in upcoming print or online features, or possibly for a dedicated feature or sponsored photo shoot where practical. Readers having their bikes chosen for a cover or dedicated feature will receive special RTR and Bike Show Series swag – along with copies of the printed magazines. There will also be opportunities to get printed copies or even posters made of the features. For more information, visit ReasonsToRide.com/ReadersRides

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Woohoo!!
Here it comes…as a voice of one crying in the wilderness, John the Baptist was called on to go throughout the land and shout ‘Repent!’ in preparation for the soon coming of Jesus. He did just what he was told to do. He was a wild looking dude! Hair way past his shoulders, a beard that would make the ZZ Top boys look shaved and he ate only wild locust and honey. Good protein and purifiers! Yep, he was a great forerunner for when Jesus was to come on the scene. John even baptized many hundreds of people that decided he was sharing the truth and decided to follow to see just what would happen next!
Today is the day. This minute your moment and this is my opportunity to share with you the love that has been so freely given to us through Jesus. It’s time to take a new road, discover the real freedom your heart has been longing to know. It’s a simple prayer…”Jesus, I have tried on my own and am not getting anywhere. Please come into my life and show me the way, I repent from the old ways and look forward to the new way in You. Amen.”
And then came Jesus. Well, John didn’t realize that it would be his own cousin, at least it appears that way, because when John was in prison about to be beheaded by the king of the land at that time, he sent some of his followers to ask Jesus if he was the One that he foretold everyone about. Jesus sent word back to John and said, “Tell him I am.” John even got to baptize Jesus before they took him off to prison. Of course, John felt unworthy to do such a thing to the One he believed was greater than he, but Jesus said, “you must in order for all things to be fulfilled,” so it was done. John saw the Spirit descend on Jesus and he heard the voice of God saying, “this is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Well, that was all before John went to prison for preaching the good news.
Blessings!
John went to prison because he told King Herod that it was wrong for him to be married to his brother’s wife. While in prison, the King visited John. As John witnessed to the king and told him all about the Christ the King came to really like John. Well, that did not sit too well on the Queen’s ear. So, when she had the opportunity, she had John’s head chopped off and delivered on a platter! It hurt the King, but he had made a vow so he had to follow through. It’s all in the book of Matthew… great read.
Now go out and share that you have prayed that prayer, contact us at graceme.mg@gmail.com and we will help you through! Mary G.
COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a non-denominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Visit us at www.cmausa.org for more information. Have a message you’d like to share? If you have a message that you’d like to share with riders across Ohio and the Midwest, let us know. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com
Why am I telling you all of this? Because it is so much like today. Many of us are called by God to do a specific work in the Kingdom. Everyone of us has this calling and at a set time, when we are following the plan of God in our lives, we go out and preach the word that is given to us. We might say, ‘Repent’, we might read the mail of the person we have been sent to, we present the truth and do it not because we are better or know more, because we aren’t and don’t, we just are following a Savior who has set us free from the bondages we were once so deeply set in. We do it because our Heavenly Father loves you so much that He sent His Son Jesus to die for you. We take the risk that we ourselves could get our heads chopped off because you are worth it. 8 8

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes.
JUNE UPDATE!
ATTENTION MOTORCYCLE SHOPS / CUSTOM BUILDERS / PAINTERS: For shops interested in participating and possibly exhibiting customer and shop bikes, a limited number of shop displays are available at Thunder Roads Bike Shows. Participating shops and organizations are able to offer special incentives for their customers and members. UPCOMING SHOWS! Due to the Shutdown Order currently in place as we go to press, we ask that everyone visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio for information on upcoming Bike Shows.
Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt! Then come on out to the show! Specifics vary by show, but it’s generally an informal process. You’ll meet other builders and exhibitors – and most likely walk away with more than a few new friends in the motorcycle community. NEW for 2020 – NEW Vintage Classes! For 2020, we will be adding VINTAGE RACING and VINTAGE TOURING classes as options for exhibitors taking part in the BIKE SHOW SERIES. As always, we will require at least 3 bikes in these classes to qualify for a BEST IN CLASS AWARD – but several of the 2019 shows already far exceeded this for these classes, with some amazing bikes. Our hope is that we can encourage more Exhibitors to bring out and show their bikes in these classes with us offering new, distinct classes.

