FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s with some trepidation that I optimistically look towards the next few months – and begin planning for a REAL riding SEASON. And not simply a season spent on a bike; but a time of bike nights, bike shows, rallies, and actually seeing folks out at events! We are pleased to head into the Spring with a full slate of events already on the books and even more preparing to announce new dates or plans for the upcoming season. Obviously, these plans are all contingent on things remaining open – and some even are done with the expectation that things will get even better by the time we’re called “Kick Stands Up” for their rides and events. After last year, most have learned to accept a certain degree of uncertainty – but we are all hoping for the best at this point. Here at Thunder Roads Ohio – we’ve decided to jump in with both feet and hope for the best, when it comes to the upcoming riding season. We’ve even moved forward with several new partnerships and launched new initiatives with their support. Working with THROTTLE COMPANY VINTAGE MOTORCYCLES, from Columbus, we’ve introduced a new VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE feature this month – START SOMETHING OLD, page 18. The Throttle Company folks are helping us with new original content – and a renewed sense of focus for our magazine on vintage bikes. This month’s feature focuses on the 1989/90 Honda GB500TT. We then turn the page and find ourselves considering a pair of incredible antique Knucklehead Harley-Davidsons that are headed to auction with Mecum in Vegas. (page 20) These are incredible bikes that clearly harken back to a time where things were a little less complicated then they are today. Heading in an entirely different direction, though, is our next feature – the 2021 DAYTONA THUNDER RUN, hosted by ReasonsToRide.com Thunder Roads Ohio has teamed up with RTR.com to expand the Thunder Run to Florida and the 80th Edition of what is billed the World’s Largest Motorcycle Event. By using Facebook and your cell phone, you’re able to easily take part in the Daytona Thunder Run without ever having to roll any dice or even interact with anyone at any of the locations! You can read more about this starting on page 22. Just by getting out and riding – you have a chance to win a $500 gift card, without any safety risk or cost to participate, other than the gas you use riding around! This new approach is fun and COVID conscious for those focused on those concerns. These online, digital ride check-in’s are actually nothing new for us, though. We first introduced and tested the system back in 2018 and 2019, well before masks were required anywhere other than Halloween and Mardi Gras. The DAYTONA THUNDER RUN is just a pre-cursor to the NATIONAL ROLL-OUT of the THUNDER RUN PROGRAM planned for later this year by our partners at ReasonsToRide.com. Here in Ohio, we will roll out the state-wide Buckeye Thunder Run in May. Masks or not, riders will be able to check in virtually through their phone at designated Rider Stop and Events all about Ohio. Our hope is that things will have continued to improve by then. Regardless, however, we know that folks will be riding in 2021. On page 8, I’ve shared a call put out by a motorcycle resource in Buffalo, New York – CyberSpokes.com. He calls on organizers to NOT CANCEL their 2021 events – because of the impact it will have on the riding community, and because it’s the RIGHT thing to do. I’d urge promoters and business owners to do the same – and I’d back that with the pledge to offer FREE BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - RIDE STOP DESIGNATION for those organizations and promoters committing to 2021 at this time. We are investing in the 2021 Riding Season – and we’d urge you to do the same. For more information, email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com. And to everyone, I’d say – “See you on the Road in 2021!” Sincerely, Derek Armstrong Publisher of Thunder Roads Ohio THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

ATTENTION BIKE EVENT ORGANIZERS:

PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL YOUR 2021 EVENTS! We have been notified that 2020 event cancellations have had a devastating impact on the charities and small businesses that we support with our motorcycle events. At a time when more Americans may need to rely on nonprofits after layoffs or furloughs, those same financial struggles have affected charitable giving. For many nonprofits, the event cancellations have been extremely detrimental to their abilities to raise funds. Virtual fundraising provides only a small fraction of the donations they would have received from the in-person charity events. The phone calls the nonprofit agencies receive asking for help have increased but funding has been cut due to state and local budget woes. Many of the small businesses owners who support our motorcycle events have invested their life savings and their financial futures in businesses, that they have worked to build up over many years, only to have that investment decimated by Executive Orders issuing from one man. Big-box stores, malls and casinos are all open. Hundreds of people are allowed elbow-to-elbow at protests and inside planes and subways. Over 6000 fans are allowed in The Buffalo Bills Stadium! Our motorcycle events do not present an increased risk of spreading COVID-19, nor has there ever been any credible proof or data offered of any such claim. The CDC has also come out in opposition to shutdowns as an effective way to stop the spread and cited the low transmission rates in public spaces. What are we going to do if a NEW virus gets released next year? Shut everything down AGAIN? Churches, gyms, bowling alleys, bars, restaurants, musicians, martial arts schools, hair salons, barber shops, tanning salons and pool halls have all ALREADY FILED LAWSUITS. It has been proven to work. It is time to fight back against these doublestandards and selective hypocritical enforcement that is killing our hobby, our charities, and our small business community! Those of us that may not have the money to hire a lawyer to fight for our rights will have to get creative. Make some protest signs of your choice and temporarily change your event name to a Protest. If it is not possible to have your indoor event, think about renting some large tents and moving to an outdoor venue. If your venue is not allowing events, think about moving to a location that does. We are BIKERS that believe in FREEDOM! If you want to stay safe, then stay home! We may have to still wear a mask or social distance, but it will still be fun! This article was written and first shared by the folks at CyberSpokes.com, a website promoting the Buffalo and Western New York motorcycling community. It’s reprinted with their permission – and we appreciate both that and the efforts they make to support the local riding community. Nicely done. 8

Follow us on Facebook at THUNDER ROADS OHIO for updates, photos, and more - updated DAILY. www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio NOW SCHEDULING 2021 EVENTS PLANS ARE UNDERWAY FOR THE 2021 RIDING SEASON, AND IT’S GOING TO BE AMAZING! As challenging as this year was – there’s every reason to believe that 2021 will be a blockbuster year for regional and local motorcycle events! Bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts experienced a year like no other – a year without many of the bike nights, rallies, and riding events that they have taken for granted for years. And for the few events that were able to be held, event organizers were blown away by the response. Despite all the dire warnings, concerns, and protocols over COVID – event organizers have been reporting record years as riders want to get out! Increased demand and interest in riding and powersports in general is also substantiated by record sales of used bikes, parts, and accessories. Of course riding is the perfect social distancing activity, but other factors include less professional sports and more “personal time”. It all means that more folks are hitting the road and there’s no reason to think that next year will be even better as we move past the COVID crisis and surrounding hysteria of 2020. So, we are encouraging event organizers to lock down dates and plans for 2021. It’s especially critical as many late season 2020 events have opted to re-schedule for Spring 2021 dates. Many of these event organizers are hoping to pull off an early season version to replace their cancelled 2020 event – and still be able to host their regularly scheduled Late Summer / Fall event. We would encourage everyone to email us with their event information and dates as soon as possible, especially if you’d like us there. We are excited to announce a RE-VAMPED Bike Show program w/ new SPONSORS and even MORE PRIZES / TROPHIES! We are also doing more HOT ROD / CUSTOM CAR / BIKE SHOWS as well – with new partners on board! We are looking to host more of these shows in combination with RACING events and RALLIES all across the MIDWEST. We will also be hosting more TATTOO CONTESTS and MORE PHOTO OPS’ at Bike Nights and other stops in Ohio and surrounding states. Take advantage of SPECIAL SEASON KICK-OFF RATES, while they last - to book your print and digital ads for HALF THE PRICE before they go back up with all the pent-up demand that’s already starting. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES March…March…March… Will there be madness?? Will there be mayhem?? Will there be anything that resembles green on the mount of me old Irish home??? Oh….hello. Sorry about that, got just a little carried away there. That is so easy for us to do, isn’t it? Or maybe it’s just me. It seems we can get a little overkill with lots of things nowadays. The politics got heavy, freedoms a little on the shaky side and ammo is over the top! Ever wonder why we get so carried away with our reactions to things? It is called passion. Passion causes us to overreact about everything that we find is affecting our lifestyle. Its what drives a racer to the finish line, or a sportsman to throw a 53-yard pass into the end zone for a touchdown and the receiver jumping up six feet to catch it. Its finding something that brings great satisfaction to us when we have put our hearts into a project and pushed ourselves to the limit to complete it just to say we did it! We can be passionate in many ways over many things, cars, motorcycles, talents, family, it is just in us. Passion is what Jesus had for us when He went to the cross and allowed all the torture, ridicule, and final pounding of the nails to finish His work here just so we could be freed from the darkness of sin and death. But what happens when the fire goes out? What happens when we lose the passion for what we once thought was the end all, be all? Has it become pointless? Is there no direction to carry on? That is what we call the end of the season and the beginning of a new spark. Have you ever been camping and had a campfire going at night, roasted hotdogs and marshmallows or biscuits on a stick? (Thank you Koolaid!) You sit out until the fire has nearly gone out and its still glowing with hot timber and ash, so you hit the sack because the night is done. However, if you built up enough of a fire to leave hot embers, when you wake up in the morning, you can fan the ashes a little bit and poof….a little flame starts, just enough to build up another fire for some fried bacon and eggs over the fire…new purpose for the fire! That’s the spark you need to get going again…a little fan to ignite the fire that has lain dormant in you, especially over the past few months! Find your passion again…don’t lose hope over the news or the changes you see around you! It is a new season!! I know, I know…I have mentioned season changes to you before, but I believe it’s an awakening time for us! Get ‘woke’ to Jesus my friends! He’s the waiting fan to spark you and get you going again! See you soon and don’t forget to check your ‘spark’ plugs! Mary G.

