FROM THE PUBLISHER
As we head into September we mark the end of what most consider the main riding season here in the Midwest, but of course – there’s still PLENTY of riding still left to do. In fact, this is not only my own favorite time of year to ride – but it’s also time for some of my favorite riding events as well.
Sometimes I wonder if it’s just me – but certainly everyone seems to reiterate the same sentiment… this summer seems to have just flown by! Seems like just yesterday, we were getting ready for Ohio Bike Week and the start of the riding season. Of course, my head spins when I pause to think about all the rides, rallies, bike nights, bike shows, tattoo parties, and more that we have not only attended – but HOSTED as well!
We’ve been hosting events for more than 15 years, but we’ve never had a lineup like this one. This has easily been one of our busiest years ever, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering that we’ve expanded our focus to include all of our surrounding states as well.
There are still the same number of weeks in the year, days in the week, but our crews now cover events throughout the Midwest. So on any given week, our event teams can be logging hundreds of miles running up and down 71, 75, or 23, across 70, 94, 30, or 96 – not to mention the endless country roads we run.
It’s important to clarify, though, that these are our event teams and trailers. We still have local Road Reps and Contributors that focus on specific local riding communities. These riders are our connection to the rides, events, and stops in your specific area – and they are our key to keeping engaged. The local Road Reps hit the local Bike Nights, participate in the charity rides, and are the resource for the local organizations and riders. Sometimes they participate in the bigger events, traveling to regional rallies or events – but their main focus is their own area.
Behind them, though, they have the backing of a larger organization with more than 20 years of experience serving riders and promoting / hosting riding events. We have the backing of ReasonsToRide.com – the nation’s premier motorcycle event website. ReasonsToRide.com doesn’t just list the events, it offers ride registrations, concert ticket sales, and even bike show registrations. You can map routes, view the actual event locations, and of course search the nation for specific types of events – all on one website. How cool is that?
But again, the local Road Reps and our involvement in the local riding community is what sets us apart. By working with local riding groups and charitable organizations, regional promoters and motorcycle oriented businesses – we are able to keep our riders better informed.
As we begin looking towards 2024, I’d encourage you to do more than simply ride your local roads and hit your local bike nights. If you’re not already involved in a riding organization – albeit an owners group, a club, charitable organization, or even motorcycle ministry – I’d encourage you to get MORE INVOLVED. Don’t simply ride through these communities around us. Become engaged and a PART of the riding community.
And if you enjoy meeting new people and supporting various local businesses and events – I’d humbly invite you to consider joining our team. As a Reasons To Ride Rep or contributor – you can help support your local riding community and even make some extra cash on the side, doing what you love and are already most likely doing. You never know, you might just find that Reason to Ride and the open road are your calling! Email us for more information, info@ReasonsToRide.com
We look forward to seeing everyone out on the road – and maybe even hearing from a few of you!

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES
MARY GILBERT, CMA STATE COORDINATORIt’s a Beautiful Thing…
You know, one of my favorite times of the year is harvest time. The garden is putting forth its fruit and vegetables just waiting for the moment we can pluck them from their vines and enjoy a wonderful meal of freshness! Then, we get to either can or freeze them so amid the winter months, we can have that freshness all over again, reminding us of the goodness that comes with the fruit of our labor.
That’s much like it is when we introduce others to Jesus. We are the laborers in the field of life, looking for the harvest of souls that need a fresh new outlook on life. Oh, what great benefits come with that harvest! Not only do we get the honor of introducing others to our Savior, but we also get the privilege of enjoying a newfound friendship/family tie that will not ever be broken! How does that happen in just a few minutes of time? Because of the love of Jesus. He brings us together, gives us something to share and wa-la! The connection is made!
The cool part about all of that is that much like harvesting crops and putting them up for the winter, we get to pour into others the beautiful gift of the word of God so they can store up for those dry and dormant times that the never ceasing enemy uses to make us think we have nothing. That’s when we can reach into the ‘storage room’ of our hearts and say, ‘Not today devil…I have food you know not of!’ Pretty cool, huh? Here’s the best part… Because Jesus said He would never leave nor forsake us, we are assured that He is always on the ready to help us through the tough times. We won’t starve for truth because His truth is in us, we won’t lack for anything because His supply is never ending, and we won’t die because He promises life everlasting! I could go on, but I think you get it. Plant, water, grow, harvest, store. It’s a 5-step plan…and since 5 is the number of grace, His grace is sufficient to help us follow through!! Can I get an amen on that one?
