FROM THE TEAM

For us, May is the official kick off to the riding season!

While many of us have already been riding and there are some that try to go yearround, there are very few that can pull off a “Joe Rothbrust” – he’s been out on the bike riding, for at least one day, for 98 consecutive months! That’s every month for more than 8 years! And yes, that’s all while living in Northeast Ohio – he’s not a snowbird.

So, let’s clarify that we are referring to the summer riding seasons – and that we are now approaching the start of that season and all that it brings. Bike Nights, Rallies, Poker Runs, Bike Shows, and so much more! For the most part – it’s all kicking off in May!

This magazine is dedicated to supporting the local riding scene, by providing a means of easily promoting local rides and events. We serve to connect riders with reputable charity rides and events, rallies worth attending, and bike shows to check out – and maybe even take part in!

And that’s what I’d like to discuss here. If you’re not already, we’d like to encourage you to take the next step and get involved. Instead of just coming out to the bike show, maybe put your bike in the show! It doesn’t have to have thousands in extra chrome or a 36” front wheel – although that’s all cool. It just has to be a cool bike that you enjoy. Maybe you’d had it painted or added some touches that make it yours. And it doesn’t even have to be immaculate – a few water spots and some dust just means you’ve been riding… and that’s kind of the whole idea.

In terms of the rides and other charity events – find one that supports a cause you believe in and see if you can help out! Participating in the rides is great – riding for a reason is a great feeling and your support can make a difference. It’s why the organizers are making all the effort to host the ride. But that feeling of satisfaction that you feel for contributing to the cause goes up exponentially when you’re involved.

Folks that are new to riding or don’t really have anyone to ride with often ask – “How can I find others?”

You might go online and post a notice on Facebook – that’s a thing, Or you can find a cause or event that you like – and offer to help! Get involved and you’ll be amazed about how great you feel. And that riding circle you have? It will grow exponentially as well.

Thinking about Joe Rothbrust – the most amazing thing about him, isn’t that he’s been out riding in Northeast Ohio for 98 consecutive months. It’s all the other things that he does for the riding community – mostly off the bike. He’s served as an Officer and active Director for a local Harley Owner’s Group (HOG) for years. He’s also an Officer and ambassador for a Masonic riding organization. Both of which not only commit him to lots of riding – but to hours and hours of behind the scenes work.

It's folks like Joe Rothbrust that make a local riding community strong and robust, with lots of worthwhile activities for riders. So, we’d like to encourage everyone to get involved and “BE LIKE JOE”! Not that Joe – but Joe Rothbrust a true BROTHER out on the road, in every sense, even if you’ve never met him before.

And if you’re already actively involved in events or a local riding organization, let us know if we can help! That’s kinda what we do!

Respectfully,

The RTR Crew

RIDING w BRENDAN

So It Begins

Well FINALLY! Here in Mid-Michigan we had a run of amazing riding weather (immediately followed by snow but I’m focusing on the positive) I got my bike back ready to go from the guys at 508 in St Johns and I took full advantage of the warm weather. It was like we could breathe again and the sights and sounds of all the bikes out made it seem like mid summer.

Already having some rides and events on the calendar made me appreciate the weather even more. Most of you I assume, have heard of Autorama in Michigan in downtown Detroit. It’s held every year close to spring and they have a good showing of cars, trucks and of course bikes of all makes, models and years. What you may not know is that Ohio has a similar and dare I say, BIGGER version of this event called Piston Power Show in Cleveland every year. As I have learned the Reasons to Ride Ohio team runs the bike show at this event and has quite the presence there. I was invited down by my editor Derek to check it out. Low and behold I was free on the Saturday. I grabbed up my girl and made there three hour trek southeast.

The event is held at the I-X Center right next to the Cleveland Airport and if you have not seen the I-X Center it resembles a big airplane hangar on one side and almost an Ice rink from the front. Sherise and I made our way in and found the Reasons to Ride crew and set up. It was good to see everyone again it had been since Ohio Bike Week last year since I had seen most of the Ohio crew. We spent a couple hours walking around checking out all the incredible cars. While I am not a car guy by any stretch of the imagination I can definitely appreciate the time and effort that goes into these builds not to mention the money. Once we got back to the motorcycle area I quickly noticed a familiar trike low and behold my buddy Harold whom I met up at Easy Riders Rodeo in Fowlerville last year. What a solid guy. We chatted with

him a bit when Sherise noticed her outfit matched a chopper in the group and we ventured over to ask the owner if we could snap a couple pics of her in the saddle. The owner(whose name escapes me, very sorry about that.) was more than happy to let her on for a quick round of pics. We spent the rest of our time at the event chatting with bike owners and the Ohio Reasons to Ride crew then departed for the ride back to the Mitten.