COB REPORT

Hi Friends,

As I start every article is with bad news that being stats it is not that bad, but we have not been riding much. In 2020 we had a mild start to year, so we got out early. At this point in 2020, we had 63 crashes and 2 fatalities. So far in 2021 we have 21 crashes and 2 fatalities. So, with 1/3 the crashes we still have 2 fatalities. I just hope we come out and behave because we do not need another bad year. With the Covid and all the slow down we had a total of 3966 crashes and 205 fatalities, back in 2019 we had 3582 crashes and 156 fatalities. Please everyone Ride SMART!! During the recent political campaigns if you were paying attention you heard a prominent candidate say they would look to eliminate fossil fuel and significantly reduce our dependency on it. At the same time, you have a very large state furthering a goal to eliminate combustion vehicles within three decades in favor or electricity and other alternate fuels. Transmission Problems, and Why They Are Always With Second Gear Shifting from one gear to another

The sport touring world is buzzing right now with news of a transmission recall for Yamaha FJR models from 2016 onward. According to NHTSA, there have been two reports of second gear failure in the USA, although there are additional instances in other countries and the recall is worldwide. This is a major repair, as it involves replacing both shafts and all the gears in the transmission. (See the sidebar for details on the Yamaha FJR recall.)

As we accelerate, engine RPM increases and we want to shift to a higher gear to drop engine revs down to a reasonable range. Shifting gears changes the gear ratio between the clutch and output shafts, so one or both of them must immediately change RPM. Since the output shaft has the momentum of the bike's rear wheel and drive train connected to it, its RPM stays nearly constant during the shift. Therefore the clutch shaft must suddenly drop RPM on an upshift.

Since the recall includes my FJR, many have asked me what the problem is, and especially WHY it occurs. It turns out that lots of bikes have similar problems and large sport touring models are among the most vulnerable. Let's begin with how motorcycle transmissions work. Motorcycle transmissions have two shafts The clutch shaft is connected to the engine through the clutch. It has a gear for each transmission "speed" that meshes with a mating gear on the output shaft. One gear of each pair has "dogs" on the side that can be engaged to lock a gear to its shaft or let it spin freely. The shift lever operates a cam that moves the shifting forks to engage and disengage the dogs on the gears. One set of dogs must disengage before another engages to avoid locking the shafts.

