FROM THE PUBLISHER

Happy Riding Season!

With our fifth issue of the year, we officially declare the riding season to be upon us here in the Midwest.

It’s time to break the bike out, if you haven’t already – and take to the road!

It’s time to get out to the bike nights and prepare for the rallies and bike shows.

It’s time to re-aquiant ourselves with our Brothers and Sisters of the road – the ones that are outside our off-season circle of friends but we still greet with open arms when our paths cross.

And it’s time to get back engaged within our riding community if you’ve spent the winter hibernating.

Now that last one is something to consider. If in fact, you’ve been outside the riding community in the off-season – I’d challenge you to consider that as you make your plans for this season.

The fact is that the rewarding friendships and camaraderie of the riding community don’t have to be limited to the times we’re on our bikes. You just have to become more engaged – beyond simply crossing paths with folks while riding.

As you’re looking at the events planned in your area, consider which causes or organizations you might want to become more involved in. While you’re out and about, consider which groups you might want to ride more with. Consider which you might want to help during the off-season.

The sad truth is that a lot of our most iconic rides and events are starting to fall off the calendar as the organizations lose volunteers and the folks running them are simply getting tired. Even with the most endearing causes and dedicated organizations, many groups are calling this year their last or are starting to wind down their plans.

COVID took a toll on many organizations and accelerated the decline of many memberships. One or two years off left many realizing how much time they had devoted to the events they volunteered for and the weight they bore. It left many of them contemplating the end of even 20, 30, or even 40 year or more events.

These organizations and the events they put on need new blood and energy. And if you’re an active rider but haven’t really become involved in any riding organizations or causes – now is the time for you to get involved. These groups need your help – and the riding community needs them.

And if you’re not sure of any groups or rides in your area, you might even consider getting involved with a local grassroots riding publication, such as Reasons to Ride! We need local riders to help cover the events and ride stops in your area. And with your support, we can help actively support and get the word out for the rides and charitable groups that make your riding scene what it is.

In so many ways, we all need to get involved. We can no longer sit on the sidelines and leave it all to others. And the cool thing is – that it all becomes so much more rewarding when we become involved.

Unsure? Shoot us an email and we can help get you engaged! Info@ReasonsToRide.com

Let’s Ride!

Sincerely,

D.A. Smith

LOCAL RIDE PARTNERS SOUGHT

RtR Looking for Riders or Organizations to help coordinate informal local rides.

Reasons To Ride is looking for local partners to help host informal local rides in different areas. We will help promote the rides and provide shirts and other materials for participants. We are looking for organizations or even individuals in different areas that might be up for hosting the rides. We are envisioning these as daytime rides, starting with lunch or breakfast and then offering an interesting destination or two. For example - this month we are going to host an informal “Rise & Ride” run from Johnny’s Pizzeria & Grill. Johnny’s has a nice outdoor patio and serves up a great breakfast. We are offering a “Rise & Ride Breakfast” special that includes breakfast, coffee, a ride shirt, and a donation to support local charities for just $20. However, we are making the ride free to join – no purchase necessary. Everyone is welcome to join in. We are inviting people to come out starting around 9am and plan on leaving by 11am – heading to a local farmers market in Amish country and then to Old Firehouse Winery in Geneva-on-the-Lake. Riders can set their own pace and can certainly head to other destinations after the first one or two. It’s an informal ride.

Our goal is to create informal ride groups that welcome any riders to join in. Men or women, any make or model – and even any year. Vintage bikes are welcome, and indeed the program was originally envisioned as a vintage bike ride. However, we decided that we didn’t want to exclude anyone with that designation.

So if you’re an experience rider that knows the local riding community, and maybe has organized or lead rides before – we’d love to talk with you. If you have a local riding organization that would be interested in partnering with us to promote a regular ride – maybe once a month – we’d love to talk with you.

We’d also welcome any motorcycle ministries that might consider partnering on such a program in your area. We certainly consider this a type of outreach, but we are looking to connect riders of all sorts – and welcome everyone, regardless of their faith. If you’re good with that approach, we’d love to talk with you.

Just email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com for more information.

Ride Stops!

