FROM THE PUBLISHER

With this edition, we are proud to kick off several new initiatives and partners to start the year. One of the hardest things about this business is staying focused on who we really are – and that’s especially challenging in an industry and community where people are constantly trying to re-invent themselves and possibly not even be aware of who they actually are the first place. As I’ve shared in the past – one of the worst myth’s about our community is that we are made up of scary folks that hate the world. The black leathers and tattoos may confuse some that are looking in from the outside, but it takes only a few minutes to dispel those falsehoods. We are a community of passionate folks that aren’t afraid to take a stand for what they believe in. We are a community with far more motorcycle ministries than “bad guys” – and 98% of the riders find themselves with a blend of both interests, but we often all ride together for the good of a child in need or to support our veterans. That’s what we do – we come together and support each other and those in need. That is who we are, but we could probably do a better job of sharing that aspect and what specific works we are doing. I’ve NEVER believed in making a big deal about all the charity work we do or how many causes we sponsor throughout the year – and that’s fueled misunderstandings and supported misperceptions that might exist. It’s also failed to recognize a lot of great people that have spent years – in many cases – working tirelessly to host rides, organize events, and do the little things that make all the difference to those in need. So with this issue, we are introducing a new “Outreach” feature – covering some of the charitable groups we are working with and the accomplishments we’ve achieved. You’ll find it on page 11 in this edition. In it, we talk about some of the recent fundraisers we’ve helped support and a few upcoming events and campaigns. We will share opportunities for you to contribute – and even jump in the trenches and get your “hands dirty” if you’d like. That’s really the goal – to encourage more to get out and support these causes, and possibly even better – to get involved! As always, we encourage everyone to saddle up and join us for the ride! We are also proud to introduce a new Presenting Sponsor this year – Erskine Law. A dedicated law firm that serves as counsel to Fortune 500 companies because of the experience and integrity they offer. They have represented some of the largest corporations in the country – while remaining just as committed to the small business clients and individuals that have retained them. For those injured in a motorcycle accident, motor vehicle accident or even a slip and fall, Erskine Law is committed to meeting your needs from start to finish. While not a “motorcycle law firm” – they are a prestigious firm that’s committed to serving the motorcycle community and our efforts to support those making a difference. If you find yourself in need of an attorney – your first concern shouldn’t be what that attorney rides, it should be to find an experienced attorney with the resources of a solid firm behind them. You want a firm with riders, and an understanding of our community and our needs. You want someone that is going to be committed to meeting those needs and protecting your rights. We are proud to represent Erskine Law in this regard. www.ErskineLaw.com It’s through the support of sponsors such as Erskine Law and Progressive Insurance, as well as our local network of dealerships and businesses such as Iron Pony, South East Harley-Davidson, and Arsenal Harley-Davidson – to name a few – that we are able to do the work we do. Yes, it’s how we support our families – but we also help support local riding communities throughout our region as well. And we couldn’t do any of it – without all of you. Thank you – and BEST WISHES for a safe and successful 2024! Sincerely, Derek A Smith Publisher / CEO

BECOME A LOCAL ROAD REP

If you’re a rider that’s active in your local riding community, we’d invite you to consider becoming a Local Road Rep for Reasons To Ride. This is NOT meant to be a sales position or full time job for anyone – but is a chance to help promote local events and businesses, while making a “few dollars” to support your riding habit! Like most things, you get what you put out of it – but it’s meant to be a fun gig for riding enthusiasts. If you’re really active and cover a larger area, you can make good money – but that takes time and a commitment. The real payoff is to have a good time as the person to see about getting their events or even just their picture in the local biker mag. We aren’t looking for guys wanting to be “part-time bad guys” or any nonsense like that, we’re looking for reliable good folks that want to help support others in the community. The ideal folks might be active supporters of a local charity ride, and are looking to expand their activities while getting more exposure for their own ride. We can handle the sales aspects of the area, but we will look to you for pictures of local events and updates as to what’s coming up. And you’ll be able to make some money doing what you’re most likely already doing. We’re asking for a minimum time commitment of 8-10 hours a month. It helps if you have a laptop and a camera – although a smartphone can usually do it. You’ll get some cool swag, access to rallies and other events, and a chance to help a lot of local folks. As our coverage and presence in the area increases, you are able to share in the revenue generated. It’s a pretty proven business plan – it’s what built this entire organization. We think it’s a pretty good deal – for the right folks. If any of this sounds interesting to you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We will be scheduling “Intro Video Seminars” over the next few months to help explain how it all works. And now is the time to jump in, as we prepare for the upcoming riding season! So don’t delay – send us an email and tell us a little bit about yourself! Info@ReasonsToRide.com 6

WINTER CHECK-IN’s!

