FROM THE PUBLISHER For the last several years, we’ve dedicated our November edition of Thunder Roads Ohio to our nation’s Veterans. Our past Veteran’s Editions have featured a listing of offers and events – mostly centered around Veteran’s Day (November 11th) – along with a listing of resources and organizations offering services for Veteran’s and their families. This year, that is more of a challenge – of course – with COVID. Many Veteran’s organizations are holding back on programs and very few folks are doing much these days beyond simply trying to keep their families safe. It is an unfortunate and challenging time for everyone. Over the past ten years, our company has adopted a business plan that involved us not only publishing a magazine but also hosting and actively partnering with event organizers. We make no secret of this approach and it is a large reason we’ve become the largest regional motorcycle magazine in the nation. It was a great strategy that allowed us to develop a great support organization in the office which was supported by the events. It was a great plan – until COVID came and not only shut down the events but hamstrung all of the local businesses that support us. Who could have imagined a time when bars, restaurants, and local retail would be shut down or limited in such a manner? A year ago this all would be inconceivable, but that’s where we found ourselves in 2020. So, we were forced to shutter most of our operations and the home office itself this summer. We continued to publish while working remotely and had to make changes to our format as we put out the PANDEMIC EDITIONS. Like the rest of America – we had to make changes to survive and continue on in this new reality. Without the office and support staff, it was a challenge; and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we worked through these things. Survive, though, we did. We have continued to publish each and every month – remaining Ohio’s yearround monthly riding magazine. And we believe that one way or another, we will all be back on the road next Spring. So, we have begun rolling things out for next year and making plans for our return to the streets! We had a lot of folks ask if and why we would still put out a Veteran’s Edition this year. If there are no Veteran’s Day events and everyone is staying home – why would we publish an issue focused on such things? Just like our magazine itself – it was never simply about Veteran’s Day – it’s about the VETERANS! The people that have SERVED and SACRIFICED for our nation – so that we could enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that our nation offers. Now more than ever, we need to take the time and recognize not only these men and women – but their families as well. Even if there isn’t a Veteran’s Day Parade or gathering in your area – take the time to thank each and every Veteran you see. Make sure that your kids see this as well – teach them well, to appreciate the concept of SERVICE. That’s what this edition is about – even if there aren’t a lot of events or programs to talk about. WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR OUR VETERANS!

Similarly, our riding community is still out there. Most of us got out anyways and lots of venues started to host bike nights and rides by the end of the summer – but many of our favorite rallies and even local gathering spots were shut down for the year. However, the riding community remains, and we remain committed to SERVING it. We will remain publishing both print and digitally – serving and sharing the stories of our local riding communities. And this month, we want to especially thank the MEN and WOMEN that have SERVED our nation. Thank you and may God bless you and your families.

FREE RIDE REGISTRATION OFFERED FOR VETERANS EVENTS IN 2021!

Offer ON-LINE Ride Registration in 2021 ReasonsToRide.com (RtR) and Thunder Roads Ohio is now offering the ability to include RIDER REGISTRATION as part of your online event listings and magazine ads. This allows riders to simply and easily sign up for your event without ever leaving the website – and without having to register on-site the day of the event. Pre-registration allows you to more accurately plan for your event by having a listing of participants already committed and invested in it. Pre-registration also helps protect your ride from cloudy days that might also have people staying home, but will choose to still come out since they are already pre-paid.

TRO and ReasonsToRide.com will be offering FREE RIDER REGISTRATION for a limited number of charitable rides benefiting VETERANS and related causes in 2021. With the support of corporate sponsors and THE WARRIOR FUND, we can help cover all of the advance costs and allow your organization to focus on running the event itself – and we can handle all of the registration concerns! It couldn’t be any easier! Email us for more information at Events@ReasonsToRide.com

RtR is also able to offer RIDE SHIRTS and PATCHES as part of the process as well. Shirts are a great way to promote your event and offer more value to those participating. With advance sales and riders indicating what size shirts they need – you’ll also avoid having to invest in unwanted shirts. You’ll have exactly what you need. RtR can also help develop graphics and promotional materials – including posters and cards to professionally represent your ride. This helps with sponsorships and encourages ride participation.