With the start of the riding season, we will soon start announcing winners for our 2024 Ride n’ Win Riding Challenge! This challenge isn’t a skills challenge – it’s a challenge to just get out and ride as much as possible and share where you’ve been. We encourage riders to explore new areas and check out new events. We challenge riders to join us at new rallies and rides all across the Midwest – and even at some of the biggest national events across the country. And along the way, we’re looking for new places to stop!

Since its launch in 2011, this program has evolved and grown every year as we try to improve things and ensure that it’s a great time for everyone. This year is no exception, as we add even MORE STOPS and WAY MORE PRIZES! Our primary area of focus for our Midwest stops is across Michigan and Ohio. However, we will are also adding stops throughout West Virginia, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania as we develop our new Reasons To Ride: Appalachia magazine and in upstate New York and even Southern Ontario as we expand in that direction. Our magazines cover some of the best riding in the country and there are literally thousands of really cool stops to discover.

If you own a business, are hosting a ride or other motorcycle friendly event, or would like to recommend a place for riders to visit – shoot us an email for more information on how to become a ride stop.

Over 50,000 riders have participated in this program since launched – and we’ve awarded over 5,000 prizes – including motorcycles, travel packages, rally passes, concert tickets – and of course HUNDREDS of t-shirts and other swag!

For more information, email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES

Be who you are….

This statement has been used numerous times over the years, even to include it in many articles. The truth is that in this small little statement is a big reality, isn’t it? How can one be something they are not? How can we be one way at home, and another way in public? There’s an old saying from long ago that states, “A leopard can’t change it’s spots”, this being stated about those that have lived a certain way and acted a certain way to the point that they probably will not ever change. Kind of sad, really. To think that no one can change or worse yet, to think that even if there is a change in anyone, no one will accept it. Does that mean we are all hopeless? Absolutely not!

I am a blue jean, boot wearing, t-shirt comfortable, leather happy kind of a girl. I enjoy the speed and sound of my motorcycle bursting through the wind. Warm summer nights and a good thunderstorm when I am not on the bike. A dress can be worn periodically as well, however when I do, everyone says, “Wow, Mary is wearing a dress!” Shocking…even at church. However, it doesn't make me any different than who I am in jeans. Way easier to ride in jeans, though… can’t brake well side saddle. The point is the person is still the same. Still enjoy the ride, still love my Jesus. So that brings me to another portion of thought. It’s often said that Bikers cannot be real Christians, and Christians cannot be real Bikers. Most Bikers believe that if they come to Christ, they immediately have to turn in their riding gear. I didn’t. The change happened inside, and it didn’t matter what I chose to ride, what mattered is who I chose to serve.

The great reality is that when I was not serving Christ, I was not being who I was created to be in the beginning. The spots, so to speak, were added with each misstep that I had taken in life and when reality hit, the spots were erased because of the One that bled on the cross. So the change on the inside began to shine through on the outside and while a lot of old friends still welcome my presence in the crowd, they know there’s a difference from the one who was and the one who is today….and because they know it’s better than before, they know I am who I say I am because of the One who lives inside of me. And I happen to think He loves to ride too!

May is Motorcycle Awareness month and I know we will be seeing many of you on the State Capital steps

in Ohio on May 4th while we do our Run for the Son ride joining ABATE Awareness riders and then again on May 5th at the Shawnee Bike Blessing in Lima, Ohio. Bikers making the world aware of us and Jesus making Bikers aware of Him. See the beauty of the circle there?

It’s time to go now…Thanks for letting me share my heart with you. You are an asset to the world around you, more importantly, you are very valued in Christ and He accepts you just the way you are when you accept Him for who He is.

See you in the wind…

Mary G.

OUTREACH REPORT: MAY 2024

DON’T FORGET YOUR SPONSORS

With riding season upon us, many folks are switching from planning to actually executing their rides and other fundraisers. And unfortunately, that’s when many groups completely forget a key group that had previously been a priority… their sponsors.