Let me tell you what we have been doing lately and why…
CMA is an evangelistic outreach ministry that is primarily, but not exclusively serving the motorcycling community. Our vision is ‘Changing the world, one heart at a time.’ And we accomplish this vision through a servant’s attitude, thus we love to be ‘Here when you need us.’ We equip our members with ministry training that aligns itself with Biblical truths. We have one fundraiser a year, Run for the Son, in which we partner with ministries with world reaching potential. Our mission is to inspire our leaders and members to be the most organized, advanced, equipped, financially stable organization, full of integrity in the motorcycling industry and the Kingdom of God.
CMA has been wherever you are this year…Ohio Bike Week, Laconia, Americade, Sturgis, Daytona, many Biker/bike blessings, the Rodeo, AMA Vintage Days, Flat Track races, community events, you name it, we have made it a point to be there for you! Didn’t see us? Well, just start looking for the EZ up that has our logo on it for all to see, or a CMA feather flag. We are here for you! Just stop by the booth and say hi, we don’t bite…pick up a rag tract (best little tool for your bike!) Come and join us at the Union County Fairgrounds in Marysville, September 15th-16th-17th when we are having our Ohio State Rally. Camping available, great rides, and a Saturday afternoon ‘Carnival’ with Reverse Baseball and a cookout to wrap it up! That fun starts at 2pm! Bring your family too!
Hopefully we will see you around soon, if not at an event, definitely in the Wind!

RIDIN' w BRENDAN
Any of you that have actually read my column, or have seen Ridin' w Brendan episodes have undoubtedly heard me mention Diamondbacks MC. They are a great club from my area in which I have many friends. While I am not a club member, I feel extremely welcomed there and consider many of their brothers mine as well. This past month one of the DBMC's members, Kool Aid, was told his nephew who had been diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease at age five was informed he only had a few weeks with us.. It is never easy to hear about a loved one's time coming to an end but it's just seems so fucking unfair when it is a thirteen year old kid who hasn't yet lived life not to mention battling a disease since age 5. I was present when Kool Aid and Oops were granted their "full patches" and for me it was the first time I had been present when a Prospect was given the honor, I have a lot of love and respect for both of these guys and I will remember that day almost as much as they will.
Brendan Farren, RTR ContributorKool Aid's nephew Aiden LOVED motorcycles and Kool Aid wanted to put on a ride for him. With nobody sure how much time was left he put out the word.
With only a couple days' notice, word spread like wildfire and close to one hundred bikers showed up for Aiden and on a Wednesday.
What other group or community shows up like that? For anyone? Honestly I don't think there is another group of individuals that show up for each other and the community more than bikers. While it is true that not every biker is your brother it is true that the bikers can show up for a fellow biker's nephew even if just to offer some smiles.
Sadly, Aiden left this life to be with the Angels on August 15th. He will be remembered as a Warrior. Aiden, his family and friends and everyone that knew Aiden will be in my prayers. Everyone in the Reasons to Ride family offers their condolences to Aiden's family.
Again I am humbled and proud to be a part of the community that does so much for so many and is usually unsung and misunderstood. Until next time.
RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES SEPT 2023 UPDATE!
Wow – What a spectacular summer it’s been, and we still have two of our most dynamic shows to come! Thunder on the Strip in Geneva-on-the-Lake, OH is one of our all-time favorite rallies – and one that we’ve been hosting events at for over 15 years. More on that in the accompanying article (See PAGES XXX), but the RtR Bike Show at the Geneva-on-the-Lake Thunder Zone is always one of our best of the year and is an exciting end of season blow out for many. And the Dusty Armadillo Bike Show? It’s a “Sunday Funday” celebration of Iron at one of our favorite ride stops anywhere… What more can we say?
The RTR CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES –Why it’s so unique.
All makes, models, and years are truly welcome at the RTR Bike Shows. We have over 15 distinct classes for bikes, and we are constantly adding more as the shows evolve. We group bikes by style and origin, and try to balance things out as much as possible. Categories include designations for Imported and Domestic, Touring, Trikes, Vintage, Racing, and even Radical. Specialty classes include Custom Paint, Patriotic and Military themed bikes, and even a Ladies Class. It's important to recognize that these are INFORMAL, RIDE-IN SHOWS! While we do use Judges at most shows, the majority of the votes come from the crowd. These are fun shows with the emphasis on camaraderie more than competition. If you’ve ever stormed out of a show after not winning the big trophy – these shows aren’t for you. We’ve always believed that the best thing about our bike show series is the people that both exhibit and attend. This isn’t just about the bikes – but about the people building and riding them as well.
Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, these shows are for you if you have a passion for your bike. Go ahead and bring her out – and PUT HER IN THE SHOW!
Make sure that you check out our events listing on Facebook and follow the ones that are of interest to you. We will be posting updates and more details about the new programs as things are finalized. www.Facebook.com/ReasonsToRide

Thunder On The Strip 2023
The THUNDER ZONE Returns to Geneva-On-The-Lake!
Friday, September 8th – Sunday, September 10th
The Landing and Sunset Bar: 5475 Lake Road, Geneva-On-The-Lake, OH
While Ohio Bike Week is Ohio’s Rally and kicks off the riding season for many, Thunder On The Strip is a true “Biker Homecoming” for thousands as they wind down after a summer of riding and head into the Fall / “off-season”. What started as a way to stretch the season out one more weekend – and maybe blow out the final inventory before this historic resort town winds down at the end of summer – has evolved into a celebration of great music and the riding lifestyle. It’s a great chance to catch up and party with riding friends from across the state, before things start to get cold. The local, community driven rally is one of our all time favorites and has been a mainstay on our schedule since it started more than 15 years ago – before we even had the magazine!
The entire village seems to embrace the rally and welcome Bikers for the end of summer wrap-up – and it’s a celebration throughout the entire town!
Over the year’s the Rally has evolved and our “Thunder Zone” has moved down the street to the Marketplace Landing, adjacent to the Old Firehouse Winery and Sunset Bar. Friday through Sunday, we host a relaxed party with live music, vendors, and plenty of bike parking right on America’s North Coast – overlooking Lake Erie. It’s an amazing location with one of the best views on the Strip –especially as the sun sets over the lake. During the day, it’s a great place to relax and enjoy the park like setting – even rolling out a blanket alongside your bike. You can’t beat it. There’s even a historic Ferris Wheel that overlooks the lake!
Iron & Ink TATTOO PARTY
Friday, Sept 8th Sunset Bar / Thunder Zone 6-9pm
It’s a TATTOO PARTY for anyone with ink or an appreciation for it!
Reasons To Ride Ohio will once again be hosting an IRON & INK TATTOO PARTY as part of this year's THUNDER ZONE in Geneva-on-the-Lake. This is an informal contest – offering prizes for both those exhibiting their ink and the artists that did the work! Additionally, the party has an interactive format, that allows folks to see the work being showcased up-close. Participants and guests get to vote on their favorite work and possibly win some prizes! Prizes include custom trophies and placards for both the participants and artists participating, and raffle prizes for those voting!
Photographers will also be on-site from Iron & Ink The Magazine and Reasons To Ride Ohio to photograph some of the work shown and showcase it in both the magazines and online with full recognition of both the exhibitor and the artist / shop. This is not only a great opportunity to show off your work a little – but also to help support your artist.
Register in advance to reserve your spot and get a FREE T-Shirt – on Facebook or through ReasonsToRide.com.
Local tattoo shops are encouraged to participate in the shows and invite their customers out to showcase the work being done by their artists. Special recognition and prizes are awarded to shops having more than 4 customers and at least 1 artist on hand for the contest. (Shops should register in advance by emailing – BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

AMA VINTAGE DAYS 2023
I haven’t written for the magazine for some time. However, as we were heading to Mid Ohio Sports Car Course a couple of weeks ago for our favorite event of the season AMA VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE DAYS, I was reminded of the days when I was a monthly contributor.
This all started years ago when our son and his friends raced road course regularly. Our home track was Nelson Ledges Road Course and there was the yearly stint at Mid Ohio for vintage weekend.
My husband Art and I were home base for many. And here we were years removed from regular race weekends and our racing family still came to the Kennedy compound to visit for conversation, reminiscing, food and drink. We are cheer leaders to those that still compete. Nothing better than watching those we know dragging a knee from our perch in the Keyhole of Mid Ohio.
But as I have said repeatedly over the years there is so much to see and do at this event. The action is constant. From the #1 motorcycle swap meet in the country to the never ending racing at different sections of the complex.
