FROM THE PUBLISHER September marks the end of Summer – officially September 22nd this year – and the unofficial end of the riding season for many. It usually marks the end of most Bike Nights and time to break out the leathers and chaps – for those that don’t wear them yearround…. In reality, though, it’s simply the changing of seasons – and the start of my favorite time of year to ride, especially here in the Midwest! The colorful leaves, crisp air, and cooler temperatures – make it easier to wear a little more gear and far more enjoyable to ride. And while many of the Bike Nights wind down – several of Ohio’s most popular and biggest riding events happen in the Fall, and in September in particular. Two of our favorites – the Easyrider Rodeo and Thunder on the Strip kick off the month, and there are hillclimbs, flat track, and motorcycle drags to follow. And of course, we have some of our biggest Bike Shows of the year! We also have plenty of rides as well – including Memorial and Patriots Day (9/11) remembrance rides. All plenty of reasons to jump on the bike and ride! As always, Thunder Roads Ohio features more rides, rallies, bike nights, bike shows, and other motorcycle events than any other publication – from our feature pages, sponsor ads, event flyers, and of course our event listings in the back of the mag. It’s all in Thunder Roads – and you wanna hear something really cool? There are EVEN MORE events listed online! You can find them by following us on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) or check out our online event listings at ThunderRoadsOhio. com. Powered by ReasonsToRide.com, our online listings are the most complete and informative motorcycle event listings to be found online. Speaking of events, I’d like to plug a new initiative that we are introducing this year. As we wind things down, we are going to start considering various charities, non-profits, and community riding organizations – and the folks that enable them to host rides and events all across Ohio. We are going recognize some of the ride organizers and volunteers that make it possible to pull off the events that so many take for granted. And as part of that recognition, we are going to award Prizes and Advertising Sponsorships for 2022! If there’s anyone that you’d like to recognize – as in the ride itself or the organizer that pulls it all together and makes it happen – we’d like to hear your thoughts.

As Told By

THE IRON COWBOY

NOW BOOKING FOR FALL, WINTER, AND 2022 EVENTS!

EVENT & ORGANIZER BEST OF OHIO This year we are starting our BEST OF OHIO AWARD discussion a little earlier than normal, partly because we are adding a new aspect to the program. This year, we would like to focus on the CHARITABLE EVENTS and the people that provide the drive behind them.

For more than 10 years, Iron Cowboy Productions and Thunder

Roads Ohio have been hosting “turn-key” on-site promotions – including Bike Shows, Live Music Events, Tattoo Contests, Charity Events, and other interactive events aimed at the motorcycle community and beyond. While 2020 and most of 2021 has been a challenge for many, it seems as though we are finally able to start planning out things further in advance. And as luck would have it – we have “parties” looking for a home. •

We are now booking IRON & INK TATTOO PARTIES, WINTER CABIN FEVER PARTIES, and CALENDAR / PHOTO SHOOT EVENTS for the upcoming Fall and Winter months. The CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES will soon begin announcing REGIONAL and INVITATIONAL BIKE SHOWS starting in the Spring of 2022. As such, we are looking to identify dealerships, rallies, and larger venues that are interested in hosting these bigger events so that we can plan appropriately and begin securing sponsorships for the shows.

If you’re interested in hosting a Thunder Roads event or adding a BIKE SHOW or TATTOO CONTEST / PARTY to your rally or existing event – please reach out ASAP, as we anticipate filling key dates and working out most of the 2022 TOUR SCHEDULE by January of 2022. For more information, email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

This year has been an especially challenging year for almost all of us – but it’s been especially hard on those that organize and pull off the countless charitable rides and benefits that far too many of us take for granted. In many cases, events that draw hundreds and even thousands are spear headed by and possibly even pulled off entirely due to the efforts of a small group of people. In many cases, you might even say that it falls on ONE key person that pulls everyone together and shepherd them through the event. And in many – if not most – of these cases, there is little to no compensation for many of the biggest rides and events that we all attend throughout the year. To that end, we would like to invite our readers to NOMINATE individuals and organizations that you feel we should recognize for their efforts this past year – and possibly beyond. Just send us an email with information on who you think we should recognize and why. If possible, please include specific examples of how you’ve dealt with them and efforts you’ve seen. We will select individuals and organizations from those nominated – to receive the TRO BEST OF OHIO AWARDS. These include not only recognition and some cool extra’s for them – but we will also be awarding OVER $10,000 in PROMOTIONAL SUPPORT and ADVERTISING for them in 2022. We want to get behind these folks and help ensure their success going forward. Email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com and include “EVENT ORGANIZER” in the subject line. Thank you!