Ride Stops!

In May, Reasons To Ride will kick things off for the 2024 Ride n’ Win Riding Challenge! This challenge isn’t a skills challenge – it’s a challenge to just get out and ride as much as possible and share where you’ve been. We encourage riders to explore new areas and check out new events. We challenge riders to join us at new rallies and rides all across the Midwest – and even at some of the biggest national events across the country. And along the way, we’re looking for new places to stop! Since its launch in 2011, this program has evolved and grown every year as we try to improve things and ensure that it’s a great time for everyone. This year is no exception, as we add even MORE STOPS and WAY MORE PRIZES! Our primary area of focus for our Midwest stops is across Michigan and Ohio. However, we will also be adding stops throughout West Virginia, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania as we develop our new Reasons To Ride: Appalachia programs in 2024. This is some of the best riding in the country and there are literally hundreds of really cool stops to discover.

While the snow is flying across the Midwest and the temperatures are falling, many of us have our bikes parked for the winter; however, there are still plenty of opportunities for you to score prizes with our “Ride n Win” campaign! When you’re out and about – and especially if you’re at one of our Ride Stops or partner locations, post up a pic to your Facebook of Instagram with the hashtag #ReasonsToRide. You’ll instantly be entered for the chance to win great prizes – including WEEKEND PASSES to the 2024 Buckeye Motorcycle and Music Rally! You could see LYNYRD SKYNRD, HANK WILLIAMS JR., BRANTLEY GILBERT, FUEL, and so many more acts – FOR FREE, just for checking in and sharing a tagged pic! How cool is that?!

If you own a business, are hosting a ride or other motorcycle friendly event, or would like to recommend a place for riders to visit – shoot us an email for more information on how to become a ride stop. Over 50,000 riders have participated in this program since launched – and we’ve awarded over 3,000 prizes – including motorcycles, travel packages, rally passes, concert tickets – and of course HUNDREDS of t-shirts and other swag! For more information, email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com

A time to look forward and leave the past behind, A time for adventure, new discoveries to find. Fresh starts aren’t so easy, nor for the faint at heart. The old things are so familiar, and it’s so hard to part. Yet come away we must, for there’s much more along the way, And a new look at life with each coming day. Look forward to the New Year, and set some goals just for you, Start with just the little things and watch the bigger things come through! Open your heart to receive the best, don’t let a challenge hold you back. You will find new strength within yourself if you don’t let up the slack. OUTREACH REPORT For over 20 years, our team has helped support local charitable events and non-profit organizations. In 2024, however, we are going to start sharing a lot more of what we’re doing – both in an effort to showcase the organizations and causes that we are working with, as well as encourage others to join in!

HOSTING A RIDE IN 2024? OFFER ONLINE PRE-REGISTRATION!

Reasons To Ride is working with corporate sponsors to offer Online Registration at NO COST to non-profit organizations or the charities they support through Ticket Releaf, Inc. This is an easy way to vastly improve your event by allowing more accurate planning, better protect against inclement weather, and expedite processing on the day of your event – to name just a few advantages. RtR can help arrange local, regional, or even national sponsors to help cover the cost of the online registration and marketing of your ride! Restrictions do apply – email Info@ReasonsToRide.com for more information.

IT’S A TEAM THING. RtR Offers Promotional Partnerships to Regional Riding Organizations and Charitable Groups For 2024, one of our primary goals will be to develop regional partnerships with charitable organizations to both help support these groups and the work they do – as well as help promote the magazines and RTR partners within their region. The belief is that by working together, we can increase the impact and reach of both our messages. Working with other regional partners and sponsors, there will also be opportunities for partner organizations to raise funds to support their organizations or their designated charities. Again, it’s a great opportunity for RtR to team up with established organizations to share revenues and ensure that everyone benefits from the partnership. We’d much rather work with a charitable organization than sell them an ad – it’s a WIN WIN for everyone involved. For more information, please email Info@ReasonsToRide.com

UGLY SWEATERS and HOLIDAY CHEER! RtR teams up with Zeppe’s and local volunteers to help support Women Safe On Wednesday, December 13th – Zeppe’s Tavern in Newbury OH, hosted an Ugly Sweater Party to raise fund for Women Safe, Inc The Green House. This great organization provides emergency shelter and support services to survivors of domestic violence in Northeast Ohio. The informal fundraiser raised over $500, helping to make the holidays a little brighter for families served by Women Safe

RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES PRESENTED BY ERSKINE LAW

CUSTOMIZE HER FOR THE SHOW! Now’s the time to start preparing.

