FROM THE EDITOR

As the temperatures drop and the snow flies, preparations begin each year for the upcoming riding season. For us, it’s one of the busiest times of the year as we work with literally hundreds of riding organizations and businesses across the country as they attempt to lock down dates and begin planning. And while we are the “ad” folks – we’ve ALWAYS been a lot more to most folks.

When we first got into this business more than 20 years ago – it was as event promoters, not magazine folks. We started doing bar and restaurant promotions, then bike nights and small regional concerts. That led to motorcycle rallies and our partnership with what has become the “Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Event” – Ohio Bike Week. Our original Publishers worked hard to come up with unique ideas to spread the word about this annual event held in Sandusky, Ohio. This led to the production of a regional motorcycle, annual rally guides and ride calendars – and then the development of the Reasons To Ride (RtR) concept. RtR is much more than just a website or magazine. It’s an approach that includes both – digital and any print media – as well as a boots on the ground presence at rides, rallies, bike nights, bike shows… virtually event where riders are present. We are there to not only promote RtR – or the event itself – but all of our partners and the riding community as a whole.

We don’t just show up to have a beer and watch from the sidelines, or even to just take pictures. Our crew comes out to participate and HELP OUT. We help host events – sometimes producing Bike Shows or Tattoo Contests as part of the event. Sometimes we help MC or sometimes we even just help park the bikes. But we never just sit on our hands and look on.

We believe in PARTNERSHIPS – and the idea that working together we can all grow through each other’s success. This approach is why our advertising rates and sponsor packages are often at least a third less than even some smaller local motorcycle magazines – even though we might reach 2 – 3 – maybe 10 times as many riders.

We’ve been doing this for more than a dozen years, five as our new concept – Reasons To Ride. During this time, our platform has grown exponentially; and we now have new Reasons To Ride branded magazines distributed in at least 7 states in print – NATIONALLY online. As I’m writing this, we already have more than 500 events featured online for the upcoming year - already on track to more than TRIPLE the more than 1,800 we had last year!

So why am I sharing all of this? We are a different concept and I constantly find myself explaining – that we aren’t “just” a local biker mag. Nothing wrong with them – not at all – but it’s just not us. We want people to understand that we’re different and can offer a lot more! And most importantly, we need your help!

As we continue to grow and develop – there are tremendous opportunities for more events and businesses to get involved. We also have tremendous opportunities for those interested in joining the team. If you’ve spent the time building up your business – or your event – why not take advantage of every opportunity out there. Skeptical that we really do all this? That’s fine – give us a shout and we will show you how we do it!

And if you’re a biker that loves riding, meeting people, and when you show up at an event or party – you’re always the guy that helps out.. we should talk. You might as well make a few bucks doing what you love!

Until then - Ride Strong!

RtR adds EVEN MORE “Tabasco” to the MIX!

Reasons To Ride is proud to recognize Sean “Tabasco” Hall as a NEW Senior Editor and Publisher of RtR. For over 10 years, Tabasco has been a contributor and supporter of the crew – but he will now be assuming a stronger, leadership role within the team.

For over 40 years, Tabasco has been an active part of the riding community. As a nationally recognized and widely respected leader within the club world, he brings a different perspective to the discussion with his years of experience both on the road and within houses across the country. His long running “Final Word” column will be returning as the “Final CUT”. You may not always agree with him, but you’ll certainly know where he stands and most likely be left with a lot to consider after reading his message each month.

Beyond the pages of the magazine, we look forward to Tabasco bringing things to a whole new level – especially as RtR continues to grow both as a magazine and digital platform.

CONNECTING WITH RIDERS

Local riding organizations are invited to come and set up at regional motorcycle events.

Over the next several months, we will be setting up at and helping to host a number of fairly large motorcycle events starting with the WILD TURKEY FESTIVAL in Southern Ohio and then numerous rallies and events throughout Ohio, Michigan, and other states. And in between the rallies, we will be out at rides, bike nights, and other local events.