Leading up to the event – make CERTAIN that you recognize sponsors in social media posts and of course advertising for the event. DON’T underestimate the importance of advertising your event – not only to promote the event itself; but as a means of recognizing your sponsors! Your sponsors may be watching and afterwards, you can let them know that they were featured on ads, posters, and handbills circulated to hundreds of locations!

Here are some other tips, from our “How To Host a Poker Run” Series which you can find on our website and blogs.

During the Event.

Make sure that you make your sponsors part of the program on ride day.

• Invite them to set-up or participate in the Ride. Give them a number of “passes” or invites for them to use or hand-out to customers, friends, or family.

• Frequently announce / recognize sponsors throughout the entire event. It’s worth having a DJ / MC for this alone if necessary.

• Hang banner(s) recognizing sponsors prominently at both check-in and at any after-ride festivities.

• Take photos that include the sponsor (their business, their logo, their people..) whenever possible. Make it clear that they are part of the ride / event.

• Make sure that you save any programs (mentioning sponsors) or signage. You’ll want these for follow up with sponsors and your lead-up for next year’s ride / event.

After the Ride.

When it comes to your sponsors – it’s ESSENTIAL that you follow up with them after the event unless you’re not planning on hosting the ride / event or seeing them ever again.

• Drop-off or send them a copy of any programs / signage from the ride that includes them.

• Drop-off or send them a personalized letter or plaque that recognizes them for their support. Wall plaques are GREAT – because it not only gives them something to mount on the wall and show off (giving them additional exposure) but it also promotes your event to potential riders and sponsors. “Hey, I’d like one of those on my wall!”

• Recognize them with a post on social media, tagging them if possible. Include photos of the event that include their business, their logo, or their people. Whenever possible, include a photo of the principles with you or at the event.

UPDATES: Congratulations to the 2024 OC Plungers!

RtR sponsored Polar Plunge Team raising funds for Special Olympics Michigan.

Last year the plunge team raised more than $13k – for 2024, they more than DOUBLED their donation – raising more than $26,000. In addition, the team achieved recognition as the #1 fundraising team in Oakland County, #1 Law Enforcement, and #2 in the ENTIRE STATE OF MICHIGAN. Congrationlations!

Reasons To Ride Michigan partnered with members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department – along with friends, family, and other community members. In particular we’d like to thank ERSKINE LAW for stepping up as a TEAM SPONSOR. Other RTR partners joined the effort – including Arsenal Harley-Davidson and The Shark Club. THANK YOU FOR JOINING US IN THE EFFORT!

Route 30 Harley-Davidsons

in Upper Sandusky, OH

introduced a new concept this year as an effort to support the local riding community. Their “WHY WE RIDE” program encouraged groups of riders to get out and ride in support of their own chosen charitable cause. Within a 24 hour period –groups tracked miles and donations raised. They had a fancy formula designed to encourage both donations and riders to join in support. At the end of the day, the group with the most “miles” got the entire pot for their designated cause. Really a cool idea!

For information on how you can join in or help sponsor an event, please email Info@ReasonsToRide.com

RtR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES

PRESENTED BY ERSKINE LAW

PUT HER IN THE SHOW – AND JOIN THE FAM!

After doing these shows for more than 12 years, it’s great seeing how many connections and friendships that have developed over the years between folks coming to the shows. There’s a common bond that exists among folks that customize or even create their own bikes. People start talking about what they’ve built, what they have at home, and what they rode up to the show. And this year – we are doing even more to help facilitate those discussions and really ensure that everyone has a great time at the show! Regardless of what you have – all makes, models, and years are welcome. Come on out and show off what you’ve done – and join the RTR BIKE SHOW FAMILY!

IT'S TIME FOR SANDUSKY!

The Midwest’s BIGGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT once again hosts an RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW on the WATER!

OHIO BIKE WEEK Downtown Sandusky, Saturday June 1st, 2024

Ohio Bike Week is the Midwest’s LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT and this Bike Show does it proud every year. Like last year, this show will be held on the Jackson Street Pier – a beautiful park-like setting right in the midst of the chaos. So bring a blanket for the grass and enjoy some amazing music from the main stage – 100 yards from the show! If you’ve made it out either of the past two years – you know how amazing the location is. We’re literally surrounded by water on 3 sides – in the midst of the WORLD FAMOUS BLOCK PARTY!