TRO SPONSORING MEMORIAL PAVERS AT OVMP Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park offers the opportunity to etch paving bricks along the walkways in the park. These kiln fired bricks are extremely wear resistant and will hold up for generations. The lettering is baked with a ceramic coating and are a great way to honor those that have served or show our thanks. Thunder Roads Ohio and Iron Cowboy Productions will be sponsoring MEMORIAL PAVERS to honor VETERANS from the riding community and as a means of helping to support this moving tribute to all that have served and sacrificed. If you would like us to include a VET in this effort, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com and include MEMORIAL in the subject line. We will do our best to help cover the cost of as many as we can – possibly collaborating with additional sponsors as well. 6

Follow us on Facebook at THUNDER ROADS OHIO for updates, photos, and more - updated DAILY. www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio NOW SCHEDULING 2021 EVENTS Plans are underway for 2021 and expectations are SKY HIGH! As challenging as this year was – there’s every reason to believe that 2021 will be a blockbuster year for regional and local motorcycle events! Bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts experienced a year like no other – a year without many of the bike nights, rallies, and riding events that they have taken for granted for years. And for the few events that were able to be held, event organizers were blown away by the response. Despite all the dire warnings, concerns, and protocols over COVID – event organizers have been reporting record years as riders want to get out! Increased demand and interest in riding and powersports in general is also substantiated by record sales of used bikes, parts, and accessories. Of course riding is the perfect social distancing activity, but other factors include less professional sports and more “personal time”. It all means that more folks are hitting the road and there’s no reason to think that next year will be even better as we move past the COVID crisis and surrounding hysteria of 2020. So, we are encouraging event organizers to lock down dates and plans for 2021. It’s especially critical as many late season 2020 events have opted to re-schedule for Spring 2021 dates. Many of these event organizers are hoping to pull off an early season version to replace their cancelled 2020 event – and still be able to host their regularly scheduled Late Summer / Fall event. We would encourage everyone to email us with their event information and dates as soon as possible, especially if you’d like us there. We are excited to announce a RE-VAMPED Bike Show program w/ new SPONSORS and even MORE PRIZES / TROPHIES! We are also doing more HOT ROD / CUSTOM CAR / BIKE SHOWS as well – with new partners on board! We are looking to host more of these shows in combination with RACING events and RALLIES all across the MIDWEST. We will also be hosting more TATTOO CONTESTS and MORE PHOTO OPS’ at Bike Nights and other stops in Ohio and surrounding states. Take advantage of SPECIAL PANDEMIC RATES now being offered – to book your print and digital ads for next year for HALF THE PRICE before they go up in 2021. Email Events@ ReasonsToRide.com for more information. You can also enter your event directly ONLINE at ReasonsToRide. com for NATIONAL event listings! And as always – basic event listings are always FREE for Non-Profit and Charitable Events!

Opportunities for local riders to help support their riding community in 2021. With all the challenges faced during the 2020 Riding Season, it became clear that there was a much greater demand for local coverage across the state as more riders stayed closer to home for smaller rides and events. Going forward, this means that TRO will need even more help covering these events. There is an opportunity for TEAM MEMBERS to make money covering their own local area and representing the magazine and our partners at rides and events. A lot of this can be done remotely from your own home even over the winter. Email us today for more information on how you can get involved and earn money as a Regional Rep or simply working ONLINE. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Ahh…November… The way the sun shines on the trees really brings out the colors this time of year! It is like God is smiling on us, letting us know that everything will turn out just as it is supposed to. We have all had our fill of changes here lately, but not all change is bad. Every season has its perks. All we need to do is look for the good in every season we are in. Before I go any further into this article, I just want to say thank you to all the Veterans. Thank you for giving up your freedom to give us ours. You set aside your lives for a season, some gave their lives for eternity, all were affected and effective when called into action, regardless of how some wars went down. And when I see you still standing tall, whether on two feet or four wheels, saluting our Nation’s flag with the dignity and honor she deserves, it brings tears to my eyes. The scars are still there, though the wounds have healed and there are many of you who would stand and fight again if you were called to do it. Why? Because you love this Country, and you represent everything the Flag stands for and we are so proud of you. God is pleased with your willingness to step into the unknown and your reward will be as good as your heart is pure. Again, thank you. It seems so small on paper, but it is huge in my heart.