And all of these are great opportunities for local riding organizations to connect with riders…

Many riding organizations just think about setting up to sell t-shirts or to promote an upcoming ride, if that. Far too few consider setting up just as an opportunity to introduce themselves to other riders and the riding community in general. A booth with a banner in back and maybe a table with some swag or flyers about an upcoming event – allow you to connect with folks and deliver a strong message about who you are.

At the upcoming events, we would like to invite local riding organizations out to join us as we set up. This includes motorcycle ministries, veterans organizations, RC’s, and even MC’s. For some of the larger events, where there are thousands of riders, there might be a small charge by the venue for setting up a booth. In most cases it’s just $50-100 to set up. If you can sell a stack of shirts or sign up 20-30 more riders for your upcoming ride – that’s money well spent. Or if you connect with a few strong candidates or have a chance to

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

And here we go….

Hearts on fire! We are rolling into our second month of the New Year and last month I talked about stepping into the Jesus challenge. Maybe you did, maybe you didn’t. What if you did. What happens next? Where do you go from here? Is there a certain thing that you need to do?

You know by now after reading my articles that I am not a beat around the bush kind of person, so I will tell you straight up…you are gonna have to find a good place to park your tail and go to church. Yep…I said it…church. No, the ceiling will not fall on you when you walk in the door. Lightning will not flash, and the thunder will not roll. You do not have to give up your motorcycle and if you have long hair, you do not have to get a haircut! Hey…you can even wear your leathers…bugs and all! Trust me…that little grayhaired lady sitting in the pew has a burning desire to ask you for a ride someday…you are there for Jesus and she may be the very one to help show you the way!

You see, there are certain things you just can’t do on your own. You didn’t learn to walk on your own, you didn’t learn to talk on your own, or tie your shoes, ride a bicycle, drive a car, or ride a motorcycle on your own. Someone was there to show you the basics and from that point on you kept learning more about each one and got better and better with all of it, (well, hopefully, I mean with slip-ons, zippers, and Velcro there’s not much effort to put on shoes anymore!) Moving right along….

Every time we venture into something new, we need to have a little bit of guidance and instruction on it. In the God kind of life, it’s called discipleship. You can read about it in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Especially John. Jesus called the twelve men he chose at the beginning of his ministry and just simply said, ‘Follow Me’. They did. They weren’t anyone special, some fishermen, a tax collector, a winemaker, a zealot (radical biker basically), a lawyer, a doctor. Just your typical everyday life kind of guys. As they went with him, they learned. They listened to his teaching others, watched him do miracles, sat with him, ate with him, and mourned with him. And when they were ready, he sent them out to do what he did, and they all felt his presence with them. That is what he is doing today with us…sending us out to disciple others that choose to follow him.

I’m telling you…it’s not a bad deal. I rode one way for 23 years and then I ran out of road…When I asked for directions from the One I couldn’t see, He set me on the right road and for 25 years now I have ridden with Him with no regrets. The ceiling didn’t fall in on me either. As a matter of fact, I met Rex there…. I wasn’t even looking for that to happen. No regrets there either!

My friends, if you stepped into the challenge of change…know that it is a great place to start and a fine place to end the beginning of your story.

Bring it about, brothers and sisters…. Bring it about…

Mary G.

RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES Feb 2023 UPDATE!

We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well. After doing these shows for more than 12 years, its great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists between riders – and there’s even more of a connection between the folks that take the time to restore, customize, or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show!

It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! ! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you.

All makes, models, and years are truly welcome at the RTR Bike Shows. We have over 15 distinct classes for bikes, and we are constantly adding more as the shows evolve. We group bikes by style and origin, and try to balance things out as much as possible. Categories include designations for Imported and Domestic, Touring, Trikes, Vintage, Racing, and even Radical. Specialty classes include Custom Paint, Patriotic and Military themed bikes, and even a Ladies Class.

Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, these shows are for you if you have a passion for your bike. Go ahead and bring her out – and PUT HER IN THE SHOW!

Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide

Bike of the Nights!