The Spirit of the ride…
Hello friends of TRO! I hope this finds you doing well. Needless to say, we have all had our share of challenges the past couple of months, yet, on the other hand, we have a lot to be thankful for. Reflections of May… The spirit of the ride had shown bright on the first Saturday of May. Hundreds of women from all over the country gathered to honor International Female ride day. Although it officially was postponed later in the year, it did not keep women from making the best of that day. I was fortunate to be a part of a group of 10 that met in Mansfield. Together, we trailed through SR 226 to SR 514 to our first stop at Honey Run Falls. By the looks of the number of people out that day, the thought of a pandemic didn’t even cross our minds. The tepid temps made for the ideal ride. We continued to SR 715 to Walhonding which boasted a very good scenic route. Along that route stands the historic Iron Bridge. Even though it is not assessable via vehicle, a group of dirt bike riders were eager to explore the rustic surroundings. As you continue on 715, you will cross over Mohawk Dam. Continue on and follow signs to the Gospel Hill Lighthouse. It is situated on a high elevation which makes for not only a good break stop, but for photo ops. Continue on 715 until you come to US 36 which takes you into Warsaw. On the main street is a nice ice cream shop with plenty of good parking. Once in Warsaw, you are not far from Roscoe Village for a food stop at the Warehouse Steak n’ Stein. They have an outdoor patio with a full service menu. Venture a few miles east of SR 36 to visit Wooley Pig Farm Brewery. Located on 90 acres in Appalachian, Ohio, they specialize in traditional German lagers with up to 8 – 12 beers on tap in the tasting room. Riding into June… I visited a few local biker establishments today. As I stepped into each business, I could smell the fresh scent of pine sol and disinfectants along with tape measures in hand to restructure the 6’ distance seating arrangements. As Ohio continues to make allowances for eating establishments, here are a few local biker pubs who are working hard to make your visit enjoyable. Let’s show up and patronize our favorite local eateries, caged or un-caged! I see them working hard to make you feel safe and welcome! All establishments listed below have indoor seating outlined with state guidelines. Gearheadz Pub and Drive Thru 9977 Lafayette Road, West Salem. Gearheadz has recently added a new full service outdoor patio offering pizza, burgers and fries. The outdoor patio has stamped concrete flooring, fire pit and plenty of parking. progress in front of the building for outdoor eating. Specializing in fresh, prime and Ohio sourced burgers, wings, stuffed shells, meatloaf and more. The Jailhouse Taverne ~ 15478 Avon Belden Road. Grafton. This biker friendly establishment is rearing to go with great outdoor seating, great service and food. Hopefully, we have a good 4-5 months of doing what we enjoy outdoors! Support local businesses when possible and have a great month! Don’t count the wheels, just enjoy the ride. Spyder Lilly Luvee La Vonne De Bois