Hare Scrambles were Friday and we were there to see Cleveland’s own Billy Morris formerly of Warrant and his son Penton compete. Penton took a second place on a 65cc bike in the Modern Vintage Class 9-11 years old. The race was 30 minutes and these kids are awesome to watch. Literally over the river and through the woods, it is a tough track with various obstacles and plenty of challenges. Billy also finished second in Modern Vintage 40+ A on a KTM 200.
Motocross and Road Race competition was throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday with flat track at the Ashland County Fairgrounds Saturday evening. The Wall of Death is also a daily attraction over the weekend.
Over the years I have urged readers to come on out. There is literally something for everyone and worth a ride out to experience this event in our own backyard. It’s not a Harley event, it’s not a sport bike event, it’s not a dirt bike event. IT IS a rider’s event.
Unfortunately, I was again recently reminded that there is a contingent or riders out there that don’t believe it is a bike if it does not have an HD on it. While my husband still has a Harley and I still have my Honda Shadow, we use our Yamaha Zuma 125 more often than not. In retirement the scooter fits easily on the back of the motorhome and is our wheels on any given weekend. We are still riders albeit a smaller ride.
Always keep in mind riding is about the community and you will not find a larger community of riders and racers than at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days.
As always, ride safe – Denise Kennedy
by: Denise Kennedy, TROBackroads of Appalachia! - Reasons to Ride Partner
As we move into the later months of Summer and into cooler Fall riding here on the Backroads of Appalachia, we prepare for some of our biggest events and rides of our season. From the Charitable Mercy Medical Angels who attend our Annual “Rebel’s Ride” Event each year at the Whitley County Airport, to the Advanced Riders who have waited all year to tackle Appalachia’s Most Demanding Trail Route, “The IRON”, encompassing 563 Mile, 3 State Lines, and plenty of Appalachian Mountain Curve Awesomeness. There is simply nothing like our Appalachian IRON Butt challenge anywhere out there and it includes 6 of our most popular trail routes including the Dragonslayer 160 and Coal Train 421 just to name a few. Due to these demanding requirements only one group ride is held each year on “The IRON’ and this ride is definitely for the advanced riders out there due to the technical skill and endurance required to complete this route. It is also the only time you can earn the coveted “IRON” patch without completing it within 24 hours. The “IRON” Patch is the only patch in our system that can only be earned by completing the challenge and cannot be purchased. Earning this Patch proves you are an Appalachian “IRON” Warrior and very few riders have accomplished this challenge. In other words it’s a big deal and mucho braggin’ rights! This is just one of many great events held in September by the Whitley County Motorcycle Group, the Motorcycle side of Backroads of Appalachia. Although there is ton of great riding to do here all season long, the Fall months bring cooler riding weather and mother nature begins to take over our mountains creating one of the most incredible season changes found anywhere in the world. With over 5000 Miles of Gps-Enabled routes to experience and 4 states, our free Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application is truly a Rider’s best friend showcasing the absolute best that Central Appalachia has to offer for those who want to take “The Road Less Traveled”. If a main street atmosphere, vendors, live music, and custom bike shows are more your style then you do not want to miss our Annual HARLAN BIKEFEST and Custom Bike Show in late September in Downtown Harlan, Kentucky. Just a few miles from some of our absolute favorite rides! All of these great rides and events
can be found on our Backroads of Appalachia Mobile Application, Our Website, and of course on our Facebook pages. So what are you waiting for? The best riding, scenery, and point of interest you will find anywhere out there is waiting for you right here on the Backroads of Appalachia! Jay Fryman Founder, Whitley County Motorcycle Group Backroads of Appalachia Journalism TeamMake the Most of Your Time at the Range FIREARMS
REPORT
Before heading to the range, make sure that you have a plan in place for what you’re going to do when you get there. This also helps make sure that you don’t forget necessary items.
1) GET FAMILIAR WITH YOUR OWN GUNS
We know it’s fun to go to the range and try out new guns from time to time, in fact, the range is the perfect place to test out a firearm you may be interested in and introduce yourself to a few guns you’re not yet familiar with. If you want to be a better shot, however, you’ll have to start learning the ins and outs of one or two firearms in great detail. This means investing in your own personal weapon, then spending time mastering its controls until they become second nature. You’ll also want to start bringing your own safety gear along, including eye and ear protection.