So here we are, in yet another season and I cannot tell you enough how much we missed being with you through the summer months! So now what are we going to do? Are we going to wait until Spring to arrive while we bury ourselves in our homes and hibernate like the bears do? Heaven’s no!! We’re going to get out and find places to go and people to see! It’s a great time to hit the road and find new adventures! The sun is still shining and there are so many roads and trails to find! Although these March through October months of 2020 have been quite interesting, they have still been enlightening! I found out that I actually can sit still for a short time! I also found out that Zoom is an awesome tool for connecting face to face! I found that a hug is way more valuable than a handshake, (or elbow bump). I found that people really do like to mingle with other people! We have missed each other because we need each other! God made us to be a family! He made us all different so that we wouldn’t be confused about who we are! It’s an amazing concept….red and yellow, black and white, we are precious in His sight…family. See? There is good in every season! I hope your seasons of change have been good, and I pray that you will find prosperity in the coming days and months. For all who have struggled and are still struggling through,

hold on, for the daylight is coming and you will be out of this soon. For those who have suffered loss of any kind, may you be granted the peace that will see you through the rest of the journey. For those who are dealing with illness of any kind, remember that Jesus came to save AND heal in every area of your life. And for those who have just lost your way…there is a path to follow that will bring you into a place of rest. I hope these articles help you in some way, I pray that you are uplifted and encouraged by the words given to me through the Holy Spirit. Don’t give up….you are just ten feet from the top of the mountain! Better ways and Happy Days! I salute you!

Mary G.

Resources for Veterans There are a wealth of resources and organizations dedicated to serving veterans and their families in recognition of their service and sacrifices made. There are a tremendous number of resources out there, many of which can be accessed by www.OhioVets.gov We wanted to include a few items here worth mentioning specifically, but will have far more online at www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com – just click on the veterans tab.

Veterans Crisis Line The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has established a national Veterans Crisis Line to ensure that Veterans in emotional crisis have free, 24/7 access to trained counselors. To operate the hotline, the VA partnered with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Veterans, family members and friends can call the lifeline number, 800-273-TALK (8255) and press “1” to be routed to the hotline and speak to a counselor about any issue that is creating a crisis situation in his or her life. Contact: 800-273-8255 or text 4HOPE to 741 741 (Ohio’s Crisis Text Line) website: www.veteranscrisisline.net Ohio Veterans Bonus A State Bonus for those serving in Afghanistan and Elsewhere This program provides a monetary bonus for those who served during the time of the conflict in Afghanistan. State Hunting and Fishing

County Veterans Service Offices

In Ohio, each county has a Veterans Service Office which is staffed with professionals that are certified and dedicated to helping Veterans, their spouses and children, as well as surviving family members of deceased Veterans. They can assist Ohio’s Veterans in applying for benefits earned by active military service. These include:

OHIO VETERANS’ MEMORIAL PARK A Living Tribute to All Veterans

The Ohio Veteran’s Memorial Park opened in May of 2009 with the dedication of a 125 foot long, polished black granite wall with the names of the 3,095 Ohioans lost during the Vietnam War. Since then, OVMP has added the names of all Ohioans who have given their lives during the War on Terror – including the Beirut Bombing. The Ohio Veterans' Memorial Park is constructed of many monuments honoring our Heroes. The flag-ship of the park is the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall. The west side of the one hundred and twenty five foot long, polished black granite wall contains the names of the 3,095 Ohioans who gave their lives in service to our nation during the Vietnam War. It is the longest free-standing monument in the nation. It is held in place only by its own weight. (The national wall in D.C. is held in place by an earthen backfill.) The west side of the wall is engraved with all of the conflicts that Ohio has been involved with, since the War of 1812. All of the photos on this section of the wall was engraved with actual photos of the wars with the exception of 1812. (There were no cameras). This side of the wall also contains the names of Ohio's Heroes since the Bombing of Beirut. OTHER FACTS ABOUT THE MONUMENTS •

It is the longest free-standing monument in the country.

The POW / MIA Reflection Pond is the largest POW memorial in the State of Ohio.

Our Gold Star Father statue is the first of its kind in the nation.

The granite that the wall is made from is quarried from the same site as the National wall.

The wall behind the POW/MIA Pond is designed to in respect to the National wall.

The Gold Star Mother Statue, that was dedicated to Sharon Lane's mother, the only female from Ohio killed during combat in the Vietnam War, stares at Sharon's name on the wall. This was not planned.