Clutches People get really emotional and excited about these things, which is surprising because I have learned that not many people fully understand how they work. Did you ever notice that everyone thinks they are the master at using the clutch, and everyone else who does it differently is wrong? I once had another rider yell to me at a light “you're going to smoke your clutch riding like that!' I yelled back, “It's ok. I can fix that.” At 52k I decided it was time to replace my clutch. I figured the clutch had to be getting worn out by now. So I picked up a kevlar clutch somewhere online, because Kevlar clutches were supposed to have a long life and stand up to higher torque applications. Since I added a 95” High compression kit and head work over the winter, I figured it couldn't hurt. This job does not require any special tools if you are patient and meticulous. I disassembled the primary when I did the primary gasket, featured in last month’s article. First I backed off the adjustment on the clutch cable, just to make sure it doesn't somehow bind things up during the process. Next there are six bolts that hold the pressure plate on and keep tension on the clutch. These six bolts are under load, so this is where attention to detail is extra important. First, break each bolt free, by ¼ turn. From there, back each bolt off ¼ turn at a time, in a criss cross pattern. This will eventually relieve the spring pressure without risking breaking or stripping the bolts. Take your time at this!
surprised. See what good lubricants do. (synthetic 75w-140 with friction modifier). But I had already purchased the new clutch and I do a lot of traveling, so I replaced it anyways. Before I started the project, I took the new friction plates out of the package, and soaked them in 75w-140 gear oil for 24 hours. This way the oil fully permeates the friction material of the new plates. If you do not do this the plates will not be properly lubricated and they will wear out prematurely. This is the same process for the clutches in an automatic transmission. On the center of the plate that the pressure spring pushes on, there is a disk with an Allen screw and nut on it. This is for adjusting the backlash in your clutch linkage. Release this jam nut and back off the screw a little. This new clutch was a 9 plate disk system, so it required removal of a backing plate and spring a washer from the clutch pack. I also purchased a heavier pressure plate because more spring pressure is always better. *HD Screaming Eagle Pressure plate part number 37807-03. This will give me more clutch pressure without having to buy the high rent clutch assembly. I then installed the backing plate with NEW bolts. Bolt size m6 x 1 metric class 8.8 or higher. Harley part number: 2980 I then reassembled the clutch. Steel disk, friction disk, steel, friction.... I tightened them down in the same criss cross pattern, ¼ turn a time. I then torqued down the new pressure plate to nice and even, and then re-torqued again to be sure. I then set the backlash nut to a light finger tight, the backed it off 1/8 of a turn. Then I held it in place with an Allen wrench, and I locked the assembly down with the jam nut. From there I reassembled the primary and set the clutch cable tension. Check my first article on Thunder Roads Ohio for that info.
Once you do that, you will be able to remove the entire pressure plate assembly. I then took the friction and steel clutch plates out by sliding them out of the shell with some small screwdrivers. I tried to keep them in order, just in case I found any abnormal damage. I found that the steel plates were blue from heat, so I measured the frictions expecting them to be worn and I would be proud about getting my money’s worth out of those parts. They only had .005” wear on them! They were still good! I was genuinely 20 20

A Motorcycling Odyssey
May 20, 2020- Back on the bike, but only local day rides. Hoping to be doing more by the time you read this. This month we go back in time to when I began riding, look at the bikes I had and how they led to Sport Touring. Beginnings When I was 13, Ohio had a "scooter law" where you could get a license when you were 14 to ride a motorcycle or scooter under five horsepower. Most of my friends were older and used paper route money to buy bikes. I couldn't wait for my 14th birthday, but Ohio ended the scooter law. It expired nine days before my birthday. My parents breathed a big sigh of relief! When I turned sixteen, my parents made sure I had a decent car to drive and motorcycles were not allowed as long as I lived at home. Fast forward to 1965. I was twenty years old and one of my college friends got a beat up Zundapp 450cc Citation and took me for a ride. This gave me immediate bike fever and I bought a used Honda CB160 for $400. I was still living with parents and they were still against motorcycles so I didn't tell them about it and kept it in a friend's garage across town. After two weeks and about 500 miles I wanted something bigger so I went to the Honda shop and traded it for a new 305cc Honda Super hawk. I wasn't 21 yet so I had a friend cosign the title for me.
The next spring, I sold the Honda and bought a 750CC Norton Atlas. Looked cool, sounded great. Lots of power and great handling. The first thing I discovered was that it needed a windshield. My first two bikes didn't have enough power to overcome headwinds- if the wind was against you it just slowed you down. The Norton didn't care which way the wind was blowing and would pull hard enough to blow you off the seat. My arms were shot after an hour on a windy day. I was riding back and forth to college so I put a homemade trunk on it to carry books and leave the helmet in. The Norton had some unpleasant lessons to teach as well. Engine vibration was horrible, causing things to break and vibrate loose. It

was always breaking down and required constant work. Time for a change. The Pure Touring Era I had several friends in Dayton Motorcycle Club who rode BMWs, and I bought a used 1962 BMW R69 from one of them.. It had shaft drive and a very smooth motor, very reliable. Mine had a windshield on it and was comfortable to ride hundreds of miles at a time. I really wanted to start touring the country. In 1969 I got married and my wife and I took our honeymoon on the BMW, but it turned out to be underpowered and not too stable with both of us and our gear. For 1970 we bought a new Moto Guzzi 750 Ambassador. It had a solid frame and suspension, shaft drive, plenty of power. The Wixom handlebar fairing added wind and weather protection. In 1973 I traded up to a Guzzi 850 Eldorado, which had more power, five speed transmission and Windjammer fairing.
The Super hawk had about a thousand miles on it when a friend's mother ratted me out to my parents. A big fight ensued, but the folks saw that if they threw me out they would have zero control over me and I might drop out of college so they compromised and I brought the bike home.

