FROM THE PUBLISHER It’s the Holiday Seasons – and regardless of what faith you practice or even if you don’t partake in any of that – it’s a time of celebration, fellowship, and cheer. It’s the time of year when goodwill and brotherhood are celebrated more than any other time. There are many myths out there about the riding / biker community. One of the biggest is that “bikers” wear black t-shirts to look “tough”. Nope – that’s not it; but if that’s the impression you get… it might be more the person in the shirt than the color of their undershirt. The reality is that black t-shirts are worn by bikers because they hide the grime, bugs, oil, and other wear and tear of the road better than other colors – and most certainly white. You can wrench all day on your bike, maybe getting some oil and grease on it; and then ride hard to your gal’s place – maybe picking up a few bugs along the way – and then jump off and your black t-shirt doesn’t really look any worse for wear. An even bigger myth, though, is that bikers are all cold-hearted, nasty folks that civilians need to run in fear from. Far too many folks – including many riders – believe that this is what really defines being a biker. That you can grab a black t-shirt, throw a cap on that says “F-Off”, jump on your black Street Glide and ride off while giving a finger to the neighbors – and you’re a biker. Nope – doesn’t work that way. At least that’s not what makes us a community and defines who we are. Sure, some folks play that – including plenty of “real bikers”… but mostly its in jest or that we really don’t like our neighbors or the look they give us when we ride off on the bike. The reality is that being a biker is all about BROTHERHOOD. The idea that “I’ve got 30 brothers that my mother never had” – to quote a club member. But it goes beyond the club concept, it’s the idea that anyone we meet out on the road – fellow riders – and are pretty much “brothers and sisters” that we just haven’t met. And this sense of camaraderie and connection is reinforced by the fact that on two wheels – we are all a little more vulnerable. And maybe we need each other a little more than we might think if we are traveling around in our little metal boxes – separated from the world. This translates to the riding community being one of the most charitable segments of our entire population. We help EVERYONE! We ride for just about every cause imaginable, and for some bikers the concept of helping others is an overwhelming PASSION that drives them. We do this year-round, but during the holidays most of us in the Midwest aren’t riding – and we are still the charitable beasts, with or without the iron. Toy runs, food drives, campaigns for the homeless are being held throughout the area – with bikers reaching out into the community helping those in need. THIS is what defines being a biker and our riding community. Brotherhood – not just amongst those we know but extended throughout the community with our bond established by the kindred spirit that we all share. So why all the “F-You” shirts and grimacing, angry biker antics? It’s a push back to all the folks that type-cast us that way. For some clubs and hardcore riders it’s a push back and type of rebellion against the establishment that many excluded from. It’s a reaction to the treatment many riders feel, but they will stop and cough up their quarters for a glass. Not just because they are thirsty, but because they love kids and appreciate the spirit they show. During the holidays – we get off the bikes and head out into the community. We great others with a cheerful smile and show everyone who we really are – beyond the roar of our rides. Merry Christmas to you and your families. I hope that it’s a joyous one for you!

Sincerely, Publisher Reasons To Ride 4

IT’S A TEAM THING.

RtR Offers Promotional Partnerships to Regional Riding Organizations and Charitable Groups For over 20 years, the RtR team has worked to support various regional charitable organizations and riding groups. As magazine publishers and regional promoters, we’ve made it a central part of our mission to support grass roots organizations and the events they hold. During this time, we’ve helped promote hundreds of events and donated thousands in ad space and promotional support. It’s what we do – to not only support the efforts of these organizations but to also help establish ourselves as active, positive members of the community. For 2024, one of our primary goals will be to develop regional partnerships with charitable organizations to both help support these groups and the work they do – as well as help promote the magazines and RTR partners within their region. The belief is that by working together, we can increase the impact and reach of both our messages. Working with other regional partners and sponsors, there will also be opportunities for partner organizations to raise funds to support their organizations or their designated charities. Again, it’s a great opportunity for RtR to team up with established organizations to share revenues and ensure that everyone benefits from the partnership.

Once again, Reasons To Ride: Michigan is teaming up with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office to help promote the OC Plungers and raise funds for Special Olympics Michigan Athletes We are also offering special consideration and extra ad space, etc.. for local businesses joining us in this effort to make a difference in some really amazing athletes! We also have new CHALLENGE COINS for sponsors and once again - 100% of all donations go to support the team and Special Olympics Michigan For information on how you can join in - or help sponsor the team - email us at Info@ReasonsToRide. com

Holiday Gift Ideas The Holiday Season is a time of sharing and the giving of gifts between friends and family. If you have riders on your list, we would like to offer some suggestions for unique and practical gifts that any rider might appreciate. The following pages are a mix of items and services offered by Thunder Roads Ohio and some of our partners. Some of our suggestions are practical items that a rider might not consider or just over look. An AMA or ABATE Membership, for instance, is something that any biker or enthusiast will appreciate but might not get themselves. Helmets, good gloves, or protective riding boots are other items that riders can always use – but often neglect for themselves. It’s also worth mentioning that you might consider getting a little something for your “Iron Steed” as well. People think nothing of getting gifts for dogs and cats – so why not for your bike? And as luck would have it, we might have a few suggestions for stuff your bike would love as well!