OVMP is dedicated to honoring all veterans from all wars and in peace, remembering their sacrifices for our freedom and safety, and celebrating their lives. The park is made up of numerous monuments and displays, which include: • • • • • • •

The Ohio Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall "As long as a man's name is remembered, he will never be forgotten." The west side of the wall is engraved with the names of the 3,095 Ohioans who gave their lives in service to our nation during the Vietnam War. The east side of the wall contains those who gave their lives since the Beirut Bombing up until the current date. The wall will soon contain the names of those lost during the Korean War. It is our mission to make sure that the sacrifices of our Heroes will not be forgotten for generations to come. It is vital to us, as a nation, to guarantee that those who paid the complete measure are honored and remembered. We must pay tribute to those that made our country, our freedom and our safety possible. The east side of the wall also contains engraved images and brief histories of the conflicts that Ohio has been involved with since the War of 1812. The American Revolution is not included because we were not yet a state. • The polished black granite wall is one-hundred-and-twenty-five feet long and weighs well over 100,000 pounds. • It is the longest free-standing memorial in the country. It is held in place by nothing but its own weight; unlike the wall in D.C. which has an earthen backfill. • The wall is made of fifty granite panels, each panel measuring 72" tall x 30" wide x 8" thick. • The foundation that the wall sits on is over seven feet thick and is made from steel reinforced concrete.

The Purple Heart Monument In June of 2013, The Purple Hear Monument was added to the Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park. This memorial is dedicated to all of those who served honorably and were wounded in service to our nation. The Purple Heart was originally established by General George Washington at Newburgh, 7 August 1782, during The War of the Revolution. The decoration was revived by the War Department on 22 February 1932, the two-hundredth anniversary of General Washington’s birth, thus paying respect to his memory and recognizing his military achievements. It is awarded to persons who, while serving in any capacity with the United States Military, are wounded in action against an enemy of The United States, or who since 6 December 1941 are killed in action, or die as a direct result of wounds received in action. Memorial pavers and benches in honor of, and memory of, those who have been awarded the Purple Heart line the walkways around the Purple Heart Memorial. Families and organizations are able to sponsor a paver in order to honor particular heroes and help support the Park. The Ohio Veterans’ Memorial Park has been built and is maintained by an all-volunteer work-force that is dedicated to saying “Thank You” to our Veterans. They need our support and could use men and women to help with events, lawn care, and maintenance. If you’re in the area – you may find this to be an incredibly rewarding way to help support and possibly become part of the team. For more information on volunteering, you can call the Park at (330) 529-4001. THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

If you’re not in the immediate area or able to support the park in person, they, of course, can use our support financially. The OVMP is built and operated entirely on private donations. They receive no funding from government agencies and rely entire on donations from citizens, companies, and organizations in order to operate. If you would like to help support the Park – visit them online at www.OVMP.org/donate Ohio Veteran’s Memorial Park 8005 Cleveland-Massilon Road Clinton, OH 44216 (330) 529-4001 OVMP.org

On Saturday, August 15th – the American Legion Portage Post 496 hosted the First Annual RIDE TO BE HEARD in partnership with Thunder Roads Ohio and ReasonsToRide.com. The ride was first created in reaction to Kent State University’s decision to not only feature Jane Fonda as a Feature Speaker on the 50th Anniversary of the National Guard Shooting at KSU – but to also barely even recognize those that served in the Vietnam War as a consideration of the times. They looked to erect memorials for injured protestors but ignored the more than 2.7 million American men and women that served in Vietnam and the more than 58,000 that lost their lives there. The RIDE TO BE HEARD was organized as a means of not only recognizing all that have served – but to focus particularly on those that served in Vietnam. Regardless of who was speaking on campus and what the KSU was saying – we wanted to make sure that the roar of our engines was heard in HONOR of all who SERVED IN VIETNAM. Kent Sate University ended up cancelling the events they had planned – but we were determined to still hold the ride in honor of the Vietnam Vets. After having to reschedule it several times, we were finally able to host the ride in Mid August – with riders leaving American Legion Post 496 and riding to the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park in Clinton, Ohio. Proceeds from the Ride are being donated to the Ohio Veterans Memorial Park and used to support local Veteran service organizations through The Warrior Fund. Special thanks goes out to Kim Kilbourne and the American Legion Riders from Post 496 for sticking with it and following through with the ride – despite all the challenges.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor MSTA Fall Colors Pandemic Non-Rally Lewisburg, West Virginia, September 23-27 Like so many other Motorcycle Sport Touring Association events in 2020, our annual Fall Colors Rally in Lewisburg, West Virginia, was cancelled due to COVID19 concerns. The weather forecast looked good for that weekend, so a few of us including Andray Hubble of Guntersville, Alabama, Gary Fourman of Indianapolis, Indiana, Helene Villemure of Columbus, Indiana, and I agreed to meet at the cancelled event's hotel to ride and enjoy the great roads in the area.