“Should I buy heat-
While enjoying long distance touring, I grew to love the hill and curves the most, thinking about what bike the future might hold. Then, on one of our trips we met a couple that was touring on a new Moto Guzzi 750 Sport, which put the Guzzi drive train in a much lighter and stronger sport bike frame. This bike really handled great and I was very impressed. In 1975 Guzzi dropped the Eldorado and replaced it with the 850T, built on the Sport chassis but with taller bars, bigger gas tank and seat, etc. I adapted one into a touring bike, adding frame mount fairing, saddlebags etc, which worked fairly well. The successor 850-T3 and 1000cc G5 models offered better brakes and more power, making them even more fun in the twisties over the next few years. Another transition was under way.

Sport Touring Suddenly Arrives done about 115,000 miles on my two Yamaha FJR models. The 2016 ES is my all time favorite.
In early 1985, I was riding my well-worn G5 to work when the transmission broke and locked up. There was no longer a Guzzi dealer in Dayton, so it wasn't getting fixed any time soon. I bought a used Honda V4 750 Sabre. It had a small Vetter Windstar fairing on it. It was my first Japanese liquid cooled bike. I wasn't too impressed with the handling and suspension, but the V4 shaft drive motor was fantastic! It wasn't quite big enough for my wife and I but it was a lot of fun. In the fall of 1986, a mechanic friend of mine offered to trade his 86 Kawasaki Concours for my Sabre, The Concours was a classic sport touring bike- over 100 horsepower, factory full fairing, detachable saddlebags, roomy seat, air adjustable suspension. The handlebars were too short, but a 3" set of risers took care of that. My transition to sport touring was complete.
Every once in a while, someone asks, "Don't you wish you had kept all your bikes?" I have to say no- my memory is still too good. I can still remember their flaws as well as the good points. That said, I dearly loved every one of them- they carried me on the adventures and life experiences I will carry with me forever.

I kept the Kawasaki until 2001, longer than any of my bikes, followed by a Honda ST1100. The ST1100 was very smooth, very refined. All I had to change was the bars and seat. I crashed it in 2006, and replaced with a used Honda ST1300.

The ST1300 came with a Russell Day-Long saddle, which is one of those things you will then have to have on any future bike you own. The bike itself was a bit on the heavy side and there was a lot of engine heat on hot days, but the smoothness and quietness of the V4 was sublime. I kept it for seven seasons and just over 100,000 trouble-free miles. Since then I've THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