Amazing vintage motorcycle exhibit comes to the Crawford Museum By Paris Wolfe, TRO Contributor A Century of the American Motorcycle brings 35 vintage and modern motorcycles to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in University Circle from August 19, 2021, to March 2022. The motorcycles represent some of the best from the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum in Birmingham, Alabama. Owned by George Barber, the six-story, 230,000-square-foot museum is home to the world's largest motorcycle collection and includes 1,600 operational bikes. John Lutsch, program and marketing manager at the Crawford, is excited about the exhibit. He calls the Barber Museum “the Louvre of motorcycles.” The visiting exhibit, focuses on the technical and aesthetic aspects of these powerful machines. It starts with the 1905 Indian Single and continues with American-made bikes such as the 1919 HD Model 19 J Twin and right up to the 2018 Motus MST. “These specific models were selected for the exhibit,” says Lutsch. “They represent the rarest and best of a manufacturer’s efforts.” He compares the significance of this exhibit to the 1998 The Art of the Motorcycle show in New York City’s Guggenheim Museum. The first of its kind, that show brought together 114 iconic bikes from the late 1800s to modern times, chronicling the most compelling moments in the evolution of motorcycle technology and design. “Nothing this comprehensive has been done in Greater Cleveland,” he says. “The way they’re going to be presented and the events we’re planning will engage people. We’re giving people reasons to visit more than once.” The exhibit opens with a VIP, invitation-only event on August 19 and continues with a public opening that same evening. On September 11-12, BMW Motorrad will bring its 25-city Heritage Tour to the museum. Registrants will have an opportunity to test drive some of the company’s newest bikes. A second motorcycle exhibit will follow in spring 2022. Crawford Auto Museum - Cleveland History Center 10825 East Blvd., Cleveland OH www.wrhs.org

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Not for Sale…. Last winter I decided that the new Deluxe I has purchased at the end of 2019 was just not cutting it for me. I had owned and ridden a Fatboy for 14 years, tried a Freewheeler for about 7 months after that, and then traded it in for the Deluxe. I took her to Arkansas in the Fall, and it just didn’t feel right, so I said, “I think my season is just over for riding, I can ride twoup with Hubby, so I am going to sell her.” Of course, Hubby raised his brow and said, “Are you sure??” “Yep.” I stated with confidence….” positive.” So the advertisement went out…. there was only one inquiry, and she thought the pipes would be too loud. What? Who doesn’t like the sound of long shots in the wind?? So, I continued to wait.

God has given you, where He has placed you and where He is leading you. And especially, don’t let go of the good to be part of the whole…a mighty Oak may be found standing alone, but the longer it stands, the stronger it gets. Reach out, don’t sell out, your season has just begun. Catch you in the curves! Mary G.

In the Spring, we had a Roads Rally in southern Ohio. Nice curves, so I decided to ride my Deluxe and determined that if I couldn’t become one with her on this trip, she was remaining on the For Sale list! So off we went…. Down the winding roads we rode, twisting and turning as we became one in the wind. That trip changed my thinking…I wasn’t finished riding! My season had not ended, it had just begun! She even earned a new name… Sparkle, because of the way she sparkles in the sun. Today she sits in the carport, protected and safe until we get together again and the ad that had her ready to go, was taken down right away…Not for Sale…no, not today! Sometimes we get hasty about things we do. We jump into the moment, often regretting it too. I’ve heard it said, ‘Everything has its price’, that isn’t always such sound advice. We look at what’s in front of us, but don’t always see all and that’s usually a good sign that we are about to fall. We sell ourselves short when we don’t think things through. It creates an advantage for those not so true. There’s only One you can truly sell out to and have the confidence that He’s never going to let you down and that is Jesus Christ. Anything other than that will lead you out of your proper place, or compromise who you are. It may look right in the moment, but if you give it a little time, you will be able to see clearly, and it won’t cost you a dime. Keep holding fast to what

TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES The Bike Show Series

SEPTEM

BER UPD

ATE!