Lewisburg is only about 300 miles from home for me. Riding the FJR there and back would be easy enough. Helene had new tires on her bike and hates long boring highway riding, so she loaded her bike in a trailer to tow it to Lewisburg. Looking at routing, I found her fastest route passed to within twenty miles of my house. She offered to pick up and transport me and the bike, so I met her at Ohio route 73 and Interstate 71, leaving on Wednesday so we would have three days in Lewisburg to ride before coming home Sunday.

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

We stopped at Rio Bravo 2, a mom and pop authentic Mexican restaurant, in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, for lunch. The rest of the drive to Lewisburg was relaxing, and we got to see the progress on US route 35 construction in West Virginia. The new expressway to replace the last 15 miles of two-lane should be open next Spring. Yay! Helene and I rode by ourselves on Thursday. She works hard at her engineering job and it's difficult to get time off, so when she does get to ride she wants to maximize the experience. This means starting fairly early in the morning, riding a good pace, stopping very little. The more technical the roads the better, so I had prepared a custom route that featured Edray and Back Mountain roads, which are winding and narrow with no centerline, running through the mountains from North of Marlinton to Durban, passing near Cass, West Virginia, home of the Cass Scenic railroad. I have an extra Sena 30K Bluetooth communicator that I always bring with me on trips. Wednesday night we installed it in Helene's helmet so we could have intercom during the weekend. It was her first time using one and we had fun with them, pointing out things along the way including wildlife and objects in the road, safe-to-pass info, etc. Since Helene doesn't have a GPS on her bike yet, it was up to me to navigate and lead. Part way through our ride, I realized that since I was prompting her on the intercom when turns were coming up, there was no reason she could not lead if she wanted to. Helene got to ride her own ride, and I got a better look at her lines, cornering technique, etc. Our route covered almost 250 miles, and we were nearly back to Lewisburg before 2 PM. Rather than go straight to the hotel, we rode another 35 miles to the Swinging Bridge Restaurant in rural Paint Bank, Virginia, for an early dinner, avoiding the normal crowd.

The ride back to the hotel was an extra treat- Helene offered to trade bikes so I could try her Yamaha Tracer 900. It's nicely set up, including Ohlins suspension front and rear, and I got to ride it at speed on hilly, twisty mountain roads, as well as a short blast on Interstate 64. The Tracer is light, handles very well and the three cylinder 850cc motor is fantastic!

Am I a trailer guy now? No, I still enjoy long highway rides to and from events, but riding Helene's Tracer has made me think about some other things. For example, there are places in West Virginia that have lots of improved gravel roads. A mid-size adventure bike would be fun to explore them with, yet still be competent for sport touring on pavement...

By the time we got back to the hotel, Andray and Gary were there and we socialized with them for the evening. Rain from hurricane Laura started moving in after dinner, so I started studying radar and weather reports to hatch a plan for Friday. Storms were coming from the South, moving East and Lewisburg was near the North edge of them. I looked for a route from the previous Fall Colors package that went Northwest, figuring that would be our best chance to stay dry. The rain almost stopped by 8:30 Friday morning as we rolled out. There were patches of light fog, but after half an hour, all we had to deal with was damp pavement. A few hours later, riding out of Spencer, West Virginia, Andray and Gary got separated from us in traffic and made a wrong turn. We turned around to search for them, but after we unknowingly passed where they turned, they got back on the route and were now ahead of us. Of course these things always happen where there is no cel phone service, so there was no way to contact them. We lost half an hour searching, but eventually caught up with them having lunch at the City Diner in Gassaway. The route was long325 miles plus about 30 extra that Helene and I rode doubling back, but we still reached the hotel about 4 PM in light rain, but only for the last ten miles. Not bad for a rainy day! Mild cloudy weather was predicted for Saturday, and I knew we would need another long route for the pace we were running. Both previous days we had ridden North of Lewisburg, so the obvious choice was a route that went West and South. I found one about 250 miles in length and added two extra loops to it for a total of about 300 miles. The loops were roads I had never ridden but they turned out to be some of the highlights of the weekend.