We have SPECIAL EDITION SHOW SHIRTS – for FREE, for the first 50 bikes to register in advance!

We are anticipating that feature bike space will be limited, so we are encouraging everyone to REGISTER as soon as possible for this show. We will be reserving space and assigned spots for bikes that have pre-registered online. As previously, registration will be discounted in advance AND you get a RTR Exhibitor Lanyard, Show Pin, and Bike Show Shirt – all free courtesy of our series sponsor Erskine Law! We will be accepting bikes the day of the show – but only as space allows and priority will be given to the preregistered ones. Make sure you check in on the Facebook event for more information and updates as they occur.

MAY 2024 REPORT

Exhibitor Lanyards and Pins

Select RTR Bike Shows will now feature special badges and lanyards for those exhibiting motorcycles at the show. This will make it easier for everyone to identify who the builders are and encourage discussion as folks look to hear more about the bikes. These lanyards will be provided free of any additional cost for those registering in advance for these shows, courtesy our sponsor – Erskine Law

We will also begin presenting “show pins” for those exhibiting motorcycles. Series and custom show pins will help recognize those that are “seasoned exhibitors” and the shows they have participated in. These collectible pins can be attached to jackets and vests; and will also be provided free of any additional cost for those registering in advance, courtesy Erskine Law

Expanded Sound Competitions

We will be incorporating informal sound competitions into more of the RtR Bike Shows this year. These will be “King of the Hill” style competitions with winners chosen based upon overall sound quality – not simply the decibels they can produce. While we will have several classes – the emphasis will be on creating a fun opportunity to showcase quality sound systems.

Legacy Bike Recognition

In an effort to showcase Best of Show motorcycles – and possibly give others a chance to win as well, we will now be inviting past winners to come and exhibit their bikes as prominent features of the shows they have won. We have special “extras” for Legacy Winners – and will work to get additional shots and features of these bikes from the shows to showcase within the magazines and online.

All makes, models, and years are truly welcome at the RTR Bike Shows. We have over 15 distinct classes for bikes, and we are constantly adding more as the shows evolve. We group bikes by style and origin, and try to balance things out as much as possible. Categories include designations for Imported and Domestic, Touring, Trikes, Vintage, Racing, and even Radical. Specialty classes include Custom Paint, Patriotic and Military themed bikes, and even a Ladies Class.

It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you. We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes –but about the people building and riding them as well.

Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, these shows are for you if you have a passion for your bike. Go ahead and bring her out – and PUT HER IN THE SHOW!

Bike of the Nights!

As always, the RtR crew will be out and about hitting various Bike Nights, Rides, and other events throughout the upcoming riding season. At select events, our team and our partners will be recognizing one or two bikes as “BIKE OF THE NIGHT” as part of the 2024 Championship Bike Show Series – presented by Erskine Law.

The owners of these motorcycles will receive a special trophy and invitation to participate in an upcoming bike show –sponsored by the magazine. We will also be featuring some of these bikes in the magazine and / or online.

At some locations, such as Arsenal Harley-Davidson, Artesian Wells, Fink’s, and Zeppe’s – we will be regularly presenting a BIKE OF THE NIGHT Trophy as part of their Bike Nights! Follow them or us on Facebook for more details!

If you’d like our crew to stop by your Bike Night or other event, just email us with details and contact information. Email us at Events@ReasonsToRide.com

Thunder Zone Vendor Areas

For the larger weekend shows, we often host THUNDER ZONE Vendor areas as part of our layout. These vendor areas offer a tremendous opportunity to reach not only thousands of riders – but far more, as many of the events embrace the entire community, drawing attendees from throughout their regions. Many of our shows are part of rallies and events with more than 10,000 in attendance, several more than 50k, and even a few 100k plus! And for all of our Tour Stops – we work with vendors to ensure a seamless, successful experience. However, at most – space is limited! So, email us ASAP to get on the list and reserve your spots!