If the clutch is disengaged before shifting, it's just the clutch shaft itself and some of its gears that have to slow down. That reduces, but does not eliminate the shock force on the gears and dogs. Reducing throttle during upshifting slows the crankshaft but has no effect on the clutch shaft, as it is disengaged by the clutch- it only affects stress on the dogs and gears when the clutch is released. Remember, the moment the gear ratio changes is always the moment of greatest stress. Why are most transmission problems related to second gear? Look at the chart, which shows the drop in clutch shaft RPM when upshifting between gears on an FJR. By far, the greatest RPM drop is between first and second gear. That's where the most stress occurs. Another factor in second gear damage is the neutral detent between first and second gear, which makes it easier to miss the 1-2 shift by not getting the transmission all the way into second. When this happens, the clutch may be released and power applied, only to find the transmission is in neutral. A quick stab at the shift lever can engage second while under power with the clutch already released- a recipe for disaster. Look again at the chart. The drop in RPM between shifts is proportional to the engine RPM at the shift point, so the greater the RPM, the more stress on the transmission gears and dogs.

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

What about first gear? Isn't first gear just as vulnerable as second, since it's on other side of the big ratio change? No. First gear is only engaged when stopped or going slow just before a stop, so it rarely gets damaged. Fortunately, Avoiding transmission problems is simple

These four tips work with all manual transmission bikes. 1. Avoid revving the engine up to the redline in first gear before shifting to second.

Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, March 20 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Main St. Waynesville, OH 45068 Central Ohio Breakfast, 8AM, April 4 Portside Cafe 6515 S High St Lockbourne, OH 43137

2. Always use the clutch when shifting from first to second. 3. If you miss a shift, pull in the clutch and don't release it until you've positively engaged a gear. 4. If you want to use a quickshifter, at least use the clutch for the shift from first to second.

How Yamaha is Handling the Recall When Yamaha developed a fix and decided to do the recall, they created a training video to show technicians critical points on how to do the job. They had the new parts manufactured and created an amazing recall kit, including special tools, transmission cluster, crankcase bolts, orings, gaskets, tie straps, factory sealer, oil filter, engine oil, coolant, etc. 2103-03.jpg Transmission repair on an FJR is a major job- 2103-04.jpg bodywork must be removed, coolant drained, exhaust etc. removed. 2103-05.jpg Engine is removed from the frame and clutch and lower crankcase disassembled. 2103-06.jpg Both transmission shafts and all gears are replaced, everything reassembled. Start to finish is about 14 hours of labor. The recall is at no charge to the customer, in or out of warranty. I took advantage of the recall to get some major long-term maintenance done. Most of the normal cost of these service operations is in the removal of bodywork, exhaust, coolant etc. Since they already have these parts removed for the recall work, I was able to get the additional work done at a fraction of the normal cost. Clinton County Motorsports, in Wilmington, OH, ordered the parts kit and scheduled my recall work in mid February. The weather didn't cooperate, so I had them come and pick up the bike. The driver arrived right on time and the cost was very reasonable. In just three days the work was complete, but the weather was so bad they had to wait to test it. I didn't mind the delay- if the weather's that bad, I'm not riding anyway!

ºLD- 1989/90 HONDA GB500TT

gives you the illusion of tearing up the TT circuit. Riding the GB500 makes you feel like you are Mike “The Bike” Hailwood, the 14 time winner of the Tourist Trophy race, including 5 wins in row from 1963-1967 in the 500cc class (just in case you were wondering). Production was limited to just two years in the US due to poor sales performance. Why didn’t it sell well? It didn’t look like the cruisers that were dominating sales at the time. The 1980s were about excess and technology, not looking back towards racing minimalism. Hammer Time and Debbie Gibson, instead of British invasion. The combination of timeless styling and low production was a perfect recipe for the GB500 to become a collector’s item. For example, the 1990 GB500 pictured, alongside the 1966 Velocette Thruxton, sold at the Mecum Auction in Las Vegas in January 2020 for $17,600. It had one mile on the speedo!