A little more than a week later kicked off the charity ride season in the MetroDetroit area. We met up with Shelly and the crew from Michigan Biker Law at A.M. Leather in New Boston for the ride to benefit Golden Key Camp, Bikes and Battle Buddies as well as Zero Duck Thirty.(First one of a series for these organizations check Reasons to Ride website for more info) After spending the morning seeing a ton of familiar faces, speaking and hanging out with the hosts, riders and vendors I had to head to the Greater Lansing area for a bit more of a somber event. It was time to take my buddy ‘Old School’ to his final resting place. It was nice to see some of the faces since it had been since last season since I had seen some of em I wished we were together under happier circumstances. After the ride everyone met at Old Schools house for some food and stories then went our ways eager to see everyone again soon.

As I am typing, my thoughts can’t help but wander to the incredible pace that bike accidents are happening this season ALREADY. While we all know and have to accept the hard truth that goes with our passion to ride which is, we inevitably lose a couple of our riding brothers or sisters every year and more times than not its due to the negligence of others. As early as this season is I can’t believe how many people I know and heard about passing away in motorcycle accidents. Its way too many. Keep your head on a swivel out there you are my people I don’t want to lose any of you and if you’re a cager pay extra attention this is crazy!

The season is upon us suckers LETS RIDE!!! Until next time…

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

April Showers bring May…

BIKE BLESSINGS!!! Oh yeah!! Time to roll ‘em out and get in line for the Season of Blessings coming your way! So many are open to you in all areas around the State! Starting on Saturday May 6th at No Cages in Plain City. May 7th in Lima at Shawnee UMC, bikes roll in starting at 9am, come early, it fills up fast. These are only a couple I have on the top of my brain, but there are more in Dayton, Cinci, Cleveland, Toledo all over Michigan and our CMA Brothers and Sisters will be there to pray over you and your machine as a covering for the Season!! What happens if you miss out on one?? NO WORRIES!! We are always out and about somewhere and when you see us, ask us (if we don’t ask you first!) and we will stop what we are doing (if possible) and go with you to see that you are covered! We are always here when you need us!

That reminds me of a story…I’m told that a sheep is the dumbest animal on earth. But yet, it is the most trainable. When it is raised from birth by its shepherd, it is taught to listen to only one voice. It understands who feeds, protects, shelters, and keeps it. So, while it may be the dumbest of animals, it is the most well trained and will not usually wander too far. What happens if it does wander? I mean, there have been times when you hear about a little one getting away from the mama and wandering away. As a matter of fact, there was one that was told about in the book of Luke, chapter 15:4-7. The Shepherd had one hundred sheep out in the wilderness, one got lost. He left the ninety-nine and went out to find the one and when he did, he laid it on his shoulders, rejoicing that he had found it! That’s how Jesus feels about us! Because He is the good shepherd! And in John 10:11, He says, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”

Now hold up…don’t be stopping here and saying, “Did I just hear you call me dumb?? You just called me a sheep!” Hey…better a sheep than a goat! You don’t want to be a goat! I will leave that for another day. Being a sheep is a good thing! Think about it… not only are we teachable, but we can also be led. And in that leading, we can be trained to lead. When we pay attention to the Shepherd, when we heed His voice, our lives are made so much simpler. Life is already one big roller coaster ride after another and when you add in the big bad wolf around every corner, it seems you can hardly breathe from one moment to the next.

So why not get out in the field with the rest of the flock and be sheltered from all of that when it comes pounding in? It’s going to come regardless, but at least under the protection of the Shepherd, you have a greater survival rate!

So, here’s the wrap: Don’t be a wolf in sheep’s clothing, you will be spotted a mile away. Be real with others, be true to yourself, and accept Jesus for Who He is, the Good Shepherd of your life, waiting to lead you into great things if you let Him!

Jesus ‘n’ ME will see you in the wind!

OHIO BIKE WEEK 2023

May 26 – June 4, 2023 Sandusky Ohio

Ohio Bike Week is the “Largest Motorcycle Event in the Midwest” and one of the largest in the nation! It draws riders from across the Midwest and nation – with the largest percentages being from Michigan and of course – Ohio. It started as a HOG Rally hosted by community organizers – but then transformed into an open call for riders to come and celebrate the start of riding season on Ohio’s North Coast. The ten days of rides and activities culminate with the “World Famous Block Party” the 2nd weekend on the streets of downtown Sandusky.