As a BIKER or rider, your ride is what most visibly defines you within the community – at least as far as first impressions go. Ever since the first riders sat in the saddle, we’ve been customizing our bikes. While there are many that simply want to ride – even the most ardent purist usually takes pride in their bike. From the basic bolt-ons, most riders start envisioning how they can customize their bike from the moment they get em’ home – if not before. And once you’ve started down that path – the next step is to show off what you’ve done. Sure, that starts with riding down to the local hangouts and bike nights, but eventually you should really consider putting your bike in a motorcycle show. With winter upon us, there’s no better time to take your bike apart and customize her without keeping you both off the road. And even if you’ve already got yourself a custom or vintage ride – there’s plenty that you can do to prepare her to exhibit at a bike show. And if you have a bike that you’d like to customize and show – there are almost limitless options before you. Here are just a few suggestions and areas that you might consider, when it comes to preparing your bike to exhibit at a show. We can also go ahead and let you know that there are countless things you can do without breaking the bank, and some of them are the most critical areas that the judge is going to consider you bike on. But of course, there are plenty of means to spend A LOT of money on your bike. Some just have more of an impact than others.

Give Her a Shine! The most basic and in most cases – essential – means of preparing your bike for a show is to make sure she is all clean and polished up. If you don’t want to make a lot of changes to your bike and exhibit her as a true stock bike worthy of attention and recognition (ie., trophies) – you should become an expert at detailing! If you’ve got a lot of chrome or paint that really shines, it will get the attention and separate you out from bikes that haven’t received enough love from their owners. Stay tuned for an upcoming article on how to really clean up / detail part of your bike – along with a list of recommended products to use.

12

Upgrade Your Wheels The wheels are one of the first things people notice about a bike, especially if it’s sitting still. Your wheels are also one of the most important parts of your bike as you couldn’t move without them. With that said, you should consider purchasing high-quality rims and tires to suit your ride. Whether you’re an expert on the road or just starting out as a biker, upgrading your motorcycle wheels is the perfect way to gain extra attention on a ride or at a bike show. There are lots of different options when it comes to wheels – and not all relate to expensive custom cast or milled styles. There are lots of cool upgrade options with spokes and paint. Many of these can be done at a home shop as well.

New Handlebars Handlebars are a relatively easy – and sometimes – inexpensive way to make a very noticeable change in the look of your bike. It’s also one of the easiest ways to dramatically change the handling of your bike as well – and usually not for the better. Wider bars can make low speed turns awkward and while ape hangers can look really cool – they are not always the most comfortable for longer rides.

YOUR MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE POWERED BY REASONSTORIDE.COM

Change up the Saddle This is one upgrade that can make a dramatic difference in both the look and comfort of your bike – for better or worse. There are an almost endless number of options for changing up your saddle – and almost all will impact the rideability. You can go with a slick, lowprofile seat and easily give your bike a custom look without changing anything else on the bike. However, one of the worst rides I ever experienced was on a show bike riding from Geneva to Cleveland, Ohio. While the frame and suspension itself was stock – we had gone with a low profile seat from one of the more respected names in the industry. That low hard seat seemed worse than an iron tractor seat, and I could barely walk by the time I made it to even the Cleveland burb’s. But on the other hand, the seat flowed beautifully with the custom tank – making it look like the frame itself had been modified. Conversely, there are a lot of great options with aftermarket foams and designs that can deliver a stylish seat that’s a far better fit for your specific riding style – while offering more STYLE and looks to match the rest of your custom ride. Stay tuned or visit us online, for recommended shops – maybe even local – that can rebuild and customize your seat for the fraction of purchasing a “factory custom” seat. And in many cases you can add your own personal touches that give a truly CUSTOM look.

RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES PRESENTED BY ERSKINE LAW Custom Paint

SOUND / ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM If you’re working on a touring bike more than a few years old, chances are that the most outdated feature of the bike is the sound system. I’ve got two bikes that still have cassette decks on them. If this is the case for you – one of the biggest game changers for your bike might just be upgrading the sound. For many “purists” that would mean the exhaust – but for those that ride long distances or simply enjoy the tunes while out riding, the ability to play music is a big one. With the growing popularity of “sound competitions” – motorcycle audio is taking center stage in terms of customization and bike upgrades. The most basic first step might be to upgrade the existing speakers. In most cases this is the first place your systems start degrading – and nothing else matters if you can’t transform the signals into sound. Next you should consider adding additional speakers and possibly an amplifier to drive them. And then you’re left with the source unit itself – which is the most visible component in the whole system. It’s also where the audio component becomes an “entertainment center” as you add bigger screens and more features.

Nothing quite defines your bike like the color or paint job – and if you want to customize her, that’s a pretty core aspect to consider. It can also be one of the most expensive steps to take – depending on what you decide to do.

And then you’ll want to bring it all together and fine tune the system to exactly what you’re looking for. This might mean an equalizer or simply dialing in the system to accommodate the components and style of music you prefer.

Your imagination is really the only limit to what you can do to your bike – and not really even that, because most experienced painters will quickly come up with ideas of their own. And there are just so many options out there to consider. You can just do a cool base color, or you can add flake or other cool effects. You can also stick with what you have and simply embellish it with custom air brushing or pinstriping. In many cases, this work can even be done at rallies or bike nights featuring such artists while you wait.

We will be focusing on sound systems in the next edition.

You can even choose to wrap your bike in film – keeping and actually protecting the paint job below! Not only are there a wide range of options available – there is just as wide a range in terms of cost. Custom bike shops can handle everything start to finish – potentially totally changing the identity of your bike as easily as dropping her off at the job. Or you can take off all the sheet metal and prepare things to save some cost. And even if you don’t have prior experience – you can even take a stab at painting her yourself. There are SOOO many YouTube videos on how you can not only apply a coat of paint – but can include custom effects as well. Some of the coolest paint jobs we’ve seen at shows have been done at home – even with rattle cans. Where there’s a will – there’s usually a way. So many different options…. Another cost saving option is to take all the sheet metal off yourself, and then take it to a local auto body shop. Many of the auto body shops will expertly shoot the tins – especially if you disassemble everything for them.

Again sooo many options. The key is to develop a vision for what you want to do. Get out and check out the local bike shows. Look through the magazines and see what others have done, so you can get an idea of what direction to go in. And then start writing it down – or recruit a shop or builder that can run with it. And once you have it all done – come on out and let us share it with the world at one of our bike shows!! ATTENTION SHOPS and SUPPLIERS – We will be continuing this series by featuring different shops and reviewing various products available. If you’d like to be featured or contribute pictures / content to any of these articles – email us at Info@ReasonsToRide.com

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

Motorcycle Sport Touring Association News for 2024 Motorcycle Sport Touring Association has been around for over forty years, having begun as the Honda V4 Owners Club in the early 1980s. The original club soon became a home for riders of all brands of sport touring bikes who love riding twisty roads. I joined in 2001 and began attending club rallies, becoming vice president in 2017. Last month, president Pat Mogavero stepped down after seven wonderful years and I became president this month, at a time of great opportunity for the club. In the 2010s, MSTA was having all the problems then common to membership organizationsolder members were ageing out and leaving the club at the same time younger people became less interested in motorcycling and joining membership organizations. After Pat became president and started putting out fires, things began improving- membership levels stabilized and attendance at our rallies increased. 2023 was a very good year and now there is even more good news and excitement for 2024.

MSTA group on Facebook We carefully moderate our public Facebook group to control outside advertising, off topic and hostile posts so the group is friendly, informative and fun. This past summer Facebook apparently noticed and started recommending our group to other Facebook members. Now the rate of new access requests is about five times what it was

last Spring, so our group is growing rapidly. Since a percentage of Facebook group members join the paid club membership each year, membership is starting to grow. Check out the group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/RideMSTA

MSTA affiliate clubs Another form of outreach is affiliation with other clubs that have similar interests. For example, MSTA is now a chartered member of BMW Riders of America, and the two clubs are planning a joint rally event at Canaan Valley West Virginia, near Davis, June 22 - 26. Canaan Valley is one of our favorite venues, with a great hotel and plenty of twisty roads winding through the Appalachian mountains. https://ridemsta.com/wv-canaan/