Near the end, the route took us to the Swinging Bridge restaurant so we could have an early dinner, arriving at 3:30PM. Since it was Saturday afternoon, there were more people there, but we were still seated fairly quickly. Thank goodness for planning to arrive early! Sunday morning we said our good-byes, loaded up and I headed toward home with Helene. We unloaded the FJR at US route 35 and Interstate 71, about 40 miles from home and I rode the rest of the way. This weekend was the first time the FJR has been trailered to an event, saving over 500 road miles. Even with trailering, we rode our bikes about a thousand miles over the three days. This month, I decided to share a written thought from an MC Club member that I highly respect. Someone who lives his Club Life every day.

Shame on the Ones Shame on the ones who say they are solid and call you brother with no knowledge or experience pertaining to the meaning of their words. Nor do they show the strength and embrace knowing the importance which is also the greatest power that we all have and desire but some never get. That is the brotherhood that can only be lost by the ones who possess it. You should never allow that to happen because that what it is all about. Shame on the ones who embrace you and look straight into your eyes with nothing, because though he is you and you are him and together you are bound under the same patch. You still let them go and then walk away showing them you have no interest in knowing who they are. Shame on the ones that say you’re a product of your society when you don’t even know why society looks at you with contempt and unjustified judgment and says you’re a one of a kind yet you say nothing. You choose not to defend what you are about and represent because what you truly fear that same society has the power to incarcerate you over what you are supposed to be about and love. Yet a brother is supposed to trust in you to protect and be there for them when they need you and you cannot even stand up for yourself. Shame on the ones who have the knowledge but do not take the time or make the effort to teach others because you have DONE YOUR TIME. All you really have done is waist the time you had by allowing that same knowledge to slowly and quietly fade away as you are yourself when retirement has neared. Soon just like that unspoken knowledge you too will be forgotten and now nothing has been passed on, but then again, you’ve DONE YOUR TIME. Shame on the ones who lost their way on your nations path because the righteous and real always roll on straight ahead blazed by the ones before you. The ones that are lost are the same ones that get upset due to not getting their way because it is all about them. True brotherhood is always about every brother before yourself. Any personal agendas will always get in the way of true brotherhood because your thoughts are only about yourself. Shame on the ones who walk past your elders and founding fathers and do not stop and pay respects to those who came before you and helping all to have and enjoy what you are today. I will always have respect for the ones that come before and after me. Fisch Always Real I could not have said it better myself. My Road Name is Tabasco, Keep it Real! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

KNOBLE MOTO TECH FEATURE:

EXHAUST SWAP Part 3 “Re-Tuning Fuel Injection” Over the last two months we looked at removal of the stock exhaust and installation of a 2:1 Supertrapp SuperMeg on an 05 Dyna. So the third and final step is to re-tune the bike for the new exhaust. But first we will look at the basics of re-tuning fuel injection. Fuel injected bikes will adjust themselves for a new exhaust via the 02 sensors. BUT, that is only for a similar exhaust. If you switched from a stock system to something radically different like a drag pipe or side dump style exhaust, it will be too radical of a change for your fuel injection system to understand what is going on, so you will need a re-tune. However, many bikes are tuned slightly lean from the factory to help pass emissions standards, so a re-tune will adjust this and possibly unlock a little more power, even if you are just switching to slip ons *Check your local laws regarding this procedure. Do I need a re-tune? General a higher flow exhaust will initially make the bike run leaner (aka more air vs fuel.) If your injection does not compensate enough for this lean condition, you will notice things like popping during engine braking, or the bike will get louder when you roll out of the throttle. We all know someone who’s bike gets stupid loud when they roll out of the throttle. That is caused by a lean burning condition, and the popping is unburnt fuel igniting the hot exhaust. It ignites due to the higher exhaust gas temperature created by the lean burning condition. Remember, more fuel will make the exhaust cooler. (relatively)

Take it for a short ride and see how it runs. If you are just running slip ons, there is a good chance that this will be the only adjustment that you will need to make. *Note If there is a cap over your idle screw, you will have to drill it out. This is called a welch plug, and they were installed to keep the bike in proper settings with emissions regulations and to keep us from fiddling with it. Next ride the bike and pay attention to how it runs at low rpms. If it runs rough or surges you may need to increase your intermediate jet. Go one size bigger at a time, then ride it. Once it cools, check the spark plugs and see what color they are, and compare them to a spark plug color chart. Last of course is the main jet, and you will use the same procedure as the intermediate jet. Of course, there are a few companies like Dynojet who make complete jet kits for your bike based on upgrade. Just follow their instructions and install. They have already put the work into the engineering.