As always, the RtR crew will be out and about hitting various Bike Nights, Rides, and other events throughout the upcoming riding season. At select events, our team will now be recognizing one or two bikes as “BIKE OF THE NIGHT” as part of the 2023 Championship Bike Show Series – presented by Michigan Biker Law. The owners of these motorcycles will receive a special trophy and invitation to participate in an upcoming bike show – sponsored by the magazine. We will also be featuring some of these bikes in the magazine and / or online.

At some locations, such as Arsenal Harley-Davidson in Waterford Michigan – we will be regularly presenting a BIKE OF THE NIGHT Trophy as part of their Bike Nights! Follow them or us on Facebook for more details!

If you’d like our crew to stop by your Bike Night or other event, just email us with details and contact information.

Email us at Events@ReasonsToRide.com

SHOW PICTURES

With over 10 years of shows, we’ve accumulated well over 30,000 Bike Show and event pictures on our Facebook page, with most sorted in Albums by the particular shows. If you’re home and feel like reminiscing about warmer days out on the bike, take a few minutes and check them out. You’re welcome to tag and share these as you’d like. We are working with some new partners to offer the ability to easily get these printed and sent to you – with just a few clicks. Hope to have an announcement on that shortly. Currently, however,

we do have the means to get you posters – even big vinyl banners for your garage – of any images we have. Our partner, NEO PRO IMAGING ( www.neoproimaging.com ) is able to do some amazing things with pictures – such as metal or acrylic prints suitable for mounting on the wall or professionally displaying. Email us for more information BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

We’re able to produce full color vinyl banners of photos or your design – for less than $2.50 a square foot!*

Thunder Zone Vendor Areas

For the larger weekend shows, we often host THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas as part of our layout. These vendor areas offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. Many of our shows are part of rallies and events with more than 10,000 in attendance, several more than 50k, and even a few 100k plus! And for all of our Tour Stops – we work with vendors to ensure a seamless, successful experience. However, at most – space is limited! So, email us ASAP to get on the list and reserve your spots! For a complete schedule and more information on vending at these events, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

UPCOMING 2023 SHOWS

Looking forward, we’ve made a commitment to further developing the Bike Show Series – with the addition of more larger, regional shows. We will still have smaller community shows, but we are adding more shows connected with FAIRS, FESTIVALS, and of course MAJOR MOTORCYCLE RALLIES and EVENTS.

that have pre-registered online. As previously, registration will be discounted in advance AND you get a FREE RTR Exhibitor Bike Show Shirt! We will be accepting bikes the day of the show – but only as space allows and priority will be given to the pre-registered ones.

WILD TURKEY BIKE SHOW

Reasons To Ride will once again be kicking off the BIKE SHOW SERIES in the rolling hills of Southern Ohio – with the 38th Annual Vinton County Wild Turkey Festival. This is some of the best riding in the Midwest – essentially an asphalt roller coaster – and in the midst of it all is McArthur, Ohio.

Last year’s show featured some amazing bikes; including 80 year old European bikes, custom choppers with intricate metalwork, and In our second year, we will be expanding to include more bikes, options for camping and official hotels, and a BIGGER THUNDER ALLEY!

ARSENAL BIKE SHOW

Arsenal Harley-Davidson, Waterford Michigan

- Saturday, August 26th

Last year’s show had to be rescheduled due to the weather and challenging forecasts, so we are getting a jump on this one in ’23. This show, presented by Michigan Biker Law, welcomes all makes and models and features over 40 trophies – including the chance for a BEST IN SHOW Championship Series Belt!

OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW

Reasons To Ride is pleased to announce that we will once again be hosting the OFFICIAL OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW in downtown Sandusky on Saturday, June 3rd – right on the WATER! This will be an informal, Ride-In, Bike Show following the RTR Championship Bike Show Series Rules and Procedures.

While always subject to change, our plan is to be right back at the same location we had last year in the midst of the WORLD FAMOUS BLOCK PARTY! If you joined us in 2022 – you know how amazing the location is. We’re literally surrounded by water on 3 sides – with the main stage in the background!