MSTA event news Tusky-Musky rally- Of particular interest to Ohio and Michigan readers is this new event at New Philadelphia, in east central Ohio, May 3 - 5. Named for Tuskawarus county and the Muskingum river, which flows through the center of the area, attendees will enjoy riding the curvy scenic roads of eastern Ohio Amish country and the Ohio valley from Mohican State park to the northern panhandle of West Virginia. This area features plenty of hills and rivers but very few straight roads. https://ridemsta.com/oh-tmr/ Triple M- Montrose Motorcycle Meetup- Colorado state director Doug Logsdon is planning this new full-featured rally to be held in Montrose, Colorado, September 13 - 15. It will include a selection of both road and ADV routes. https://ridemsta.com/co-mmm TriSTAR- is being upgraded to a full regional rally for 2024. thanks to the efforts of MSTA's new vice president Lou Laguna. Lou was Pennsylvania state director for several years until he retired from his job at a Pennsylvania college. This past summer he moved to Sparta, North Carolina, where the MSTA TriSTAR rally has been held for many years. In recent years, TriSTAR had become a limited just-for-fun event, as there were no local members who could take care of the details for it. Now that Lou lives in Sparta, he is making all the arrangements needed so the rally will have dinner tours, shelters with tables and chairs in the parking lot at the hotel and lots of other amenities to bring back TriSTAR as an official regional rally on memorial day weekend, May 23 - 27 https://ridemsta.com/nc-tristar/ Fall Colors- Lou and I are also taking over the annual Fall Colors rally at Lewisburg, West Virginia, September 26 - 29. It's always a fun time, and it too will be upgraded to an official MSTA regional rally. https://ridemsta.com/nc-tristar/

Texas Hill Country STAR- MSTA's annual national STAR rally will be held in Kerrville, Texas this year. It is normally held in mid June, but Texas is hot that time of year so it was decided to move the dates to near the end of October. Since that would leave the calendar with no June event, the Canaan Valley rally was moved from May to June to fill the void for this year.

How to join in the fun for 2024FlyBy Week- will be back at Comfort Suites Marietta, Ohio, August 19 - 25. As usual there will be over three dozen routes, dinner tours, bike wash, free massages and much more. New for 2024- The Ohio ADV Riders Facebook group will be joining us and leading adventure rides all week. https://flybyweek.com

POKER RUN 101: PART 1: How to Get Started “A poker run is an organized event where participants, usually using motorcycles, must visit five to seven checkpoints, drawing a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. The event has a time limit however, the participants are not timed -winning is purely a matter of chance.” - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia “A poker run is basically a chance for folks to get together and ride, hang out and have a good time for the day – and then end up at a party! And a lot of times, it’s for a good cause which makes it that much cooler!” Bikers celebrate a lifestyle that is built around riding and enjoying the camaraderie of other bikers. With our increasingly hectic lifestyle, few of us have the opportunity to take off on an easy rider style ride. More often we look for local organized rides as a chance to meet other riders and simply get out on the bike. Some of the most popular events are the local poker runs that fill our event listings all summer long. Over the last few years, more and more organizations have taken to hosting motorcycle poker runs as a means to raise funds and spread awareness. In many cases, the poker runs are hosted by local biker bars, but often times the host organizations have nothing to do with riding at all! Despite any stereotypes or media attention otherwise, our society has certainly recognized the generosity of bikers and our willingness to help others. "Years ago, there were four or five biker poker runs that everyone attended. Now there are a dozen every weekend. Some of us joke that one of these days we’re going to find ourselves riding on the Wounded Butterfly Run,” one local ride organizer lamented. “It’s not a bad thing, but certainly some runs are better than others. And I’m not just talking about the cause, but the ride itself.” There are many important considerations when it comes to planning any charity event – and there are many unique ones when it comes to planning a motorcycle ride. Even if you’re an experienced rider, that doesn’t necessarily make you competent to host an event. Planning a ride for 1,000, 200, or even 100 riders is a lot different than planning a run for you and a few friends. “One of the most common mistakes I’ve seen made is planning a route with cross-traffic stops. For instance, if you’re routing everyone west bound, your stops should be on the north side of the road – allowing your riders to make an easy right turn into the stop. If your stop is on the other side of the road, the riders are forced to stop and wait for oncoming traffic. This can hold up traffic and cause problems, especially if you have a lot of riders. And these problems can lead to someone getting hurt or worse.” If this is your first motorcycle event or ride, we would certainly recommend that you find someone with experience in organizing such events and better yet, an entire organization that has the knowledge on such things. There are countless riding organizations out there. From Harley Owners Groups ™ and traditional AMA motorcycle clubs to civil service and military riding groups, there are plenty of experienced groups that can help with your event. ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) is a grass roots, non-profit organization focused on motorcyclist's rights and promoting safe riding practices. They have chapters throughout the state and have great resources when it comes to organizing a riding event.