Borrowing its styling from 50s and 60s race bikes, the Honda GB500TT was a modern café racer ironically ahead of its time. The GB500 was unlike any other motorcycle available in 1989. An homage to the 50s and 60s British bikes that ruled the famed Tourist Trophy circuit on the Isle of Man in England, it had the look of iconic bikes like the AJS 7R or Velocette Thruxton from decades earlier. The GB500TT (for Great Britain and Tourist Trophy) has a 498cc, air-cooled, single cylinder engine, and was unlike anything Honda had previously offered in the US. All of the bikes were painted a unique deep green so dark it looks black in anything but direct sunlight, with gold pinstripe accents. Featuring clip-on bars, a front disc brake, steel braided oil lines, silver instrument panel, and a sleek body design, all this allows the GB to run with precision and look cool as hell. Weighing only 370lbs, this thumper can scoot and its aggressive riding stance

The arrival of the GB500 was just too soon. Custom café racers are extremely popular and today most major manufacturers offer a café racer like the Triumph Thruxton, Royal Enfield Continental GT, and many more. On the GB500, you think you are a British racer from the distant past, but in reality, you are on a Japanese street bike from the late 80s that thumps to life with the push of a button, shifts smoothly, and stops quickly. All before it was cool... again. Start something old with the 1989/1990 GB500TT. A classic before, and after, its time! Vegas-Bound Knucklehead Duo Two unique Harley-Davidson Knuckleheads join Vegas MECUM lineup

The 2021 Mecum Las Vegas motorcycle auction will present a shockingly extensive selection of the iconic Harley-Davidson Knucklehead motorcycle with two impressively restored examples hailing from the estate of Richard Bernard. One is a first-year 1936 EL model previously owned by AMCA board member Dick Winger and the late owner of the Wheels Through Time Museum, Dale Walksler, and the other is a 1937 EL model previously used as a California patrol motorcycle. Both Knuckleheads have been concours restored to factory original condition, and they have been and will continue to be on display at Parham’s National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa, until the Las Vegas auction.

The late Richard Bernard’s obsession with motorcycles, HarleyDavidsons in particular, began in 1968 after seeing the movie “Hells Angels on Wheels” starring Jack Nicholson. Then, in 1969, after the movie “Easy Rider” came out, Bernard’s fate was sealed, and there was no turning back. It was during the following years, and while attending a strict Catholic high school in Wheaton, Illinois, that his obsession turned into action when Bernard befriended the late Dale Walksler. Walksler was working as a mechanic at the time at Villa Park Harley-Davidson, and their friendship soon kick started Bernard’s quest to accumulate as many old Harley-Davidson parts as possible. Then, in 1972, Bernard and Walksler built their first and only chopper together. The bike was completed in 1973, and it was nice but not quite spectacular for the times. However, in 1974, the chopper went back into Walksler’s shop, and what came out in 1975 was the bike as it appears today, featuring a new paint job, 12:1 compression, shovel heads, ported and polished, a cam and an S&S carburetor. In addition to building the custom chopper together, Walksler and Bernard also built a strong friendship that lasted nearly 40 years until Bernard’s passing in 2012.

Beginning sometime in the late 1970s, Bernard made it a point to attend nearly every swap meet, bike rally (Sturgis, Daytona Beach, Davenport) and auction that occurred from coast to coast across the United States, buying specialty parts and motorcycles that he felt were unique enough for him to own. In 1989, he purchased the 1936 EL Knucklehead from Walksler, and the original paperwork from the transaction still accompanies the bike today. Walksler had purchased that bike many years earlier from Dick Winger and truly did cherish it, but he wanted to invest the money into his HarleyDavidson dealership located in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The dealership went on to become one of the largest and most respected HarleyDavidson dealerships in the entire region. In 1994, Bernard placed the winning bid on a 1937 EL “California patrol” bike at an auction in Los Angeles, and it came with the original “pink slip” title. The bike was then delivered to and put on display at a museum that Walksler had recently established and dubbed Wheels Through Time, located in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. It was later moved to Heritage Harley-Davidson in Lisle, and it’s now on exhibit at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa.