So go ahead and mark it on the calendar – OHIO BIKE WEEK, the LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT IN THE MIDWEST, May 26 –June 4th. And the OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW – June 3rd!

We are anticipating that feature bike space will be limited, so we are encouraging everyone to REGISTER as soon as possible for this show. We will be reserving space and assigned spots for bikes

REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM 15
Bike show photos by Dave Kimery, Brendan Farren, Dan Hare, and Tyler Roberts – RTR Team Members and Contributors

Obviously one of the most critical aspects of hosting a Poker Run is determining the route and stops of the actual run. Unfortunately, though, the critical considerations are not always so obvious. The overall success of the event though, is impacted dramatically by your choice of stops and the experiences of your riders at them.

If you are organizing this event for a charity or other group that doesn't necessarily have an interest in a particular location, you should assign the starting and ending locations to those sponsors / supporters that have contributed the most and have the means of properly meeting the needs of your event. The starting and ending points have the most promotional value, although it’s worth noting that if you're doing a bar run that's starting at 10 or 11am - the starting point may not serve up as much beer as those later stops. We will talk about sponsors more next month, but obviously they are a consideration in determining a route. Without a doubt, all your stops should be sponsors and your primary sponsors should be stops - if at all possible. As you begin planning your route, you should start by identifying the sponsors and their locations. You should also consider the practicality of bringing the ride through the locations and their appeal to your riders as stops.

When determining your route, you first need to identify your starting and ending point, and then you fill in the points in between. You ideally need at least five stops, but you can adjust that by giving multiple cards or skipping cards at the start of the run. (There are a lot of considerations to the handling of the cards - which we will discuss in another segment. Suffice it to say, though, that we are not necessarily always fans of simply having riders draw cards at each stop along the way.) Your route should be between 50-100 miles and most riders prefer to avoid highways. The route should not involve areas of heavy traffic, if possible, but there should be sufficient gas stations and other stops along the way for riders if need be.

Your starting and ending points are the most high-profile stops. Both points should have enough space for parking the bikes as well as any cages driven by others frequenting the location, your own staff, and other various vehicles. You can have smaller stops along the way as not everyone will be hitting them at the same time, but you need to assume that everyone (and then some) will be at the start and finish of the ride at the same time.

Generally, your starting point has less requirements then the ending point. You will need to make certain that there are accessible restrooms for those preparing to ride off. You will also need space, tables, etc. for registration and breakfast if you are serving it. The ending point is a little more critical, as most events plan around some sort of social activity at the conclusion of the run. DJ's, bands, pig roasts, dinners, etc.. are all great ways to conclude a ride event - but you will need to make certain that your final destination can accommodate all of your riders, volunteers, and folks that may just wish to show up for the party.

If you are hosting the Poker Run at a bar, restaurant, or other location that seeks to benefit from the business or traffic - don't dismiss the possibility of using a different starting point. The ending point is where most of the revenue is at and has the most potential for keeping riders the longest, so if you're the event planner - you want to keep that one. The starting point, though, is really a great opportunity to tie in a local dealership, a popular or highly visible destination (such as a state park or local landmark), or a key sponsor. I would make certain, though, that the alternative starting point brings something to the table. If they don't - just have everyone leave your place and then come back.

For example, I've worked on a number of poker runs where they had local service shops as sponsors. A bike shop may or may not be a suitable poker run stop, it all depends on the specifics of the location and what they have to offer your riders. I'm a big believer that any poker run stop should have something of interest to those participating. Stops certainly don't have to all be bars or restaurants; parks and cool riding destinations are ideal poker run stops. It also works nicely for both riders and the other stops, if they are not expected to spend a lot of time at every location. However, I don't think you should simply route all your riders through a stop where they simply get off their bike, get their card stamped, and then ride on. The ride should be fun and interesting, not just a race around town.