There are also professional organizations and promoters that handle such events as well. As always, it’s a question of cost and return on investment. A grass roots riding organization may be able to bring a lot of volunteers (and consequently riders) to your event – all for a portion of the proceeds or maybe even just for the exposure. A marketing professional or event organizer may do it all for a flat fee – working with your own volunteers or his staff and temps. It all depends upon your situation and the dynamics of it. A 50% split with a local riding organization may end up costing a lot more than a $3,000 consulting fee charged by a professional promoter. But if you find a partner charity with a large volunteer base – they may work a deal that is much more beneficial for you. It all comes back to depending on your specific resources and needs. Most importantly, you need to determine how many people you have available to help plan, promote, and finally host the event. The first step in planning a Poker Run “is making sure that you have enough people to work the event,” according to another local ride organizer. “There’s a lot of work to be done beforehand, which a few hard-working people can knock out, but you’re going to need people to work the actual event.” “From the folks handing out the cards to people flagging the bikes in the lot, it takes a lot of people to host a well- organized run.”

HOW TO PROPERLY STORE YOUR BIKE Don't just park her for the Winter! substances that can affect the carburetor. Run the bike so the gas and fuel stabilizer get to the carburetor and fuel injectors.then turn off the fuel and run it dry. It’s important to note that you DON’T want to leave any Ethanol blended gas in your tank for any extended period of time. The ethanol will absorb the moisture and develop a thick sludge within the tank. While I make every effort to ride year round, the reality is that not only do I live in Ohio - I live in the “Snow Belt”. Some “hard core” riders scoff at the idea of storing your bike, but reality is that at the very least you will be riding her less. This is especially important if you have more than one bike. One of the worst things you can do to your motorcycle - especially the engine - is to simply leave it sitting there. Rust starts to form everywhere, rubber seals and o-rings dry out and harden, and your gas degrades (especially if you have any Ethanol in it). If you simply push your bike into the corner of your garage and walk away for a few months - don’t be surprised if it won’t run in the spring. If you want it to fire up and run first thing when you want it - you need to take care of it and properly winterize it. The following is a general list of items that you should consider as you prepare your bike for storage. Of course, all bikes are different and many have unique needs. Check your manual or with a service tech for advice as to your bike’s specific needs.

The “stuff” you’ll need. You will need, cleaning cloths, spark plug wrench, a trickle battery charger, four or five quarts of high quality oil, new oil filter, oil can or device to get oil in the cylinders, chain lube (if you have a chain drive), fuel stabilizer, spray can of WD40, a breathable motorcycle cover, kitchen plastic wrap, rubber bands, vinyl or plastic gloves, items to clean and wax your bike. Lastly a nice location for the bike to spend the winter, a heated secure garage would be ideal. Avoid wind, dripping water, vermin, mildew, and chemical fumes. 24

3. Drain your Float Bowls, if you have a carburetor. 1. Clean your Bike. A gentle wash detergent and water will suffice. By removing road grime and insects you will protect the finish of the bike. Avoid spraying water directly into the opening of the muffler. If baffles get wet and are not dried prior storage, internal rust could result. Likewise avoid moisture in the air cleaner housing. If the housing becomes saturated, it could act as a choke, making your bike difficult to start. Use a blow dryer, leaf blower, or a commercial motorcycle blower to dry and then detail with a good chamois. Clean and polish all aluminum and stainless surfaces with the appropriate metal polish. Finally finish up with a coat of good wax polish on all painted and chrome surfaces. Clean the chain (if you have one). Spray off all the built up residues with WD40. Lube the chain.

2. Add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank. Fill your tank with gas as full as it can go. This is very important. As fuel ages, more volatile components tend to change, leaving sludge and gummy

Shut off the gas petcock and drain the gas from the carburetor bowls. Consult your manual for location of drain screws. Of course if you have a fuel-injected bike, there isn’t anything to drain.

4. Change your Oil Oil chemistry changes over periods of extended storage. Old oil can develop acidic qualities, which can corrode engine parts.