In addition to the two Knuckleheads that he purchased back then, Bernard also bought other specialty bikes at auctions throughout the country, such as the drag bikes from the R. J. Reynolds estate: a 1976 Bicentennial-edition Harley-Davidson and a 1982 Sturgis-edition Harley-Davidson. All four of those bikes ended up on display at the National Motorcycle Museum as well, and John Parham purchased the entire group of them in 2014. In 1998, the 1936 EL was featured in the hard cover “tribute to an America icon” three-dimensional pop-out book by HarleyDavidson, along with the Harley-Davidson book “Chronicle” by Doug Mitchell. Then, in 2003, Harley-Davidson and the Miller brewing company asked Bernard if they could feature the 1936 EL on the side of the 20-ounce Miller Genuine Draft beer can as a tribute to the 100-year anniversary of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle company. Richard Bernard deeply loved and cherished these motorcycles for more than 30 years, and his brother, John, hopes that their next caretakers will continue to treasure them as Richard did and in honor of his memory. Doug Taylor Moonshiner & TRO Area Manager

SHINE 'N IRON

M nshiners and Motorcycles Ohio competitors bring home the wins on Discover Channel’s Moonshiner’s Master Distiller.

If you’ve followed the show on The Discovery Channel, you may already know that I won the Peach Brandy Episode and Shawn Rigsby, of Springfield, won the Mountain Vodka Episode. These wins earned us both the title of Master Distiller. In my opinion, these are both notable history making wins for the state of Ohio. Not only did we have two Master Distiller winners from the state of Ohio – but the other two Ohio competitors made it to the finals in their challenges. Not bad statistics for being Northern Yankees. On the show, they referred to me as the “Motorcycling Moonshiner” which I thought was an honor. While working for Thunder Roads Ohio, out in Sturgis in 2015 for the 75th Anniversary, we met the original Motorcycling Moonshiner, Josh Owens at The Buffalo Chip Campground. Josh Owens is both a regular on “Moonshiners” on The Discovery Channel and an avid motorcyclist. A year later, we ran into Josh again in 2016 for 75th Daytona Bike Week at The Cabbage Patch Campground while taking pictures of the Cabbage Wrestling and Bike Show. He has been racing with Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Racing since they started in March of 2016. He races on 1919, 1921 and a 1936 antique motorcycles. The vintage racing involves pre -1925 1000cc American V-twin engines, with racers often needing to fabricate handlebars, exhaust, fenders, footpegs, fuel and oil tanks. In 2019, Josh was involved in a bad motorcycle accident while racing in Daytona and suffered a broken back. After a long recovery, he was back racing in 2020. Unfortunately, the March Sons of Speed Race was cancelled due to COVID concerns, but he is hoping to be able to race when vintage racing series returns to Daytona in October of 2021. Beyond the vintage motorcycle racing, Josh also races the “gasser model” cars and even dirt track. Josh is also an active outdoorsman. He enjoys fishing with his daughter and other activities. We’re looking forward to getting back out on the road more this year – and hope to see Josh at many events. If it’s not the Maggie Valley Shine’ events – maybe at the track, out fishing, or maybe even ringside at a cabbage wrestling event! You just never know! Shine on and Ride Safe! The Devils Tongue