For a complete schedule and more information on vending at these events, email Email for information - Info@ReasonsToRide.com

Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide

EVENT: OHIO BIKE WEEK 2024

May 24 – June 1, 2024 Sandusky Ohio www.OhioBikeWeek.com

Ohio Bike Week is the “Largest Motorcycle Event in the Midwest” and one of the largest in the nation! It draws riders from across the Midwest and nation to the shores of Lake Erie. It started as a State HOG Rally more than 15 years ago. It has since evolved into a call for riders to come and celebrate the start of riding season on Ohio’s North Coast. The ten days of rides and activities culminate with the “World Famous Block Party” the 2nd weekend on the streets of downtown Sandusky.

This will be the third year that the Block Party has centered around the Jackson Street and Barrel House piers – right on the water. Jackson Street offers a broad park-like setting surrounding the big national stage on the water. You couldn’t ask for a more chill place to enjoy a concert with thousands of brothers and sisters. Then there’s the Barrel House Pier – which is Party Central and the place to go for great music and to meet up with folks at one of the coolest “Biker Bars” in the country in the midst of the Rally.

Ohio Bike Week has also been built around a rather unique concept – just throw a giant party, with good music, but make all the shows FREE. There are VIP areas, but you can see all the bands – including the national acts – without spending a dime. The organizers are hoping, though, that if you’re having a great time –you’ll support the vendors and maybe pick up a shirt or two along the way.

Last year’s Rally was one of the best ever – with RECORD BREAKING numbers on the first weekend and a rocking Block Party on the water the second!

Over the years, Ohio Bike Week has constantly evolved as rally organizers have sought to further develop their concept and bring even more riders together each year. And it’s really the riders that make this rally. Certainly there are a lot of really cool places to go and things to see along the “Vacationland” stretch of Lake Erie, but it’s the folks that really separate this from other rallies for us.

Ohio Bike Week is once again offering a VIP All-Access Pass which allows you to get upfront and personal with the performers. A limited number of these are available for purchase through OhioBikeWeek.com These always include a lot of bang for the buck – and are a great way to show your support for the Rally. This year they are offering a limited number of discounted VIP Block Party Passes for $99 which includes access to the VIP areas as well as a limited edition Rally T-Shirt.

Ohio Bike Week features an Official Ride each day, and these rides have become as much a tradition as the Rally itself. The Wednesday Kelley’s Island Dice Run and the Jesse James Dupree Charity Ride (Thursday) are two of the long standing favorites. And of course the George Roeder Memorial Parade on the second Saturday is a sight to behold. You can find out more information on each of the rides at OhioBikeWeek.com

Saturday, May 25th – The Original Margaritaville, Sandusky

This year’s Tattoo Party is moving out to The Original Margaritaville –one of the most popular ride stops in the state. Ohio Bike Week has expanded their programming to include this location and will have vendors and events happening out on the deck and surrounding lot throughout the week.

The Iron & Ink party for those with ink (canvas) and those that create it (the artists) – as well as those with an appreciation for! It’s a fun celebration of the art, as we introduce folks and share a little about the stories behind pieces in some cases. A mix of prizes and recognition for those participating and their artists – including trophies and placards. There’s also a great chance that you might see your artwork featured in the magazine. Register in advance at ReasonsToRide.com – and receive a FREE T-shirt! Bonus prizes for shops participating, and there are great opportunities for shops to showcase their artists and art as part of the show. For more information email Info@ReasonsToRide.com

OHIO BIKE WEEK SOUND COMPETITION

Saturday, May 25th – Margaritaville, Sandusky

Last year’s Official OBW Sound Competition was a great time – as were the “informal” King of the Hill challenges held as part of the Bike Show down on the pier. In the spirit of these, RTR will be hosting informal sound challenges throughout the week at Margaritaville. We will be posting sign-ups and more information on our Facebook leading up to the Rally. These will be primarily informal crowd judged rounds, with cash prizes. Emphasis will be on clarity and the crowd response to the tunes being played – not just decibels. We want to encourage everyone to come out and have fun with the competition. Even if you’ve never done a sound challenge before –give it a shot!