So the options for re-tuning fuel injection are have the dealer re-tune it, go to a dyno tuner, or you can do it yourself. Since Knoble Moto is all about the D.I.Y., we will look at doing it yourself. Vance and Hines, and Dynojet both offer simple & straight forward tuners. These are simple to use with either a supplied touch screen or an app for your phone. These tuners will plug into your bike, connect with your phone and then re-tune your bike to the appropriate exhaust and engine modifications. Their products will work with any brand of exhaust.

That's the basic in's and out's of an exhaust install. On my Dyna there was a notable power increase, especially at the low end. If you would like to learn more about keeping your motorcycle on the road, consider taking a class from Knoble Moto. All class listings are posted on the website and social media, and all classes are held at Skidmark Garage. KnobleMoto.com www.youtube.com/c/knoblemoto

If you have a carburetor on your bike you will have to rejet your carb. When swapping from a stock exhaust to an aftermarket one, it is rare that you will have to go more than one size on any single jet, but rare does not mean impossible. If you are doing this in your garage, here are some solid guidelines to go with. First, take it for a ride, and see how it runs with the new pipe. What rpm range does it seem to run poorly at? Write it down and take notes for reference later. Start with adjusting the idle circuit, then work your way up from there. Generally, when going to a higher flow pipe, you will need to richen the idle mix up a little. If we are talking about a stock Harley carburetor, only make adjustments of 1/8th turn at a time. On the stock carbs, the idle screw is an “air bleed circuit”, so the further you back the screw out, the more air bleeds into the idle circuit. That means you are getting LESS fuel into the engine. So, with the engine idling at full temp, turn the screw IN by 1/8th of at turn at a time, and then let the engine idle for a few seconds while the mix balances out. Keep making small adjustments until the engine rpm starts to drop, or the engine starts to run poorly, then begin to back the screw off until the idle smooths back out. This will set your idle just slightly rich and this will keep your bike idling cool and make cold startups a little easier.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

A Duck walks into a bar He approaches the barman and asks "Hey, do you guys have any bread" The barman is struck in awe as there is a bloody talking duck in front of him but answers in confidence "Nah can't help you mate" The duck walks out only to return a mere minute and a half later. "Hey, do you guys have any bread" he asks. The barman, now slightly annoyed but still amused, responds "Now as I said before and as I will say again, no we do not serve bread at this establishment" The duck walks out only return the mere second he walked out the door and asks the barman again "Hey, do you guys have any bread"

A small business owner was dismayed when a brand new corporate chain much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read BEST BLACK FRIDAY DEALS. He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading LOWEST BLACK FRIDAY PRICES. The small business owner panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own shop-it read... MAIN ENTRANCE.

The barman, now furious and burning with rage shouts at the top of his lungs "If you ask me that question one more bloody time I'll nail your beak to the barstool!" The duck, caught in a gaze that can only be compared to the thousand yard stare of a WW1 veteran fighter, asks in a calm yet silent voice "Hey, do you guys have any nails?" The barman declines. "Do you have any bread then"

RECIPES Darrell “Dwarf” Millar Killer Dwarfs

UNKLEDUNKS PIPING SHRIMP PASTA

As one of the most high-profile and well-traveled drummers of the hard rock era, Darrell “Dwarf” Millar has shared concert stages with the likes of Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, and Pantera. He’s also shared countless dinner tables with fellow musicians over the years and loves to show off his shrimp pasta when friends are touring through his native Canada. While Dwarf’s dish is definitely not short on flavor, Darrell does caution, “This pasta is for people who like food with some heat!” 1 (16-ounce) package of pasta 2 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 small red chile, diced (discard seeds) 1 teaspoon favorite hot sauce (Darrell likes Dave’s Insanity) 1 dozen peeled and deveined jumbo shrimp, fresh or thawed

1. Prepare pasta according to package instructions.

¼ cup Parmesan cheese

2. At the same time, heat a saucepan over medium heat. Add butter and olive oil to pan and sauté garlic for 2 minutes.

½ teaspoon garlic salt

3. Add diced chile, shrimp, and hot sauce to pan with garlic. 4. Cook, stirring occasionally, until shrimp are cooked through and pink, approximately 5 minutes. 5. Drain pasta and add to shrimp mixture; combine all ingredients thoroughly. 6. Divide evenly onto two plates, top with Parmesan cheese and garlic salt.