There are two types of people I despise. Thieves and Liars. I spent last week in California on vacation. I used to live in LA in 1993-94, so it was interesting to go back and see my old stomping grounds. Some things had changed, others remain the same. One thing about LA and California in general-- it’s a rough town and state. You can feel the tension everywhere you go. People are literally just trying to survive, less all the exotic cars and mansions I saw in Beverly Hills. This trip had me up in Oakland, CA for a few days. I made a rookie traveling mistake. I left a backpack sitting on the back seat of my rented SUV. Damn, I knew better. We strolled up downtown Oakland for dinner, and of course when I returned to the car the rear window had been smashed out, and the backpack was gone. The thief didn’t get much value, my favorite long sleeve shirt from the Last Resort Bar in Daytona, my favorite beach hat, a couple packs of smokes and a battery cell phone charger. It was more the inconvenience of having to go to the airport and swap out rentals than anything. But it did get my blood boiling. How I wished I’d have been walking down the street when it happened… It got me thinking about the type of people I despise, Thieves and Liars. I would hope most of us don’t hang around with known thieves in our clubs, but what about liars? I’ve seen it too often in my years in the club life. I’ve even seen groups of people lie to protect one brother, all while throwing another under the bus. It’s disgusting. Generally, those who lie will eventually get caught up in their lies. Although the worst are the ones who can work the shadows and tell half truths so that they are always protecting themselves in their lies. I’ve never understood why some people go to such great lengths to lie. Oh a few I know lie for personal gain, or to try to one up everyone else. But those that would lie on their own club brothers are the scourge of the earth. Depending on their position in the club, it can really set a horrible example too. My advice to those of you that have these types of people in your club is to be wary of them. Even if their lies might benefit you this time, they will surely turn it on you in the future if the occasion requires.

And for those of you that speak with the Devils tongue, you are worthless to your nation. My Road Name is Tabasco… Keep it REAL! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

KNOBLE MOTO TECH FEATURE:

Spring Inspection

The weather is starting to change and riding season is right around the corner. Now that it is not terribly cold in your garage, now is an excellent time to give your bike a once over before the season starts. You don’t want to wait for the first great riding day to pull you bike out and find that it needs parts. Plus with the current covid situation, parts can take longer to be located and delivered than we are accustomed too. • First point of attention should be the battery, so you will want to put your battery on a tender if you did not do that over the winter. This will help to top off any power that has bled away over the winter. In general it is an excellent practice to keep you bike on a battery tender when it goes long periods of time without being used. The cheap tenders at the local parts store work just fine. • Next you want to check to make sure that no critters have taken up residence in your bike. I once had mice eat a hole in my air box and fill it full of bird seed over the course of the winter. Luckily the air filter stooped the seed from getting to the engine.

• When you get a chance to take your bike for a ride and test the brakes. First test each brake individually for smooth operation and feel, then test them together. This is also a good time to practice some hard braking drills a few times on an empty road.

• You will also want to give your tires a good inspection. Check them over for dry rot, and give them a roll forward or backwards and check for flat spots. It is also a good time to check your tread depth, plus make a visual inspection of them to make sure you don't have anything sticking in your tire. Lastly check your tire pressure and fill them up. This should be checked at least once a week, if not more often, because you only have two tires, so keep an eye on them. Remember manufactures recommend that you run 90% of your make pressure in your tires. If it's 40 psi max, that means you should be running 36 psi.

• Last but certainly not least, you should check over your riding gear. Make sure you helmet is not older than 5 years. Check your rain gear for tears, leaks, or mildew. And maybe after all of that you can find a match for all those random gloves in your saddlebags.

• Next it is good to check each light for function and brightness, but also check that moisture has not gotten it's way into the light itself. Now is also a great time to replace hazed over lenses or dull light bulbs.