5. Oil the front forks. Using a “turkey baster” put oil over the stationary tubes on the front forks. Then get onto the bike and bounce the bike up and down, while holding the front brake. This will work the front suspension and spread the oil. The oil will keep the rubber seals from drying out and protect the exposed fork tubes.

6. Pull the Spark Plugs Remove spark plug wires, and carefully with a spark plug wrench remove the plugs. With your oil-squirting device, get some motor oil in the cylinders. Approximately one teaspoon of oil will work well. Tuck the plug wires away somewhere safe so they do not arc, then spin the motor with the starter for a few revolutions to get the oil spread around. Remember to keep your face away from the spark plug holes. Oil will squirt out! Clean and gap the plugs and put them back in. Replace plug wires.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG!

7. Remove the Battery

Check the tire pressure. Adjust as needed and leave a reminder to check in Spring.

Cleaning the chrome and aluminum parts on your bike - especially rims - with a good polish will keep them relatively clean and easier for Spring clean up. A light coating of silicone lube will give limited protection while in storage. It will need to be washed off before taking out when the weather breaks.

10. Check the “little things” Some batteries may require charging every four weeks with a “Battery Tender” type of charger. Built up sulfates on the plates can ruin a battery during cold storage and inactivity. A thin coat of Vaseline to the terminals on the battery can prevent corrosion. This small step will mean an easier spring start up and no extra cost of battery replacement.

8. Check your coolant.

(If you have a liquid cooling system on your bike.) Check it’s level of anti-freeze with a hygrometer. Drain, flush and replace antifreeze if necessary. We suggest this replacement be done every two years. Do not leave the antifreeze level low or empty, this could lead to rust or corrosion of the cooling system. Check all other fluid levels at this time.

9. Check your Tires and Wheels.

Lube your cables. Lube suspension and pivot points. Lube the drive shaft (if you have one). Check the air cleaner and the fuel filter. Look at brake pads. Give your bike a good once over.

11. Clean and Treat all Leather and Vinyl Detail your leathers with a cleaner or conditioner such as Eagle One Carnuba Leather Cream or Mother’s Leather Cleaner. While you have it out, this is a great time to clean up your leather riding gear as well. After the cleaner or conditioner is dry, buff with a soft cloth. There are several good vinyl cleaners you can use - and then follow with a vinyl protector..

temperatures may affect sensitive gauges and other equipment during winter storage. Why risk it?

14. Store the Bike If your storage location is bare concrete, we suggest using a piece of plywood, MDF, or old thick carpet. This will insulate the bike from becoming damp. We also suggest storing your bike with all the weight removed from the wheels. A bike stand or some blocking works if you have a wheeled lift. A center stand and some blocking will work too. Do not store your bike near any ozone emitting devices, such as motors, freezers, furnaces or electric heaters. The gasses they create will deteriorate rubber parts. Cover your motorcycle with a good breathable cover or a soft cotton bed sheet to keep the dust off. This does not prevent condensation from forming on your ride, but it keeps dust, etc. off the motorcycle.

14. DON’T run the engine for short periods of time over the storage period, this can lead to condensation due to engine and combustion byproducts in the oil. With the battery tender on there is no reason for this.

12. Protect the Metal With a clean cloth, wipe good quality light machine oil over all the metal surfaces, except the disc brakes. Spray a little WD40 in the tail pipe(s). Cover your tail pipe opening and the air intake with plastic wrap and a rubber band. You can also cover drain hoses as well. This will prevent any opportunistic pests from making a cozy winter home in your bike.