RTR FEATURED EVENT: OHIO BIKE WEEK 2024

May 24 – June 1, 2024 Sandusky Ohio

Kelley’s Island Dice Run

Wednesday, May 29th – Peeper’s on Kelly’s Island

One of the most popular Ohio Bike Week rides has always been the Kelly’s Island Dice Run that’s held in the middle of the week. This year, they are encouraging everyone to just head over to the island, via the Kelley’s Island Ferry (510 W. Main St.,Lakeside Marblehead)

Get there early to avoid the massive line at the Ferry in years past. Registration starts at 10am on the Island at Peeper’s (109 W. Lakeshore Dr, Kelley’s Island)

OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW

Saturday, June 1st – Jackson Street Pier, Downtown Sandusky

Reasons To Ride will once again be hosting the Official OBW Bike Show downtown on the water, with registration and bikes exhibited on the Jackson Street Pier during the Block Party. This is an informal, ride-in bike show like no other – with Cash and Prizes, including trophies and placards for winners across more than a dozen possible classes. All makes and models are welcome, and winners will be chosen through a system of public voting with weighted judges’ ballots. It’s a relatively casual approach that lends itself to a day of fun and camaraderie amongst folks with a love for two wheeled (and three) wheeled iron.

We would strongly encourage everyone to register in advance for this show. Not only will you save a few dollars and get a free show t-shirt, you’ll also have a spot reserved for you on the pier. Space will be a premium and priority will certainly be given to those registering in advance. You can register and find out more on this at ReasonsToRide.com or on the Ohio Bike Week Bike Show Facebook event. (www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide)

RTR FEATURED EVENT: OHIO BIKE WEEK 2024

May 24 – June 1, 2024 Sandusky Ohio www.OhioBikeWeek.com

Key Stops -

JACK DANIEL’S BARREL HOUSE SALOON

Certainly, our favorite place to escape to during the Block Party is the back outside deck at the JD Barrel House. (Just don’t tell anyone… we want to keep it a secret!) No matter what’s going on a few feet behind you in the Saloon – looking out over the water is amazingly relaxing. Then when you’re ready – turn around and step back into the chaos at the undisputed PARTY HQ of OBW!

The Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon is at the end of the Barrel House Pier – which during Bike Week is stocked full of vendors, motorcycles, an occasional stage and bar or two. But as you make your way back, it’s clear you’re making your way “through court” to reach the KING of BIKE WEEK BARS. This is always where the party is – and this year, the entertainment is second to NONE!

RALLY TIP: Many of the HARD-CORE Party Bands are scheduled at the Barrel House, and you’ll want to visit their Facebook page for the final schedule and any updates (that will surely happen). This is always the closing stage in terms of end of the night performances and is the go-to place in times of inclement weather.

MAD RIVER H-D

Mad River Harley-Davidson is the presenting sponsor of Ohio Bike Week and plays host to Rally HQ for the week. For most folks, this is the landing spot for when they arrive in Sandusky. You can pick

up your VIP and Concert tickets within the dealership, and the lot is filled with vendors and hundreds of bikes for sale! Last year, they added the Mad River Saloon – which was an undisputed hit with live music and fun throughout the entire week!

The other big attraction at Mad River H-D is the Harley-Davidson Factory Demo Trucks. You can stop by and test ride all the new Harley’s – including the new ROAD GLIDE, Pan America, the Sportster S, and even ALL THE CVO’s! You’ll want to visit the Ohio Bike Week Facebook page or website to confirm the schedule for the demo rides. They are traditionally not there the last Sunday and will close down if the weather is considered adverse.

Special Thanks to David Eggert, Jennifer Gore, and Dan Hare for Bike Week photographs.

Sport Touring Corner

Sport Touring and Chain Drive Bikes

When I started riding in the mid 1960s, chains were a constant hassle. O ring chains did not exist and had much less strength than today. In the early 70s when much more powerful bikes like the 750 Honda and Kawasaki Z1 came out, chains wore out quickly and frequently broke. I responded to this by riding a 1962 BMW with shaft drive, switching to a 750 Guzzi in 1970. Since then I have been riding shaft drive road bikes exclusively until I bought a Suzuki 650 V Strom XT in 2020.