It’s the tail end of the Summer Bike Show season, but it brings up some of our biggest and best bike shows – including the GENEVA THUNDER ZONE BIKE SHOW! This is our longest running show and always the biggest of the Summer Season!

INVITATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOWS

Follow us on facebook (www.facebook.com/ThunderRoadsOhio) for announcements and updates on the upcoming INVITATIONAL SHOWS. All winners from the 2021 Summer Series are eligible to participate in these CASH winning shows. Traditionally, the OHIO BIKE WEEK SHOW and PISTON POWER SHOWS were the series invitational, championship shows. Unfortunately, both of these shows have been impacted by the pandemic.

The Bike Show Series

Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, MSTA Editor / ReasonsToRide.com Contributor

“Should I buy heated grips or heated

MSTA Red River Gorge Rally, Mt. Sterling, KY, July 8-11 Since the rally is relatively close by, I rode my 650 Suzuki V-Strom XT. It's lighter than the FJR and is fitted with Michelin Anakee adventure tires so I can ride it on the kind of gravel roads found on easy adventure rides.

The MSTA Red River Gorge (RRG) Rally is one of my favorites because there are great roads in central Kentucky and it's only about 150 miles from home. I left on Thursday morning, taking some of my favorite roads in southern Ohio including OH 763 to Aberdeen and crossing the big bridge to Kentucky. Since there are often thunderstorms this time of year, I always create several alternative routes to the rally. This time it was nice and sunny, so I took the longer 200 mile version, looping East in Kentucky on SR 344 and 377 through Daniel Boone National Forest before heading West on some four digit roads and down SR 11 to rally headquarters at the Mt. Sterling Ramada Inn.

Meals were at the Cattlemen's Roadhouse, which is only two doors away from the hotel. They have a fantastic salad bar, steaks, burgers, seafood and drinks. After dinner we hung out each evening on the patio behind the hotel where there were chairs, tables with umbrellas, beverages and good conversation.

Scattered afternoon thunderstorms were forecast for the whole weekend, but we were not intimidated. Friday morning, the weather started out nice and my friend Emanuel Papp rode down from Dayton, OH, on his V-Strom to join us for the day's ride at 8:30AM. We also had Jeff Dolence from Dayton on his FJR and Ray Karcher from the Covington, Kentucky area on his 1990s Honda Nighthawk. Our route was one of event coordinator Pat Mogavero's favorites, which he calls Rock and Roll. It started out North and East of Mt. Sterling into Daniel Boone National Forest, through Salt Lick and around Cave Run Lake, then winds its way south through Wellington, Frenchburg and Nada Tunnel. The tunnel is one of the highlights of the route- very dark and the walls are always wet, so headlights don't help much. It's a single lane, so traffic has to alternate one direction, then the other. Lunch was at one of the rally favorites, Miguel's Pizza, near 24

Slade, KY. After lunch we rode through Ravenna, past the big Army depot East of Richmond. On SR 89 North of Irvine, we encountered a thunderstorm, so we stopped and zipped up the vents on our Klim jackets. The rain quit by the time we got back to Mt. Sterling and we had an evening of good food, drink and conversation. Good friend Jeremy Riffle, of Vehicle Enhancements Inc, Moraine, OH, arrived about 9PM on his KTM 790 Rally Adventure bike. He and Emanuel were ready for an adventure route on Saturday, and the RRG rally had several to choose from this year thanks to our friend Drew Faulkner, who developed them for his popular Red River Scramble Rally, held at Lago Linda Hideaway near Beattyville, KY, September 16-19. Saturday morning weather was expected to be good until noon with afternoon scattered thunderstorms. We wanted to ride the Novice ADV route, but not in the rain, so we left at around 8 AM, riding the 20 mile pavement route to the start of the ADV loop. This is a great route, and just about as challenging as I would want on the V-Strom. One of my favorite sections was White Ash Road near Beattyville where the road goes through a small tunnel under the CSX railroad line, which runs along the Kentucky river. There was very little water and mud on the route, but plenty of gravel through beautiful back country, and we were able to do about 90 miles of the 100 mile loop before light rain began.