Don’t forget your bike this holiday season!

Shokz OpenRun PRO If you or someone you know spends a lot of time on their phone, these might be a complete game changer for them. These open-air Bluetooth devices allow you to use for phone for music, mapping directions, and of course calls through “bone conduction technology” leaving your ears uncovered. This allows you to remain alert to sounds and more safely operate your vehicle – while still being able to easily hear whatever is being played through the headphones. For calls, the noise cancellation seems to work really well – and for those extra concerned about it, there’s even a model with a boom mic that you barely notice while wearing. Available through Amazon and other retailers. Shokz.com

Abel Brown – Gear designed by journeymen for the road.

We first heard about Abel Brown tents from an Australian biker who clued us in as to this small Colorado based company that simply has a passion for making really high quality gear that works. It’s designed for folks that want to get out on the road – with as little stuff as possible, but still enjoy some comforts along the way. “Abel Brown’s mission is to provide those who want to take on journeys of the unknown with products that encourage this lifestyle.” So we got one of their Nomad tents – tents designed to use your bike for anchor points, eliminating the need for poles. And yeah, it really works. It’s a cool, well thought out tent that just works. But the thing about Abel Brown is that their products aren’t mass produced – they’re produced by craftsmen using the finest quality materials. So, they are often out of stock on the cool stuff – so get it while you can. We’ve wanted one of their camp blankets for a while, and low and behold – they are in stock as we write this. The other cool thing is that they improve their products over time. They don’t offer ten different tents – but their basic Nomad tent has evolved over time as they’ve used it and they’ve gotten feedback over time. We got one of their early Nomad tents – and they are now on their 4th generation, and the improvements they’ve made sound great. They’ve also developed accessories, like poles, that allow even more versatility to their stuff. If you’re looking for a cool, high quality gift for a rider in your life – or even yourself, check out their website. Chances are you’ll find something to catch your eye. It’s not “cheap” but it’s not absurd. You’re paying for wellmade stuff that’s going to last - not just a label. AbelBrown.com

Quality Boots

Mimi and Moto Children’s Books

Far too often we scrimp on the little things that can really make a difference in our lives. And there’s probably no better example of that than when it comes to footwear – especially in terms of riding boots.

Mimi and Moto are the “Motorcycle Monkeys” and featured in two high quality, hard cover children’s books aimed at riders looking to share their passion for motorcycles with children. These are bright bold books that introduce children to the world of riding and real terms found in the motorcycle world. Nancy and Mark, of Little Rider Enterprises, are the creator of Mimi and Moto – and they shared “Our mission is to have the characters of Mimi and Moto introduce motorcycling to children and their families as a cool, adventurous and fun way of life.” “Mimi and Moto teach children that motorcycles are fun, safety always comes first, girls and boys ride, and there are many different kinds of motorcycles. “ Our youngest RTR Team members really enjoyed the books and their bright bold images. They loved the idea of learning more about motorcycles – just like “Dad”. We met Nancy and Mark at the 2019 AIMExpo where they won the MIC Gas Tank award for innovative and new ideas within the motorcycle industry. They are great people with a passion for kids and riding – and we hope that they continue to introduce more Mimi and Moto books! You can find the books on Amazon or through links on our webpage as well.

Proper, comfortable riding boots can make all the difference after a long day of riding, working, or simply walking. Far too often, though, we scrimp on boots refusing to spend a few more dollars for a step up in quality that might transform our entire day. For something classy – nothing jazzes up an outfit like a nice pair of exotic boots. For ladies or men, stylish cowboy boots can transform your t-shirt and jeans outfit into the stuff of rockstars. When it comes to boots – there’s one stop that immediately comes to mind and that’s the Avon Boot Shop. Avon Boot is one of the coolest stops I know when it comes to finding cool practical stuff for riders. From quality leathers to an endless array of boots Avon Boot is a great place to shop. For the guys, not only do they have boots - they just happen to have a nice selection of very stylish purses and other lady stuff for that special gift. You can get something all pretty and lady like, without having to go into one of those shops that will leave you smelling like something dainty by the time you walk out the door. Plus, they have a GREAT staff that is extremely helpful – always a HUGE BONUS! Avon Boot Shop 38450 Chester Rd. Avon, OH 44011 (440) 934-3230