Fortunately chains have improved a lot in the past 50 years. O rings keep grease in the bushings and riveted master links keep them from coming apart. Improved materials have reduced wear rates and increased strength.

Since the grease is sealed in, why is it still necessary to lubricate them? First and foremost, the O rings need to stay moist so they don't harden and crack.

Second, lubrication reduces wear of sprocket teeth. Chains that haven't worn/stretched combined with sprockets in good shape will keep working for a long time, but as soon as chain pins and bushings start to wear, the chain links get slightly longer. That causes them to form a larger circle when they go around the sprocket, so they ride higher up on the teeth. The chain no longer fits the sprocket, so there is more friction and wear of all the parts. You want to avoid that as long as possible.

I love the V Strom and ride it about 12k miles per year. I installed an inexpensive oiler that's easy to find on Amazon and Ebay, typical cost $25. It has a reservoir with a knob on top of it. Just turn it about

1/4 turn and several drops of oil drip on the chain from a tube. I do this about every 40-50 miles while riding at medium speed. I fill the reservoir with Scott chain oil which is very sticky. One filling is enough for 1200-1500 miles. Over time oil is thrown off and that helps keep the chain fairly clean. A small amount of oil gets on the rear wheel rim over

time which doesn't bother me. If you want to avoid that, https://www. snoto.de/ has a CleandisC accessory avail for most bikes for around $50 DL-650.jpg

Lubrication is not the only thing you need to pay attention to. In spite of good lubrication, my V Strom chain started stretching and kinking and had to be replaced. The previous owner had run the chain much too tight, putting it under constant tension while riding.

30 YOUR MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM

Too much tension causes grease to be squeezed out of the parts of the bushings that are under constant tension, resulting in metal to metal contact, friction and heat that overheats the grease and causes the chain to fail.

When the chain is run with adequate slack, the pins and bushings are loose during the bottom run between the countershaft and rear sprockets, it allows the grease to redistribute all the way around them. With correct slack and regular lubrication, my replacement chain was still in great shape with about 30k miles on it when the bike got totaled when I was rear-ended in a crash in early February. At that point it had only been adjusted slightly each time the rear tire was replaced, around three turns total on the adjuster. It would have easily lasted another 10-20k miles. As this is being written in mid April, the V Strom has been replaced with a newer model and I have recovered from my injuries and ridden almost 2k miles.

It's going to be a great season and MSTA rallies start in a couple weeks. Coming right up:

A Ride Through History On The Covered Wooden Bridges of Kentucky

Did you know that Kentucky is home to some of the most beautiful Covered Wooden Bridges in the U.S? Kentucky's covered bridges are scattered throughout the state, each offering a glimpse into the region's rich history and craftsmanship. As a matter of fact, there are not many areas in the U.S. that have more of these incredible surviving bridges than the Appalachian Farmlands of Northeast Kentucky. These architectural marvels stand as silent witnesses to Kentucky's rich history and rural charm, captivating visitors with their rustic beauty and timeless appeal.

In this article we will focus on our trail routes in our Free GPS-Enabled Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application that showcase these astounding National Historic Landmarks. Keep in mind that several of these bridges can not only be visited but can be ridden across! 100s of years of history right under your bike tires on the same bridge that once carried people on horseback and in wagons before the Automobile or Motorcycle was even invented! This is a two up or solo rider's dream come true as these routes offer something for everyone from amazing scenery, to the historic bridges, the historic towns, and all the State Parks in the area we didn't have the space to cover in this article. No need to worry as they are all in our Mobile Application and just one click away combined with many other “Uniquely Appalachian” Points of Interest for you to explore! Now let’s put the rubber to the wood and get started!

Kentucky Covered Wooden Bridges Trail - Maysville, Kentucky is situated along the banks of the Ohio River and boasts a collection of wooden covered bridges that harken back to a bygone era. Each bridge tells a story of craftsmanship, resilience, and community spirit, offering a glimpse into Kentucky's past. One of the most iconic bridges in Maysville is the Old Washington Covered Bridge. Built in 1861, this historic landmark spans the East Fork of the Licking River, connecting the town of Washington with the surrounding countryside. With its weathered wooden planks and quaint red exterior, the Old Washington Covered Bridge exudes a sense of nostalgia, beckoning visitors to step back in time and experience the simple pleasures of rural life.