If you want to try some Adventure riding, don't forget to check out Drew Faulkner's Red River Scramble: The Bluegrass Adventure Rally Red River Scramble is a free grassroots adventure motorcycle rally; Eastern Kentucky is Drew's favorite place to ride, and he likes to share that experience with other motorcyclists. This year the event will begin on Thursday, September 16th, through Sunday the 19th, at the Lago Linda Hideaway near Beattyville, Kentucky. https:// redriverscramble.com/ Nestled in the Appalachian foothills of eastern Kentucky, Red River Gorge is a canyon system littered with sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, and natural arches. The paved roads in and around the gorge are some of the best in the Bluegrass State, meanwhile, the off-road riding offers adventure seekers challenges over all types of terrain, with intimate access to some of the area’s unique scenery.

When we got to the end of the loop it was just a little after noon, and no one wanted to go back to the hotel that early. Fortunately, I had loaded my favorite road route from the rally in my GPS. It so happened that the end of the ADV loop was right on the Hillbilly Triangle route about two thirds of the way through. We were out of the rain, so we decided to ride it backwards to the hotel, which would take most of the afternoon. The weather held until we were about twenty miles from the end of our route. There were big black clouds ahead, so we made a strategic stop. I had started the day with the rainproof cover on the tank bag, eyeglasses put away and wearing old expendable gloves, so I was ready for rain. The day before, Emanuel and I had perfected our "tag team" rain drill- stop, jump off our bikes, I zip up Emanuel's jacket vents, he zips up mine, and we're good to go. . It rained hard for about fifteen minutes then quit, so we just stoped and unziped each other's vents. Easy and kind of fun We made it back to the hotel about 4:30 PM with just over 270 miles for the day. After dinner, the rain moved in for good, and we just spent the evening partying. Sunday morning it was still raining off and on, so I just slabbed it home on I75 in a little over two hours. Another fun weekend!

Kids Feel Safer on an Electric Dirt Bike Interestingly we have found that even if we have an electric dirt bike that has a higher seat height than a gas-powered dirt bike our kids have felt more comfortable learning on an electric dirt bike. Once they got the hang of the electric dirt bike switching to a gas-powered dirt bike was a breeze. We have even had some of our kids that really didn’t show any interest in dirt biking at all….all of the sudden start riding the electric dirt bike and then decided that they really enjoyed it. Our job as dirt bike parents is to make sure our kids have FUN. The Stacyc is the PERFECT beginner dirt bike that even after your kids have acquired the dirt bike skills needed to ride a gas powered dirt bike they will continue to rip around on.

VENDOR / EXHIBIT SPACE The new location offers even more opportunities for vendors and riding organizations to setup. After the success of 2019, the venue is offering even more expanded opportunities for those wishing to display during the Rally. The Marketplace Landing is traditionally used as a craft and outdoor vendor area all summer long – with easy electrical hookups and well-maintained pathways throughout. There are even options for indoor stalls that we can use for covered vendor spots! Historically, this area was home to an amusement park at the turn of the century and the covered areas were where they had indoor rides. A limited number of specially discounted spaces are available for artisan and craft vendors and displays. Riding Organizations and those hosting Rides, Rallies, or other events are invited to set up and share their information with those attending the rally. Special discounted rates are available for those setting up informational and non-retail displays. Additionally, charitable riding organization – including veterans and motorcycle ministries – are invited to come out and help us host the zone in exchange for opportunities to set up or host special hospitality areas for their riders and guests. In particular, we are looking for folks to help us park and direct bikes – especially on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, please email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com or call 440-273-8072. 32

SHINE 'N IRON

M nshiners and Motorcycles MOONSHINING BASICS

Is it LEGAL in Ohio?

And is it legal in Ohio?

It is illegal to produce Moonshine without the proper license in Ohio

Since we’ve started this feature, we’ve had a lot of people asking the same two basic questions - #1 What is Moonshining, and what’s involved? How does it work? #2 – Is it legal? What is Moonshining? Distillation is basically a process used to separate a mixture into base elements. Whether you are distilling water, vinegar, fuel, perfume, or alcohol, you are separating the vapors to collect only the part you want. A Distillation Unit, which can be called a moonshine still even if you're not making moonshine, works by boiling a liquid. This separates the "pieces" oh the liquid into different parts. You collect only the pieces you want and discard the rest. You can precisely decide which pieces you collect because each compound boils at a different temperature. There are two main different types of distilling methods depending on what you want for your final product. Pot distilling is what you use when you want to keep a lot of the flavors that you got from fermenting. Pot distilling is for making moonshine, whisky, rum, brandy, and fruit schnapps. Reflux distilling is what you use when you want something with a really high proof but as flavorless and odorless as possible. Vodka and fuel alcohol are made by using reflux distillation.