Holiday Gift Ideas Range Membership / Classes

Purchasing a gun is only one step in a long process leading to proficiency and confidence with that firearm. This process should include plenty of training and practice – and that means time spent at a range, preferably with someone that really knows what they are doing. Far too many people just head off to the range with their gun – either by themselves or with another person that is either unexperienced or may have never received structured training. This leads to bad habits, bad experiences, or at worst – bad accident. A range membership or certificate for professional instruction make a great gift for just about any adult. Most quality ranges will offer professional instruction either privately with certified instructors or in group classes. If you’re fortunate enough to be in their area, we strongly recommend Vandalia Range and Armory just north of Dayton, or First Strike which is in Newbury, Ohio They both are well run facilities that offers well lite, comfortable ranges and a variety of membership packages. They also offer a wide range of classes and instruction, suited for novices to the trained professional. We’d recommend visiting their website or calling for more information.

Holiday Gift Ideas Phone Handlebar Mounts

A good mount will keep the phone accessible and in sight, for when you’re using GPS. EDITORS TIP: DON’T get the ones with the rubber bands. They aren’t as convenient to use and the straps will dry-out and break over time – especially when left sitting out in the sun. You don’t want them to break while you’re riding down the freeway… and then your iphone goes flying.

Portable Battery Pack A small portable battery pack will not only save your trip from a dead battery, but can also charge USB devices as well. Recommendation: For Cell Phone / Electronics – pocket unit with cords already attacked. Saves you scrambling for the right one when you really need it. Portable Vehicle “Jump Starter” – super convenient, but keep it charged. Compact units can be used for phones, etc.. and then have cable attachments to jump start your bike, car, etc..

Battery Tender

Rain Gear

This is one of those things that every rider NEEDS but most forget about – and then regret when spring comes and their battery is dead. It’s also a gift that might get put to use as soon as its unwrapped. These days every bike needs to be on a tender when left sitting for any extended period of time.

A thoughtful gift that will be appreciated when they’re caught out in the rain. Recommendation: Nelson Rigg Stormrider Suit A quality suit made by a reputable, established name within the industry that offers 100% waterproof protection along with high visibility colors and reflective accents. It’s not worth saving just a few dollars, to get something that’s not going to last more than one or two uses. These suits are reasonably priced – and will last a lot longer than the cheaper imitations.

Portable Compressor You never know when you’ll need one and these days – you just can’t depend on gas stations to even have air while on the road.

Recommendation: Slime Power Sport Inflator This powerful little inflator is perfect for your motorcycle, ATV, SxS, or small car. It’s approx. 6”x6” so it can fit in your saddlebag without taking up too much space – until you need it. Available on Amazon.

Motorcycle Luggage Nothing quite says “take me on a long motorcycle ride” like luggage for the bike, or maybe you just want more space to store your own stuff while riding. Thankfully, there are a lot of great options when it comes to bags and storage stuff for traveling on two wheels. EDITORS RECOMMENDATION: For a big case, with LOTS of options, we really like the RHINOWALK 60L Tail Bag. This is a rugged piece of luggage that has a ton of options – and is really easy to expand. It also has a lot of convenient access points so you can get to your stuff without unpacking everything. It’s also designed with numerous connection spots and places to run straps to easily secure it to just about any bike without any mounting hardware. Just unroll the straps and run them under your seat, rear rack, rear fender, or wherever. And we found it to be VERY reasonably priced on Amazon.

Motorcycle Helmet Lock

Cold Weather Face Mask

It’s easy to have a lot invested in that helmet, which is usually a lot more conveniently left with the bike and not taken in with you at stops. So – a helmet lock is one of those things that you may not think about but would certainly appreciate as a gift.

Double duty for protecting from the snow and wind all winter – and then providing comfort when caught out late on the bike during the Spring and Fall when the temperatures drop.

Editors Recommendation: Some devices will also help secure your bike by locking down the brake as well as your helmet. Others offer long enough cable to also connect to a pole or something more “secure” than the bike itself.

The Honda NAVI

Honda owns the “miniMOTO” segment – with their lineup of cult favorites, including the GROM, MONKEY, Super Cub, rugged Trail 125 – and our own personal favorite scooter THE RUCKUS! But now along comes the Honda Navi. The bike has taken the world by storm as easily their most affordable and user-friendly bike in the segment.