One of our favorite riding destinations (and surely a strong supporter of our magazines as well) is Bear's Vintage Metal Works in Ravenna, Ohio. They not only have a cool retail shop, but they have a vintage Harley themed museum as well. Lots of stuff to see and a cool poker run stop.

18 REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM
Bear's Vintage Metal Works in Ravenna, Ohio

You can always add some excitement to just about any stop - the key is to make it interesting but practical. For instance, a really great shot special or giving away free alcohol at a stop - doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense. For a variety of legal, liability, and logistical reasons - that doesn't make sense for a stop on the run, nor does inviting riders to oil wrestle at a stop (don't laugh, I've seen it). Needless to say, the folks that “lubed up” and or wrestled at stop #2 – may not make it through to the final stop.

However, a bike wash is a fun thing that can be held just about anywhere and doesn't necessarily involve getting riders wet. But it might not work well with a lot of riders coming through in a short period of time. A service shop might also offer free dyno runs as folks come through. Obviously, they can't run everyone through - but the shop could offer certificates for others to come back. This is a GREAT way to showcase the shop and get riders back in.

Things to Note regarding Stop Logistics:

• Avoid cross traffic stops whenever possible.

Elizabeth Russom, owner of AM Leather in Romulus MI.

When you identify potential locations, it's important to meet with the venue as soon as possible. You need to let them know what you are doing and what your expectations are of them. You will need to confirm that the date is available and that they are interested in having you come by.

Assumptions are rarely a good idea when it comes to planning an event. NEVER assume anything when it comes to your stops. Starting from the simple question of whether they want you there and if they will support your event. If it's a good location and potential partner but not necessarily already involved, you should go into sales mode. Sell them on your event. Sell them on your cause and sell them on you as an event organizer. Go over every detail with them and make sure that they realize that you are running a wellexecuted event.

As a motorcycle promoter and through my involvement with the magazines, I've worked with hundreds of different venues in regard to hosting events and rides. I've heard countless horror stories about poorly planned events - but I am still amazed at how often people tell me about groups simply showing up unannounced at a location on an "organized" ride.

• Advise local municipalities / law enforcement of each stop and your overall route.

• Each checkpoint should have some means of communicating with the event chair and other stops in case of questions or emergency.

• Confirm that adequate restroom facilities are available at each location (port-a-potties if needed).

• Have one designated contact at each location and make certain that they are on-site for the event.

• Confirm that supplies and all necessary materials are prepared for each stop and on site, the day before or morning of.

• The route and all stops should be pre-ridden at least 3 times, including at least one ride through the day before or morning of the event.

• Have signage for riders to see from the street –confirming the stop. (We can help with this – RTR)

• Have someone in the lot to direct bikes to where they should park if it’s not obvious, especially on larger rides.

ReasonsToRide can help promote your event for as little as $100 and has basic Ride Promotional Packages starting at $500 that can include online pre-registration, digital + print advertising, and even assistance with sponsors and on-site coordination. REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM 19
“A lot of ride organizers have found us to be a GREAT starting point for their rides, because riders can easily grab little things that they might have forgotten or simply need for the ride – such as gloves, sun glasses, hair wraps, or maybe even chaps or a good leather jacket. We can make sure everyone is ready. We can also set up coffee and donuts – or help arrange food trucks for later stops,”

Starting with the initial notification and a thought-out plan, a venue will appreciate and respect your event much more if you take the proper steps to work with them. A popular biker bar or riding destination may get approached by dozens of new groups every year asking them to host a stop. If you start off on the right foot, you will find that these venues can become more than simple stops - they can become partners.

Tony Allison, owner of The Villa in Huber Heights, OH welcomes all riders - but he can really roll out the red carpet for rides that help promote his popular biker stop. "We can do a lot of things, especially with our outdoor bar. If they make us the ending stop and have the riders - I'll roast a pig or put something out there for them."