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

If you’re planning to make moonshine you will need to get a license from the state of Ohio. A change in Ohio law in 2011 eased regulations regarding micro-distilleries in the state, and since then numerous small-batch producers have opened shop. Under Ohio law, the illegal manufacture of moonshine is a firstdegree misdemeanor, unless certain toxins are found in the product. If poisons are detected, it could raise the penalty to a fourth-degree felony. Under Ohio law, it. It is legal for individuals to produce wines, beer and hard cider, which have a substantially lower alcohol content. While individuals of legal drinking age may produce wine or beer at home for personal or family use, Federal law strictly prohibits individuals from producing distilled spirits at home (see 26 United States Code (U.S.C.) 5042(a)(2) and 5053(e)). Producing distilled spirits at any place other than a TTB-qualified distilled spirits plant can expose you to Federal charges for serious offenses and lead to consequences. PLEASE NOTE: Our column is meant to entertain and NOT provide LEGAL ADVICE. Please consult others – for current and more detailed explanations of the legality and intricacies of moonshining. If your Heart Ain’t In It I haven’t written in a few months. I suffered two “Widow Maker” heart attacks on June 14th, 2021. That’s a reality check at 51 years old. I now have a couple of new stents in there, and an enlightened outlook on life. Laying in the hospital waiting to die at any minute really brings some things into perspective that’s for sure. It doesn’t get any more Real than that. There are so many things that go through your mind when something like that happens. The Club Life is one of them when you are as imbedded as I am. I’ve been Runnin and Gunnin hard for many years. I didn’t realize the toll it was taking on me. It happens so gradual you don’t even notice until it feels like you got shot in the chest with a 12 gauge. It turns out when they told us when we were young that we’d pay for it someday, they weren’t lying. I’ve had to really step back and take a look at what I’m doing to myself with the long hours, the stress of Leadership,

the miles and time invested. I know no moderation. It’s 100% or nothing. But now I get it. I’m actually human. I’m actually mortal. You know they say there are old bikers, and stupid bikers, but few old stupid bikers. Fortunately for me my Cardiologist said I have no permanent damage. If I take these 6 pills a day for maybe a year, quit acting like I’m 30, and focus on my health I can get through this ok. That doesn’t mean I can’t live the lifestyle I have chosen; it means learn moderation. Learn exception, not the rule.

much to learn, just as you may also. Take care of yourself! Give all you can, but if your heart ain’t in it, hang it up. My heart is not what it used to be, but it’s 100% Real.

I just spent the weekend with members of my club that have 2 months to 50 years in our patch. I’m thankful I got the opportunity, and it wasn’t at my funeral. Imagine that. 50 years. Incredible. My plan is to stick to it. I don’t really know any other life. But I plan to do it smarter. I will never make 50 years in this patch. It’s almost statistically impossible. But I have much to give, much to teach, and

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

A Southern biker was visiting a Yankee relative in Boston over the holidays. He went to a large party and met a pretty co-ed. He was attempting to start up a conversation with the line, "Where does you go to school?" The coed, of course, was not overly impressed with his grammar or southern drawl, but did answer his question. "Yale," she replied. The biker took a big, deep breath and shouted, "WHERE DOES YOU GO TO SCHOOL?" A backwoods, mountain-bred, engineering student was walking on campus one day when another mountain-reared, engineering student rode up on a shiny new motorcycle. "Where did you get such a rockin' bike?" asked the first. The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, 'Take what you want'". The second engineer nodded approvingly. "Good choice, the clothes probably wouldn't have fit".

A tough looking group of Bikers were out riding when they saw a girl about to jump off a bridge so they stopped. The leader, a big burly man gets off his bike and says "what are you doing?" "I'm going to commit suicide" she said While he did not want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an opportunity so he asked..."well before you jump, why don't you give me a kiss?" So she does....And it was a long deep lingering kiss. After she's finished, the biker says, " Wow! That was the best kiss I have ever had. That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why are you committing suicide?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl"

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAG! TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@ gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?! Scavenger Hunt Winner: Harleywood Lynch