HondaMotorsports.net

This unique bike blends the ease of a “twist-and-go” scooter with the styling of a step-over motorcycle. It has a fan-cooled, 109cc engine found in scooters – but is styled more like its big brother GROM. It also has an automatic CVT transmission that shifts into neutral at stops. It also features dual drum brakes that will harness the 7.8 horsepower of the mini-motorcycle – which will get most riders up to 50mph, albeit not too quickly. This is a fun, basic bike that’s great for around town, new riders, or students looking for something to get them around larger campuses or urban areas. And did we mention – MSRP of $1,807? Yup – that’s for a true HONDA!

The Piranha P125-E

Piranha builds rugged “off-road, competition” bikes, which have pretty much come to define what it means to be a PIT BIKE! These are solid bikes produced by well established folks within the industry – and offered at a reasonable price. While often grouped in with the “Chinese bikes” – these are almost always rated well and have overwhelmingly positive reviews. Folks in the know recommend these bikes, especially with their price point and value offered. It’s also easy to get parts and accessories for the bikes, especially from our friends over at IRON PONY. It's a rugged, well built dirt bike with an electric start – that you can get NEW for less than $2k! For the trails or “pit racing” this is a solid choice!

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

Recommended Gear and Accessories for Long Distance Riders Someone recently asked for recommendations on long distance riding gear and accessories. That could cover a wide variety of things so let's limit ourselves to several popular categories. Regular readers of my column will see some familiar choices. GPS Navigation System – Long distance riding takes riders to unfamiliar locales, and a reliable GPS navigation system will help navigate through them and stay on track during long journeys. Most will opt for a dedicated GPS, and the obvious choice is the Garmin zumo XT or the new XT2 that has an even larger screen and better connectivity to phones, the internet and other devices. Available everywhere- usually can be found on sale for $400-600 What about using a phone as a GPS? That's becoming a more popular option. Most want to use the phone they already have but you still need a an app and a mount. This past year I thoroughly researched GPS phone apps and settled on OsmAnd. Works great with a wide variety of GPX files, free to download and install up to 7 states of maps. ($10/year subscription for unlimited maps, $30 lifetime subscription) Download from your phone's store. Full info at osmand.net For mounting on the bike, QuadLock is the way to go- it's quick and secure, plus you can easily get the extra things you will need to make it work reliably and safely on the bike. Start by picking the case and type of mount you need for your particular phone. To protect your phone from vibration, get the vibration dampener. Finally, to use your phone as a GPS, it will need external power as the screen is on at full brightness all the time and that sucks life out of the battery. The optional wireless charging head is the easy way to go for an extra $52, bringing the total to about $125 Full info at quadlockcase.com Comfortable Riding Gear – Invest in high-quality, comfortable riding gear for long-distance trips. This includes a well-padded and ventilated helmet, comfortable riding boots, protective jacket, and gloves. Long distance riding often involves wide variations in weather and limited storage for extra gear so the best choices are four-season jackets and pants. I recommend rugged textile fabrics with top line armor, non mesh designs with lots of vents and Gore-tex so your regular riding gear works as rain gear as well. Then you don't have to carry extra stuff or change clothing when it rains. I don't recommend mesh- if it's hot I just run a smaller windshield nearly all year round. The Klim Badlands Pro jacket sets the standard. Pants are less critical- you don't need mesh with them and my pants don't even have vents. Just make sure they are waterproof and have good armor. Maximize your comfort with a quality base layer. LD comfort long sleeve shirt and full length tights are made with a two layer stretch fabric. The inner layer cannot hold moisture so it wicks it away from your skin to the outer layer where it evaporates and helps keep you cool. This is one of the keys to staying comfortable in hot weather. ldcomfort.com 22

Get a top line full face helmet- you'll be wearing it a lot so it needs to be comfortable and quiet. Helmets like the Shoei GT Air II have a built-in flip up sun shield- that's one more thing I don't have to carry separately. Boots are a more personal taste, but I prefer Sidi Performer Gore-tex boots. About 12" tall, waterproof, with thinner, more flexible soles. I like mine a couple sizes larger so I can wear heated and heavy socks in cold weather. Speaking of heated clothing, I recommend Warm N Safe heated jacket, pants, foot liners and controller. They take little space and keep you comfy over a wide range of temperature. Luggage System – Many sport touring and ADV bikes come with quality factory luggage. If you need luggage, choose a durable and waterproof luggage system that includes saddlebags, tank bags, and tail bags to carry all your essentials and keep them safe and dry. Communication System – If you ride alone and just need a headset for music, your phone or GPS, there are many inexpensive units to choose from. If you want to have intercom to allow you to stay connected with your riding partner or group, There are only two choicesCardo and Sena. How to choose? Get the same brand your travel companions use. Regardless, get everyone in your group to get a mesh model, which makes group communication simple and reliable. To be sure, there are lots of options, but we are very fortunate to live at a time when there are so many good ones to choose from. Enjoy your shopping and planning for next year. 2024 is going to be an awesome year to ride motorcycles! Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts: Southwest Ohio Breakfast, 9AM, December 16 Village Family Restaurant 144 S. Backroads of Appalachia! - Reasons to Ride Partner The Country Music Highway