If you would like to learn more about keeping your bike on the road, consider taking a class from myself at Skidmark Garage in Cleveland Ohio. I offer classes in all aspects of motorcycle repair and maintenance. My website holds my class list and it is updated regularly. Www.knoblemoto.com

• As your inspection continues, look at the friction material on your brake pads. Minimum thickness is approximately .040”. For reference; that measurement is slightly thinner than a dime. If your friction material is worn down into that realm, it is time to replace your pads. • Inspect your cables for wear and corrosion. If they are still in good shape, squirt some lube down the cable and on the pivot points. Afterwards give all the fasteners a look over to see of anything is starting to back out. • Once you have completed the initial inspection, check all of your fluids and start your bike up. You will want to make sure that you oil light goes out, and you have no odd sounds coming from your engine. Let it warm up for a few minutes and then shut it off. Check for leaks, new problems, or odd sounds.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

A man walked into a bar on St. Patrick's Day and started ordering martini after martini. With each drink, he removed the olives and put them in a jar. When the jar was filled with olives and he'd finished all the drinks, the man started to leave. As he did so, a curious customer asked him, "Excuse me, but what was that all about?" "Nothing really," replied Paddy, "My wife just sent me out for a jar of olives." A guy walks into a bar, orders 12 shots and starts drinking them as fast as he can. The bartender asks, "Dang, why are you drinking so fast?" The guy says, "You would be drinking fast, too, if you had what I had." The bartender asks, "What do you have?" The guy says, "75 cents." Q: You know what's fun about being sober? A: Nothing.

Divorce logic A couple wants a divorce, but first they must decide who will be the main guardian of their child. The jury asks both the man and woman for a reason why they should be the one to keep the child. So the jury asks the woman first. She says, "Well I carried this child around in my stomach for nine months and I had to go through a painful birth process, this is my child and apart of me." The jury is impressed and then turns to ask the man the same question. The man replies, "OK, I take a coin and put it in the drink machine and a drink comes out, now tell me who does the drink belong to me or the Why can't you borrow money from a leprechaun? machine" Because they're always a little short.

RECIPES

This is an OLD family recipe my kids and hubby LOVE. It looks fancy but it is really easy to make! AND it can be made with just about any fish! Crab and Shrimp Stuffed Fish Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 8 fish fillets, thawed (any white fish will do) ½ tsp paprika ¼ tsp dill 3 tbsp melted butter 1 tsp Old Bay seasoning salt and pepper to taste Corned Beef in Guinness Serves 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)

Stuffing 1 can salad shrimp 1 cup imitation crab, chopped (or 1 can lump crab meat) 1 cup seasoned breadcrumbs 1 clove garlic, minced ¼ celery, minced ¼ cup onion, minced 3 tbsp butter, melted ½ cup mayo 1 tbsp lemon juice 2 tbsp Pinch dill Salt and pepper to taste

1 bottle Guinness beer (or other stout beer - or you can use beef stock) 1 cup beef stock 2 tbsp brown sugar 3 1/2 pound uncooked brisket for corned beef, rinsed well and patted dry 1 tbsp pickling spice 1/2 onion 1 head garlic, halved 1 head cabbage, sliced 4-5 carrots, cut into 3/4-inch chunks 1 lb of red potatoes, cut into 3/4-inch chunks

Mix together all filling ingredients, roughly divide into four parts

Preheat oven to 300. In a large oven safe pot (I use a cast iron dutch oven), stir together the beer, stock, brown sugar, pickling spice, onion and the garlic. Place in the brisket and bring to a simmer but don’t elt it boil – it makes a mess Once it begins simmering, cover the pot and place in oven to roast for 2-3 hours, flipping meat once during halfway point. Add in the vegetables and allow to continue cooking covered for another 2-3 hours or until the meat is fork tender Serve in a bowl with plenty of broth or sliced on a platter with a nice piece of crusty bread

In a foil lined cookie sheet, lay out 4 filets and lay one part of stuffing on each filet forming it to the shape of the filets, keeping it ¼ inch from the edge all the way around Place another filet on top of the stuffing, forming it to meet the bottom filet Brush fish with melted butter, old bay and dill on top of fish. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes or until the fish flakes apart

***This can be made in a crock pot too, just add a couple hours cooking time to the meat

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail. com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy 46

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT

The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

We’d also like to thank all of our subscribers... and of course the avid readers that bring it all together.Thank you for making all of this possible, for supporting this organization, and our families. Sincerely, The Thunder Roads Ohio Team.

Scavenger Hunt Winner: Merl Nethers