Ray of Sunshine What a world we live in. To tell you the truth even 3 months into it, I still do not know what to believe. The problem with all the news is that for one, the Federal Government has been lying to “We the People” since its inception. On the other hand, there is so much misinformation around in these 24 Hour a day news cycles no one can find the truth in any of it. I suppose caution is the smarter move with regard to all of it. We cannot be so afraid of dying that we forget to live. It has been a quiet Spring for most MC’s. So many events cancelled, so many State mandated Shutdowns and Social Distancing requirements. I stayed home for about 6 weeks solid with exception to a few grocery store runs. In Florida some of the closures have starting crawling back open. Some of the cancelled bike events have been rescheduled for later in the year, but even those are contingent on the outcome of future C-19 cases. I did not even visit my own Clubhouses for more than a month. The other large clubs cancelled their parties as well. Sometimes it takes a catastrophe for everyone to get on the same page.
Common folk do not even have the money to buy food, and the Unemployment systems have failed in so many states. It is absurd. We all have seen the pictures of the soup and bread lines of the Great Depression. If you go by a food pantry currently, you will see the same thing today. Have we learned nothing in a hundred years? As much as that tiny stimulus may have helped for a minute, it was like putting a band-aide on a bullet hole. I am not a supporter of Socialism, but I do support Social Services when it is prudent. We have been handing over Billions of Dollars in Aide for decades to countries that hate us, yet we still fail our own citizens. I had higher expectations than what we are seeing.
Then add to that the economic impact. I do not think we have even begun to see that impact in its full measure yet. Social Services have failed tremendously.
Keep it Real!
It is times like this that I am glad to be a member of an extended family. If I have $1.00, my club brother has 50 cents. If I have a sandwich, we both will not go hungry. The weather has been perfect here in the south, and I know the warmth is finally breaking through in the north as well. At least we have our Iron Ponies, and the wind in our face, makes these days a little more bearable. I hope that you are well. This will pass and most will live to ride another day. Get on your bikes and enjoy a Ray of Sunshine! My Road Name is Tabasco! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...
The owner of a drug store walks in to find a guy leaning heavily against a wall... The owner asks the clerk, "What's with that guy over there by the wall?" The clerk says, "Well, he came in here this morning to get something for his cough. I couldn't find the cough syrup, so I gave him an entire bottle of laxative." "You idiot! You can't treat a cough with laxatives!" "Oh yeah? Look at him, he's afraid to cough!" What do you call a laughing motorcycle? A Yamahahaha. What's the most dangerous part of a motorcycle? The nut that connects the seat to the handlebar.
Custody Case: A man and his young wife were in divorce court, but the custody of their children posed a problem. The mother gets up and says to the judge that since she brought the children into this world, she should retain custody of them. The man also wanted custody of his children, so the judge asked for his justification. After a long silence, the man slowly rose from his chair and replied, "Your Honor, when I put a dollar in a vending machine and a Coke comes out, does the Coke belong to me or the machine?"

RECIPES
Mushroom Swiss Burger w/Gravy Mayo Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) Oil or cooking spray Double Baked Stuffed Potatoes
2 cups sliced mushrooms
Serves 8 (or 4 hungry bikers)
1 onion, minced 1lb COLD, GOOD LEAN ground beef
4 BIG baking potatoes
1 tsp garlic, minced fine
8-10 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
½ tsp salt
1 c sour cream
¼ tsp black pepper
½ c milk
4 slices GOOD Swiss cheese
6 tbsp butter
1 tbs Mayo
1 ½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese
2 tbs sour cream
¼ c green onions, diced
1 tsp brown gravy mix (you can use more to suit your taste)
Salt and Pepper
Good quality bread buns
Preheat oven to 350
Romaine lettuce leaves
Wash and dry the potatoes, then prick holes all over with a fork to allow steam to escape
In a medium pan over medium heat, sauté onions in 1 tbsp oil until brown, remove from pan and set aside.
Rub the skins with 2 tbsp butter then salt and pepper well. The butter will help it stick.
In the same pan add 1 tbsp oil and the mushrooms, cook till tender, remove from heat and set aside In a medium bowl, mix together cooked onions, garlic, salt, pepper and very cold ground beef.
Bake for an hour. You can check to see if they are done by poking with a fork for tenderness Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes
Blend with your hands, making sure everything is well incorporated, but DO NOT OVER WORK OR IT WILL BECOME TOUGH
Slice potatoes in half lengthwise and scoop out the flesh with a spoon and reserve to a medium sized bowl You don’t want to remove ALL the flesh, leave a little near the skin so it will hold its shape
Meanwhile, mix the sour cream, mayo, and brown gravy together in a bowl, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Once you have all the insides scooped out into a bowl mix in the sour cream, milk, butter, 1 cup cheese, ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp pepper. Mix well with a fork or in an electric mixer, to the consistency of mashed potatoes with a few little lumps
Divide meat mix into 4 equal parts then each pat gently shape into patties, slightly thicker on the outside Lightly brush the grill or pan with oil and heat to high – I mean really HOT
Spoon mixture back into potato skins, place in a baking dish, top with bacon and cheese
Place each patty on the grill or into the pan (you should heat a good sizzle sound if its hot enough) and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, then flip over and cook the other side for a couple of minutes cooking to the level you like
And back into the oven for 15 minutes at 350 Remove and top with green onions to serve
For more great recipes, visit www.facebook.com/TheBikerChicksKitchen
Just before they are done, spoon mushrooms on each burger and cover with a slice of swiss cheese
Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy 50

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