If I told you there is one Highway in the United States that has produced more Famous Country Music and Bluegrass Artists than any other place on the planet would you be curious about where that might be located? Would you think it was most likely in or around Nashville? Well if you do think that then you would be wrong because this famous rural route is in fact right here in the Heart of Central Appalachia!! No other place on the globe has had more of an influence on Country Music or created more legendary stars than U.S. Route 23 in Eastern Kentucky also known as “Country Music Highway 23." Now officially recognized as a National Scenic Byway, This 144 mile stretch of highway runs north and south along the eastern part of the state of Kentucky and takes you through seven counties in Eastern Kentucky right along the border of West Virginia. The musical talent that has come from these Kentucky Hills and Hollers includes Loretta Lynn, Wynonna & Naomi Judd, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tom T. Hall, Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Dwight Yoakam, Gary Stewart, Patty Loveless, Crystal Gayle, Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, and the list goes on. Riders visiting this area will quickly realize that this entire region is steeped in cultural and musical history and has many great places to visit and experience along the way from our Country Music Lineage to our Coal Mining History. From Boyd County and the home of the historic Paramount Arts Center in Ashland, Kentucky which launched the careers of Billy Ray Cyrus and The Judds to Johnson County Kentucky and the

birthplace of the Queen of Country Music herself-Butcher Holler and of course the “Must See” Country Music Highway 23 Museum”. Taking this ride will also take you to many other great places to visit and see such as the City of Pikeville, Ky also dubbed the “8th Wonder of the World” were they moved an entire mountain during Pikeville-Cut-Through Project making it one of the biggest civil engineering projects in History. Just a few short miles from Pikeville you can experience the history of Kentucky and West Virginia’s most famous families, the Hatfields and Mccoys and learn all about their famous feud. Did we forget to mention Jenny Wiley State Resort Park? One of several beautiful state parks along this route. With so many things to check out in just 144 miles it would be hard to beat the experience you will have on this one of a kind journey through the mountains of Appalachia and we have just barely touched the surface. This is truly one ride you want to experience first hand! Find it today and all the great things to see and do along the way by using our free GPS-Enabled Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application and take a ride to remember on Country Music Gateway 23!

RECIPES

Chipotle Rub Roasted Chicken Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 1 whole roasting chicken (or the equivalent in cut parts) 3 tbsp ground chipotle pepper (or 2-3 ground dried chipotle peppers) 1/2 teaspoon paprika

Herbed Turkey Breast (Double recipe for a whole turkey) 1 whole bone-in turkey Breast 1 tbsp minced garlic

1 tsp onion powder

2 tsp dry mustard

1 tsp garlic powder

1 tbsp rosemary, minced

1 tsp ground coriander

1 tbsp sage, minced

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp thyme, minced

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1 tsp black pepper

3-4 tsp olive oil

2 tbsp olive oil

Preheat oven to 350

2 tbsp lemon juice

Wash and dry the chicken then rub it all over with oil

1 cup dry white wine

Mix together remaining ingredients in a small bowl to create a dry rub

½ cup chicken stock

Sprinkle dry rub liberally all over the outside, all over the inside of the cavity, and under the skin any where you can

Place on a rack in a roasting pan with a lid (or use foil), cover and place into the oven

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

In a small bowl, mix the garlic, mustard, herbs, salt, pepper, olive oil, and lemon juice into a paste.

Roast for 45 minutes, remove cover or foil, and continue roasting for another 30-45 minutes until you have an internal temperature of 165 at the breast and 175 at the thigh

Gently pull the skin lose from the meat gently and smear half of the paste directly on the meat, under the skin

Spread the rest on the outside of the skin.

Remove from oven, tent with foil and allow it to sit 10 minutes before carving.

Pour the wine and stock into the bottom of the roasting pan.

Place the turkey breast, skin side up, on a rack in a roasting pan and lightly tent with aluminum foil

Roast the turkey, 20 minutes per pound. Remove foil about half way through then continue cooking until the skin is golden brown and has reached an internal temp of 170 (but I always take it out at 165 because it will continue cooking for a while out of the oven)

Remove form oven and re-tent with foil for 15 minutes before cutting