Over the years, Ohio Bike Week has constantly evolved as rally organizers have sought to further develop their concept and bring even more riders together each year. And it’s really the riders that make this rally. Certainly there are a lot of really cool places to go and things to see along the “Vacationland” stretch of Lake Erie, but it’s the folks that really separate this from other rallies for us.

Ohio Bike Week is once again offering a VIP All-Access Pass which allows you to get upfront and personal with the performers. A limited number of these are available for purchase through OhioBikeWeek.com These always include a lot of bang for the buck – and are a great way to show your support for the Rally. This year they are offering the choice of a discounted VIP Block Party Pass for $99 which includes access to the VIP areas as well as a limited edition Rally T-Shirt. The “Rock & Ride VIP Pass” builds on this by including all of the ride registrations as well. With both, you also receive the special “Collector’s Edition VIP Pass Credentials” and a lanyard to hang it from. It’s kinda cool – and the passes always have a unique look to them.

Ohio Bike Week features an Official Ride each day, and these rides have become as much a tradition as the Rally itself. The Wednesday Kelley’s Island Dice Run and the Jesse James Dupree Charity Ride (Thursday) are two of the long standing favorites. And of course the George Roeder Memorial Parade on the second Saturday is a site to behold. You can find out more information on each of the rides at OhioBikeWeek.com

OBW IRON & INK TATTOO PARTY!

Friday, May 26th – The Jack Daniels

Barrell House Saloon

This year’s Tattoo Party is moving down to PARTY HQ – the J.D. Barrell House Saloon, right on the water! This is a party for those with ink (canvas) and those that create it (the artists) – as well as those with an appreciation for! It’s a fun celebration of the art, as we introduce folks and share a little about the stories behind pieces in some cases. A mix of prizes and recognition for those participating and their artists – including cash prizes, trophies, and placards. There’s also a great chance that you might see your artwork featured in the magazine. Register in advance at ReasonsToRide.com – and receive a FREE T-shirt! Bonus prizes for shops participating, and there are great opportunities for shops to showcase their artists and art as part of the show. For more information email Info@ReasonsToRide.com

OHIO BIKE WEEK SOUND COMPETITION

Saturday, May 27th – Mad River

Harley-Davidson

New this year – is the OBW Sound Competition, hosted by RTR in partnership with Unit2 Customs and Hollywood Custom Cycles. This is a judged sound competition with 5 distinct, defined classes. Cash and trophies are awarded – with $500 being awarded to the BEST IN SHOW bike!

The OBW Sound Competition is being held at Mad River Harley-Davidson on Saturday, May 27th – with check-in’s starting at 11am. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, as we are restricting the number of participants due to a variety of constraints and our intention for the show to go smoothly for all. Register online at ReasonsToRide.com

OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW

Saturday, June 3rd – Jackson Street Pier

Reasons To Ride will once again be hosting the Official OBW Bike Show downtown on the water, with registration and bikes exhibited on the Jackson Street Pier during the Block Party – Saturday, June 3rd. This is an informal, ride-in bike show like no other – with Cash and Prizes, including trophies and placards for winners across more than a dozen possible classes. All makes and models are welcome, and winners will be chosen through a system of public voting with weighted judges’ ballots. It’s a relatively casual approach that lends itself to a day of fun and camaraderie amongst folks with a love for two wheeled (and three) iron.

We would strongly encourage everyone to register in advance for this show. Not only will you save a few dollars and get a free show t-shirt, you’ll also have a spot reserved for you on the pier. Space will be a premium and priority will certainly be given to those registering in advance. You can register and find out more on this at ReasonsToRide.com or on the Ohio Bike Week Bike Show Facebook event. (www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide)

OHIO BIKE WEEK 2023

Key StopsJACK DANIEL’S BARREL HOUSE SALOON

Certainly, our favorite place to escape to during the Block Party is the back outside deck at the JD Barrel House. (Just don’t tell anyone… we want to keep it a secret!) No matter what’s going on a few feet behind you in the Saloon – looking out over the water is amazingly relaxing. Then when you’re ready – turn around and step back into the chaos at the undisputed PARTY HQ of OBW!

The Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon is at the end of the Barrel House Pier – which during Bike Week is stocked full of vendors, motorcycles, an occasional stage and bar or two. But as you make your way back, it’s clear you’re making your way “through court” to reach the KING of BIKE WEEK BARS. This is always where the party is – and this year, the entertainment is second to NONE!

RALLY TIP: Many of the HARD-CORE Party Bands are scheduled at the Barrell House, and you’ll want to visit their Facebook page for the final schedule and any updates (that will surely happen). Local favorites include OLD SCHOOL, SPAZZMATICS, and the EARTHQUAKERS. This is always the closing stage in terms of end of the night performances and is the go-to place in times of inclement weather.

MAD RIVER H-D

Mad River Harley-Davidson is the presenting sponsor of Ohio Bike Week and plays host to Rally HQ for the week. For most folks, this is the landing spot for when they arrive in Sandusky. You can pick up your VIP and Concert tickets within the dealership, and the lot is filled with vendors and hundreds of bikes for sale! Last year, they added the Mad River Saloon – which was an undisputed hit with live music and fun throughout the entire week!

The other big attraction at Mad River H-D is the Harley-Davidson Factory Demo Trucks. You can stop by and test ride all the new 2023 Harley’s – including the Pan America, the Sportster S, and even ALL THE CVO’s! You’ll want to visit the Ohio Bike Week Facebook page or website to confirm the schedule for the demo rides. They are traditionally not there the last Sunday and will close down if the weather is considered adverse.

RALLY TIP: Need a place to stay? Check out the Crystal Rock Campground. It’s right around the corner from Margaritaville and a short ride from both downtown and other area attractions. It’s a nice family-owned campground with cabins, hookups, and primitive camping as well. Call 419-684-7177 or visit them online at www.CrystalRockCampground.com

RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES May 2023 UPDATE!

All makes, models, and years are truly welcome at the RTR Bike Shows. We have over 15 distinct classes for bikes, and we are constantly adding more as the shows evolve. We group bikes by style and origin, and try to balance things out as much as possible. Categories include designations for Imported and Domestic, Touring, Trikes, Vintage, Racing, and even Radical. Specialty classes include Custom Paint, Patriotic and Military themed bikes, and even a Ladies Class.

It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you. We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well.

Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, these shows are for you if you have a passion for your bike. Go ahead and bring her out – and PUT HER IN THE SHOW! Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide

Bike of the Nights!

As always, the RtR crew will be out and about hitting various Bike Nights, Rides, and other events throughout the upcoming riding season. At select events, our team will now be recognizing one or two bikes as “BIKE OF THE NIGHT” as part of the 2023 Championship Bike Show Series – presented by Michigan Biker Law. The owners of these motorcycles will receive a special trophy and invitation to participate in an upcoming bike show – sponsored by the magazine. We will also be featuring some of these bikes in the magazine and / or online.

At some locations, such as Arsenal Harley-Davidson, Scooters, and Freddy’s – we will be regularly presenting a BIKE OF THE NIGHT Trophy as part of their Bike Nights! Follow them or us on Facebook for more details!

If you’d like our crew to stop by your Bike Night or other event, just email us with details and contact information.

Email us at Events@ReasonsToRide.com

Thunder Zone Vendor Areas

For the larger weekend shows, we often host THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas as part of our layout. These vendor areas offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. Many of our shows are part of rallies and events with more than 10,000 in attendance, several more than 50k, and even a few 100k plus! And for all of our Tour Stops – we work with vendors to ensure a seamless, successful experience. However, at most – space is limited! So, email us ASAP to get on the list and reserve your spots! For a complete schedule and more information on vending at these events, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

Cincinnati, Ohio Tradition: Comet Bike Night

Writing this column in mid April, I am poised to start the sport touring rally season at the MSTA North Georgia Classic Rally, but since it isn't until next week, I rode to a bike night last Tuesday. I don't attend them very often, but it's always fun to go on the first really nice warm and dry evening of Spring.

This bike night's home is the Comet- a Northside Cincinnati neighborhood bar and restaurant featuring Mexican food, a variety of drinks and craft brews. It's a favorite gathering place for Cincinnati Cafe Racers group members, so it attracts a lot of colorful characters.

Cafe Racers stalwart Todd Steinway is the host, and he's been doing the event every Tuesday evening, year round, for over 18 years. Todd's friend George DuChaine regularly takes pictures and posts them on Facebook. Both of them helped me with some of the pictures in the article.