13. Remove the Accessories Take off any removable accessories, especially electronics or temperature sensitive items. If you have a “Temp Oil Gauge” dipstick - remove it and replace it with the original. Store the “Temp Gauge” in a warm place for the winter. Come and Take a Ride with the Hatfields & McCoys By Jay “FryDaddy” Fryman, Founder of the Whitley County Motorcycle Group & RtR Contributor Now that we have taken you on a ride through Country Music History, this month we are going to take you to another incredible area to ride and explore in our Free Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application and it's just a short hop from where we left off last month. Just a few gear shifts away from Country Music Highway 23 or as we call it Country Music Gateway 23, you will find the town of Pikeville, The county seat of Pike County Kentucky. Home to several of our great trail routes but we will talk about that later. Pike County also happens to be home of Kentucky's most famous family…. The McCoys! And just a short distance away in West Virginia along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River you will find the home of West Virginia's most famous family, The Hatfields! Now some say the feud started after the men in each family returned home from the Civil War, with families serving on different sides, but most agree here locally that this feud really all started over a dispute in ownership of a HOG! We know how much we all love our own HOGs so it kind of makes sense but this was over an actual PIG! This famous family feud escalated even further when Roseanna McCoy entered a relationship with Devil Anse's son Johnson, known as "Johnse" (spelled "Jonce" in some sources), leaving her family to live with the Hatfields in West Virginia. There is a whole lot more to that story including a baby and another cousin but we do not have the space to tell you about it here. On election day in 1882 things got much worse as Ellison Hatfield, brother of Anse, was killed by three of Roseanna's younger brothers who stabbed him 26 times and finished him off with a gunshot! Then there was the New Year’s Eve Massacre in 1888 when “Devil Anse” and the Hatfields attacked and burned the McCoy Family’s houses and shot everyone who fled! We are just scraping the surface of this stranger than fiction feud which officially ended in 2003 when a peace treaty was signed by kin on both sides officially ending the feud which has inspired many things including a game show. I bet

you can guess the name of that one?!. Now they hold many great events on both sides of the border such as the “Hatfield and McCoy Homecoming” the “Hatfield and McCoy Reunion” to celebrate the history of their families and the World’s most famous family feud. You do not have to attend an event or google this information to learn about the Bloody History of these infamous families as you can experience all that right now from the back of your Iron Horse firsthand! Thanks to our partnership with Hatfield-McCoy Trails and our relationships with the State of Kentucky and the State of West Virginia, we are able to bring you this one of a kind riding experience that can only be found right here on the Backroads of Appalachia! From our GPS-Enabled Bootlegger's Shuffle Route in Pikeville, Ky to HMT’s “Devil’s Den” Trail System over the border in WV, which includes 11 routes and over 1000 miles and is Named after “Devil Anse” Hatfield himself! You can now ride the backroads once traveled by both families and visit many locations where these families lived and where they feuded! This is one bad ass ride you definitely want on your bucket list as the scenery, mountains, curves, and history of this area are truly unforgettable. On this self-guided tour/ride you can even visit their old homeplaces such as the McCoy Cabin Site and the Hatfield Homeplace and even the Hatfield Cemetery where all the feuding Hatfields from back then are buried. Do not forget to visit the Hatfield and McCoy Museum in Sarah Ann, WV not far from the Hatfield Cemetery. The Hatfield and McCoy Trails System offers a whole lot more than just great riding for us pavement pounders with plenty of Off-Road and Outdoor Adventure for those who like it rough! Go visit our partners at trailsheaven.com for more information and discover Country Music Gateway 23, Bootlegger’s Shuffle and HMT’s “Devil’s Den” now by downloading our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application available free for IOS and Android! Also do not miss our “WCMG/BOA Down in the “Devil's Den” Hatfield and McCoy Ride coming in the spring to our 2024 schedule! So what are you waiting for? You Ain't Skeered are Ya? And of course – you can always visit us online at BackRoadsofAppalachia.org or on Facebook!

RECIPES

One of my favorites. You can make this with any meat and serious change up the marinades. Try your favorite Asian, Mexican, Italian, Indian, Morrison, etc – whatever you like!!!

Grilled Cow Sticks (Bee Satay) Serve 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 1 pound beef tenderloin, cut against the grain into 2-inch strips 20 wooden skewers, soaked in water 30 minutes 1 cup plain yogurt 1 tsp freshly grated ginger 1 tsp minced garlic 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp coriander 1 tsp light soy sauce 1 tsp crushed red pepper (optional) 1/2 cup lime, juiced Cooking spray Cilantro leaves and lime wedges, for garnish Soak wooden skewers in water for an hour. Thread the beef onto the soaked skewers, working the skewers in and out of the meat so that it stays in place while grilling. Combine yogurt, ginger, garlic, cumin, coriander, soy, red pepper (optional) and lime juice in a shallow platter and stir well to combine. Place the beef skewers into the yogurt marinade and turn them until they are well coated. Cover and let the meat marinate in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours turning at least once Coat a grill pan with cooking spray and place it on the stove top over medium heat or spray outside grill grate and heat to medium Grill the sticks for 3 to 5 minutes on each side, until nicely seared and cooked through but don’t overcook or they can get tough Serve piled on a large platter garnished with cilantro and lime wedges