In addition to the Old Washington and Manchester bridges, Maysville is home to several other wooden covered bridges, each with its own unique story and significance. From the quaint charm of the Cabin Creek Covered Bridge to the historic allure of the Germantown Covered Bridge, these bridges stand as testaments to Kentucky's rural heritage and architectural ingenuity.

For visitors looking to explore Maysville's wooden covered bridges, there are plenty of opportunities for scenic drives, leisurely walks, and photo ops. Many of the bridges are located within easy driving distance of downtown Maysville, allowing visitors to embark on a self-guided tour of these historic landmarks. This ride covers the bridges of both Mason County and Fleming County to the South. This is one ride you will want to do again with your friends or in group!

Raiders Run Trail - Grayson, Kentucky is nestled in the rolling hills of northeastern Kentucky right off of exit 172 on I-64. This town's rich history dates back to the early 19th century when it was founded in 1820 and named after Col. William Grayson, a prominent surveyor in the area.

Another gem in Maysville's collection is the Manchester Bridge, a charming wooden covered bridge that dates back to the mid-19th century. Originally constructed in 1831, this bridge has undergone several renovations over the years but still retains its rustic charm and historic character. Spanning the waters of Limestone Creek, the Manchester Bridge offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

The Little Sandy River flows near Grayson, and several bridges have been constructed to facilitate travel across it over the years. The Bennett's Mill Covered Bridge is situated near the community of Olive Hill in Carter County, Kentucky. The bridge was constructed in 1875, spanning Tygarts Creek. It was built using the Howe truss design, a popular bridge-building technique during the 19th century. The Bennett's Mill Covered Bridge is approximately 91 feet long. Like many other covered bridges in Kentucky, the Bennett's Mill Bridge played a crucial role in facilitating transportation and commerce in the region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Covered bridges were common during this time as they provided protection to the wooden structure from the elements, thus extending their lifespan. The Oldtown Covered Bridge is situated near the community of Oldtown in Carter County, Kentucky. The bridge was built in 1871, spanning the Little Sandy River. It is constructed using the Burr arch truss design, a common design for covered bridges during the 19th century. The Oldtown Covered Bridge is approximately 144 feet long.

Preserving a Legacy: Over the years, many efforts have been made to preserve and maintain these bridges for future generations to experience and enjoy. Here at Backroads and the WCMG we are doing our part to raise awareness and assist in raising funds for these efforts by showcasing these National Landmarks and their history in our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application. You can be a part of this initiative by visiting these bridges today or by attending our upcoming WCMG “Hollers and Bridges” Weekend Ride later this season! Donate directly by contacting the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges on their website at CoveredBridgeSociety.org.

Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful ride and escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life, Kentucky’s historic bridges offer a glimpse into Kentucky's storied past and a reminder of the simple joys that await those who venture off the beaten path.

Let’s Save Kentucky’s Wooden Covered Bridges Appalachia! We are ready to ride, are you?

Bacon, Beer, and Cheese Sloppy Joes

INGREDIENTS

• 6 slices bacon, diced

• 1 lb ground beef

• 1 small onion, diced

• 2 cloves garlic, minced

• 1/2 cup beer (your choice of type)

• 1/2 cup ketchup

• 2 tablespoons tomato paste

• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

• 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

• Salt and pepper to taste

• 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

• Hamburger buns, for serving

DIRECTIONS :

• In a large skillet, cook the diced bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the cooked bacon from the skillet and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.

• In the same skillet with the bacon grease, add the ground beef, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook, breaking up the beef with a spoon, until the beef is browned and the onions are softened.

• Drain off any excess grease from the skillet.

• Return the cooked bacon to the skillet with the beef mixture.

• Stir in the beer, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

• Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded.

• Once the sauce is thickened, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the beef mixture. Cover the skillet and let it cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

• Stir the cheese into the beef mixture until well combined.

• Serve the bacon, beer, and cheese sloppy joe mixture on hamburger buns.