Come hang out, have some food and maybe a live band late. Early birds begin arriving around 6:00 PM, the main action starts around 7:00 and goes to about 10:30, depending on weather and bands playing. Expect a lineup of all kinds of bikes parked on the street- cruiser, sport, ADV, classics, garage customs, you name it.

Backroads of Appalachia! - Reasons to Ride Partner

Spring has sprung here in the Appalachian Mountains as the leaves return and the flowers bloom along our 52+ trail routes here on the Backroads of Appalachia throughout Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Southwest Virginia and Eastern Tennessee. I think I speak for all riders across the country when I say we are all ready to ride and we are all glad that old man winter is going away after a long season of our Iron Horses being corralled. All of us bikers are ready to make some thunder and some more memories as another riding season begins to take shape. Here on the Motorcycle side of Backroads of Appalachia, the all volunteer Whitley County Motorcycle Group Road Crew is already putting the miles down to prepare for our biggest season yet as riders across the country start to discover our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application and the best riding in the country, on the road less traveled, here in the Central Appalachian Region. We want everyone who comes here to our backyard to have the best and safest riding experience possible and we train and check our routes each year to make sure that is exactly what happens. This season the Backroads of Appalachia/WCMG team will attend 6 major motorcycle rallys and host over 30 events and rides for charity as we continue to spread the word and bring the bikes here to the small towns across our trail system helping them economically develop after years of hardship since the coal industry left us. .

So who is the Whitley County Motorcycle Group(WCMG) and why do we do what we do? The Whitley County Motorcycle Group(WCMG) is a Motorcycle Riding Group and Community located in Eastern Kentucky. We are part of Backroads of Appalachia, a 501c Non Profit, and our mission is to create and develop the best riding/driving routes and motorsports events in the Appalachian region. We help the small towns

and small businesses across the Appalachian Region economically develop through Motorsports Tourism. We are a public Facebook riding group composed of members from the local area as well as around the world. All of our events are for charity and everyone is welcome to join us regardless of what you ride or what other groups you belong to. If you love to ride and you are looking for information on what Kentucky and the Central Appalachian Region has to offer join us by finding our group on Facebook. We are patches with a purpose and as grassroots as it gets and we are on a mission to help those in need as well as an entire region with every trail route we map, event we host, and charity we support. We know there are many places you can go this year and many other groups out there you can belong to but in our riding group everyone is welcome and what makes us unique is that you can ask questions and gain information about our events, rides, routes, and local area directly from the riders who live here in these mountains. We are a community by bikers for bikers regardless of what you ride and our motto is “It doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you ride.” Come and ride with us this year in the place we call home by attending one of our events or by using our Backroads of Appalachia GPS-Enabled Mobile Application to start your Appalachian Adventure today without the traffic or high cost of travel. Every time you come here and ride you are helping an entire region begin to recover and prosper with every stop you make along the way and trust us there are many amazing places to see here. No stop and go traffic in these parts, Just open road, plenty of curves, and the incredible scenery and history that only exists right here on the Backroads of Appalachia!

Mushroom Swiss Burger w/Gravy Mayo

Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers)

Oil or cooking spray

2 cups sliced mushrooms

1 onion, minced

1lb COLD, GOOD LEAN ground beef

1 tsp garlic, minced fine

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp black pepper

4 slices GOOD Swiss cheese

1 tbs Mayo

2 tbs sour cream

1 tsp brown gravy mix (you can use more to suit your taste)

Good quality bread buns

Romaine lettuce leaves

In a medium pan over medium heat, sauté onions in 1 tbsp oil until brown, remove from pan and set aside.

In the same pan add 1 tbsp oil and the mushrooms, cook till tender, remove from heat and set aside In a medium bowl, mix together cooked onions, garlic, salt, pepper and very cold ground beef. Blend with your hands, making sure everything is well incorporated, but DO NOT OVER WORK OR IT WILL BECOME TOUGH

Meanwhile, mix the sour cream, mayo, and brown gravy together in a bowl, and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Divide meat mix into 4 equal parts then each pat gently shape into patties, slightly thicker on the outside

Lightly brush the grill or pan with oil and heat to high – I mean really HOT

Place each patty on the grill or into the pan (you should heat a good sizzle sound if its hot enough) and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, then flip over and cook the other side for a couple of minutes cooking to the level you like

Just before they are done, spoon mushrooms on each burger and cover with a slice of swiss cheese

Allow it to begin melting but don’t over melt while in the pan or on the grill or the topping may slide off lol

Serve on toasted buns with gravy mayo and lettuce

Serve HOT with a good brown mustard and crusty bread