2) FOCUS ON ACCURACY
It’s not just enough to hit the target, you’ll find. To improve your skills, you’ll want to start focusing on hitting the target consistently and within certain accuracy margins to up your game. Before sending that target too far down range, try keeping it close and seeing if you can keep your shots to within a couple of inches of one another. This is harder to do than it sounds, and once you have it perfected, you can start sending your targets further out to see if you can replicate the feat. In time, you’ll find that your ability to group shots will have improved, along with your overall accuracy.
3) PRACTICE YOUR TRIGGER PULL
You might not realize it yet, but how you choose to pull the trigger can have a great impact on your ability to shoot straight. You’ll want to read up, understand, and absorb the best techniques for pulling the trigger until you can execute them without thinking about it. By and large, you’ll want to pull the trigger firmly and avoid flinching or jerking your firearm as you do. Quick movements of the wrist like that will throw of your aim, leading to decreased accuracy.
4) PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR STANCE
Just like your trigger pull, the way you stand while shooting can have an affect on your ability to hit the target. While you’re at the range, work on adopting the proper beginner shooting stance, which requires you to have your feet about shoulder width apart, and, for right hand shooters, the left foot slightly forward and the right foot slightly backwards. There are, of course other situational stances to learn, but for the range, this basic stance is the one you should practice most as a new shooter.
5) TRY SOME HUMILITY ON FOR SIZE
Thinking that you’ve already got it all down pat is a quick way to make errors and overestimate your shooting ability. A better attitude to adopt, one that will improve your skills faster, is acknowledging that there’s plenty to learn and being receptive to advice dispensed by your instructors and more experienced shooters. There’s a reason they’re well respected. Take their advice to heart and implement that advice, then watch your skills improve.
6) SLOW DOWN AND DO IT RIGHT
Much like trying to learn to play a part on a musical instrument, rushing through your shooting drills will leave you with a limited understanding of what you’re supposed to do. It’s not a race against the other guys and gals at the range, so slow down, then concentrate on details like your stance, trigger pull, and accuracy margins. This way, you can be sure you’re doing things right and committing your skills to memory.
7) TRY SOME DRY FIRE PRACTICE
Before you head to the range and use up a bunch of ammo, make sure your mechanics are sound with some dry fire practice. Like the name suggests, you’ll need to ensure your firearm is empty before you attempt any dry fire practice. You might even consider setting up a dummy target so you have somewhere to focus your aim. Since you
have no recoil or noise to contend with, the only thing you need worry about here are the basics — your stance, how you’re pulling the trigger, etc.
8) DO IT AGAIN
Practice, as they say, makes perfect. If you want to get better at shooting, you’ll need to do all of the above, and then do it again, and again, and again. As you continue shooting, you may not notice improvements straight away, but over time, the little things will start to add up, and your abilities will steadily increase.
9) SWITCH IT UP
As an addendum to the above advice, you’ll want to work on your drills repeatedly to get better, but you don’t want your training to get boring either, so be sure to cycle your exercises from time to time so that your shooting practice feels fresh. This way, you can help maintain a healthy interest and stay out of a rut. You can also vary things within your training sessions, breaking your time at the range into different segments where you practice different techniques.
10) KNOW WHEN TO QUIT
As Kenny Rogers once said, you’ve got to “know when to fold ‘em,” which, in this case, means you should realize when you’re getting diminishing returns on a session and pack it up for the day. As with any activity, there’s such a thing as overtraining when it comes to shooting, and doing so will only embed your errors. So if you’ve done all you can do for one session, call it a day, rest up, and return again another day with renewed vigor.
Tips for Beginners at the Range
1. Read the range’s rules online – before you arrive. Avoid surprises and know what’s allowed.
2. ALWAYS assume that all guns are loaded and remove your finger from the trigger as soon as you’re finished shooting. (AVOID ACCIDENTS)
3. Never point your gun at anything other than a target and downrange.
4. Always leave the safety catch on when you’re not shooting.
5. Show respect for the range officer. This is his domain.
6. Get familiar with range commands.
• Cease Fire – Everyone MUST STOP shooting immediately.
• Make Safe – Remove finger from trigger, apply safeties, and holster or set-down your firearm.
• Range Going Hot – Live fire is about to start. Stay tuned –“Commence Fire” should follow soon.
• Commence Fire – You’re allowed to disengage the safety and begin firing when you’re ready.
• Range is Cold – Live fire has ceased – and you can standby for instruction to check or change targets down range.