As an event organizer, you need to recognize that this is business for most of the locations. Regardless of your cause or how passionate you are - it has to make sense for the owner of the bar or restaurant. Despite all the "scary biker" stereotypes you hear, the word is out, and people have realized that bikers have big hearts. We will actively support many causes and help out when we can, so virtually every charity under the sun has some sort of riding event. Local charities, needy families, and even major international organizations such as the Red Cross all come knocking on the door of popular biker hang outs asking for support or to host a ride. In a past life, I ran several popular restaurant / bars and I couldn't even keep track of the number of people that came by asking for support.

If you recognize this going in and take a proactive sales approach to your event, you will be much more successful. Here are some tips to pitching your event to a stop:

• Call ahead and schedule a convenient time to stop by and present your event.

• Don't simply show up and expect them to stop what they are doing.

• Don't ever stop by a restaurant or bar during their peak hours and ask to speak with a manager or owner. (It's disrespectful and even if they say it's ok - it's not.)

• Have an organized, thought out presentation prepared. This could include a list of other sponsors, pictures from last year's event, and a simple sheet outlining the event (a mock-up / preview of the event flyer works great!)

• Have a detailed plan on how you will market / promote your ride.

• Clearly present your expectations and what you would like their contribution to be. Spell it out with several options in terms of participation.

If you take a realistic, practical approach with these suggestionsyou should set yourself apart from everyone else that is asking for assistance or wanting to bring their ride through.

So, what is fair to expect in return for being a stop? At the absolute minimum, a location should commit to being open and properly staffed for your event. They should also commit to assisting

with the promotion of the event - hanging posters and handing out flyers and not gauging your riders.

"You need to make sure that your stops don't jack up their prices as your riders come through. Even if they raise the prices by just .50 or $1 - it's a slap in the face to your event and the riders coming through. But you would be amazed at how often it happens…" according to one regional ride host.

An involved bar or restaurant should also consider some sort of food special for riders - or simply putting out something complimentary In many cases, having hot dogs and chili is a great option. It's quick, easy, and very popular. If a bar or restaurant has a hundred riders coming through - they don't want to get bogged down with a bunch of menu orders. And riders don't want to get stuck waiting for their food while everyone else takes off for the next stop. Venues may choose to offer free food in order to get riders to spend more time at their stop. In many cases they can turn to their own suppliers to donate product which they can then offer to you. In return, you help promote their stop and possibly the company that donated the product. Many dealerships will offer to host a continental breakfast and offer bottles of water for riders to take with them on the ride – in exchange for being the starting point.

“We love being a starting point for rides and will usually offer a light breakfast, coffee, and water for riders,” commented Kari Cannady, Dealer Principal at Arsenal Harley-Davidson, Waterford MI (www.ArsenalHarley.com)

20 REASONS TO RIDE: GREAT LAKES EDITION POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM
"We get groups coming through all the time, and I just wish they would call ahead and let us know!" commented Bear, from Bear's in Ravenna. "The most frustrating thing is when a run comes through on a day we aren't even open!”

I strongly believe that every stop should contribute something to support a charity ride coming through, but that contribution needs to be practical in terms of the return they receive business wise. You cannot expect businesses to simply donate of themselves because of the worthiness of your cause. Some will, but it is not always practical to run a business that way - especially when you consider how many people ask this of them. Don't dismay though; the key to getting venues and other sponsors to support your event is to build a clear marketing plan. Capitalize on the promotional value of your event and offer sponsors the opportunity to share in the exposure you will generate. This is a win-win for everyone. You are creating real business value for sponsors and promoting your event at the same time.

It's also worth noting that “bringing riders to the ride” is a solid contribution. A dealership or bar might commit to actively promoting the ride and possibly guaranteeing to bring at least a certain number of riders to the table. For instance, a Harley dealership might offer to sponsor their HOG Chapter members – or maybe the

first 50 riders that pre-register at the dealership for the ride. This allows them to support their HOG members or simply get more traffic through their door as they support your ride and the cause it supports.

The real challenge of orchestrating a successful Poker Run is creating a positive relationship between the multitude of parties that you may find yourself working with as you plan and execute your event. Even on the most basic poker run, planning may involve: starting and ending destination venues, a charity organization and all of their volunteers / supporters, sponsors, riders, stops along the way (more businesses and organizations - and all of their people), law enforcement, multiple municipalities, media, local riding clubs that wish to participate, and the list can go on. A large part of your success depends upon your ability to balance the needs of everyone involved and making them all happy!

Good Luck!

Sport Touring Corner

Use Your Phone with GPS Route Files

Routes are one of the top attractions of Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) rallies. Someone who knows every local road has strung the best of them together so you can ride one fun road after another, all day, every day of the rally. GPS technology makes it easy for route masters to distribute event routes in standard GPX file format so rally attendees can load them on their GPS and enjoy self-guided tours at our rallies.

I create the routes for my annual MSTA FlyBy Week event in Marietta, Ohio, and help attendees load and use them there and at the many other rallies I attend each season. It's fun to help new people get acquainted and connected. Some who would like to use the route files don't have a dedicated GPS unit on their bike, but many do have a smartphone they can mount on their handlebar and power up from the bike.

Smartphones have many GPS apps available, but there is no way for me to learn and support all of them. I wanted to find one app I could learn, recommend and support, so I asked around on Facebook, got recommendations and figured out a short list of requirements:

1. App must work with existing MSTA GPX route files that were developed for Garmin and other GPS

2. App must be capable of voice-prompted turn-by-turn route guidance

3. App must be able to display tracks as well as routes on the map and support navigating them

4. App install and setup must be simple enough to explain in a tutorial

5. Procedure for import of GPX files should require only a few steps and be easy to explain in a tutorial

6. Must be available for both iPhone and Android so I only need to learn and support one app

7. Inexpensive (free if possible) so there is no financial barrier for those who want to try GPS navigation for the first time.

I quickly found three popular contenders that meet at least six of the above criteria:

Ride With GPS looked great until I learned that the subscription fee is $60/year. If someone came to FlyBy Week and asked for help using my routes on their phone, would they be willing to pay $60 for an app to do that? (They may only use it for my event and not need it again.) Probably not!

Rever 's $40/year subscription fee is less but still higher than I would like.

OsmAnd got my attention right away. It meets all seven of my requirements, plus:

1. Very easy to download and import GPX files.

2. Can display and navigate both routes and tracks, plus alert for nearby waypoints in the GPX file, so it works well with existing MSTA GPX files 2302-05.jpg 2302-06.jpg

2302-07.jpg

3. You can download and install the free version that allows up to seven states of downloadable offline map coverage. That meets the needs of most rally attendees with no initial or subscription cost.

4. If you want unlimited map updates and downloads, you can subscribe for only $9.99/year.

I downloaded OsmAnd on my phone, experimented with settings and tested it on a route in my neighborhood to see how it handled waypoints, off-route recalculation, etc. Then did a 100 mile ride using one of my Norms-rides routes. OsmAnd is fully capable once you have it set up and know how to use it.

Using the down time that came with the end of riding season, I developed a complete tutorial for OsmAnd and published it on the FlyBy Week website at https://flybyweek.com/osmand.html

RIDING w BRENDAN

I was certain I would be bored out of my mind at this point of the winter. While, I do miss riding, especially with the winter being exceptionally mild thus far in the Greater Lansing area, surprisingly I am doing as many or maybe even MORE events and functions than during the riding season. I have seen most of my good friends from my riding adventures and met many new ones that I look forward to riding with this year! I have been making my rounds to clubhouses as often as I can, recording podcast episodes all over the state, going to winter and charity events put on by clubs and independents and learning about or being invited to a million other gatherings. I have been amazed at the rate my calendar filled up this year. It kind of happened in a flash. All of a sudden I am doing this ride that ride and every event I can fit in-between. Support for Reasons to Ride Magazine has skyrocketed and we definitely feel and appreciate all of your love and support! The launching of “Riding with Brendan Podcast” has been a hit as well! RtR is either sponsoring or having a major presence at almost every big rally in the state (more announced soon). I am REALLY looking forward to all the things going on this year. Riding season is soooo close yet seems so far at the same time. I am kicking things off with Daytona Bike Week in March, give a shout out on Facebook if you’re going down, It would be great to meet up with some Michiganders/Ohioans while we are down there, swap some stories and have a beverage. If any of you have events or rides or ANYTHING you want to see us come out to reach out if you’re looking for outings to kill time until it’s time to get the bike out go online to reasonstoride.com and find some awesome things going on even in the colder months. Being in the community sharing our passion is what this is all about. Until next time.

Drop a Gear and Disappear on the Backroads of Appalachia!

We are thankful and grateful for an incredible year of growth, expansion, and motorsports adventure here at Backroads of Appalachia as riders and drivers begin to take the to discover what Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Southwest Virginia, and Eastern Tennessee has to offer. This year Backroads of Appalachia and the Whitley County Motorcycle Group hosted 35 charity motorcycle events and over 30 Car events covering over 10 thousand miles of riding/driving with over 14 thousand motorcycle participants in attendance. We also had over 27,000 motorsport enthusiasts come and visit our region this year, and we are overwhelmed and humbled by their continued support of our efforts. We were also fortunate enough to go on tour attending multiple National and Regional Motorcycle Rallies to include Sturgis, Daytona Bike Week, and Thunder Beach 2022, on our unwavering mission to spread the word to all riders about what we have to offer them here on the Backroads of Appalachia. This year we also launched our free Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application sponsored by the USDA, created and branded over 50 GPS-Enabled Trail Routes with over 4,000 miles of “Appalachian Awesomeness” and an incredible 1,200 “Uniquely Appalachian” Points of Interest that can only be found in our application. Our application is currently available free for download for Apple and Android devices. We have worked hard to develop our trail system to ensure we have something to offer every type of rider here in our neck of the woods regardless of your riding style or experience. From the curve loving, thrill seeking, floorboard scraping sport bikes and hardcore riding crowd to the2-up riders looking for a different experience and the epic scenery of our mountain overlooks and history that only the

Central Appalachian Region can provide and we are just getting started! Over this winter, we will continue to expand our trail system and offerings to include gravel and off-road riding for adventure touring motorcyclists as well as the ATV and off-road crowd.

What makes Backroads of Appalachia a unique organization in the motorsports world is that we are a 501(c) (3) Non-Profit Organization dedicated to helping our impoverished region by bringing economic development to the forgotten coal communities here through motorsports tourism. We are an all volunteer organization funded by a generous operating budget provided by the State of Kentucky, grants, and private donations. The only revenue our organization generates is from merchandise sales online and in our welcome centers which helps us pay our staff to include Second Chance Addiction Recovery Employees.

Each route we design and release is focused on giving riders the absolute best experience possible while also bringing them through these small communities to enjoy their local history, restaurants, lodging, and small businesses. We are an organization dedicated to making a difference and we thank all our riders who came to visit us this year.

We truly believe we have the best riding anywhere in the U.S. and all without the commercialization, traffic and high cost of travel. Don’t take our world for it, on your next motorcycle adventure come and visit us here in the place were we call home on the Backroads of Appalachia.

36 slices of pepperoni (a few extra for topping)

½ pizza toppings (small diced onions, green peppers, mushrooms, black olives, etc.) Optional-not included in carb count

• Sprinkle flattened chicken with 1/3 the Italian seasoning, then spread 1-2 tbsp of spaghetti sauce over it

• Lay 12 slices of pepperoni over one end of the chicken, covering about half the area

• Sprinkle with 1 tbsp parmesan then 2 tbsp mozzarella down the length of the chicken

• Layer on any additional veggies you want to add

• Then starting at the end with the pepperoni, roll the chicken towards the other end, tucking in anything that falls out

• Place the roll into the prepared dish and complete the other two

• Pour the remaining sauce over the top of all 3 rolls, then add any extra pepperoni slices

• Sprinkle on the remaining parmesan and mozzarella cheese and toss the garlic cloves around the edges of the rolls
